I've heard that Mariah Carey has whistle register....now when people usually talk about range and how far someone can sing in their range they ususally talk about their chest voice...well anyway people say that Mariah Carey has a seven octave range(because of the whistle register). I've heard that whistle register comes from the head voice...well would you consider that range since it's coming from her head voice?

She doesn't have seven octaves, I can tell you that.

that's what i read in the rolling stone
The seven octaves thing is sort of a Mariah Carrey urban legend. She does have a very wide range though.

head voice is true voice. Falsetto isnt..but its generally accepted to be part of your range. I say if you can make it....its part of your range. Whistle comes from clamping the cords shut and pushing air through them. They dont vibrate in a wave...just cut the air like a lip whistle. There is another link thread around here somewhere but adam lopez holds the record for highest male note and has as much whistle as mariah does, and plans on topping her. I think she holds the record for highest note period, or maybe highest on a recording. I dont know. But Adam's stuff is crazy. He can sound exactly like a violin and then just rise it up until it sounds like electric feedback. I think his record note is a D7. I've actually hit a C7 before...didnt know it was close to the record back then, and it sounded crappy anyways....but it kinda gave me a little inspiration, considering this man is a baritone as well as says he's done higher.

and no...Mariah doesnt have 7. People say that alot when they reach into the "seventh octave" on the musical staff. I think this Lopez guy would be closer because he's a baritone which helps him get some lower notes.

Doesn't everyone have whistle register, and it's just a matter of technique?

Yea I can get into whistle if I warm up enough and or if its just a good day. I posted some samples in my voicehelp hotline....At least I think its in that same link...But its in that "whats your range" thread from a few weeks back.
And yea... whistle is kinda a trick...I think everyone could develop it to some degree regardless of your normal voice range, obvious. Kinda like blaring your nostrils. Heh
Edit: Just checked and it was more like a few months back....But I didnt put the link in that thread anyways....I dont know where i posted it at...
Does anyone know my whistle link? Dag...I had to setup another account because i forgot the password to the first one. Thats why I have two seperate sample links. Oh well, Anyways..

It's possible she can hit notes that span 7 octaves...but i doubt she can hit each note within that range.

Well she can hit all of the notes within her range no doubt. But she would also have to cover the bass notes to be able to hit 7 octaves and I just dont see that coming from a soprano female. I've never heard her go that low but who knows. Minnie Ripperton is considered more talented in the whistle register than mariah. Too bad she's passed away.

Well what i mean is that it would seem there is a gap between her real voice and her whistle. kind of like when the average person would try to blend from regular voice into falsetto. Like a sort of jump where it doesnt flow from regular to whistle.
I have no vocal training, thats just what i was thinking. Hope I don't sound like a moron haha.

yea I know what you mean. I'm pretty sure she can connect them all together but I'm not certain. I know Minnie could actually enunciate words with hers. Crazy.
