Prepared Piano?

What is a prepared piano, i was looking at a cd of John Cage's works and noticed that most of the music on the cd was for "prepared" piano, what is it?

You place random stuff on the strings to make it sound different and what not. Things like pencils and such. At least that's what they taught us in elementry school.

A correspondent of mine attempted prepared piano for one of his composition recitals and was forbidden.
