My band has recently recorded a CD with our producer. The guys has recently moved from Cubase SX 3 to ProLogic on a mac (or somethin like that)

anyway, he gave me his Cubase program, however he had to burn it off his PC as he did the download version or something..

anyway what im getting at is i have installed it and everything. But when opening it i get this error message:

Application ' Cubase SX 3.0' has caused the following error:

-> No protection device connected.

Options:
- For troubleshooting information click <Help>.
- Connect a valid protection device and click <Retry>.
- Click <Cancel> to abort.

clicking Retry does nothing, and clicking cancel causes the program to close. Is this protection device some sort of hardware? as the guy only gave me the software

thanks for any help

Yup, the protection device is a piece of hardware, a usb dongle that has to be connected to computer in order to use Cubase. A somewhat effective system to prevent piracy.

Steinberg created the system with a USB dongle to prevent exactly the behavior you're describing of how you obtained the software in the first place.

"Steinberg created the system with a USB dongle to prevent exactly the behavior you're describing of how you obtained the software in the first place."

obviously you dont read well.. i said the guy BOUGHT the program online, and you can either choose to download it from their official website or have them send you the CD. He chose to download it, but does no longer use it. which is why he gave it to me.

He never told me it needed any hardware. im guessing he didnt give me that as he still needs it?

is it possible to get hold of or buy this hardware anywhere on its own?

No, actually I did. When you download the software, it's cheaper. That's because the dongle encryption is built-in to the software and is unique to one computer.

They did this to prevent people from downloading it, and then sending digital copies to everyone on the Internet.
