My drummer's drumset is small, a snare, three toms, a hi-hat, a cymbal and a bass drum. But we can't afford to buy anymore mics, we have quite a few sucky mics, but only one SM58 I use for vocals.

Is there a way to position the mic so that it records everything at once?

our band has 4 vocal mics we place them this way.

the quality is quite good

1. snare/hi hat
2. bass drum
3. ride/tom
4. cymbal/tom

Low quality mics or high quality ones?

give frequency range on your low quality mics.

My band uses two SM58's for overheads on drums and one kick drum mic (the name escapes me right now), which is also used for the bass amp. We record our drums and bass at the same time because we are limited by an 8-track machine. I put the kick mic away from the kick drum so it can pick up on the bass amp and the kick drum at the same time. I'm sure you could do the same type setup with your low-end mics and still get a good sound for cheap.

EDIT:

This is the setup we use because our drummer plays extremely loud and we have to turn our amps up pretty much all the way to hear our instruments over his bashing. He's really good though, so it's ok. If your drummer plays loud, then this setup should be fine.

I'd use two of the mics as XY overheads, one on the snare, and one on the kick. That's all you really need. The quality isn't going to be awesome, but it will sound ok.
