Play covers for the first few sessions, to see what level you are all at, then move onto originals. Talk about wereabouts you want the band to go. Also talk about everybodies influences. Make sure all your influences do not conflict,as that may mean trouble down the track.

Make sure you are all equally dedicated, and that you all have the same influences.
I just the other day learned how important that is.

Well, I totally disagree with a couple of you about having the same influences. If you all have different influences, your music is going to have a much broader range of sound than if you all like, say, pop-punk or something.

Most people agree to do a couple covers, but my band started as just a jam, so we just came up with a couple things and weren't serious, then we became serious. We have 3 songs now, and we just finished learning our first cover, the black dahlia murder's "thy horror cosmic" It only took us 2 practices to get it down, so I think if you come up with a couple originals a cover will be much easier because you'll be used to playing in a band.

Well you can have different influences, but the problem comes if, say, the drummer and singer want to make hardcore music and the guitarist and bassist want to make ska.

Oh I see where you're coming from now. In my band everyone likes pretty much all types of music. Just hope yours turns out that way, irishbasketcase.

Don't need the same influences, but make sure your influences are compatible and you are willing to incoperate everyones style into the music you make. If the guitarist wants to play death metal and the drummer wants smooth jazz, it probably won't work out too much. But a jazz drummer working with a Cuban guitarist and a funky bassist could be amazingly cool.

Hmm...they could create a new genre. DEATH JAZZ.

I say screw covers. My old band did tool covers at my tryout. I thought it was cool. Then we would jam tool covers sometimes....then all the original songs started sounding like tool songs. Cool for like three times...after that...well...I'm not in that band anymore.

That's because you only did tool covers, had you done some other bands, you would've had more influences on writing, and had a different sound. To each his own

Man, If you do a search on my nickname I'm sure u'd find my tutorial about rehearsal spaces. Also 4 hours seems optimal usually. 30 min to tune up/set up/n ****. 2:30 to write new, 1:00 to repeat old stuff and the practice recap.

At our first few practices, they were like 4-5 hours because we'd tune and unpack for 30, dick around for an hour, then we'd be more serious for like an hour, dick around for another half, be serious for a half, then just kinda talk n not even really play that much, then pack for a half hour

Now they're like 6 hours on average, because we unpack for 30, play all our songs twice through, takes like 40 minutes, then we usually work on the newer song for like an hour, practicing it and improving it, then we take a break, get food for about 30 minutes, then go listen to music for inspiration for another 30, then go out, play all our songs again, then usually work on some new stuff, writing or our cover. Then we play once mroe through, sometimes a song twice if we did bad. Like a half hour to pack up.

Just make sure your band members dont hate you. Or vice versa.
