I was going to a classical education thread again this week but I couldn't find my Wagner collection, who the topic was going to be about. I decided to substitute with Nevermore's new album, This Godless Endeavor. This album sets the standard for all metal in the future. Five stars from any metal magazine that you read and that's not enough. This album is catchy, brutal, powerful, touching, passionate, virtuosic, brilliant and overall one of the best albums I've bought in a long time.

Nevermore is going to take the metal world by storm, hopefully with this album and at Gigantour. I encourage all to buy, download or whatever just to hear this album. It takes influences from death, thrash, power, melo-death, prog-metal and anything you can really think of and blends them into a sonic gold mine for any fan of metal. They appear on Gigantour, a tour that most of you know about that picks bands to play mostly for their technical and musical skill. I can't wait to see them especially since I got free tickets.

Some things on this album are just insane to beable to pull off live, and the highlights are just too many to name. This thread is basically an attempt to create a Nevermore discussion thread and to boost their popularity on the forums. I'm sorry if you were awaiting another Classical Education thread but one will be coming in the next few days.

Aaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhh! I was going to do a writeup on these guys but you beat me to it!

Well, as long as we're on the subject, why don't you all head over to my This Godless Endeavor review (http://www.musicianforums.com/sputnik/album.php?reviewid=3140&genreid=4) and post up? :D

These guys are an excellent band. I love the new album and Dreaming Neon Black. It's always great to see that Europeans aren't the only ones who know metal.

Yeah, it doesn't time out ever and doesn't take forever like megaupload.

I enjoyed that review on Sputnik. Accurate besides only the 4 1/2 stars, because it's a five star album in my opinion :thumb: .

From previous threads, the favorite seems to be Dreaming Neon Black. I don't own the album yet, but from what I've heard, it's great.

Dreaming Neon Black is excellent. Right up on par with TGE. It's tought to say which is better.

One of my favorite metal bands. I keep meaning to pick this record up, but the urge to save my cash keeps getting in the way. I'll probably buy it in a bit though, as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Moses
08-10-2005, 01:15 AM
I think the TGE will really take them places. I think this band has the future of metal in the palm of their hands along with:

Mastodon
Avenged Sevenfold
Nightwish
Dragonforce
Trivium
Arch Enemy
Extol

I like Nevermore and 1 or 2 of the bands listed above, but I sure hope that those aren't the future of metal. :-\

Moses
08-10-2005, 01:35 AM
Born is really catchy but still maintains everything technically and was the first song that caught my attention.
My Acid Words has a cool main riff and harmonised guitarwork.
Sentient 6 is somewhat of a ballad at first and then becomes a bit heavier.
Medicated Nation is pretty cool too and has a pretty cool chorus.
Sell My Soul for Stones is another ballad a bit like Sentient 6 and has some really cool spanish-like guitar work.
The Psalm of Lydia is just plain rockin' and has another cool spanish-like solo.

I think I'll have a listen to My Acid Words, thanks :thumb:

Moses I think I love you.

I'v been trying to get some stuff off This Godless Endeavor apart from the sample songs for ages. This helps alot.

I can't belive Jeff Loomis doesn't get more credit for his playing,IMO he's one of the best new guitarists in metal.

Yep, this album is awesome. I just bought it last week and I love it. I was surprised with the songs Steve Smyth wrote; they're some of my favorites on the album like "A Future Uncertain" and "Sell My Heart For Stones." He's also a **** good guitarist.

These guys really deserve more attention. Hopefully this album will help.

It's a great album, The Politics of Ecstasy is still my personal favorite...

The weird timing on the drums is good, but it also bothers me on maybe one or two of the songs, other than that this cd will be in my player for the next three years (when the next Nevermore cd comes out).

I missed Behemoth and Symphony X.

Can you describe Extol please. I am fairly sure i am seeing them when they support opeth in september, and haven't heard of them.

Well they have the dual vocalist thing going, where one screams and one sings and I'm particularly impress with the singer. I believe they are a Chritian band but not limited to those principles. I'll have some uploads up in a second. They add elements of all kinds of metal to their music like tech-death, melo-death, powermetal, and many more things.

Ahh, I was hoping to do an FA on Nevermore. Oh well.

This album rules. I just hope it gives them their big break, despite its lack of immediately catchy material. I can't wait to see them on the Gigantour in September.

Moses

It's not really an FA but just letting people know about the new album. You can post your information and uploads in here if you'd like.

hxxp://s11.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0OSBTOQKA2RRY2OYEL5F9HIGSU

1)My Acid Words
2)Sentient 6 <<<Listen to this if you like The Learning off Politics of
Ecstasy.I think this is the second part to that song.
3)Sell My Heart for Stones

I won't upload the title track cos that'd be giving away an album right there.

I can't pick a track for my favorite yet. They're all so good.

I've heard this band classified as Power/Death metal but I think they're just plain old metal. What does everyone else think their genre could be?

08-12-2005, 03:05 AM
Well, Moses, as much as I usually like your stuff...I'm going to have to give this one a thumbs down. Not my style of music. I've listened to one song, mind you. There are some cool aspects to it, but nothing that sticks out enough to me in order to branch into something I normally wouldn't listen to. :-\

Moses

Try My Acid Words.

Kage

Actually you're right. I'm listening to it in awe. I still can't believe that this band isn't as big as say, Shadows Fall or Dream Theater. They certianly are just as if not more talented.

The Bittersweet intro kind of reminds me of Lateralus.

nevermore was awesome at gigantour. I was bummed that they didn't play "fault of the flesh" and I missed "enemies of reality" because I ran off to see symphony X on 2nd stage, but these guys wiped out the entire 1st stage combined.

Why do you think this album pales so much compared to past albums? What did they have back then that they don't have now?

Moses
08-14-2005, 11:54 PM
Well he didn't say anything bad about it yet either. It's just that with the release of a new album for any band there will be naysayers. Actually Kage did say he didn't like Born.... Anyway the fact that there is no bashing of this new album shows the greatness it posesses.

Shadows
08-14-2005, 11:58 PM
Iai said in my review of TGE that he thought the album was a colossal disappointment.

Iai
08-14-2005, 11:59 PM
Why do you think this album pales so much compared to past albums? What did they have back then that they don't have now?

Energy, and a sense of progression. This Godless Endeavour, just like Enemies Of Reality, sounds like they've hit a brick wall and have no idea where to go next. They've done everything on this record before, and done it better. There's nothing as melodic as The Heart Collector or Deconstruction, as catchy as Believe In Nothing, as furious as The River Dragon Has Come or Beyond Within, as atmospheric as Deconstruction or Dead Heart In A Dead World, as technical as pretty much anything from The Politics Of Ecstacy.....

If another band has released it, I'd say it was promising but it needed work. But Jesus, this is Nevermore. They're responsible for two of the best metal albums of all time.

It's a step in the right direction after Enemies, but I'm not convinced that they can recapture the magic they had.

Shadows
08-15-2005, 12:04 AM
That's weird..I have Dreaming Neon Black as well, and I love it. But I feel this album has a slight edge over it. It's heavy and fast, but still with plenty of emotion and energy. I thought is was fairly technical too.

I guess it all comes down to opinion.

I think if they want to go anywhere on the next album they have to change thier sound drastically. Don't get my wrong, I believe this is album of the year, but it's not exactly a whole new revolution for the band. The solo's are a little less wanky though.

I really want to see them at Gigantour but the only person I know that could go with me has overprotective parents and want an adult to be there with us (But neither of his parents will do it).

Nevermore did it again! They realeased another diamond! This Godless Endeavor is an album that has some similarities with their older recordings and that makes it really worthy. It doesnt have many cutchy songs except "Born" or "Psalm of Lydia" so it isnt an easy album for the non-Nevermore fun.
For the people who are Nevermore starters I suggest to first buy Dreaming Neon Black or Dead Heart In A Dead World and then the new album.
Finally what was everyones opinion about the songs Steve Smyth composed for the record? He is a solid player but I really didint like the fact that Jeff (Loomis) decided to let Steve compose because he wasnt in the past Nevermore recordings. So what do you think?

That's what I mean when I said "some of their better songs". :p I just think that "Dreaming Neon Black" is a much better album, but yet I never hear about it unless I'm reading a review for the album itself. It's probably because of "The River Dragon..." and "The Heart Collector" and them that the album receives the praise it does, but I'm just saying that, as a whole, it's not their strongest album.

Let's just say that right after they were done playing I ran up to the merch table and bought TGE. They were amazing. Plus, my seat was situated perfectly on Loomis's side of the staage so we got to watch so many great solos.

I think it was a great idea the let Steve to compose. Bittersweet Feast isn't one of my favorites, but Sell My Heart For Stones is one of their best ballads and it's written really well. A Future Uncertain is also one of my favorites on the album. They are all written really well and I'm happy that they included the songs that he wrote on the album. Smyth really fits in well with them. I bet people who didn't even know Steve wrote those songs had no clue they weren't written by Jeff.

Schecters are reasonably priced. Very versatile without compromising on anything. The awesome 7 strings would be in the 900-1000 USD range, I'd think. You can get them from around 700 USD as well.

ps: Figures arent exactly accurate. My mental conversion skills are a little rusty. But they shouldnt be more than 50 dollars off.

I don't really like Final Product. The chorus is pretty bad, I think. When did the band say they didn't like it though?

It was at a live show - sometime on Gigantour I think. Warrel said something like "we're sick of playing this song, but you guys want to hear it, so we'll play it anyway". I don't think they hate the song, they're just tired of playing it constantly.

Whats everyones thoughts on Enemies of Reality?

I love it.

It's easily my least favorite of the albums I own (DNB, DHIADW, EOR, TGE). There are some gems though, particularly the title track and Never Purify (I just realized how awesome it was when they played it live). The ballads are pretty good too. It was my first Nevermore album. I, Voyager was the track that got me into the band but it just seems kind of bland now.

my top 3 varies from time to time, but currently, I'd say:

1) Psalm Of Lydia
2) The Fault Of The Flesh
3) The River Dragon Has Come

I have heard the self-titled album, and I think it would sound a billion times better if it was re-recorded or something. It has some great songs such as "C.B.F." and "Garden Of Gray," and wicked riffs from "Godmoney"

I'll never forget the day I discovered Nevermore, from that day they have been a pretty constant band on rotation. Enemies of Reality has much better riffs than TGE. However, TGE has better songs :thumb:Psalm of Lydia is a great track, along with Bittersweet Feast
Hell, it's all good.

I think Nevermore's riffs have gone downhill since DNB. Their songs are more developed now, but they haven't written a riff to compare to I Am the Dog since.

I don't know about that, I disagree! lol I prefer listening to the entirety of Psalm of lydia than I am the dog. The dog has some nice palm muting and lead melodies, but psalm has more intense riffage, especially the intro and the chorus is beautiful.

A future uncertain has a sickening interlude riff that is equally as brutal as a fault of the flesh.

I think the cd DNB as a whole is better than tge, but some tge songs are way past dnb's riffs.

Nice to know I wasn't the only one who thought that song ****ing rules.

So, is this turning into the official Nevermore thread, or something?

I saw Nevermore live last monday....holy crap. That was seriously one of the best shows I've ever been to, and I've seen alot of really awesome shows. It was everything I expected them to be and more....****ing crazy show.

To be fair, if you trust what they say on stage, they seem to be rather tired of the entire "Dead Heart..." album, as well.

Luckily I caught Nevermore with Opeth. Nevermore got a surprisingly long set for an opening act...about forty-five minutes I'd say. Quality playing, quality sound, awesomeness.

Compared to Opeth their visual style looked sort of silly, like they were going for that Dave Mustaine "tough metalhead" vibe, but other than that they were truly great.

no, i missed DEP too. i got there fairly early, so once the crappy opening bands were done my friend and i pushed our way to the front pretty easily. there was no way we were gonna give up our spots at the rail between symphony x and nevermore to go see any of the early main stage bands.

and dream theater was amazing, but i was up in the balcony area (we got to the main stage just as the bell for the glass prison started). it's just not the same as being right next to nevermore.

EDIT: yah i was pissed that opeth and nevermore didn't come to milwaukee. there was no way i could've gotten down to chicago after school that day.

Where do you live? I live in an urban area in Milwaukee.

Symphony X was incredible. I had already listened to them before but that's when I really started to get into them. After the performance I paid twenty bucks to get a signed cd and meet the band. Nice guys.

They "almost forgot it" at my show, like the band walked off stage and decided to come back on at the last minute.

And DEP didn't even play...I mean, I got there a bit late, but from what other people told us the only band we missed was Bobaflex.

i'm like ten minutes west of waukesha.

and symphony x was incredible too. the only thing i regret about the symphony x/nevermore part of the night was that i was on the right side of the stage. both romeo AND loomis were on the left.

was it just me or was megadeth kind of a disappointment after the rest of the night? nevermore connected with the crowd so much better, and dream theater blew their musicianship away. and the constant strobes were real irritating...

Moses
11-24-2005, 06:09 PM
Yeah, I think you're right about Megadeth. Although it started to pick up around Hanger 18 though. Also the fact that we weren't allowed to mosh really pissed me off. That's the first time I've been to the Rave and not been able to mosh.
