My band is going to start jamming with a keyboard player soon. The problem is he mostly plays piano so he doesnt have a keyboard amp. This leaves are only solution being keyboard strait to PA.

My question is:

Will I need a direct box or will just lining out to the PA be ok?

I don't see a problem with that.

A DI Box would be a good idea.
Because it balances your signal (will improve signal to noise ratio and will dramatically reduce the risk of hum), and converts it to a suitable impedence to then be handled by the imput of a Mixer.

Besides balancing the signal, does it also boost it?

I really don't know much about DI boxes.

How long is the cable run from the keyboard to the PA mixer?

in my band the keyboardist plugs right into our p.a. and it sounds fine

It doesn't really boost it, although it may in some cases.
It does however ensure that the signal is at a line level.
