It helps to have a very strict teacher.

It's so much harder for one to discipline oneself than it is for someone that is unaware of the inflict-ee's pain, be it emotional/physical or whatever else.

You absolutely NEED a teacher if you want to become disciplined with piano. They will point out EVERY mistake you make (it's their job, lol) and you will become a MUCH better pianist because of it.

On your own... you could try playing along to music (I do this with some FF songs), if you can keep perfectly with it, well... I suppose that's the same as with drums.

Teacher/everything else, though.

i find that when i learn to play a song i will keep playin that same song over and over again but its better to keep learning new stuff. and always set yourself a challenge and try to stretch your abilities.

Just get yourself motivated and make sure you enjoy playing

My teacher wasn't very strict with me for a LONG time, and consequently my playing didn't improve nearly as much as it should have. Then I discovered on my own what an amazing instrument the piano was and the beautiful music it is capable of so I had a moan at her to be more strict with me and now I'm above grade 8 standard.

I've been having lessons for alittle over a month now and my teacher is very strict. She expects me to pratice more than my grade 4 standard friend. But thats because I need piano for Uni.

It doesn't matter what stage you are of learning, you still need to practice LOADS. If you're just beginning to learn an instrument, you'll have to practice alot to sort out technique, posture, build finger strength etc. But if you're a more advanced player you'll have to practice alot to make sure that the pieces you're learning, which would obviosuly be getting harder, are played correctly, and well. The better you claim to be as a pianist, the higher people's standards are going to be before they hear you, and you wouldn't want to f.uck up and embarass yourself because you didn't practice enough, would you?
