I'm glad to say that piano/keys has come back for today's modern rock. I may not enjoy it too much, but it makes the young ones want to start this all of a sudden "cool" instrument.

Nah, that's cool, I understand I'm of a minority.

No music is useless noise. That's a completely immature thign to say. Death Metal is one of my favourite genres because when you first listen to it it sounds like useless noise.

i would actually like to learn to play a few chords on a keyboard really.
i play bass.
keyboards would rock, especially if i could go to the keyboard in the middle of a song(with my bass still around my neck) and play a melody in a gig and then go back to playing bass
i have big dreams for me.

lol, don't worry. Simple chords are easy to learn. Just do like this (X is hit the key, O is skip it):
OXOXOXO
Pretty much anywhere on the keyboard, that'll make a chord. Also...
OXOXOOX
I think that's it... yeah, pretty sure it is.
^_^
You should get a chord book or something though... and definetely a teacher if you're serious.

But seriously I'm just starting to get into piano of late (usually play guitar). Much harder to teach yourself, in my opinion, in terms of learning a song that you like. I'm working on The Luckiest by Ben Folds. Have the intro down. Anyway I think there is still plenty of piano being played just not as the main instrument. Although there still are quite a few good "mainstream" piano based acts such as Ben Folds, Nick Cave, Torim Amos and Regina Spektor to name a few.

Pianos are rarely used as main instruments in bands anymore. Secondary and backup's what I usually see.
And how can you say Mortal Treason ISN'T death metal?
o_O
Keane is absolutly HUGE in the UK.
They consist of a singer, a drummer and... a pianist. And believe me, they are HUGE over here in Britain. So it's not really outdated :)

BUT they also suck.
A better example would be Coldplay. Sure they suck, but not quite as much as Keane.
Muse incorporates it quite well too. I think it's bigger in Britain than in America, just as a general trend.

I just got into Piano a couple of weeks ago. I love it. I could already read music (although I was a little rusty) and I'm having a blast with it. I play banjo, mandolin, guitar (acoustic/electric) bass and toy around with drums. My keyboard has quickly become one of my faveorite instruments.

Why not say 1 3 5 for a major (in general) and flatten the 3rd for a minor?

Because...
... well...
Flatten the third? People who have NEVER played piano won't know what that means... eeyeah... lol
And I can play using 1 3 5. However, I play major chords like this all the time:
3 4 5
Or this:
1 2 4
Or:
1 2 3
It all depends what my other fingers are doing and what I'm gonna be doing next. Generally, I prefer 1 3 5, but like I said... it all depends.

the one 135 is my favorite way too, you can find your basic chords anywhere like that.
but sometimes it's just easier to pla chords different.

Thats the way to think of it. It's the theoretical way of looking at it, for any instrument.

I'd say Mortal Treason is closer to metalcore than death. Death metal is more complex, and it’s usually fast and intense…and then in Mortal Treason’s songs there’s a lack of solos that I never noticed in death metal.

Same chord as the basic 1 3 5, just different fingerings was what I was talking about.
I play Keyboards/piano, guitar, bass, violin, mandolin, banjo, ect.
And I'm only 14.
I play piano, guiatar (a bit, granted), drums, euphonium, various percussions, etc.

I love Keane, but I understand they're not everyone's thing - pretty "poppy", repetitive type stuff.
Coldplay is much, much worse. And they're not a better example, because their simple (and annoying) piano makes Keane's look of a very high quality and complexity (which it isn't). And it's not the main instrument in all their songs, as they use a lot of guitar as well, where Keane has none (other than the bass, of course).
Muse is a far better example than both.

No, Keane really make me sick. ITs just so false- the first time I heard it, it was like "great, almost midi sounding piano and drums and heavily pitch corrected vocals, this really deserves merit..."
I guess its really the pop buying british public I should be directing my anger towards, but they're just TERRIBLE!

Threadstarter's stupid.
More people play piano when they are younger, more people give up before they get into music with piano in. They don't know what they're missing in my opinion.

Fair comment. I guess it just appeals to the pop-buying Australian side of me.
But surely you can't say that Coldplay is all that much better?

08-25-2005, 06:42 AM
All of Coldplay's songs sound the same, if the piano in 'speed of sound' didn't sound exactly like the piano in 'clocks' i might have a higher opinion of them. Chris Martin is a good pianist, but his composing side is slightly less impressive.

Most keyboardists or pianists I know don't play mainstream music which is why you don't often see bands with keyboard/piano because especially piano is more of a classical instrument, like a double bass, sometimes you'll see one but not often, it's a classical instrument not a contempary.

Rock music without a piano or at least a keyboard is lacking.
I mean electric keys have their place in rock bands but I'm a pianist, not a keyboardist; when I play in my band (my church band) I play a keyboard but as a piano (I wish we had a piano, but we don't); I rarely if ever use any other voices. I'm not a keyboardist. A real piano would sound about 800 times better.
But without the keyboard on piano setting, the band would be lacking.
Any band can be improved with a piano.

Because of the types of music that everyone is into these days...
All the more reason to...Technically, a keyboard is a piano, and controlling MIDI tracks with them is really unlimited to the types of music you can play.

Seriously, just look at Rhapsody... Alex Staropoli HAS to be classicaly trained (he writes for an entire orchestra, plus the rest of his band with the help of only one other person), yet they play metal. The singer as well has to be classicaly trained.
So don't tell me clasically trained people don't like metal. Just go listen to Rhapsody.

Stuff like NWAHM, I agree, it isn't very interesting, but there are a lot of metal bands who create music that's just as complex, beautiful, and unique as classical music. Many, like crazyguy832 pointed out, even incorporate classical into the music they write.
