umm. this is the lyric forum. you could get more help in the guitar forums oir the jam session (ask for questions about theory maybe)

starting a song is easy. for rock, folk, punk, pop, and most music styles, you can use a simple chord progression. take the harmonized chords of a major scale. (ill just do c major cuz its easy)
I II III IV V VI VII
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim

the roman numerals represent the scale degree. thats so you can transpose it into any key. without getting you too confused, it basically means, you can use any of those chords in any random order and theyll still be in the key of C major and chances are theyll sound good. a common progression you can use to start writing songs is
C - F - G (you can use any orders of these chords, in any key, and itll sound like a song)

that was a really bad theory explanation. basically, try using these chords:
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim
and mess around with the order.

another way to start a song is to write a melody (tune of the song) and then put chords to it later. sometimes, when i do this, i end making my melody that i originally wrote for guitar the melody for my vocals.

writing songs just takes practice. study a lot of songs by people you admire, and try to recreate their stuff. good luck :]

Am x 4 - G - F x 3 - G and repeat.

I was in the same boat as you are. I had been playing around two years but never had i written a song. Luckily, while i was playing the guitar i mannaged to slap together some okay sounding progression, so i just ran with those. But, lately I've had to make new ones for new songs. Do this. Find a chord you like, lets say Am. Think of were you want the sound to go after that, say you want another minor, but maybe a little higher. So now you've mannaged to put together Am and Dm. Now you want something to make the mood a little brighter, so you add G.
You can do that or just randomly play chords until something pops up and says "I just sounded usefull and awesome"
Try to go for 4 chords to make a verse, maybe another 4 chords for the chorus. You can use more or less but that seems to be standered.
Once you've got the music, just play the progression over and over until some words and a pitch strike your fancy, then run with it.
