I started off writing lyrics/poetry to rid myself of some unwanted anger and depression. As I wrote I found that talking about myself in a poem was pointless, I already knew everything I wrote.

After a while I realised the best effective way to release emotions was to write from the point of view of someone else, in 1st person.

I was wondering if anyone else used this method. Is it cheating?

Your title...um...odd use of 'within'

How is it cheating? It's not.

Sometimes, but it's often easier and more interesting to express your own feelings and point of views. Plus people are going to think its your pov anyway when they hear it, so it might as well be something you believe in. And no its not cheating.
