Vans Warped Tour - July 26th, 2005 @ Darien Lake PAC, Buffalo NY

Here is a short review of my top five performances from this years Warped Tour.

5. Hawthorne Heights - They were the second band of the day to play, and they did a great job of getting the crowd pumped up. They were energetic, and got a great response from the crowd.

Favorite Songs: "Niki FM", "Silver Bullet"

4. Fall Out Boy - They had by far the largest crowd of any of the bands that I saw. They had a ton of energy, and put on a great show. They also achieved the largest mosh pit of any band I saw when they played "Saturday" to close out their set.

Favorite Songs: "Saturday", "I Slept With Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me"

3. The Starting Line - For some reason, a lot of people left after Fall Out Boy, and didn't hang around for TSL. However, the people who hung around were not dissapointed. TSL put on an amazing show and kept the crowd moving, while playing a good mix of old and new music.

Favorite Songs: "Surprise Surprise", "Best of Me"

2. Saosin - These guys were really impressive. I had never really listen to them before, but they put on a tremedous show. A lot of people seemed to not know who they were, as they were an unexpected addition to the main stage (as was Hawthorne Heights), but they got a great reception.

Favorite Songs: "Seven Years", "Translating the Name"

1. Senses Fail - These guys were absolutely incredible. The crowd was so pumped up throughout their whole set. There was non-stop moshing, crowd surfing, and jumping the whole time. They were energetic, exciting, and easily the most fun band of the night.

Favorite Songs: "Lady in the Blue Dress", "Stephen"

Oh, and if your wondering why Thrice didn't make the top five, it's because a thunderstorm ended their set after just 5 minutes, and they never came back on. :upset:

I didn't go to Warped Tour...and I'm not sorry.

Sounds Of The Underground freakin kicked ***.

Mustard Plug was pretty okay.

Atreyu, Unearth, and Norma Jean was fun as freakin hell.

Warped 2003 was pretty bad ***.

The Suicide Machines were pretty good.

DKM/The Casualties could have been better.

Rancid had a lack of energy.

From First To Last...well I don't like to talk about that.

Symphony In Peril...got cancelled because the venue forgot to advertise...

Poison The Well was damn fun.

Those are just off the top of my head. There are a few more.

Another review: Action Action - August 1st, 2005 @ The Icon, Buffalo NY

This past Monday I went to see Spitalfield, Gatsby's American Dream, Waking Ashland, and Action Action. It was the last day of the tour, and all the bands were great. Action Action came on last, and they played an awesome set. At the end of the last song, the band started to completely demolish the stage. The drummer kicked over the bass drum, and then began pounding on one of the shnares so hard that it fell over. Meanwhile, one of the keyboard players almost knocked his keyboard into the crowd. It was hilarious.

I'm not sure, but when I posted those dates yesterday, the site I got them from (absolutepunk) labelled them as Finch tour dates, not Thrice. They corrected it to day, but the article didn't mention if Finch would actually be touring with Skindred and H.I.M.

Absolutepunk labelled the Thrice tour dates as "Finch/H.I.M./Skindred", and I originally posted them as that. Then this morning Absolutepunk corrected themselves saying the dates were Thrice, not Finch, so I wanted to make sure no one was confused.

Here is the article from absolutepunk: http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=81073

And I can't find anything about a Finch/H.I.M./Skindred tour, so I'm guessing it might not be happening, or there are no dates for it yet.

If you read the News thread, you will know that Fenix*TX are playing a show on Friday, August 19 at Clubhouse, Arizona.

Well, you may not know that Homegrown is supporting. That's not really the important part though.

You may not know that this CD will be recorded live and put out by this amazing band who called it quits in 2002. I suggest you go to it, they will no doubt be amazing.

In chronilogical order

Van Halen - Very very good. I thought the bass solo could have been cut from the show, because it was pretty much the bassist wanking on his bass. It was awesome for a reunion, I thought.

Metallica - Not as good as I thought it would be. I think their setlist was very weak. They didn't play as many old songs as I wished they had. Not bad though.

Less than Jake - So so so so awesome. They played every song I wish they played. They played a lot of old stuff, and it was so fun. Hidden in Plain View, Kane Hodder, and These Green Eyes played with them. I liked These Green Eyes the best. Kane Hodder sucked royally, and I'm not really into Hidden in Plain View, but they weren't bad.

Lamb of God - Great great great. I don't really think anything bad happened (ie. crappy setlist, sound) and the crowd was crazy.

I can't see Thrice later this fall, because of a marching band coommitment. I am very upset about that.

Really? When I saw them, they played only three songs from St. Anger, and the rest were older. It was an amazing show. The best non-pop-punk show I've seen.

Well they played Turn the Page, Fuel, some songs off Load and Reload that I don't remember, and totally butchered Fade to Black by stopping halfway and yelling chants.

They played a handful of good shows, and those were great. I just wasn't satisfied because of the amount of 1990+ songs.

Oh. When I saw them they played a good variety of songs. They played one or two great songs from each album. It was the longest set I think I've ever seen too.

Godsmack opened, and they were pretty good also.

In chronilogical order

Van Halen - Very very good. I thought the bass solo could have been cut from the show, because it was pretty much the bassist wanking on his bass. It was awesome for a reunion, I thought.

Omg I'm Jealous :P do you know if they're going to tour again in Europe?

EmoSreamoPunk - Yeah.. I stayed in our car in the parking lot until I heard Godsmack was done

w00t! I've just got back from a Green Day tribute band called Green Dayz (wow, what an oringinal name... haha) and I managed to nick the setlist and hug 'Billie Joe'. It was pretty kewl.

They played:
American Idiot
Longview
Welcome To Paradise
86
Chump
Geek Stink Breath
Brain Stew
Hitchin A Ride
2000 Lightyears Away
Nice Guys Finish Last
Warning
Blvd. Of Broken Dreams
St Jimmy
Holiday
Basket Case
She
When I Come Around
WMUWSE
Time Of Your Life
Minority

They weren't that bad, except the bass was out of tune most of the way through and he kept forgetting the words. Oh well, I had fun...

Where the hell do you get the money for all of these concerts? I'm lucky if I get to 3 major ones a year. All I've gone to this year is 4 local shows, and the Warped Tour. I have Ska is Dead, and Converge lined-up. That's it. I've seen Blink-182(twice), Sum41, MCR, The Used, Taking Back Sunday(twice), The Casualties, Alexisonfire(twice), Anti-Flag, Dillinger Esc. Plan, Big D and the Kids Table, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Transplants, Thrice, Lost City Angels, Closet Monster, Dead Letter Dept., Hostage Life, Brat Attack, Bombs Over Providance, Offspring, Billly Talent(twice), Rise Against, A7X, The Kinison, Future's Past, The Casualties, Greenday, Sugarcult, New Found Glory, and Jersey. Most of those bands were viewed at festivals.

The 'big' bands I've seen are Blink-182, Sugarcult (same tour) and My Chemical Romance.

Other bands I've seen are The Kinison, Million Dead, Skindred and Open Hand

MCR was probably better, because ti was at the London Astoria (which is awesome, really tight), and the fans were all going craxy (even if half of them were just there because the band are 'hot'). Open Hand were on before, they're really good, kinda QOTSA-ish, but all the idiot emo goths were like 'YOU SUCK' everytime there was a break between songs, which was really disrespectfull.

Blink-182/Sugarcult was the first concert I went to, it was at Wembley Arena, the hugest place ever. Sugarcult probably played betetr, hada tighter soudn and voerall better quality, but Blink-182 were just awesome because I like nearly all of their songs, and it was one of the last times they came to the UK before they split up.

I saw Million Dead before they became semi 'big' in the UK, so basically yeah, :) Skindred also played at a local place, the reggae/metal stuff they did was awesome, people went crazy for it!

Best Show Ever Ive Seen: Fall out Boy in a hole in the wall in Bellvile. The place was falling apart and it was about the size of a litter box, but there guys rocked it like it was a freaking arena show. My cousin got hit in the face by Pete's bass like 8 times we were so cramped. This was about a month after Take This To Your Grave came out and only people up north new how good this band was. I went up there to visit my cousins and see a show, who new i would be watching one of the best pop-punk bands to come around in a long long time. I feel a closeness to that band now that i wish others had instead of bandwagon fans, but then again i kno there are true fans out there who just didnt get the oppurtunity that i did

I don't like alkaline trio that much, but they had some ****ing nice looking girls in the pit :naughty:

Here is a short review of thw show I went to last night:

Whole Wheat Bread - These guys were impressive. They had a ton of energy and their set was a lot of fun. The crowd seemed really into it, and it was overall a good time. If you've never heard of them check out my thread. Trust me, these guys are really talented.

A Wilhelm Scream - I love this band, and they put on an awesome show. They're incredibly good musicians, and they're really intense. The only downside to their set was that very few people seemed to be real into them. The crowd was actually pretty calm considering the energy of the music. I managed to get the setlist from the stage when they were finished playing, but I can't make out what a couple of the songs are, but here are the one's I can decipher (in order):

"Killing It"
"The King Is Dead"
"Famous Friends And Fashion Drunks"
"The Soft Sell"
"Catharsis For Dummies"
"Me Vs. Morrissey In The Pretentiousness Contest (The Ladder Match)"
"Mute Print"
"The Rip"

Catch 22 - I've only seen a couple of ska bands, but I'm starting to believe that ska shows are some of the most fun. Catch 22 put on an incredible show. The band and the crowd had a lot of energy, and it was really a great time.

I thought it was going to be crazy, but it really wasn't. I was at the stage, and only a couple people around me seemed to know any of the words, or even have any interest in the band. The pit was pretty small to, and it really wasn't that intense. It was disappointing.

Hopefully when I see them with Pennywise (October 2nd), the crowd will be better.

Man, that sucks well when I think about it if I was hangin with my friends and I put some Wilhelm Scream on they probably wouldn't know what it was, but I figure most people at the show would've been in the pit.

I thought that the music was intense enough to start a big pit, even if the people didn't know who they were, but I guess not. I think a lot of the kids were only there for Catch 22.

It was definately a great show, and I think most of the people did appreciate AWS, but I think they just didn't know the music.

I'm guessing the people at the Pennywise show will know the music a lot better, so that show should be incredible. A Wilhelm Scream is one of my favorite bands at the moment.

DepthsOfDreams555
10-02-2005, 02:30 PM
Alright so last night I saw mewithoutYou, Dredg, Blood Brothers, and Coheed and Cambria. They all were good I mean the others were alright they weren't very good but still okay.

mewithoutYou- Alright so these guys aren't one of the bands I like very much but they still were okay. There set was more funny than anything. They played January 1979 first,(I'm pretty sure that is the name of the song) and the lead singer was going crazy and like spinning around and he has a jacket on and it was comming off and the sleeve hit his mike stand and it was falling over and he grabbed it but the mike slipped out so he took the drummers ride cymbal mike and used that. Then the lead singer was like is there a guy named Dustin in here, and a kid goes "My dadd's name is Dustin" the lead singer said No one cares about your dad. So they found Dustin and he proposed to this girl and she said yes so that was cool. The lead singer was like she only said yes because there are like 1000 people watching she will dump you after the show. So it was pretty funny then a fat guy came out before their second to last song and like read this thing he was funny. Then the lead singer was playing a pot like just hittin it with a drum stick wow. Then he played the accordia. I just don't like these guys because the vocals aren't any good IMO he doesn't really sing he just kind of talks. It was good set though they had a lot of energetic songs not many people were into them and the band kind of looked mentally retarded on the stage but w/e.

Dredg- Not many people were into them either and they had a guitar problem after the first song and it took like 10 minutes to fix and it was annoying but w.e. Every single time the drummer had like a hard snare hit he would raise his arm way up and then smash it down it was kind of fun to watch then he threw like 942592 drum sticks I just thought of him throwing one and then go to get another one and he didn't have any left but that didn't happen.

Blood Brothers- These guys also had the fat guy do an intro for him it was something about animals and losing tongues it was dumb. I had listened to them like once before and I really didn't care for them much but they were still good. When they did sound checks the black guitarist was like woooaaa woooaaa he got some laughs. He was really cool. They had a ton of energy and it was an okay set even if I didn't enjoy the music very much.

Coheed and Cambira- This was my first time seeing them and now that I have I am planning on seeing them every single chance I get. It just blew me away how awesome the show was. I was right up in the front row right on the fence right by the stage. This was small theatre and they packed so many people in there. They opened up with just like Keeping the Blade playing and then the band came out. Claudio had his double neck, they opened with Always and Never, then played Welcome Home, and Ten Speed right away it was awesome. I'm not exactly sure how they played em out, but they played Everything Evil last before the encore and they played Delirium Trigger. They played Three Evils Blood Red Summer, and A Favor House Atlantic. They also played Apollo I: The Writing Writer, Wake Up, and The Suffering. They came back out and played In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 and The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut. Travis does this cool thing with the mike in The Final Cut.

The show was awesome I had a great time I almost got a drum stick but I left like a split second before he threw them and the kid standing next to me got it. Claudio threw his bandana during the show but it was opposite where I was standing. The other kid who got a drum stick was barfing all over himself at the back of the pit after the show and I was like YAAA he was like YAAA. It was excellent!

I saw the Fat tour on Friday night, and it was excellent. It was at a venue called Rhino's that had been renovated not too long ago. The place was really nice, but the sound was a little off. The guitar was way too loud, and you could just barely hear the vocals. We got there early and got good spots right on the side of the stage.

The Soviettes
They opened up with a pretty energetic set. I haven't listened to the band that much, so I didn't know many of their songs. Their lead singer reminds me of a female Johnny Ramone. There wasn't a pit until the last song they played, "Paranoia Cha Cha!" or something like that. They put on a good show, and I'll definitely have to listen to them more.

Smoke Or Fire
They were amazing. I hadn't listened to them much, but I downloaded their CD afterwards and it's great. I think they were pretty close to being as good as AM!. There was so much energy. The guitar and bass player were jumping around the whole time and running up to each other. I got a shirt, a sticker, and some pins at their merch table.

The Epoxies
Possibly one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. The bassist had one of those old Fat Mike-esque basses with a skinny body and no tuning pegs. They all came out on stage and the keyboard player was making weird noises and stuff and the lead singer wasn't on stage yet and everyone was wondering where she was. She was standing right next to me and I said hi to her. Right when the song started she jumped on stage and was dancing around and stuff. I forget all the songs that they played, but it was a pretty good set. As the drummer was walking off stage, he chugged the rest of his water and handed me his bottle. And when they were cleaning up all the stuff, I snagged a piece of tape that was holding the keys in place.

Against Me!
They were insane. During the previous 3 sets, there was only a small area of pit, but pretty much everyone was going nuts during AM!. EVERYONE was singing along, and people were even running up on stage and grabbing the mic from the lead singer. He didn't really care, he just backed up and played guitar while people passed around the microphone. I was right up on the stage so I was pretty much bent over it the whole time because people kept getting pushed into me. It was so much fun though.

I'd highly recommend this to anyone if it comes to your town. It was only $10 to get in, to boot.

Last night, I went to see Pennywise, H2O, Death By Stereo, and A Wilhelm Scream. I haven't been to a big club in a really long time, but it was really cool. It was the last night of the tour as well, and the bands all had a ton of energy.

A Wilhelm Scream
I'm in love with this band, but apparently the rest of my town isn't. This is the second time I've seen them in two months, yet very few people were even at the show when they came on, and most of the people who were didn't reallly seem to know the music all too well. I'd was still an excellent show, however. These guys seem to have so much fun performing, and they are really incredible. The played basically the same set as the last time I saw them, but it was still great.

Death By Stereo
I don't listen to these guys all too often, but they still put a pretty awesome show. The crowd was incredibly into them, and they had a lot of energy. I knew a couple of their songs, and I enjoyed them more than I expected to. The only downside was that I was standing on the edge of the pit where a lot of kids were doing all sorts of spin kicks and hardcore dancing. I was pretty lucky not to get myself killed. :-/

H2O
I didn't really know these guys at all, but they weren't bad. The crowd seemed to really like them, and their set was pretty good. During the middle of their set, A Wilhelm Scream hung a Boston Red Sox flag behind them to mess with them, as I'm guessing they must be from New York. This brought about a chant of "Let's Go Yankees!" (stupid Yankees fans). Then, after that whole ordeal was over, they played a couple more songs, one of which I knew; "Guilty By Association". It was really a surprisingly good set. I'll definately be checking out one of their albums in the near future.

Pennywise
I really only know their newer music, which they didn't play much of, but they were great. They mixed in quite a few political messages between songs, which seemed to reenergize the crowd quite well. I was in the pit for the whole set, and it got pretty crazy. Overall though, it was a great time, and well worth the $16.

Last Night was the final show on this tour, and it was really a lot of fun. The only minor disappointment was that the Chariot dropped off the tour, so I didn't get a chance to see them play.

The Esoteric
I'd never heard of these guys before last night, but they were actually pretty good. I don't think the crowd knew them much either though, because they were pretty calm through the whole set.

The Red Chord
These guys were pretty wild. Their set was really cool, and they managed to get a huge pit going. Even though I didn't really know their music, I liked them a lot.

High On Fire
Another band that I had never heard of before last night. I didn't think their set was that great, because the guitar completely drowned out the vocals, making the set seem like a completely instrumental. The guitarist was extremely talented though.

Every Time I Die
These guys were playing about an hour away from their hometown, and they put on an excellent show. Part of the set was being taped, which was pretty cool, and the whole set was impressive. The venue was completely full when they came on, and it was impossible to move. They played a good mix of old and new music, and the crowd was awesome. It was really a great show.

I missed Every Time I DIe when they came to Dallas. I was very upset.

That sucks. They are from here (Buffalo) but they had to play in Rochester because there wasn't a venue for them to play around here. So I had to travel an hour to see them, but it was worth it.

The show I went to tonight ended up being one of the oddest experiences of my life. It was totally bizarre, all because of one band. Anyway, here's a recap:

Rad Affairs
These guys were the first to play, and although I had never heard of them before, they were quite enjoyable. They had some major technical difficulties at the start of their set however, and it took about 20 minutes to get everything sorted out. Once they got back to playing they were really pretty good.

Infamous
Basically, they guys ****ing sucked. Their music wasn't much good, and they were total pricks. Here's why:

After playing about 5 or so songs, the bassist announced that they had three more songs left, but the sound guy at the club told the band they only had time for one. This apparently made the bassist mad, because he said that the sound guy couldn't stop them from playing, and that he would go after him if he did.

So after the band finished their next song, the sound guy turned off their mikes, signaling the end of the set, at which time the bassist jumped off the stage and sprinted toward the sound booth, along with the lead singer. He then jumped up on to the sound board, and the club was in a bit of chaos. There was quite a bit of shouting and screaming going on as well.

The bassist also took a bunch of shots at some of the more well-known promoters around here, and basically told everyone to "**** off".

Rivalry
After the whole incident was cleared up, these guys took the stage. I've seen them once before, and they are really pretty good. They lightened up the mood and the club, and refocused everyone's attention on the excellent music that was up ahead.

Marathon
There is really only one way to describe these guys; ****ing awesome. There set was absolutely incredible. I knew the majority of their songs, and I had a ton of fun throughout the whole set. The lead singer spent most of the time in the crowd, instead of on stage, too. Overall, these guys were the best band to play, and one of the better bands I've seen in a while.

Dead Hearts
These guys were really good too. They are from around here, and most of the people in the crowd seemed to know every word to every song. They had a ton of energy, and they really got the crowd going.

So anyway, that was my adventure for the night. Aside from the one incident, it was really an excellent show.

DepthsOfDreams555

That sounds really sweet I bet Marathon was really sweet.......that is crazy dude I would've been so pissed at that bassist I would've like got a gun and shot that guy.

Darkbuster:
Like all the openers, I had no familiarity with this band, but they were surprisingly good for the first band up. Played a lot of Punk to open, but also threw in some ska towards the end. They were good, but not $10 CD good, tempted though I was to hear them on album. I'll try to download it. Also, the chick guitarist/keyboardist was fairly good looking, so that's always a plus. Played a 30 minute or so set which was the perfect length for them, I could see myself getting bored with them after awhile but the short set worked to their favor and made it very enjoyable, I definitely plan to check them out.

Lost City Angels:
These guys would have been so much better with a 30 minute set, the extra 15 minutes pushed them into the broing area unfortunately. High high energy, definitely got the crowd into it, but unfortunately the songs were all the same in a bad way. Not a Bad Religion or Ramones way. The singer was also one of the most scene people ever. I could have sworn it was a clone of the guy from My Chemical Romance. The rest of the guys fit the Punk image well enough though, so the singer really stood out. He did his job well though so not really a complaint against him. The band needs a more uniform image though.

Ganggreen:
So hearing this band I immediately thought old school Hardcore. Turns out DKM brought them out of retirement (or something like that) to tour with one of their musical heroes. The guys in DKM were saying they listened to these guys when they were 14/15, so obviously it is quite old school, but it was very good. The frontman is a very gifted musician. Though I'm not a fan of old Hardcore so much, I thoroughly enjoyed this show. One of the guys from DKM even came out and sang with them for a song. I probably won't look into them more, but they're very good.

Dropkick Murphys:
These guys rocked. Drunken pits aren't the best of times, and frankly the scent of alcohol was so cloying and strong I felt like I was at some party. And plenty of people were wasted like they were. Drunk bitches are so annoying. Anyways, once the show started it was great, high energy and the crowd was into it the whole time, only Dillinger Escape Plan's crowd beat the intensity of this crowd as far as I can recall. Good mix of slow and fast stuff too to keep it interesting. I wish I had more of their CDs as I didn't know many of the songs they played. Oh well, still a blast. Oh, and the encore was probably the best I've ever seen. They come out and play a song, then invite girls on stage to dance, and probably 50-100 come up. They play a song or two like this, then invite anyone to come on stage. The stage is packed to capacity, and this is a huge huge stage. Probably a few hundred people up there. They play more and the guy from Ganggreen joins them and sings with them, and then they close with a cover of AFI's cover of Halloween. God that was incredible. Great encore performance. Blew away the rest of their show easily.

Good band, you're a really lucky man. You should really remember this as they are a class Boston band, of course not as good as Siege. When Gang Green formed they were only 14, 15 at the oldest so I assume they wouldn't be too old. If you are interested in getting some songs, I have an album on soulseek.

Funeral Diner
Wow, that was one hell of a show! It's not often that one of the most awsome emo bands nowdays show up at your local stage in Norway! That was totally awsome!
Best Song: City of Webs

AFI
One of my favourite gig of all time. This was when during the Sing the Sorrow Tour. Four guys making a crowd rage! It took us 7 hours to drive up to the stage and we listened to the album constantly.
Best Song: Dancing Through Sunday

Torch
This music is a kick in your balls! Almost sets the stage on fire with their totally rad pyrotechnics! And the singer/screamer was screaming so hard i almost blew his pulmonary veins.
Best Song: The Experiment

Boy Sets Fire
When we heard that these guys were coming to the blitzhouse in Oslo we ditched school imediatly and ordered tickets 2 days before the show. I've never believed that they could get so many people into a that small of a room. One guy even fainted because of the lack of oxygen, but it was worth it. No moshpits though, the room was too crowded so we did'nt get able to move to much.

The New Trust:
My favorite of the three openers was surprisingly (and sadly) first. Comprised of two guys and two chicks, it was a pretty odd looking band at first. However, save Minus the Bear, this was probably the most talented group in the venue tonight. The drummer (chick) was extremely talented and that was definitely the first thing that drew my attention as a drummer, but all the musicians were very competent and skilled on their instruments. It had cool off beat rhythms and was pretty technical sounding. Plus tapping riffs and all that sort of thing. If I hadn't come ill prepared and broke I definitely would have picked up one of their five dollar CDs. This was also their last show on this tour, and Minus the Bear brought them several shots throughout their set and it seemed like a good time all around. They ended on a good note. I plan on looking to find some of their music somewhere.

Criteria:
The highlight of this band was definitely the bassist. The crowd named him "Socrates" from the moment he walked on stage due to his immense beard and bald top, with long hair on the sides to match. Plus the guy looked to be a good 30 years older than all the other members of the band. He rocked. Good bassist/singer too. The music itself was pretty bland modern rock. Not exactly boring, but pretty generic so that I was ready to have them let the next band on fairly quickly.

Headphones:
Interesting band. Comprised of a drummer and a keyboardist/vocalist. That was it. Played fairly good music. Not my style, but definitely well composed and worth checking into if you're into lots of synthesizer and laid back indie style rock/"emo." I definitely enjoyed them more though standing for slow bands is less than awesome. The singer also seemed on the verge of tears a few times which was kind of weird and "emo" of him. Nonetheless they played a good entertaining set, I just wish I'd had a chair.

Minus the Bear:
Not as good as I expected them to be. Definitely a lot of fun, but not very high energy from the band. Also the last show I went to with such a low energy crowd was Dredg, and that had a lot more energy than this one. The sole exception was this one guy, who was frankly a douche and in his quest to have a rockin' time tried to start a mosh from the start of the show to the end and clearly everyone around was pissed. I'm all for having a good time...but don't ruin other people's experience. It's Minus the Bear, and he was acting like it was Dillinger Escape Plan. I think he got his shows mixed up. Anyways, the band. I wish I was 21 so I could have gone to the bar and sat down, because there was really no energy in the crowd, and I think that detracted from the show, but the music was good and these guys are very talented. Too bad the crowd has such an effect on how good the show is.

Last night I went to see the Before The Blackout After the Breakup tour. It was really a lot of fun.

Jettasen
I hadn't heard these guys before, but they were pretty good. Nothing spcial, but still fun.

Houston Calls
This is my second time seeing these guys, and I really enjoy them. They put on a pretty cool show.

Fenix TX
As most of you probably know, Fenix TX has been broken up for a while now, but has returned for this final tour. I haven't been listening to these guys for long, but I still wanted to go and see them, as I probably won't get another chance. Anyway, they didn't disappoint their whole set was excellent.

During their last song, they let eveyone in the crowd go up on the stage to sing along while they played. It was incredible to be on stage with these guys, and a great way to end their set. So awesome...

Allister
These guys were a lot of fun as well. They played a good mix of music from each of their albums, and their whole set was great. They had a lot of energy, and even managed to get a circle pit started during "None of My Friends are Punks", even though there were only maybe seventy kids a the show. Overall, they were pretty cool.

Valiant Thor:
This was a surprise band as they weren't listed on any of the listings for this show, and it was apparently their last show on this tour. They seemed to be good friends with Strung Out too, but I'll talk about that in Strung Out's review. As to their music, it seemed a little out of place on a Punk tour, but it was good, sort of an 80's style metal band. Attire included. All of them were very talented musicians though, the lead guitarist was insane and the drummer was very good too. The frontman was also maybe the ballsiest I've ever seen. Obviously as the first of five bands, the crowd was still small and not really getting into the music, so the guy jumps the barricades and starts pulling people down to the front and then starts giving a speech as if he were going to start a riot (and really he didn't totally fail at that). Then he gets the crowd real into it and goes back on stage, but this man was all over the place. Very entertaining to watch. I wasn't compelled to buy a CD though.

Section 8:
I've already started to forget these guys unfortunately, not that they were that bad, but they weren't that good either. The music was enjoyable enough and I think it had some potential, but it's still in its infancy. It was kind of Hardcore, but not super intense or anything. Enjoyable but forgettable.

A Wilhelm Scream:
Man, this band was sooo fun. I'm not sure if I was looking forward to these guys or Strung Out more, but they certainly put on a great show. The small crowd that was there at the time was also full of fans and so it was pretty fun, but man, if these guys can get a big crowd that enjoys them, that would be great fun. Totally worth seeing again. Good set list too, played some of my favorites. I wish they'd had more time. In fact if they had switched slots with Stretch Arm Strong this would have been an even better show. Oh, and the singer was wearing a The Kinison shirt. That made me smile.

Stretch Arm Strong:
Let me take a minute to reiterate how much I hate Hardcore dancing. Two-stepping is the bastard child of skanking and looks a million times stupider. Flailing your arms and legs trying to kill people is even stupider. Barring the terrible crowd (of Hardcore dancers) this band was decent though. I knew they were Hardcore beforehand, and the dancing gave it away too, but really I couldn't even see it until the end of their set. They were easily the least energetic band of the night and the least technically talented. By the end it was pretty easy to get into the music, but honestly for most of their set I was wondering two things: "How is this classified as Hardcore, even at a stretch?" and "When will their set be over?" Still, I think I may download an album just to see if it'll grow on me like it did during the set.

Strung Out:
Yay. What a fun time this band was. I need more of their CDs I didn't know about 40% of what they played, but since I own most of their recent stuff, that's really cool because it means they were playing their old stuff. The set was lots of fun and most of the crowd was singing along the whole time. There were also several people filming it. It'd be neat if they were filming it for a video of some sort but I doubt it. Jason was literally dripping with sweat 2 songs in. That's how much the band was putting into the show, and it was great. During the show Valiant Thor came back out and danced with Strung Out and on their last song pre-encore Valiant Thor's drummer played with the band for about half a song. It was totally goofy but cool a the same time. It just goes to show what a bunch of great guys Strung Out are. As a bonus, after their encore I got to meet Rob and Jake as they wandered along the barricade. Both totally friendly guys and totally into their fans. When I told Jake what an influence the band was to me as a musician he came right up and hugged me and told me how much it means for them to be sharing their music and stuff, and it was really cool. Totally great guys and they were still hanging out meeting fans when I left. I think that's really cool. Lots of bands get big and forget their fans, but these guys were talking to guys about everything and anything and really loving it. That's so great.

Thursday 20th October- Captain Everything! at the London Underworld

What a f'ucking good day! My bank account has taken a bit of a battering but it sure was worth it. These guys are a really good fun pop-punk band, who play some great high-paced sing along music. This si the seventh time i've seen them and i've enjoyed every time immensly.

First of all me and my brother happened to bump into the band on the street as we were heading to a record store. Had a bit of a chat with them as always and then bumped into them, again in the pub above the venie where we had a quick drink.

On stage they were terrific fun. Mass stage invasions occured throughout, i think i got up there about 4 times and both Jon the bassist and Lewis the guitarist were repetedly held aloft whilst playing! I came away from the show with no voice, a set list and a drum stick which was great.

I also bought a few patches for my jacket, a Filaments t-shirt, a CE poster, got a free CD and pulled a pretty good looking girl.

I was also recognised by the singer of a band called Fireapple Red and had a chat with him which was nice!

Great show, great night, great band.

9.5/10

PS i have got a shocking hangover right now, i feel like sh!t :(

Whopps, forgot to post this:

mewithoutyou:
These guys were good in my opinion, but most of the crowd wasn't too into them. They were pretty high energy though and it was a good show. The "singer" (he mainly talks) came out wearing a mask at first and that caught the attention of the crowd. It was crazy though, last time I saw these guys none of them how beards, and now like half the band did. It was weird. Mostly, actually I think all, new stuff, which isn't bad, but didn't make for much variety. Short set too. The guys are real humble and shy though. The singer basically apologized to the crowd for taking up their time when they were probably there for Coheed, Dredg or Blood Brothers. The crowd yelled back "We love you guys too!" it was really nice and cute. Oh, and for their last song they had a jam session and the bassist from Blood Brothers came out and played sax with them. It was pretty neat. The band is a real tight knit group too, they all hugged after the show and stuff, it was pretty cool.

Dredg:
These guys played a fantastic show and honestly should have been just before Coheed. Of note from the previous times I've seen them was definitely the ending. They got to the end and sort of jammed and went crazy, and threw all their instruments into the drumset and went ****ing nuts. No joke. I've never seen the guys get this crazy ever, it was awesome. The crowd also loved it. As I was wearing my Dredg shirt, I got plenty of questions about the band after their performance and hopefully helped the band sell a few CDs based on my recommendations, they deserve it. Definitely better than their ASU set, though I think it was shorter or maybe the same length, not longer. Not as good a set list either, but a better show.

The Blood Brothers:
These guys have gone so far downhill. They played almost exclusively new stuff and frankly their new stuff sucks. They were much much better last time I saw them. They also had a huge period in the middle of their set where they just had the feedback going, and by period I mean at least five minutes. It killed the crowd and from that point on the crowd was much more subdued. They lost all their momentum doing that. The only good songs they played were off the old records, and though some kids were into their new stuff, not enough were to make it fun. I wouldn't pay to see them headlining again which is too bad because last time I saw them they were really good. They played less new stuff then than now, which is weird because the record had just come out back then.

Coheed and Cambria:
If I had missed these guys I wouldn't have known what I missed, but I'm glad I'll never have to find out. These guys rocked. Worth the ticket price by themselves. They played almost the entire new album, plus some stuff from Silent Earth. Nothing from Turbine Blade that I an recall. Despite that, the show is well put together as they bring their own lighting to supplement the venue's, and they have the guillotine off the cover of this album on stage along with several screens showing videos the whole time. Very high tech for what I thought was still a smaller band. They opened with the first three tracks from Apollo in order (the first was a recording of course); their encore was Silent Earth and The Final Cut, with a huge jam session thrown into The Final Cut with some great soloing, Claudio talking into his guitar pickups, behind the head soloing and other fun stuff. Very awesome. Well put together and rehearsed show. Josh's open hand style wowed me as well and now I have a strong desire to learn that myself. Very talented band and they showcase it well live. An interesting side note, there is a third guitarist off stage backing them up most of the show.

See Claudio didn't do anything cool at my show, no solo's behind his head or anything like that. Ya that third guitarist is a guy thats on tour with them, I'm not sure if he is going to be made a part of the band though.

That sucks, I thought their show was really well put together. But if there was less neat showing off it wouldn't have been as good. I mean it was good, but the little things are what pushes bands past good to great live.

You obviously didn't read my review :-\

TBB were the worst act of the night by far. The crowd wasn't hugely into Dredg, but they got pretty into them by the end and people were nodding along and such. Definitely got a great response. mwy was the only crowd fizzle, but they're so distinct that it's hard to get into them at the show. The first time I saw them I was pretty meh about them, but they were a lot better this time since I knew and liked the music. TBB was awful and killed their crowd mid performance.

Dredg was worst. Coheed got the second best response only to TBB... where everyone loved them. And MWY was tight, but not many people liked them.

The Soviettes:
So I was a little wary of the performance these guys would have as I'd heard very mediocre comments about their show. However, their opening song was really catchy and drew me in immediately. I was also wary of a hick band, because we all know women don't belong anywhere near instruments (kidding), however, their best songs were the ones where the guy in the band (drummer) contributed some vocals. He has a real neat voice and I liked it more than the girls, though them all switching off worked well too. In fact, on the compilation I picked up at the show the song by them has the guy singing, and I can say I quite like the song. Too bad it wasn't a more frequent occurence, because I think that's the band's winning formula. Certainly enjoyable though. Oh, the one issue was they literally finished one song, got 4 drum stick clicks, and started the next. They didn't talk to the crowd except when they were leving to say "Thanks, Smoke and Fire are up next." Not conducive to a good crowd response I don't think, especially as an opener.

Smoke or Fire:
I'd heard great things about his band, so I was actually a bit let down by them. I think part of it was I totally wasn't focused during their show and my mind was on other things (yeah, I don't know what was going on there), but there were tons of fans of this band, and I figure they were probably better than I'm giving them credit for. Lots of people there seemed to know all the words and such which is pretty amazig for a non-local second opening band I think. It was pretty good, just not as good as I'd been expecting, oh well. High energy though for sure.

The Epoxies:
By contrast, I'd heard bad things about this band, so I wasn't expecting much. But I can easily say these guys know how to put on a good show. Mind you, the music was so cheesy (especially the keyboard) I didn't enjoy it much at all, but that's not to say they can't perform. They really can. They came out amid tons of fog, with laser beams, strobe lights and other various neat effects. The laser beams on the guitars, and the guitars themselves, were very cool. I need to mount a laser on my guitar haha. Another highlight was the keyboardist busting out a keytar for a song. Oh, and the chick was a good frontwoman too, she was the only performer to come up to the rails and she was always dancing on stage and having a good time.

Against Me!:
Very enjoyable show. No lighting or other effects to drive the show, the whole time the white lights were on the band, and the band drove the show and the songs. Great sing along type songs too, this band really has that down, so it's even more fun because everyone knows the words. These guys are really fun though, they're just up there having a good time, and trying to get everyone else to have a good time too. The jam session (sort of) at the end of Clapping Hands was awesome too, especially as it's my favorite song by them. The drummer was also impressive, 4 piece kit, ride and hats...yet he used it all so effectively it seemed as good as a full kit. Apparently they had an acoustic set somewhere I didn't know about, shoot. Fun time though, assuredly.

Everyday Sunday
Last night I went to see Everyday Sunday at a local church and it was a free show all you had to do was bring like a bar of soap for a charity donation. I saw MuteMath in this same building in the same room and they were really good and they actually packed the room and there was a pretty decent pit with a lot of good energy. Now when Everyday Sunday took the stage there was maybe 100 people in the entire room and this is a pretty big room. Now they tried to have a lot of energy on stage but there was like 15 people into the music. On top of that the music really wasn't very good. They played some new music off their new CD and the lead singer was screaming and it was complete garbage. The funny thing was everyone in the pit had at least like 3 feet from eachother and they were just jumping up and down cause they said no moshing cause the stage was too close to the crowd. So it pretty much stunk, I went in close to the stage for like 2 minutes of one song and I was like second row (wasn't very hard to get there) and there were like 5 black girls standing in the front just kind of clapping I was like wtf. So I just hung out with a couple of my friends and I hung out with the band a lil after the show met them and stuff cause there was like no one there. We were flicking cards and messing around. So w.e it was free.

Taste Of Chaos UK 2005
The night began very crappy when our car broke down in Doncaster, and we had to wait for a tow truck to pick it up. It was a little bit cooler that we arrived at the Dome in the truck, but that's not important.

We also arrived late, pissing me off since Reggie And The Full Effect had already began to play when we were lining up. Inside, the first song I heard from them was "Congratulations Smack & Katy". The energy was awesome, and it appeared that for once James wasn't drunk. He played 4 more songs I think, capping the set off with "The Trooth", a real free-for-all in the pit.

After this, Rise Against took the stage (I think). They were again really good, but ruined by an incredibly short set of about 6 songs. Still, they played a lot of stuff off their older albums, which I really liked, and for some reason didn't play much off their latest album. I suppose being on tour with the "trendy" bands has made them look at themselves a little more.

Story Of The Year were, surprisingly, one of the best bands of the night. Even with their generic material, they put on one hell of a show. From the bassist chasing the drummer around the stage, to them all at one point wearing a horse mask. One of the guitarists got a guitar threw across the stage for him, and the bassist capped it off by stagediving from the speakers. Oh, and they played some good songs too.

Killswitch Engage were good, considering I'm not much of a fan of them. Bert from The Used came out and sang with them for "The End Of Heartaches", which was cool since I only just heard that song in the car.

I was slightly pissed off that Bleed The Dream played the side stage, and I didn't even know until the second to last song. So I enjoyed watching them while The Used were setting up.

The Used were awesome, which again was weird for me since I'm not into them. Even though the guitarist's guitar sounded out of tune, they played some of the classics like "The Taste Of Ink" and "Take It Away". Oh, and in the last song (They said it's the first they wrong, anyone?), they did a little rendition of Refused's "New Noise", with the intro, second verse and bridge of it. Yeah, that was cool. Shame the quality of it on my phone sounds so bad.

Finally it was Funeral For A Friend, a band I'd seen 4 months prior to now. They opened up with "The End Of Nothing", and played more stuff off their two albums. For some reason, "The Art Of American Football" and "Monsters", two of my favourite FFAF songs, weren't played. Either way, watching Matt fall over one of the boxes at the front of the stage was a great laugh as well. All in all, it was a crappy night turned decent, with some good performances, especially from SOTY.

For some reason local venues are starting to book shows on the same day as each other. It's too bad because I'm missing a lot of good bands. Here are some of the conflicts I have over the next couple months:

11/17 - Dropkick Murphy's / Big D and the Kids Table .... or
11/17 - Bury Your Dead / Terror

12/1 - Spitalfield / Plain White T's .... or
12/1 - Action Action / Men, Women, and Children

12/3 - As I Lay Dying / Norma Jean .... or
12/3 - June / Scary Kids Scaring Kids

12/9 - Emery / From Autumn To Ashes .... or
12/9 - Hellogoodbye .... or
12/9 - Against All Authority

I'm probably going to end up seeing Bury Your Dead, Spitalfield, and As I Lay Dying because I already have tickets to those shows, and I probably wouldn't be able to get rid of the tickets if I wanted to. I'll probably go to Emery too.

I hate when this kind of thing happens. I'd go to everyone of those shows if I could :(
