View Full Version : Best sports movies?

Do NOT tell me to put this in Video Games and Movies, because they don't appreciate sports movies as much there. Everyone knows that sports fans are the only real judges for sports movies; disasters like "Remember The Titans", "Bull Durham", "The Replacements", and "Fever Pitch" are green-lighted and directed by non-sports fans.

Why is this so? Because sports fans are the only ones who can appreciate and pick up the subtleties in sports that non-sports fans tend to miss.

My personal favorites are "Field of Dreams", "Hoosiers", "Slap Shot", "The Natural", and "Caddyshack". The original "The Longest Yard" and "Bad News Bears" movies are good too, and I still like "Brian's Song".

I thought the book talked too much about the town and their political stuff too much, but it was still pretty interesting. I really thought Remember the Titans was a great movie.

Anyone see Coach Carter?
People told me that that movie was amazing, then others told me it was awful I haven't seen it yet though.

Oh yeah, Brink and Johnny Tsunami were amazing sports movies...

I like Rocky 1-3. Also Raging Bull, Million Dollar Baby, and Cinderrella Man. Boxing seems to lend itself well to drama. The Natural is a favorite. And The Legend of 'what's his name' Vance. I think Baggar. It's a golf flick. And Jerry Maguire. Someone metioned Rounders. If poker is a sport, then yeah, that one, too. Bang The Drum Slowly and Eight Men Out. Rudy. Probably quite a bit more, too. He's Got Game. Yeah, more then I can think of, probably. All those above are really good, IMO.

Ugh, I thought Remember The Titans was an atrocious movie.

And I thought Friday Night Lights (the movie) didn't spend enough time going into the difference between academics and football at Permian.

Ironically enough, Ron Shelton [who directed Bull Durham], played in the minor leagues for the Orioles in the 60's.

That makes it even more unacceptable...why would Nuke LaLoosh be a top prospect even though he throws like a girl and can't even reach the plate from the pitching rubber? Why would a team send a veteran catcher all the way down to single-A?

Yes! Those are the kind I forget. John Candy was great in that. And White Men Can't jump as well as The Air Up There. Or how about On The Waterfront and more recently Bend it Like Beckham? I like all of those.

For a good baseball movie, I'll stick to The Natural, FoD, or even The Sandlot. Hell, I'd take Major League over Bull Durham.

I didn't mind Miracle either. It had a little bit of Disney cheese in it, but overall it was a good movie.

My favorites would have to be He Got Game, Hoop Dreams, Hoosiers, and Field of Dreams...yeah, I suck at naming one particular favorite.

I'm still unsure as to whether Raging Bull counts as a sports movie, but if it is, that's up there too.

Rocky is my favorite. So what if all 5 of the movies are all pretty much the same, they all kick *** IMO. Field of Dreams is probably my 2nd favorite, but the book is much better. Friday Night Lights is great. So is Cinderella Man, and Coach Carter was very good as well. That covers recent ones. Then of course you have classics like Rudy and Hoosiers. Slap Shot, Caddyshack, and Bad News Bears are all hilarious, different sports movies.

Miracle - I thought Kurt Russell was excellent in it.

Slap Shot - of course

and I'm not sure if documentaries count but three I liked were Pumping Iron, a documentary about the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest. Choke - a documentary about Rickson Gracie at the 1995 Vale Tudo tournament in Japan, and The Smashing Machine a documentary about Pride fighting in Japan and Mark Kerr.

I think Slapshot was made around 74 or 75. It stars Paul Newman as Reg Dunlop, a helmetless grey haired center, captain, and head coach of the Charlestown (I think) Cheifs a third rate minor league hockey team.

The team is absolutely horrible and when Dunlop learns that the team is folding at the end of the season he basicly tries to light a fire under his players, including the teams newest additions the three memorable Hanson brothers.

Newman is hilarious in this movie as Dunlop instigates, lies, and constantly starts crap throughout the entire film.

Almost every line in that movie seemed cheesy. It seems like they could have taken out the dialogue and you would still understood it the same. Also, the Mighty Ducks movies were like Miracle before there was Miracle.

That's because it was actually real. Spike just had Denzel play Ray Allen while the cameras rolled. He might have told Allen to not go all-out, but other than that it was all unscripted.

That movie made me so annoyed of the Red Sox that I felt the compulsory need to blow up New England.

The sad thing is, that is not indicative of Red Sox fans at all.

The lead role is Jimmy freaking Fallon, who as admitted to never really being a big baseball fan--he said he grew up liking the Mets because he knew someone with good tickets, then he liked the Yankees because Lorne Michaels would take him to Yankees games, then he liked the Red Sox because of his role in the movie.

And he said he prepared for the role by "reading every Dan Shaughnessy book out there".

No one in Boston can stand Dan Shaughnessy.
