I don't own a keyboard, but I hope to soon one day. Being a big fan of the Doors I would like to get an organ like Ray Manzarek. But I don't have $3000 to be spending like that. So I saw some keyboards at Radioshack (I'm cheap like that).

On Manzarek's keyboard/organ, he has a Fender Rhodes Bass Keyboard and a Vox Continental. I saw a 32 (or was it a 48 key?) keyboard to be in place of the bass keyboard and a plain keyboard to replace the Vox. I'm not sure if the small keyboard has different sound modes or not, but if it does I'll use it for my left-hand (bass part) by hooking it up to one of my bass amps (if at all possibe, I play bass guitar if you've noticed) and use the larger one for (what else?). I guess I'll get a keyboard amp for that (if not two for both).

If you all are familiar with what I'm talking about, please, give me your thoughts, corrections, and hints on this. I've been hoping this will work.

Roland makes cheap Keyboard amps.
However if you are trying to re-create a Ray Manzarek like setup and sound I suggest you have enough chops to do so. Ray was well trained in strut piano and his left hand was always in sync with the beat while he solo'd with his right. Note that the doors also had a bassist on the recordings of "Light My Fire" and during the L.A. Women sessions. Anyways try going to a music store and fool around with the equipment and ask a salesman. (You can do that because nobody is ever in the keyboard section of a muisic store)

I had no idea that they had a bassist for "Light My Fire". I know that they used a bassist for the first nine songs on "Strange Days", and all the way from "Waiting For the Sun" to "L.A. Woman" to "Other Voices" and "Full Circle".

So will my idea work? I still have to learn to play a keyboard, and this idea is just to keep me going till I have enough chops to do it.

It resembles Manzareks, with the left and right hand, I suppose?

I saw Manzarek in concert in 1974, and my advice, if you want to be like him, is to drink beer after beer as you play, and leaves the cans on the organ.

Also, if you keep an eye out on your newspaper classifieds you might see a Hammond organ for anywhere from $100 to $400 (if you're willing to move it). I know Manzarek didn't use a Hammond organ, but you can get really similar sounds.

What I meant to say is don't buy all the equipment before you have the chops to really get enough use out of it. I'd go for a Hammond right now.

Fantastic advice.

Some keyboards can split the tones of the keys, so the right half of the keyboard can be organ or harpsichord or whatever, and the left can be a bass tone.

Actually I think he did sometimes...
