Try Audacity (http://audacity.sf.net). Check out the Official Audacity Help Thread. That has some good stuff on it for figuring things out.

Another good, freeware recording program is Kristal Audio Engine (http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/)

Additionally, there's good information about microphone styles and placement tips at http://www.dpamicrophones.com/

Adobe Audition is cool. It has some really nice features.

Not cool enough to pay for though. (You could probably find it under $100 now, but Audacity will work great...and there are tons of plug-ins for it too)

why would you use a wave editing tool as your primary recording software?
That's like saying "Use Wavelab", I mean, yeah you could, but you'd be better off with a program is more purpose oriented.

yo, cakewalk has some good entry level programs for recording.

if you want to go the way my friend did and download off of file sharing, go with sonar 4.

Does anyone else find these sorts of posts distasteful? Is it just me?

a bit, that said, I'll be the first to admit that I have gotten software from p2p networks, for the purpose of demoing it, if a legit demo wasn't available.
The ones I continue to use, I purchase, the one's I don't, I delete.

I certaintly disagree with it.

Unfortunately, young people simply cannot physically afford the kinds of software they "need" to progress in recording. Its unfortunate but in some ways it can be neccessary (software costing what it does)

I certaintly don't download any software for the hell of it. And i don't encourage it. but there is one illegitimate peice of audio software on my PC.
