Midi

I need help with some MIDI questions. If i buy a usb/midi converter cable and plug it into my usb port on my computer, can i plug it into a midi plugin on my preamp and record like that? Id record straight into my computer from the guitar and bass. Also i need some free music recording/editing programs that can record midi.

Note- Audacity doesnt record midi.
