im thinking about recording my band some time soon. olny thing is i dont know jack about recording, so i got some questions.
1. if you buy just a 4 track can you accually record guitars and bass with it? and if so would you need a mic as appose to just plugging strait into the for track?
2. at minimum, how many mics do u need for drums?
3. do u even need a multi track?

EDIT
**Oh yeah, we are not trying to get super qualty**

1. You could start by DIing everything, and once you proceed, buy mics.

2. I would suggest two overheads, a snare and a bass mic. 4. At minimum. That's if you have cheap dynamics - if you have a good condenser you can get away with just using one or two mics.

3. You could buy a mixer instead and record straight to stereo.
