i was reading a magazine and dave grohl said he was avoiding having a verse/chorus/verse sound (or something like that).
any way what does that meen?

it seems pretty self explanitory.
he doesnt want the song to feel as though its just playing a verse, then chorus, then verse then chorus then verse.
he wants some variety.
something like that

The standard song goes:
Intro
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Break
Chorus x2
A non-standard way of doing it is:
Chorus
Riff
Verse
Break
Verse
Chorus
Riff
Chorus
Break
Chorus
Just listen to any Blink 182 song or any commercialised crap and you'll get the standard set-up.

It's not necessarily "bad" it's just not good to have it the same set up for every single one of your songs.
It's more fun to mix things up.
My band has a few songs that go
Intro
Verse
Verse
Riff
Verse
The end.
It's just better to mix things up. Having the same set up for every song = bad.

yeah, in fact, don,t even think of a structure lol, do it randomly to make it something unique, one good trick is to never decide which part is a verse, a chorus etc.
a structure of mine was something like
solo
chorus
riff a
verse
riff b
chorus
riff c
verse
riff b
bridge
solo
chorus
slow acoustic bit
outro

my band always argues about which part is the chorus and which is the verse. It's really confusing for us cuz we don't base the parts around the lyrics. :thumb:

He means he wants to be different and avoid the radio / commercial way of writing songs
Usually most radio / pop songs are
Intro
Verse
Chorus
Verse
Chorus
Middle
Chorus
He probably wants to mix it up a bit
E.g
Verse
Bridge
Verse
Chorus
Solo
Riff A
Verse
Riff A
Riff B
(Yeah that's a rubbish idea but it's just an example)

Verse chorus verse in musical form is known as ABA, and basically He wants it to go something like
A, B, C, A, C, B.
Or something, with A indicating a verse, B for a chorus and C for a bridge, there are loadsa different types of form. :thumb: Hope i've helped.
