duudeeeee jesus camp is so good! probably one of my favorite documentaries, mainly because i love seeing how crazy evangelicals are and i'm not a fan of religion.
Has anyone seen the movie Waking Life? i rented it because my friend said it was sweet and it had good reviews, but the animation over real footage looked so crappy. I couldn't handle watching the screen for more than 20 minutes, now i can appreciate the effort that goes into movies with animation over live action, but it can be pretty hard to watch.
Sin city wasn't all that bad when it came to weird animation over it though. i think they used some computers maybe.

7.75/10

The first 18 minutes was a little slow. Things really picked up once the setting changed to Ancient China. Some nice choreography in the fight scenes. The Restaurant Brawl looked to be an especially hard choreograph, considering the kid had to pretend that he didn't go through months of training before filming started to look like he didn't know martial arts. The J vs. J fight was pretty nice to see.

So good.

The cinematography is really something else, considering it was made in 1978 and eclipses just about any modern film I can name it's truly remarkable. Whilst some seem to think it ends there, I couldn't disagree more. It felt sincere as a great little story, but this was besides the point to me as the true strength seemed to be the way it captured the time period in an eerily profound manner.

It was slow, but I never felt it dragged. It was just lingering in beauty. Terence Malick may well be some kind of genius if this film is anything to go by, i'm hanging out to see Badlands.

Elevator Movie

No budget independent film about a perverted guy and an ex-nymphomaniac christian woman who get stuck in a lift together, nobody comes to rescue them and the weeks pass by. It kind of sucks and is an obvious homage to surrealism but these elements are more camp then anything, the film consists almost entirely of dialogue which is it's obvious strength but almost all of it is about sex which seems pretty cheap. The last 20 minutes or so is one of the dumbest sequences i've ever seen.

Dark City

Really weird sci-fi movie. Takes a little while to get what's going on (would have taken longer without the voiceovers) but it keeps you intrigued in a wtf sort of way and so I was engaged the entire time. Final battle scene was a little cheesy (as they frequently are) but the plotline was interesting, though the lack of a twist at the end was a little disappointing, as these sorts of movies tend to have them. 8/10

The Refrigerator

http://i35.tinypic.com/1nzonn.jpg

Much more entertaining then it probably had any right to be, a couple of newlyweds move into a new apartment with... you guessed it, a killer refrigerator. The wife seems to have some issues with some incident involving her mother and a knife in the past, whilst the husband is increasingly seduced by the refrigerator into insanity. Neither plot angles are resolved or explained, but most funny of all is moustached plumber Juan who is dressed in chains and leather (even doing an exotic dance at one point), something of a hero though there is no climax for him to have done anything heroic, and the whole racial stereotyping of the latino community living around the slum block of flats who are in constant contention with the husband who is typical 80's white go getter ego. This film has depth!

There is absolutely no explanation to the motives of the refrigerator as far as I could tell, and the imposing, nightmarish focus on it is extremely campy. It's a fun watch, but it is a truly abysmal movie.

You're not supposed to rank them on a scale of how perfect they are, because then there would be no point if nothing could reach 10. It's a relative score to other movies or media or whatever. So if he thinks it's better than every other movie it should be 10/10.

It's just beautiful. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright are an amazing combination. Nick Frost especially is a great character actor. The names, sound effects, build up, and references are done very nicely.

The special feature, on the Shaun of the Dead DVD as well, where they showcase a few scenes edited for television is hilarious. Hearing the things they say that embrace the already ridiculous sounding dubbing to take it over the edge are genius. My favorite is "peas and rice" in place of "Jesus Christ."

Terrence Malick's first, a road movie with a young Martin Sheen in a superb role as an outlaw on the run with his underage girlfriend played by Sissy Spacek. The story is engaging throughout and has a sense of spanning a lot of country, with excellent cinematography and soundtrack this film is pretty damn good.

Also this piece of music kept playing throughout I could not identify for the life of me but I knew was from another film, Gassenhauer from Carl Orff's Schulwerk according to wikipedia. It was also used in True Romance.

In sequential order.

Married Life

7/10

Set in the late 40's in a film noir style. Excellent performance by Chris Cooper. Somewhat unexpected, although some expectations were called if you can guage how the film was moving and anticipating circumstances. The message of the movie was profound. There's a definite resonance with the married couples of this town, cheating on their other half without the knowledge of their partner, and continuing as if nothing has happened.

Bucket List

7/10

Definitely a schmaltzy movie with the requisite laughs at the requisite moments. Still entertaining nonetheless.

Street Kings (SPOILERS)

6.5/10

Somewhat convoluted storytelling. The character of Diskant's fiancee wasn't exactly touched on screen, only in a passing comment. The empathic connection of his death would've been far greater had there been some screen time with his fiancee, which we don't even see at all. Once you see Santos and DeMille apprehend Ludlow you can sort of tell that Biggs was in it only to capture Captain Wander.

Main highlight for me was that for the first quarter/third of the film, I was captivated. Material felt different in some way.

Feels like an amateur took the Coen Bros. formula for stupid characters and silly hairstyles with a plot revolving around nothing and tried to make a film. Lazily written/edited/etc. The cast was great, especially Pitt but it really was just mailed in by the Bros.

now I hate, absolutely HATE the "western" genre, however I love the visuals, the idea of near lawlessness, and the mythos they hold.

This was great because it avoided the horrid cliches (minus the bit where Ben pushes open the swinging doors, I don't think I've seen a single western that DIDN'T have that) and had some awesome acting (I particularly liked Ben Foster) and a cool story.

I'm in a mood for good western type films so reccomendations would be nice.

I finally got around to watching Rent last night. I don't know. At first I loved it, but after thinking about it and reading a scathing review I'm not as sure.

First off: the music. It is a musical after all. The music is fantastic. The songs are really great. On top of that, a few of the vocal performances are just amazing.

I just wasn't sure about the story. For one thing, I couldn't really connect with the characters. I found them to be a little obnoxious, and I think I was supposed to really like them. I mean, I liked Mark a lot, but the idea that, *gasp*, making money filming for the news is "selling out' just pissed me off. "Vie Boheme" is awesome in terms of the music, but the lyrics confused me. Was I actually supposed to think it was cool that these characters were dropping names like Maya Angelou? Because they sounded like obnoxious indie kids who are always sure to tell you how edgy and sophisticated their taste is.

That was my main issue with the film. Other than that, I just felt like the topics of AIDS and homosexuality weren't approached in a particularly interesting way.

I just don't know about this one yet. The music is great, and I really enjoyed it, but when you start to think about it it's really not a very good film besides the music.

P.S. Seeing people from Grindhouse in this movie was just weird.

Joe

I personally loved Rent, but I loved the story and the music so it was easy for me. I thought the cinematography was wonderful and the acting was fantastic. They're supposed to be obnoxious indie kids to an extent.

Did you know the story beforehand? I've seen it a few times before I saw the movie. The only thing I really didn't like is that they had Seasons of Love first, totally out of place from the story and only in there early because it's the popular song of the show.

Once Upon A Time In America: Funny this should be brought up just before I post my review. Actually watched this over a week ago but haven't been on here since then. Yes, it is very long, though not quite 1900 long, but it doesn't particularly drag, rather has a sedate pace that feels very appropriate IMO. De Niro does not disappoint as Noodles, an ex-gangster returning home after a long exile following his brothers-in-crime were slaughtered in a shoot-out with the cops, following the end of Prohibition. The story traces with a strong sense of nostalgia the gang's childhood friendship and rise to wealth and influence. But questions remain unanswered in the present day. - 9/10

Talk Radio: Based on the true story of a Jewish 'shock jock' assassinated by neo-nazis, this Oliver Stone film is mainly powered by an electric, frantic performance by Eric Bogossian (who incidentally wrote play upon which the film is derived), who satirises and mocks his callers without mercy. Unfortunately, some of those telephoning don't get the joke. - 8.5/10

Taste The Blood of Dracula: Christopher Lee, cleavage, viscous blood and wonderfully over-dramatic '60s British acting. - Hammer Goodness/10

All I knew about the story beforehand was that it has broke gay Bohemians with AIDS.

I'm just being hard on it, I guess. I'm just not sure about the characters. That's what has really been lingering. Screw "la vie Boheme," get a job.

It's still one of the better horror movies this side of the millennium with more atmosphere and scares than most recent ones combined. It's a genuinely good story, too.

This is my own pet-peeve, but it pisses me off every time someone complains that they figure out what's going to happen. If it's a good movie, there'll be clues that foreshadow it, or, perhaps more often now, people have wised up to filmmaking and can see that what's usually "the" worst thing that could happen to the protagonist will happen by the end. Everything builds on itself in a movie world, otherwise you're left with moments like Saw, revealing pivotal exposition in a one minute montage that becomes convoluted.

Not to knock "surprise" endings, but movies often put the audience in a position of power knowing many things the characters do not. It feels stupid to me to then take this cheat sheet given us by the filmmakers and scoff at the movie because we know what's going to happen. All that aside, I'd still prefer this over "WTF?" moments, and confusion. Of course, this isn't an excuse for revealing too much information too soon. There are mistakes for any method.

And, this is not directed at IAmInsect, but something that's been bubbling for a while in me. :smoke:

I like it way more than I probably should. I fully recognize the over-written dialogue, and I'm more than aware of the repetitious pathetic fallacy of Cusack walking around emotionally overwhelmed in the rain. But in both cases, you have to assume it's intentional; if it weren't why would there be such shoved-in nods to topics as inane as the characters Top 5 side 1, track 1s, or why would Cusack be caught in the rain so many times? I guess it's the self-awareness that gets me. That and the fact that I can seemingly relate to it in a sort of projected future sort of way. That and I just like the movie.

Thought it was a very typical stoner/buddy film, still entertaining nonetheless. Loved the Godspeed You! Black Emperor reference though.

i think some people in this forum must have a massive stick up their *** or something because i heard some of the "pro" film critics in here give this movie a terrible review but i found it really enjoyable

it's no scorsese but personally i don't expect something that makes me cum in my drawers every time i sit down to watch a movie this was really cool

i loved the beginning when wahlberg took out the chopper with the .50 cal and i cringed when he blew that ****er's arm off from like 2,000 yards away

awesome movie

Very unusual movie, from the opening introduction scene of an abattoir at work you get a sense of something being a little... off. These scenes of industry are rather humbling, the rest of the film is very redneck america in image with Lee Marvin's character offsetting this as a city hitman hired to debt collect from slaughterhouse operator Gene Hackman who is not just selling meat.

There are some unsettling themes here sandwiched in between some action sequences where Marvin acts cool and collected with some serious hardware. The film is very strangely balanced and it's awfully difficult to describe, but it has a unique effect.

no, it's one of the worst films i've ever seen. one of those movies that rams a chair leg into your neck, sits on it, shouts 'JUSTICE' sporadically and eats corn dogs so the dislodged crumbs fall onto your face.

he just kills everyone. It's like playing metal slug, except with a grotesque injection of sexual tension and an obliviously poor premise.

yeh but watching it for an hour and a half with the faux-nazis, the zombies, the aliens, the alien zombies and the alien zombie faux-nazis removed, the vehicles strictly derived from the 'realistic' category (herds of black fbi cars and helicopters, as opposed to infinitely manoeuvrable submarines and dual minigun-equipped camels) and no one saying 'yer greaaaaaat!' when the protagonist owns the crap out of a mission? nah.

didnt the wall-e screener have mega-obnoxious property tags? like, instead of just a notice every once and a while, it had one at the bottom and the top throughout the entire movie?

i mean i downloaded transsiberian (which i've yet to watch) and it had a full screen property tag thingy but it only shows up like three times i think. but a constant little ticker is damn annoying, almost like a workprint

I've downloaded Wall E, the dvd screener with the tags.

Turns out someone's cropped the screen to take the tags out. I just gotta hope that nothing interesting happens at the top or bottom.

Cocaine

Yeah, there's one that's cropped but that seems like it'd end up at a really awkward ratio. There's also one where someone inexplicably blurred the watermarks with a purple hue. At this point, I'll just wait for
