Agreed. That's what I like about Miyazaki films, is that no matter how many times you watch it, it's still very entertaining.

And I've always liked magical fantasy more than others, and Howl's Moving Castle is one of his films I like more.

Just watched Live Free or Die Hard. It was quite possibly the most unrealistic movie I've ever seen. Like, I know its an action movie and its just supposed to be over the top and entertaining, but not one part of this movie was based on anything that could remotely happen. They make it seem like hackers could remotely operate my microwave oven if they wanted to.

Casino is fantastic but so is Goodfellas. The relationship between Stone and De Niro was perfectly played out and Pesci is at his peak as his psychodwarf stereotype.

I didn't like Hard Candy.

Too much talking, too much jerky camera, ridiculous angle on the pedophile thing, irritating dialogue, I really did not see the big deal with this. Call if a slow burning thriller and i'll call it a badly written and excruciatingly difficult to sit through film.

What? It was very intentionally a dialog-driven movie. That's like saying Shoot 'Em Up had too much shooting.

What? It was very intentionally a dialog-driven movie. That's like saying Shoot 'Em Up had too much shooting.

spoilers

It could of done with less OMG you're an evil monster because you go for jailbait girls, I found this angle really irritating where he's tied up to the chair and shes going nuts. Sure he killed her friend or whatever but it went on far too long. It could of been tense but I found it very poorly written.

"I don't like Goldfrapp, I just said I did, i calculated the time you took for a response and it was JUST ENOUGH to check out reviews on amazon.com" or whatever she said which was similar, I just found shi' like this really lame. Where he's gone to all the effort to burn underage pr0n and store it in a safe and she checks his download manager to find some activity makes me groan, I think its an insult to anyone who can even partially use a computer.

Now I don't think it was all terrible, there is a scene where she's bout to cut his nuts off and he relays an experience from his childhood that I found compelling and effective. The action at the end wasn't so bad either, though I found the jerky camera work a really cheap way to make it try and seem more tense but I see that in a lot of movies.

In short I think the idea had potential but the script was really weak, the only way it scraped by is because the acting was credible to a degree and a bunch of horny 15+ guys who get off thinking about some jailbait going nuts on some pedo is a really good idea for a film.

/end rant

Akira
01-21-2008, 08:00 AM
Well Ellen Page's character is obviously pretty psychotic. It's not as though the message of the film is that pedophiles are evil. That angle was just part of her character. If she didn't think that, how would the movie have made sense?
And your last insult about 15 year olds doesn't even make sense.

Meatplow
01-21-2008, 08:22 AM
It went to extravagant lengths to show she was psychotic, and maybe it was trying to create an ambiguity where you don't know which character to sympathize with but ultimately I didn't give a **** about either of them because the dialogue was ridiculous and drawn out far too much.

By that last comment I meant anyone over the age of 15 probably went to see it because of the mere premise of shock value in its theme, I know I did. For some, this shock value and the fact the film has a few inspired moments will be enough to rate this film highly, unjustified or not.

Just watched Memento.

I though it was abit plop until about 15 minutes after when i thought about it properly.
It made me feel strangely uncomfortable for the first 20 minutes for some reason, what with not really having a grasp at what was going on.
I thought the two narratives worked really well, and when they merged together it felt 'right' as opposed to a shoddy idea bieng forced onto you by the director.
I could connect with the Lenny really well, which is odd when you think that he doesnt really have many conscious personal traits to latch onto due to his illness.

All in all i thought i was a really good film that was pulled off brilliantly, and the ending was awesome. You think you know how it ends, with it bieng in reverse, but it still manages to catch you out!

Sweet.

It's about 1/10 as funny the second time.

It's less funny, but I wouldn't go that far.

I just watched Smokin' Aces. I didn't really "get" the movie, so to speak. I mean it was too contrived and ridiculous and funny to be a serious action movie, but it was too dark and took itself too seriously to be a parody like Shoot 'Em Up. I felt it walked a fine line through the whole movie, and it didn't work for me.
Plus seeing the guy who plays Ari on Entourage playing someone besides Ari is weird.

I can't justify more than 2-2.5/5, because the attempts to be serious just failed. The movie should have cut the drama and gone the route of Shoot 'Em Up. If it had, they could have had a really good thing going.

The King of Kong

Documentary about an unknown challenger taking on the world record in Donkey Kong.

This was quite interesting. Everyone took pride in what they were doing to the point where there was this sort of Evil Empire working against this outsider challenger (except the filmmaker). The champeen had his little lackey on scene to watch the newcomer, and he himself is a judge in accepting world records, which would incidentally be breaking his. It's just very interesting to see how seriously they take arcade gaming, and the rules for accepting scores. There's just this way of thinking that makes sense, but to the extent it's played out is just ridiculous.

tbh I thought it was kind of disappointing. I love everything David Wain touches. Wet Hot American Summer was one of the funniest movies I've seen, Stella is one of my favorite shows, The State was awesome. But The Ten suffers from the amount of stuff going on in such a short amount of time.

10 stories with a mini-story going throughout squeezed into an hour and a half just leaves you wanting more out of each.

It's still worth watching, there's some real good stuff in there, but it still lacks a bit.

ITs funny to see Clive Owen taking care of a baby again; the only other movie i saw which he was in it was shoot em' up.
Anyway the movie was great , touching and has a great soundtrack.

Sleepy Hollow

For some reason my friends really wanted to watch this tonight, and ended up driving 30 minutes into the city to go rent it, and pick me up from work when I finished so I could go watch it with them.

Was ridiculous, which I suppose is better than it being boring. And atleast it was a group of friends where we can all make fun of the movie together and nobody's telling us to shut up.

3/10 as a serious movie

6/10 for a joke movie

Seeing Cloverfield tomorrow.

It was between that and Meet The Spartans, and MTS looks lame tbh.

I'm not too excited about Cloverfield, but I'd rather see it in theaters than wait to see it on dvd.

Lol you think?

CoM was decent to slightly above average. I guess that's classic by today's standards but I don't get some of the amazing praise it gets.

Oh, yes, I obviously don't have a firm enough grasp to distinguish between "slightly above average" and a "true classic."

But by today's standards those are the same thing!

Cloverfield:
8/10

Acting wasn't that good, but that wasn't really the point.
Hardly any worthwhile stortyline, but again, not the point either.
The camerawork was refreshing for a thriller/scifi movie.

Rashômon - 3/5

Not Kurosawa's best or anything, but I can see why this was groundbreaking when it was released.

Rendition - 3/5

This film had potential, despite having Reese Witherspoon. Also, this wasn't Jake Gyllenhaal's greatest moment. He pretty much just goes around in a daze the whole time.

I saw Road to Perdition in theaters in 2002 when it came out. I was 13, and I haven't seen it since. I probably should give it a second look.

8/10 for the pure enjoyment of seeing people ripped to shreds by bullets.

Session 9

5/10

Eh...mehh..ehhhhh. It was okay, for a made-for-TV movie. At least, I'm guessing it was a made-for-TV movie. The only creepy part is where what'shisface is walking back to that treasure trove and he sees a silhouette of a guy in the tunnels and freaks out.

Superbad

6/10

I know this movie was funny. But it centered around alcohol, which I've had a bad experience when I was growing up, so I didn't find it all too exciting or easily justifiable.

Extremely visual movie, i think they play it as a gimmick but its a damn good movie, the story isnt the most in depth story but the visuals carry most of the film, but i would reccomend it to anyone who hasnt seen it yet.

You have to take into account the context of the film. You're just desensitized from today's gorefest movies that replace suspense with gratuitous violence.

Yeah, I suppose you're right.

Seen a few movies at my friend's place yesterday and today:

Dolemite (1975) - An insanely bad blaxploitation film and yet somehow very entertaining. Starring Rudy Ray Moore as Dolemite, a pimp who has recently been released from jail on the condition that he catches the rival pimp that set him up in the first place.
The production is terrible, there are visible boom mics in a lot of scenes, the fight sequences are poor but somehow it seems to hold your attention the whole way through. 7/10

Pulse (2006) - From IMDB: "The hacker Josh invades the computer of Douglas Ziegler, who is developing a powerful wireless signal and accidentally releases a mysterious force that take the will to live of the human beings, generating a suicide epidemic and increasing the force. His girlfriend and student of psychology Mattie sees each one of their common friends die and the destruction of the modern world, and together with her new acquaintance Dexter, they try to plan a virus developed by Josh in the network to shutdown the system and save mankind."

The plot is terrible, the acting is terrible but the cinematography and production is for some reason, unbelieveably good. A worthwhile watch. 8/10

Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) - This is the latest installment in the Godzilla franchise. From IMDB: "Evil Space Aliens called the Xilians unleashes all the Earth's monsters to lay waste to most of the world's major cities, including Tokyo, New York, Sydney, Shanghai and Paris. It is up to Godzilla and the Earth Defense Force to vanquish the monsters and aliens to rescue the world in the ultimate "Save the Earth" battle."

The acting is the worst I've seen in a while, but it's so funny it keeps you glued to your seat. 9/10
