It usually strays away from being classic for me because of how it handles its subplots, but its dream sequences are some of my favorite put to film, not only because they're imaginative but how realistic it feels. He has a way of showing us love without being heavy handed about it, mixing humor (the masturbation scene and the memories as a child) with sentimentality without being schmaltzy. Everything else plays second fiddle to this, including the scenes involving Dunst even if they serve a grander purpose, and it sorts of takes away from the better parts of the film, but it's all wrapped up in the best possible ending for the film.
Also, Carrey is at his best and Winslet plays charmingly annoying well.
Carrey's performance is great, but to me it handled grave subject matter in a very light-hearted way.

I really can't find a single complaint about it. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey were fantastic together, the plot was great, the screenwriting and directing both did a great job, it was funny and clever, and best of all it just captures love beautifully. I'm in awe everytime I see it and I'm always finding something new I didn't see before. I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

Carrey's performance is great, but to me it handled grave subject matter in a very light-hearted way.
He handled it like a wounded lover; it wasn't his performance but his character that handled a very grave subject matter in a very light-hearted way. It's just who he was.
Well that's what I mean...the film in general underplayed the truly horrifying notions of its concept, and I hated the Dunst subplots, like you mentioned they were just distractions in the end.
As for capturing love, I've never been in love so maybe there's something I'm missing there. Although generally I can be moved by a great depiction of love in a movie; to me that connection wasn't there in Eternal Sunshine.
I empathized for Carrey's character but only because of Carrey's fantastic performance. The script was weak.

I think that was the point. It was a black comedy and nobody realized it. Only Dunst, at the end after having realized that erasing her memory didn't work and love can't just be sweeped away by forgetting the memories that came of it, realized the gravity of the situation. That's why the doctor is cast in a slightly mad light, because he looks at it like it's nothing at all. I don't think the director intended for the film to look at it light-heartedly, just those stupid enough to believe in the system.
Zardoz
Post-apocalyptic film from 1974. This film's got everything: Sean Connery in a red latex diaper, a gigantic stone head that's spitting weapons and a full lecture about erection. Behind all of this, however, there are serious matters lurking. A strange satire over mankind and it's desire to conquer and dominate others.

One of the few recent "horror" movies I enjoy. I love the whole idea of survival and how they go about it. Pretty interesting how they start out fighting the infected and end up fighting healthy humans. Sort of fits into the "man killing man" theme.
The camera work and soundtrack are just incredible. I think my favorite scene is shortly after Jim gets out of the hospital, and he's crossing Westminster Bridge, with Big Ben and parliament in the background, and the city is just completely deserted.

It's true. It's the stone head (the "god" Zardoz) who says it to indoctrinate his followers to kill other humans. It goes:
Zardoz: The gun is good.
Exterminators: The gun is good.
Zardoz: The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life, and poisons the earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the gun shoots death, and purifies the earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth and kill!

The Dead Zone - based on the Stephen King novel and directed by Cronenberg, very slightly spoilt by previously seeing the Simpsons Horror Halloween spoof but a good film, though not Cronenberg's best by far. The script was also slightly flat I felt. Christopher Walken plays a teacher who awakes from a coma after 5 years with psychic powers. At first seeing it as a curse, he then allows himself to be used in order to identify a serial killer. Meanwhile a local politician, Martin Sheen's sinister Greg Stillson, amasses an increasingly popular third party campaign aiming to make him a Maine senator... 7.5/10

The film has quirks and brings dreams to life, but the relationship between the two is never exactly strengthened past a rudimentary level, not to mention the man is ****ing crazy and should probably seek professional help. I'm trying to figure out a way to explain it and I just dont think I can. It wasn't about the dreams or the quirks really, it was about the bond between them.
He's the type of person that's always rejected, probably because he's pretty strange, and she's the type of person that is scared of getting hurt. She has no trouble partying with a guy she has no intention of seeing again, but when it comes to someone she could really fall for, she freezes. She liked him until she discovered he didn't want Zoe. She was scared to commit and that made him loony. He didn't understand why she would "play" with him, when really she just didn't know how to open her heart up and love him, despite wanting to.
Imagine having a best friend that you're sexually attracted to, and MAYBE having her sexually attracted to you, but she refuses to date you. Your friends tell you it's not how you think it is, she gives you no straight answer. You're forced to be around her all the time. It's really impossible to deal with something like that and it's impossible to face it until you know for certain that it won't happen. Teetering on the edge like that can wreck your mind...it can invade your dreams..and it can make you pretty freaking crazy.

There's a difference between what you're explaining, which is a normal reaction, and the borderline psychotic nature of how he is. There is no reason someone would become the messed up in the head just because some girl is teasing with him unless he was already very, very unstable to begin with, in which case, the film looks at his behavior way too lightly. He was like that before he met her, so she's just affecting what he hallucinates about. There wasn't really a bond; there was a simple misunderstanding and pressuring to like or love the other without reason. I don't doubt that there are people like that, but the film tries to pass it off like legitimate chemistry when it's obvious it thinks something else.

that explanation is only a small part of the actual movie. sure, you could chalk up the entire movie as the relationship between the main character and his love interest
but the way you explain the movie, it sounds like a chick movie, through and through.
Obviously, I've seen it (actually copied the DVD too) and would probably watch it another half-dozen times

guys im not trying to say that was a normal reaction. His mother said he always had trouble telling his dreams from reality but I don't think they were hallucinations as in this is literally what he saw.
Obviously there's a naivety to it, like when she catches him in her apartment, but that's part of the attraction.

Phantom of the Paradise: Brian De Palma's 70s glam rock musical adaptation of Faust and Phantom of the Opera. Winslow Leach, a composer and singer, has his music, a sonata based on Faust, stolen by sinister record producer Swan, who wants to use the music for the opening of his club, the Paradise. He has Winslow framed for drug addiction, resulting in his being sent to Sing Sing, were his teeth are pulled out and replaced with metal. Winslow escapes and attempts to destroy Swan's record factory but is horribly deformed when his head is trapped in a record presser. Masking his disfigurment, Winslow terrorises the Paradise, leading to Swan agreeing to produce his sonata in the style originally desired, on condition that he signs a contract in blood. Winslow wants his sonata to be sung by his love interest Phoenix but Swan has other plans...
Despite being somewhat outdated, actually very enjoyable with a decent soundtrack. 8/10

Caught up on a few films i've been meaning to see recently
The Science of Sleep - It was alright, nothing too spectacular. The acting was good and it was a lot funnier than I was expecting but after all i'd heard about it, I was expecting more. It was such a blatant Gondry film in the sense that it was just like watching an extended Bjork music video from 1994 - I mean, the dream sequences were good but the whole thing struck me as the work of a director with limited ideas. I'm pretty gay for Gael Garcia Bernal though so that bumps it up a bit. 7
Green Street Hooligans - Not bad. Elijah Wood still manages to annoy me in almost every role he plays and the whole film just feels a bit corny but it did keep my attention. Oh, and the last thirty minutes are completely melodramatic and OTT which seemed a bit silly for a film about football hooligans. As far as the subject matter goes, I probably prefer The Football Factory even if it is probably a worse film. 6
The Departed - Good film. DiCaprio was brilliant in it and you can't help but love everything Jack Nicholson does. Matt Damon I thought was pretty crap but not bad enough to ruin the film. I haven't seen the original so I don't know how it compares but I thought it was well paced except for the ending where everything just seemed to happen. What was in the envelope that DiCaprio gave to the psychiatrist anyway? I missed that. I only just finished watching it so I haven't really thought it over, but it was solid. Not the so called return to form that people were saying though - The Aviator and Gangs of New York were both better. 7

Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
I was half-surprised at how much I liked this. I mean, I like Paul Thomas Anderson, and I like Emily Watson and Philip Seymour Hoffman is always great, but I was a little wary of how Adam Sandler could pull off a :serious: performance.
He did an amazing job. You see his problems and you feel for him, you want him to be ok and have a good life and a good relationship, and there's a happy ending and I turned off the TV feeling really good. Makes me wish I could have a relationship like that, haha.
5/5, highly recommended. Just a nice low-key romance movie.

Honestly, those characters were flat enough to give the guys from Hostel a run for their money. It wasn't so much a cloning machine as one that duplicated the person in their entirety, including their personality.
And yes, the film did show it both with the cat and hat scene and the prestige materials at the end.

Buck: I'm your Dad's brother alright.
Miles: You have much more hair in your nose than my Dad.
Buck: How nice of you to notice.
Miles: I'm a kid - that's my job.
Hehe, funny stuff. Another classic moment:

This movie's been pretty hyped up and in this post wes anderson world of film where this sort of deprived character story is commonplace, M&Y&EWK seems unique, but it's hard to hold on to for some reason. I picked up a theme on human contact (in fact one of the main characters stated this in a way), but I still feel that it's a very abstract story for the sake of story, which isn't entirely a bad thing. All in all it feels very contemporary and if you're into this sort of film (think Royal Tennenbaums, The Science of Sleep, Sideways, etc) you'll probably think this a solid 7/10.

I usually hate or kinda like these sort of films, but this film was excellent. Maybe it's the fact that Drew Barrymore can make any film at least tolerable or that the characters weren't complete idiots that made every problem last days on end or that the dialogue actually seemed smooth and real, but this film just seemed to work. Completely predictable, but otherwise a nice little crowd pleaser.

Not sure I see what all the fuss is about to be honest. The uprising scenes were really good, and the camerawork thoughout was excellent but the plot was boring and took too long to really go anywhere. Eh, it was alright, it did look great. 7
Clerks
Another disappointment, although not really because I don't particularly like Kevin Smith films. Dante was annoying but that was the actor more than anything so I guess it's forgiveable seeing as how the film was pretty low budget. Jay and Silent Bob are retarded characters though. 3/10, this is probly the worst movie ive ever seen in my life. the budget for this couldnt have been much more then 25$, its just pathetic, but its so terrible and horribly made that its actually hilarious, hence the 3 instead of 0. the boom mic is in a million shots, half the stuff is made from paper mache (i cant spell), and the narrator is the most obnoxious person ive ever seen in a movie. and it also has nothing to do with bingo at all, weird

He does say why he didn't give it a 0. I would probably rate some of the worst movies I've seen about 1/1.5 as nearly all of them have a redeeming factor (besides Date movie, that was just horrible and notworthy of anything)

Last Night
It's the end of the world and everyone knows it; covers various lives and how they spend their last hours.
The movie's ok. Doesn't address why the world is ending (looked like the Sun expanding) but it didn't really matter as that wasn't the point. However, for its characters, it skims over their motivations for resorting to barbarism or sticking to civility with reasons that aren't explored much and leave the film feeling hollow.

Flight Plan 4/10
what a peice of garbage this movie is. Jodi Foster was just annoying as hell "help me find my daughter" "I need to find my daughter!!" every 5 seconds after the first 20 minutes. The plot wasnt that bad, it could have been much better then it was.
Versus 7/10
Good movie. the crazy plot and nonstop awesome action makes it instantly likeable. although, the plot was rather hollow after the main concept of the movie was out there. no character names or anything, just 2 escaped prisoners and like 5 yakuza in a forest infested with zombie samurai trying to kill them. A good, but not great movie.
Akira
07-26-2007, 05:59 AM
Man. Flight Plan was awful. The plot had some potential, and parts seems interesting in the beginning, but then what ended up happing was just so cliche and boring.
And if I remember correctly, they explained what was happening way too early.

The Twilight Zone was so awesome. Until they ditched Sterling and put it in color.
Some of them really are freaky.
Even some of the later episodes of the original Twilight Zone when Sterling was still there started to get lame. All the good episodes put the fear factor into what you don't see--some sort of mystery or the unknown causing problems whereas a lot of the later episodes starting getting so sensationalist. It seems like almost every one was an alien invasion with bad costumes at some point.
Regardless, one of the best shows ever made.

Yeah, I agree. What made the good episodes so good was the mystery of it.
The black and white really adds a weird feel to it. I don't think that even the good episodes would have been quite as powerful in color.
I loved the show when I was younger, I never get the chance to watch it anymore.

teeheehee - i've been busy these past week or so huge post ahead
aight let's get started:
Wild at Heart I didn't finish it all (curses) but what I've seen I've loved.
City of God Finally saw this and I really enjoyed it. A solid 4/5 or even 4.5/5
Ran This was my first Kurosawa film and I loved the hell out of it. 5/5
(forgive my lacking of descriptions it's been some weeks since i've seen these)
Cavite Very interesting low budg - I quite liked it and even was able to overlook some of it's shortcomings and thin plot points. 4/5
Insomnia My first time seeing this and except for the ending which was totally predictable fromthe beginning was a real joy to watch. The more Nolan I see the more I like. 4/5
Solaris Finally. I finally watched the whole thing in one viewing. Incredible. Easily my number two in all time. 5/5
Throne of Blood Early Kurosawa on VHS. Macbeth but with Samurai. I loved every minute of it. 5/5
1408 ehh, it could've been so much better, not that it was too bad or anything but it left me wanting a lot more. 3/5
Pride Black swim team overcomes racism and adversity to win. omg 2/5
Tetsuo: The Iron Man When my friend told me about this I got giddy with excitement. I wanted to love it, and I did love the first half or so. And then the other Iron monster guy thing came into the story and it turned into a lame power rangers esque fight movie. meh. First half 4.5/5 second half 2.5/5 overall : 3.5/5
Harakiri I didn't finish all of it but what an incredibly tense and taut film. Very interesting - look forward to finishing. :)
Dr. Doolittle meh, eddie murphy talking dogs and things. enjoyable for what it's worth (not much tbh) 2/5
You've Got Mail omg what a shitfest. first offense - dave chapelle playing the stereotypical black guy. wtf. second offense - tom hanks not having any discernable testicles or man junk of any kind. third offense - meg ryan is ugly and smiles too much. struck out. 1/5 because i like happy endings and it made me almost cry omg
Cast Away I kind of wanted to see some better tom hanks and this was laying around (nevermind Forest Gump - I've got it memorized line for line. srsly) I like this one. 3.5/5
Purple Rain Prince is the man. 'nuff said. 4/5
Mulholland Dr One of my favorite movies ever. Brilliant. 5/5
Blade Runner Very nice. Very nice indeed. I watched the Directors Cut so there were somethings that made me go hmmmm. 4/5
I think that's it. I'm sure there's more but I didn't write down the names of those others.

Catch Me If You Can
Such an underrated Spielberg film, no-one ever really seems to talk about it. Solid cast, good story and one of my favourite opening credit sequences. I much prefer it to a lot of Spielberg's more recent films, except probably Munich. 7
Brick
Film noir set in a high school. It's an interesting idea for a film that sort of works but also feels a bit awkward and silly at points. It draws you in but then you get a scene like at the Pin's house with his mother making them breakfast or Brenden in the "VP's" office where it's hard to take any of it seriously. It's well done but I think it could have been better without scenes emphasising that this is high school kids you're watching. 6.5
Der Übermensch
07-26-2007, 03:59 PM
A lot of the lines in Brick were verbatim lifted from 40's gangster flicks. I agree that made it kind of out of place, but I love Film Noir a lot, so the little homages sprinkled in really were a + for me

Dancer in the Dark: Lars Von Trier film starring Bjork as a Czech immigrant in 60s USA going blind due to a hereditory disease who is trying to save money for an operation to save her son's sight, finding escape through fantasizing that she is a musical star. Use of 'amateur' handheld filming, somewhat questionable acting ability of Bjork, self-indulgence of musical fantasies and downward spiral into an utterly bleak ending make this a somewhat difficult film to watch and it's understandable why it got a very mixed reaction when it was released. However overall I enjoyed it. 7/10
Fresh: centres around 12 year old Michael (or 'Fresh'), a drug runner for various gangs in the projects of New York, in his attempt to escape from a life of poverty and brutality by playing off the gangs against each other, guided by his alcoholic father, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who is a master at speed chess. A good film once you get past the ebonics. 7.5/10

It was packed full of cliches around every turn, total medicoracy. they could have done more with the plot, in some parts i thought it was going to pick up but i was let down, a redeeming thing about it is that the chick is hot, lol, and it was somwhat suspensful even though you knew what was going to happen around every turn.
