Apres Vous
Daniel Auteil plays a wine expert at a restaurant who stops someone from committing suicide and then feels responsible and tries to help get his life on track. It's a vaguely black comedy that turns into a kinda romantic comedy. It had a fair amount of very embarassing moments and it was actually pretty good. Not really what I was expecting though

If You were Me (Yeoseot gae ui siseon)
South Korean film composed of a handful of shorts by different directors addressing human rights issues facing the country...oddly enough sponsored by the government.
Some of the shorts deal with things that are about universally identifiable, like weight problems, neglect to the handicapped, and abuse towards women, but, also, more localized ones like surrounding languages that are similar enough to be confused with your own that lead to problems, or learning to speak English in your own home country.
Overall, they were pretty good. I think, outside of their culture, reception could be mixed to its rather over-the-top scenarios, especially dealing with women's looks. But, at the same time, it's not done in the quite so usual fashion. There's no real melodramatic bad ending for the stories, which, to me, further drives the message home. And, often times, there is some dark humor in them. One that really speaks for the whole film is the story involving a man with cerebral palsy, or something similarly, which the actor actually has. There are moments throughout where his actions are misinterpreted and he is hindered rather than helped by those around him. Likewise, only those others who are similarly going through the same thing really understands how he feels, and grasps the problem.
This film helps put a global view on problems a lot of people face, but, also, local ones which may help outsiders understand problems they wouldn't otherwise see or know about. Also, there's one by the director from Oldboy based on a true story, for those of you interested.

I like Labyrinth of the Faun better, which I believe is the direct literal translation.
Calling it Pan's Labyrinth is pretty retarded tbh
Well the direct translation would technically be The Labyrinth of the Faun, but there's no such thing as an "apostrophe s" in Spanish, so they use "of the" instead. So "El Laberinto del Fauno" could also be "The Faun's Labyrinth."

The Man Who Fell to Earth - 7/10
David Bowie as an androgenous alien who visits Earth on a mission to save his endangered planet, then is corrupted by the material excesses of the American lifestyle. Neat concept, but bizarrely executed. Also a lot of fairly kinky sex scenes for some reason.

I liked how it was from the view of the unstable guy, but, his narration was too much like Rod Serling and he just turns into I am Sam at the end. Enjoyable enough and interesting.

Arlington Road
There were some melodramatic close-ups and lighting that were close to humorous, and the party scene after the guy takes the other guy's son home from camp, with the people laughing, was just weird. I also have a problem with how the bomb got into the car at the end. It was nice but just not to my liking so much.

American History X - 6/10
It's a very powerful movie, which i found moving at times. However I also found it extremely unrealistic, full of stereotypes which really degraded a lot of the emotional impact for me. I found it more or less funny at some moments where you can tell the people who made it were trying to trigger emotional impact within the viewer, for this i don't rate it as highly as some might.
The film has a good message and some great scenes, but i feel it is flawed all the same to the point it seems pretentious.
Win A Date With Tad Hamilton
Painful. That word just about sum it up.

Not too much better than the previous movie mentioned. Very slow, with the makers trying to build the tension, and failing. Stupid ending really didn't finish well.

Amazing film. Typical low budget European cinematography, which only adds to the charm to this film filled with real emotions, heart aches and falling in love. This film is about two girls, one is a reject without any friends who has a huge crush on a very pretty popular girl. The latter kisses the other in a bet, but ends up very confused thinking that the kiss wasn't as trivial as she intended it to be.
So yeah, the several relationships in this film are just beautifully portrayed, and on top of that, you get a really hot 14-year-old Swedish girl who starts to take a liking to another one (she looks a bit like Alice in my avatar!). Plus it has some really great songs in the soundtrack, especially the songs by a band called Broder Daniel, world famous in Sweden, I think. LOVED IT. 9.3/10
Delicatessen
From the director of Amélie Poulain. Saw this at an open air film festival, where I will be playing a gig today, actually! (I think we're introducing The Constant Gardener). Anyways, I'm a big fan of Amélie, so I had high expectations for this. The cinematography was as wonderful as I had expected from a Jeunet film. This film was very dark and somewhat post-apocalyptic, it is set in France, in what seems to be a major crisis, possibly post-war. Food is scarce, especially meat, so you can guess what they're serving nowadays.
Nevertheless, the film is full of humour, strange strange characters and more strangeness. I thought it was wonderful. 8.5/10

the 2005 oscar winner for best picture, not the james spader flick.
good film that took its time unraveling. thought it came on too strong at first in sending its message and getting its point across, but it ties it all up as the film goes on. just as in everyday life you begin to recognize it as true. do people really talk, live, think and behave like this when it comes to race? yeah, they pretty much do.
a little heavy handed but a very solid 7.5/10. not as good as Brokeback Mountain, however, which it beat for oscar.

Notes On A Scandal
think i saw a post by Danger Bird or someone trashing this film and saying it had zero value. i on the other hand enjoyed it very much.
cate blanchett [sic] plays a forty something school teacher who gets involved with a 15 year old student where she teaches and judy dench plays a manipulative, aging lesbian who becomes intrigued and then obsessed with her, her life, family, and then being with her. interesting character study and some well written roles make it an intriguing watch if you like grown up drama with a hint of, well, like the title says, scandal. good performances, keenly written, well told and well made.

i thought it had plenty in between. the retarded son, emotional teenage daughter, betrayed husband, and some suspense on just how the older woman would play her hand. and of course the blanchett character herself. once wild in youth now uneasily settled down with a man older then herself, unfulfilled, fuc.king some teenager on the tracks of an underused train depot. it was just a sexual relationship, i don't think their was much development or progression. anyway i found it fascinating and when things finally came to a head, that was fairly exciting imo.

However Joe's plans fail to materialise satisfactorily and he is forced to cater additionally to male customers and thievery in order to survive in New York, whilst Ratso slowly dies of TB. The only 'X' ever to win a best picture Oscar, even though nudity is restricted to breasts and buttocks and there is little violence. A powerful picture of friendship and dreams shattered. 8/10

Excellent. The story was incredibly well told, and acted for that matter. I don't know why so many people hate DiCaprio and call him a bad actor. Yes, this, exactly. Just last night I was watching Tarkovsky's Stalker, and it's just as if they are speaking English after a while.
It's just like reading a really great book--after a while I almost forget I'm reading words on a page and I feel like things are just happening and I'm there experiencing them.

Hmm, I suppose you English speaking folk aren't as used to subtitles. I've been reading subtitles pretty much since I could read. There are so many American and British shows on TV here that it really becomes a second nature.
If I'm watching a film in English on DVD, I put on the English subtitles and if there aren't any, I put on Dutch subtitles. I'm so used to it that it's nice to put them on to retain overview of what everyone's saying, I guess. ^-^
Anyway, sure to put on a film tonight, myself. Not sure which, however! Maybe Of Mice and Men. Or maybe Psycho.

Kind of like all the Americans complaining about Trainspotting. =)
I don't usually put on subtitles if the program is in English, but they are second nature to me in that if I am watchign a foreign picture, I don't even consider the subtitles at all anymore, and generally forget that I'll have to be reading subtitles.
Whereas some of my friends, when I mention watching a foreign movie, will say "ah, I'm not in the mood to read subtitles." Losers.

I really enjoyed it, but there were a lot of things that I didn't fully understand; I'll have to watch it again before I give it a rating.

One of my friends has it. I've been meaning to borrow it from him.

So yeah...
Boogie Nights
First half:
Introduction of the characters and developing their relationships with one another. Well done.
First half=good.
Second half:
Everything started to pick up, and the story got much better.
Second half=amazing.
Seriously, this movie is basically what it is described as on Netflix. A well played out movie about a very unlikely "family". Everybody did their parts well, and it was all very believable.
It won't be making my top ten list of favorites, but it was definitely an incredible piece of cinematography.
5/5

I'm definitely going to have to agree with not noticing subtitles. I just don't notice them after a few minutes.

Five minutes into City of God and I was pretty much oblivious to the fact that I was reading subtitles.
I just finished watching that for the first time about five minutes ago. ****ing good.

What an amazing movie. And yeah, definitely one where I was totally oblivious to the subtitles.

Concerning subtitles: We may have no problem with them but you must remember the huge numbers of illiterate retards out there who dislike the fact that everyone else doesn't just speak their own language for their benefit.

Saw Ocean's 13 tonight with my girlfriend. Brilliant film, very funny & much better than Ocean's 12 by miles & around the same as 11.

It's pretty good. 7/10
But it's fluff. It may be more way more enjoyable (and better) than Ocean's 12, but it has just about the same amount of purpose for being. No suspense, no clever tricks, just a bunch of guys getting together and shooting the breeze with ease. That's kind of all it needs to be, but I could have just waited till the DVD to get the same experience.

Braveheart - 10/10.
I must have seen this 20 times, but it still inspires me.
William Wallace must be one of film's greatest heroes.

That is all you really expect from those movies.
I hated hated hated the ending of Ocean's 12 though.

Fitzcarraldo 9/10
The always crazy Werner Herzog directing the always freaky Klaus Kinsky. Echoes of Aguirre in the film, as once again we find Klaus on a crazy boat ride in South America, althoug this time he's an Opera lover trying to fund an opera in the Amazon. A truley spectacular scene... one of the greatest achievements for film ever I would venture, invloves him traversing a steam ship over a mountainside... an act that wasn't simulated for the film, but rather actually attempted by Herzog for the movie.

Rear Window ~ 9/10
Great film, one of Alfred Hitchcock's better films (which is saying something), entertaining and exciting through-out. It's a classic for a reason....
Science of Sleep ~ 8.5/10
What a trip and what a film. Michel Gondry the director of both flawless Dave Cheppelle's Block Party and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind although he doesn't quite hit gold again here, he still has created a visually stunning, funny, and wonderfully entertaining movie. My main complaint is the main character, he's like what an immature 9 year old would act like if he were a 26 year old douche bag. I enjoyed it, but it had so much more potential. Highly recommended if you enjoyed Eternal Sunshine.

Michel Gondry's trash. Please, Dave Cheppelle's Block Party and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind were both perfect.
Perfect is an extreme overstatement, even disregarding my personal distaste for the movie.

Basically what Kage said, though Eternal Sunshine flirts with being a classic for me.
