Japanese movie made full of win. Kung fu footballers attempt to win a football tournament. Really funny, and knows it too. I didn't expect it to be that funny, but there's some good comedy here and some better kung fu with football too.

I didn't like the way the movie leaves you hanging on the fate of Hopkins' character. You know he's dead, but wouldn't his body have been lying just on the other side of that bridge? It made no sense because you have AIDS.

Last movie I saw was Silent Hill.

It can be pretty corny at times, but I think they did a pretty good job. Unlike most movies based on video games, it didnt tarnish the game. They changed the story a bit, but oh well. It captures the Silent Hill feel for the most part, and that was probably the most important part.

The King (2005)

A bastard child, discharged from the Navy, returns to his father who abandoned him (who is now a minister).

This movie was hard to watch. Not so gut-wrenching as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? but what goes on. I'd rather not go into details beyond what I've said it's about already to avoid any speculation on what goes on. Suffice it to say, one character's a complete asshole and the other amazingly forgiving.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The worst children's film I have seen in a while. It is crap. I might be biased though, because I absolutely adored 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Gene Wilder was amazing in that film. Johnny Depp seems like a crap imitation of a Jim Carrey/Adam Sandler hybrid (just checked out the IMDB page, and it turns out they were in contention to play Wonka. HA!), with all his facial expressions, sounds, movements, etc...

The children are poor reflections of the original characters. The oompa loompa's are ugly little Mexican things (no offence). The songs are crap. Depp has an American accent in some scenes!! Also, dislike Tim Burton and his goddang dark interpretations!

Just got back from The Prestige. Seeing the previews I knew I would like it. I've always reveled in the world of magic and illusions, even in film or book form. It certainly had a better plot than I imagined. David Bowie was quite a nice surprise, I didn't realize he played a supporting role in it until I saw him on screen! And even then he played that character so well I wasn't quite sure it was him. He has the most unique eyebrows, though.

I'm becoming a complete Scarlett Johansson fangirl. There is something about her, besides her (incredibly hot) physical appearance, that I find likable. I am glad she didn't take up too much unneeded screentime, though.

What I liked most about this film was that I thought I had it all figured out up until the very end. I didn't see that twist coming.

Saw Casino Royale at the weekend with my girlfriend. It's very different to previous Bond films, more violent I thought, nevertheless a pretty good film. 8/10. Craig does a good job as a Bond with a more vulnerable side than previously seen.

Watched two films today:

Animal Factory (2000), directed by Steve Buscemi. Pretty decent film of young man Ron Decker (Edward Furlong) sentenced to prison on minor drug charges who gets taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe).
Great performances by both leads. 7/10.

Halloween (1978). Directed by John Carpenter, classic slasher movie starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Six year old Michael Myers mysteriously murders his sister after she has sex with her boyfriend. 15 years on and Myers is a patient at a mental institution. Something triggers the evil inside him and during a storm he escapes and sets off on a killing spree. Dr Loomis (Pleasence) is the only one who sees what is forthcoming and despite his best efforts Myers is killing again.
This time he sets upon Jamie Lee Curtis and her group of friends.

A classic masterpiece of horror. I studied this for media studies a few years ago and it makes me appreciate the complexity and skill it took to make this film. 10/10.

I've been ill at home so I've just been watching films all day.

House On Haunted Hill (1959) starring Vincent Price.

From IMDB: Millionaire playboy Fredrick Loren hosts a party for his 4th wife Annabelle Loren at the "House On Haunted Hill," a house that has seen seven murders, Fredrick invites 5 guests: Lance Schroeder,a pilot, Ruth Bridges, a journalist, Watson Prichard, the owner of The House On Haunted Hill, Nora Manning, a worker for one of Fredrick Loren's companies, and David Trent, a psychiatrist. Fredrick will offer each of them $10,000 to spend a night in The House On Haunted Hill. They all want the money. At midnight, the caretakers lock to doors, and the terror begins!

Brilliantly shot movie, cast in black & white, the mise-en-scene is chilling and the plot full of twists. The scene with the blind caretaker was most unexpected and scared the hell out of me. A masterpiece of horror, Vincent Price is amazing. 10/10.

The Great Train Robbery (1903) - A very short film at just under 12 minutes, one of the earliest surviving motion pictures, silent of course. The plot obviously centres around a robbery aboard a train by bandits who get chased by the town sheriff and his men. Hard to rate because of the length of the film but a pioneering picture of it's time and worth watching if you're into early or silent cinema. 7/10

D.O.A (1950) - The plot of this film centres around an accountant, Frank Bigelow (played by Edmond O'Brien) who takes a vacation to San Francisco. He goes out to a bar one night and upon waking up, realises that he is suffering from more than just a hangover. He goes to the doctor who diagnosis him as having been poisoned by a 'luminous toxin' for which there is no antidote, and that he only has at best, a week to live.
From then on, Bigelow aims to find the person who poisoned him before he dies.

This is a brilliantly shot film, containing great lead characters, even if the plot is a little confusing. Also contains one of the greatest quotes in film noir history (8/10):

Homicide Detective: Can I help you?
Frank Bigelow: I'd like to see the man in charge.
Homicide Detective: In here...
Frank Bigelow: I want to report a murder.
Homicide Captain: Sit down. Where was this murder committed?
Frank Bigelow: San Francisco, last night.
Homicide Captain: Who was murdered?
Frank Bigelow: I was.

Dogs Of War (1923), written by Hal Roach (the man behind Laurel & Hardy), this 25 minute silent film is short, but funny to watch all the same. 5/10.

From IMDB:

Two groups of children are staging a mock trench battle in a tomato patch. When the battle ends, one girl's mother comes to take her to her job at the nearby motion picture studio. The other children decide that it might be fun to work there, too, and they sneak into the unsuspecting studio.

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown 6/10

I feel like I've seen this before...a strange collaboration of creatures traveling together, avoiding danger and suffering comedic hijinks and revelations about themselves and their cohorts. Oh, right. That was Ice Age 1. It felt like the film makers took a lot of shortcuts, setting up potential side stories then resolving them within the next minute or so. But then, I'm really cynical about kid's movies.

Le Voyage dans la lune (A Trip To The Moon) (1902) - I've been wanting to see this film for a long time ever since reading up on early cinema. Only 12 minutes long, directed by a pioneer of early cinema, George Melies. The plot is basic, a group of astronomers plan a trip to the moon. The backdrops and mise-en-scéne are staggering for their time, as is the effects used. The narration throughout the film also makes it particularly enjoyable. A masterpiece of early cinema. 9/10.

Attack Of The Giant Leeches (1959) - This B movie is ridiculously cheesy, a swamp full of giant leeches are attacking the locals. While the effects (men dressed in what looks to be oversized sleeping bags with fake suckers attached), acting and plot are generally ridiculous, somehow it provides enough for you to sit through the hour or so that the film lasts for. Worth watching for a laugh or two, or if you're a fan of 'creature features' or B movies. 5/10

Touching the Void

Far better than I thought it would be, having read a description of it beforehand. It's a kind of part-documentary on, part-reconstruction of two climbers' attempt to climb the west face of a previously unclimbed mountain. One of them breaks his leg and the other has to abandon him, only to have the one with the broken leg crawl, over four days, down the rest of the mountain and across rocks and stuff and back to base camp.

It was just really quite riveting to watch, for some reason. The bit where he was losing his mind, hallucinating Boney M, was great.

The characters, too, were so set in their molds it's frustrating to watch; no depth or exploration in to them. Even for this kind of movie there was still nothing to make it special.

6/10 (for the premise alone)

Best part of that movie is where the nanny got hit by the car and flew 10 ft into the air

My friend and I were the only ones that laughed at that part in the movie.

the original didn't really end at all either...there were like 4 Omen movies

Superman Returns - 6.2/10

had some good scenes, but too many scenes that were pointless, and ultimately should have been cut from the final release. If it were an hour shorter (after deleteing those pointless scenes) I could give it a higher rating.

I will also say that the older super man movies (with Chris Reeves) were ultimately superior, even though the special effects can't compare

I rented 3 movies

American History X
Clerks
Romper Stomper
(the guy working at the video store gave me a funny look for renting both american history AND romper stomper at once, but that's not really important.)

I've only watched american history x so far, and omg why didn't I see this movie sooner? It's really a great way to show WHY kids get into stupid crap like racist street gangs, and also has such a good message.

Although, it's too bad there were a couple graphic scenes, or else I think it would have impacted a much larger audience.

I cried. It was a good movie for the most part, but it loses points because it had Adam Sandler in it and his acting gets old fast. His roles are always similar, but when he wasn't acting like a dickwad the movie was good.

Mr. Smith goes to Washington

Plucky junior senator Jefferson Smith fills the shoes of a deceased member and gives those old horses a fresh breath of wide-eyed idealism.

In what seems stupid in today's movies, the overacting in these older movies is nothing short of precious. I would've canned this movie had it been made in the last 20 years but just something about how it was done makes it look like a child trying to doing something like an adult (and there was plenty of that in the movie as well). It seems evident of a more innocent time where these innocent were in their 30s. Man, I'm so jaded.

After thinking this would be like American History X, I was surprised. I found that this one was less about the affects of these gangs on neighbourhoods, but more on Gabe's presence int he gang. Not that it was a bad thing, I enjoyed it every much and I thought the acting for most of it was superb. Not to mention that it had kept the action up enough without making it just look like a big brawl movie.

This one surprised me. It was more entertaining than I had expected, being a Jack Black comedy (Shallow Hal. Ugh.) KG stole most of the scenes actually. The story was original, the jams were badass, and the Clockwork Orange reference was a nice touch. One of the funnier movies I've seen this year.
