So i just got a new amp. its a Marshall Mg Series 100DFX. its really loud and good and everything but i cant seem to get the right sound on the distortion. its really pissing me off now because ive tried heaps and it always sounds crap. im in a band and we play like sorta hardcore stuff i dont really know what you call it but it sounds like alexisonfire cross with story of the year and finch.
if anyone has the same amp could you tell me what your settings are at or just give me some suggestions as to what i could try. thanks

i advise getting a pedal
but i believe in order to get a distorted sound you pump the gain at least 2/3 up more than the master
example you have the master on 5 put the gain on a few notches under six and up
you should get a distorted sound

I have the same amp as you threadstarter, apart from mine being MG50DFX
As a general rule, the factory distortion is pretty terrible, buy an effects pedal, then crank it up

I have to turn the gain on all the way on the dirty channel. Then turn up the guitar knob volumes all the way. You'll have to control the total volume with the amp volume knob, unfortunately. So that means you will only be using the guitar vol. knob to turn it down after playing. Works for me tho, b/c I usually play at the same vol. all the time, and it's a quick adjust on the amp if I'm jamming with other players. Try it. IMO, the Marshall footswith is ok enuf for the distort that I use...I don't like it real dirty b/c then I can't hear the notes as clear and it sounds like crap.

I think i have that amp, i use the distortion on the amp, have you tried playing with the contour knob that changes the sound of distortion completely...
the dfx are fun too

I've played through MG myself and have too found they have horrible distortion. I would get a pedal, i myself have a Boss Metal Zone 2 and it's very good. As with your amp tends to be the louder you turn it the worse it will sound.
