"A large diaphragm tends to break up and will no longer act as a true piston. This phenomenon is also known from loudspeaker technology and is the reason why loudspeakers are manufactured with different sizes of diaphragms to handle different frequency areas." From Microhpone University
Has anyone ever thought about creating a microphone with more than one diaphragm, a smaller one for higher frequencies and a bigger one for lower ones?

it's not worth the expense or the effort. Careful mic selection lets you avoid those sorts of issues, and designing a flat frequency response across two diaphragms is very difficult (which is why good passive speaker boxes cost so much). You might consider trying it, but I wouldn't bother.

Oh, I wouldn't do it, I have no idea about electronics, DT or anything.
