you write what's on your mind. if you want to, you can have it rhyme, but you have to have a beat in it. i write best when i have strong feelings, usually hate or love.
Another way to write a song could be just by making a comparison to what's happening to a makeshift character to some sort of event that happens in nature such as a drought, or a gust, or a lightning. Its really cool if u manage to get deep stuff written down

Listen to singer/songwriters like Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), and bands like Sonic Youth, who usually don't use any song structure, lyrically. Also, you may want to listen to the Beatles, since they are rather good songwriters themselves. It helped me a lot after I had soaked up knowledge from all these people, maybe it would for you?

I record the instrumental music and decide what the song will be about. Then I listen to the song and come up with lyrics. I use www.thesaurus.com and www.rhymezone.com a lot too. I think I just use the thesaurus because I'm dumb and I can't think of the words I want to use sometimes, not so I can put in a bunch of big words that will sound totally awkward. That's just how I do it :shrugs:
