Besides the fact that Tom Cruise is an ***, he did a great job in this one. Of course that had a lot to do with Stephen Spielberg. A great movie; one of the best sci-fis in years.

I don't think he's an ***, but yes, a great movie. The sound the tripods made creeped me out, like a hi-tech roar or something.
Reminded me of the horn of Gondor. I really enjoyed this movie. The part where he makes his daughter sing a lulleby while he kills a man is great.
I watched yesterday. Great film. I thought the ending was an anti-climax, though.

It's just like the original though.

The orginal was anti-climactic as well. It's just a bad ending all around.

I want to punch Tom Cruise in the face. Orson Wells would not be pleased.

I don't get why everyone rags on Tom Cruise. I think he's a pretty good actor

Saw it yesterday, and thought it was great. Excellent movie, except for the bad very, very last scene (right before the ending narration).

I saw it a few days ago. It's a better than average movie but it could have been better. I guess I have to give them credit though. I still really enjoyed it.

He's not really made any bad movies if you think about it.
in lack of a better word...the movie was..."meh."
some things i didn't understand...
1. aftet the EMP, which rendered all electronic devices useless, how is it that that one guy's camcorder was working when one of the alien "vessels" came out of the ground?
2. if these "vessels" had been buried for millions of years, how is it that humans had not come across them? what with their incessant drilling/digging and all...
3. the aliens had planned this for a million years? or is that just crazy talk from Tim Robbins? well, if they actually had planned it that long...
4. well first of all, how the ****, but more so, WHY the **** would anybody plan ANYTHING for a million years? it makes no sense?
5. so they dropped off ships...a million years ago...went back to their planet, allowed a million years of biological and technological development to take place within their society, then went back to pilot ships that would obviously be far inferior to what they have now?
6. why is it, that aliens with their vast capabilities, have any interest in Earth? or to quote the movie...be JEALOUS of Earth? i know i'm getting into the world of theoretical physics now, but these are beings that are obviously of a type 2 or 3 civilization, they have mastered intergalactic space travel. they have millions of planets at their disposal, much of which would probally be easily comparable to Earth, but possibly uninhabited.
anyways, i realize i'm being pretty anylitical, but i couldn't stop thinking about these things. regardless, it was entertaining; but very disappointing in the "fear-invoking" department.

well traveling to their neighboring planet isnt what i would call "mastering intergalactic space travel".
How many people have seen the original? I watched it last night to psyche myself up for WotW (which I'm going to see on Thursday), but a strange thing. We bought a high-definition widescreen TV recently, and I noticed that on the DVD you can see the strings that are pulling the model spaceships up. That's a shame. :(
Other than that, the special effects in the old one could be worse. And Independence Day ripped off SO much from the old War of the Worlds, from the scene where they drop the bomb to the idea that viruses killed the aliens to the presence of a military base named "El Toro."
EDIT: I have not seen the new one yet, so please warn if spoilers are in your post?

I know this one will grow if I don't close it, and we don't need two massive threads discussing the same movie.
