Rangers, I think Sather actually did something good for a change, he got rid of most of the higher-paid players, now he's starting to go after some other players now that the NHL and NHLPA agreed on some important terms.
Oh and we're in the race for Crosby, with I think 3 other teams

haha. ^
what does the +/- (plus minus) stat mean?
You get a plus if you're on the ice when your team scores. You get a minus if your team gets a goal scored against them while you were on the ice. So if you have you have a +3, you were on the ice 3 times more when your team scored than your team was scored against. Does that make any sense?
CombatRock
07-03-2005, 09:01 PM
so if you team scores 4 goals and you were on during on ice during 2 of the goals you have a +2? does being on ice when the other team scores do anything to you?
Mambuto_O'Mally
07-03-2005, 09:10 PM
Yes that would give you a minus point. I'll Expain it better. For example:
Dallas 4 - Florida 1
Mike Modano was on the ice for 3 of Dallas' goals and the Florida goal.
His +/- rating for that game would be +2.
The reason, he gets +3 for his team scoring while he's on the ice. He also get -1 for being on the ice when the opposing team scores. So, 3-1=2.
Does that make any sense?
CombatRock
07-03-2005, 09:16 PM
yea i understand it now. thanks. and thanks for the Mike Modano reference :D .

hm. if you wanted to you can tell me what. charging roughing interfernce all that is. cos i see somtimes somones face gets slammed into the board, and there is not penatly then other times the guy is hardly pushed and theres a penalty. is it just what the refs say?
Red Stripe
07-04-2005, 09:26 AM
Boarding is if you take more then 5 steps to hit a guy on the boards
Charging is the same as boarding just in open ice
Interference is when you hit a player who isn't near the puck, you get a few seconds after he passes the puck though. Only if your going to hit him originally.
Tripping is when you trip somebody, simple
Hooking is when you hold a guy back from skating
Elbowing is when you lead with your elbow
Roughing is when you hit someone and add a little something like a shove or a punch
Slashing is when you hit someone with the stick under the waste
High Sticking is when you hit someone with the stick above the waste
Cross-Checking is when you hit someone with the stick when you were holding the stick with both hands across your body
Did I miss any?
I'm not positive about boarding and Charging, but I think they're right, or I left something out

CombatRock

i never heard of neutral zone trap? but i understand icing, offsides, 2-line offside pass.
Mambuto_O'Mally
07-04-2005, 10:15 PM
The trap was originated as a revolutionary offensive strategy, when the three forwards would try to get a 3 on 2 opportunity. It worked so good that some coaches thought of using it on defense to try and plug up the neutral zone. Everybody caught on to it, and thanks to that (and other factors as well, but mainly the trap) the NHL has had less goals and less goal chances. I think thats right.

A little extra info on the +/- stat:
Powerplay goals dont count. So if we were to keep using this example
Dallas 4 - Florida 1
Mike Modano was on the ice for 3 of Dallas' goals and the Florida goal.
One of Dallas' goals was a powerplay goal, Modano's +/- would actually only be a +1. However, it works the other way too. If Florida's only goal was a powerplay goal, Modano's +/- would be +2 again. I hope this is making sense.

I leave for a week to coach and come back and there's a 3 page hockey thread?!?!? Good deal...
Growing up I loved the Blackhawks, and the Flyers were my favorite "real" NHL team (Chicago fans should get this). I always pulled for the Winnipeg Jets cause I loved the name and uniforms too.
As for now, and teams that still exist, I like the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL cause I played for them and absolutely love junior hockey. As well as the Markham Waxers of the OPJAHL and the Austin IceBats of the UHL for giving me a tryout... basically I'll support to death any team that gave me a chance and weren't jerks to me.

you were/tried out for the IceBats! thats crazy i have seen them play the Corpus Crisit Rayz once and the lost 6-3. the league that the Icebats are in is called the CHL i thought (central hockey leauge).
there should be a thread devoted to you haha. your the only person on mx to play pro-sports. what league team and postion did you play again? (i forgot)
humbucking fool
07-06-2005, 08:06 PM
Blah my bad it is the CHL...typo on my part. I played in one preseaon game for them against Odessa before I got cut. I only took 2 shifts, got my *** whoooped in a fight and was sent home that night. Quite a pro carreer if you ask me. It was a cool league and team...there's a book about the 98 team called Zamboni Rodeo...it's a good book, you should pick it up.
I played juniors for the Chicago Freeze (north american hockey league), Markham Waxers (Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey league) and the Plymouth Whalers (ontario hockey league). Then one preseason CHL game....and that's it. I played some Center but mostly played defense/guy who was always in the penalty box.

I've played 0 pro regular season games, just one exhibition game.
