What's all the buzz about Donnie Darko? I have seen the movie and I loved the idea of it, but it seems everyone on the internet is either a huge fan or a full-on hater of the film.
So anyone care to shed some light on this?

Kids seem to huddle around 'deep' movies, such as Fight Club and Donnie Darko. It's really popular in the 'scene', and it has basically spread through word of mouth. I guess the reason it's so popular is because in order to gain a necessary understanding of the film, you have to pay attention to detail and really use your brain, a rarity in most modern cinema. It is a bit overrated, though, but it was really good.

I just loved the idea of SPOILER WARNING how his room was crushed by a jet engine that was sent back in time from the plane his family members were on SPOILER END. If you ask me that's just an incredible idea and I have know idea how anyone could come up with something like that.

It's actually pretty brilliant...how everything in the movie is worked together to come to that conclusion.

Yeh, it took me a while to understand it; i'm not sure if I completely do but it was a good film.

You can't understand it because even the writer doesn't understand it. It isn't supposed to make 100% sense; they want you to make your own answers for it.
That sorta detracts from how "deep" the movie is, eh?

No, I'd say that Richard Kelly does understand the movie. You really have to watch the director's cut to understand it.

If you watch some of the scenes taken out, simply cause they didn't want them in, they totally would have changed the movie eg. Donnie's pills actually being placebos etc.
I'm not saying that there is absolutely no plot or anything, just that you shouldn't try to work everything out or else you are thinking deeper into it than the man who made it.

How do the placebos totally change the movie?

I'd say that he looks more into then anyone else...just listen to him on the commentary.

You also really have to check out the site and all the additional information in the books relating to the physics of time travel. There really is a lot about this movie.

I didn't find it difficult to understand, but it was a good movie with a nice, complex plot.

They REALLY need to make more movies that stir thought. Why do we have to have blockbuster film EVERY summer since 'Jaws'? That was 30 years ago! :amaze:

Good film, I thought it was more funny. I think it was trying to more deep then anything else, especially when he started talking about Time...pfft...Gods frame!
Music was cool

"ill tell you what he said, he asked me to forcibly insert the life line exercise card into my an*s"
that bit was great, so was the rest of the film

The movie was great, not just because it was deep and sparked thought, but because it covered a wide array of what cinema is. Comedy, romance, drama, it was a very wide movie and by far my favorite movie I've seen. I'm yet to see the directors cut, but my birthday is tomorrow and I'm probably getting it. my Favorite parts were the thereapy scene when he freaks out and starts crying, "I can see him right now!!" part scared the piss out of me the first time I saw it. My other favorites were the school assembly,"I think you'r ethe ****ing anti-christ", and the part on carpathian ridge when donnie is drunk and they have the smurf discussion, damn funny. I'm still not sure if I get the movie though....

People like it because its good. People dislike it because A) They don't get it B) They have bad taste and would rather watch some stupid Jimmy Fallon movie.

I want to see it, but when ever i find it in a shop i have no money, either that or i think to myself "i'll get it next time".
I kept doing that with follow the reaper by COB, took me about a year to buy that album.

I really liked that film.
I love that Mad World song by Gary Jules, not only is it amazing but it also seems to fit with the film really well, the music as well as the lyrics.

I havn't watched the Directors Cut, since I've heard mixed things about it...
However, great movie.
I like the subtle stuff that you catch when re-watching it, such as the other feature playing in the Theater is "Last Temptation of Christ", a deliberate reference to Donnies own sacrifice.

IT's super Indie and I think it's something a lot of people think about. I don't understand the mass appeal, but I love it. And Frank is really freaky.

Amazing film. Took me a couple of times to get my understanding of it. I like how the director took a view on time-travel and manifested it into such a 'deep' film. Amazing story of one's psycological problems and self-sacrafice for others happiness

Ummmm, It's a film, that's all. It's an outward expression of deep thought within a man's mind. It's was not directly created by a factory which spews out film directly suited to it's own vision of a blockbuster. Why in the **** would you say that it covered a wide array of emotional stimuli? What does that mean? And the rest of your post is a variety of socially repulsive scenes where your inner "fears-hopes-emotions" are stirred. You should not be impressed by how they made you feel in that exotic way but understand that those scenes were necessary and therefore are not outrageous at all...

Just watched the Directors Cut and all I can say is "Wow". I've heard some mixed opinions on the DC but I thought it was great. It still didn't explain some things and did pose some new questions but it fitted in really well. Great movie, i'll probably watch the special features tomorrow.
