Well, some people thought it would be a good idea to make an official 7-String thread, so I did.
Pretty much the whole concept of this thread would be to show off your 7-Strings, and discuss them. Reviews and suggestions on the best pickups for 7s and/or the best 7-String guitars.

Anything else, 7-String related, is welcome.

But a 7 string thread does not strike me as a bad idea.

You can do that yourself if you buy some normal strings and an extra really light string.

I had two Washburns that were simply awful. I got rid of them. I would like another 7-stringer, though. I was going to get that RG version but I don't like Ibanez guitars that much. There's a brilliant LTD on eBay for £350 though I still want another 6 stringer, so I'll see.

(Hope any of that makes sense. )

You might want to find a seven stringer with a shorter scale than say an RG7620, possibly an AX7(5/2)21.

Is a 7-string and a 6-string guitar a different instrument (a new instrument) ???
Me and my buddy got in an arguement over this.

His defence was that a 7-string and a 6-string is considered (or should be considered) a new instrument just in the same way that an alto and tenor saxaphone are different instruments.

I said that the comparison of alto and tenor should be with a guitar and a BASS, not a 7-string.

A 7-string guitar is just a 6-string guitar with an extra octave (or just a few notes, I think the fourth fret and up are really the only new notes). You do not call a keyboard (or piano maybe) with different amounts of octaves a compeltly different instrument, so why would you call a guitar with the same setup a different instrument. It does not change the way you play it.

My friend said that "a bass is just a 6-string guitar but you take off two strings. So adding a string to a 6-string is also different"

Yeah but with a bass, not only are you removing two strings, you're also lowered it a bunch of octaves (maybe two?). If you added a 7th string to a 6-string guitar and then removed the high e string and maybe the B string, yes THEN you could call it a different instrument... maybe? and while we're at it, let's lower the octave of this "7-string guitar with no high-e or B string"... oh wait, that's already an instrument... 5-string bass guitar.

and besides, a bass is a different instrument, the whole orchastra one where they use a bow and there's no frets. I think when they designed the electric bass in the shape of an electric guitar they slapped on the title Bass"GUITAR"

There were a few more good points on both our sides (one of his was if you pee in someones soup, is it still soup? all you're doing is adding something. But the thing is you can't use pee as the ingredient that you're adding, because a guitar already has strings, so it's more like saying "if I add noodles to your chicken-noodle soup, is it still chicken-noodle soup? **** right it is.)

but I'll leave it to you guys to discus! :thumb:

I have thought about buying one after I buy a nice Jackson 6 string..which is after my amp.

I like the Schecter 7 Strings.

How deep are 7 strings in standard tuning? if I got one I would want something like a korn deep tone (nothing with or against korn i just like the deepness of the tone). I know I would downtune but how close could I get with a standard tuned 7 string?

and do they come stock in standard tuning?

Yes, the EMG-707, which you would need to route out a bit of the body for, seeing as how it is a bass pickup cover, and the EMG 81/85-7, I'm not sure if they make other 6 string models in 7 string form, but those two I'm sure of.

I bought mine slightly used and the idiot had put 009 on it and tuned it to E . (without adjusting the bridge so it was at about a 45 degree angle, no wonder he couldn't play on it)

Ibanez puts 009's from D'addario on them as far as I know.

I used 010's for about a year and tried a set of 009's for the first time this week. I've always used 9's and the 10's ripped my fingers to shreds after playing more than 3 hours at a time. Also I felt I was battling string tension more than I was coordinating the way my fingers moved

So I will keep the 009's for now, 10's are great for riffing and such, but I play a lot of leads and feel that I have more control with the lighter strings.

- Most people are of the opinion that the JP7s are nicer guitars then their 6 string little brothers. Reason being playability. Most people think the 7s play better then the 6 strings, and the 6 strings already play like a dream.

Try one out, I promise you'll dig them.

...And yes the necks are very thin and narrow. The guitar is built to be played at mach 10.

I tcomes in 3 main colors, Black (I have a black one), Vampire Kiss (Red), and Grey Nickel (Silverish Gray) and then there are a few rarities like Royal Blue AND even rarer Forest Green (limited run for Guitar Center or something) and Natural Mahogany. I think there might be more though.

It doesn't really affect your playing if you have good playing technique. For example, if rest your thumb on the top of the neck (which I've seen a lot of people do) you're obviously gonna feel a difference. Another example would be when you're reaching for the low B and E strings if you don't emphasize arching your fingers then your palm/wrist may accidentally brush against the higher strings. Obviously I wouldn't recommend a 7-string if you have especially small hands. Another thing to get used to is how loosely wound the low B string feels.

Well, you really can't do too many drop tunings because of the floyd (unless you block it). Aside from that, the doesn't interfere much. I can play stuff in drop-D with worrying about the B. It takes practice, but you become good enough to completely avoid the B. Then again, it's a personal thing. I can do it well.

ok dudes heres the deal.. uim torn between an rg1570 and a 1527... thins is i like my necks really thin...and the 1570 is 18mm while the 1527 is 19mm... tried them both out.. loved both... but i really want this guitar to bea shred machine.. like used exclussively for that and meshuggah type stuff if i get the seven... any help? im trying to weigh the advantages and disadvantages here...how does the low B interfere with six string playing..thast my main concern...
if you have a good 6 string then you should get the 1527.

I have an ianez grx20 and an nj warlopck which i used for downtunings (the ibanez shreds better) currently setup at AEAGF#B (\m/ nile)..so i get a 7 string cant fail...

also how versatile is a 7? i hear there mainly for metal.. which is what i do... butr could i use the low B for anything else?

a lot of people are making mistakes on which model is which

RG1527 (current)
RG7620 (disc. 2000)
RG7420 (disc. 2002)
RG7621

RG7321 (current)

then there are a few extended scale and and prestige ones but those are the more common ones.

I play blues and Jazz on my 7620 all the time, I can play metal, rock, anything. I imagine the 1527 fares the same (seeing as it's just the Prestige version of the 7620, with downgraded pickups though).

I have:
Guitars: Ibanez RG7620BK (which I looking for new pickups to put in it) and a BC Rich N7 Nirgin 7-String (my first guitar)
Amp: Crate GT212 120W
Pedals: Ibanez WD7, SM7, PH7, and FL5; Boss PS5, DD3, and NS2; DOD Thrash Master, Grunge, and Stereo Flanger

guys this thread kills me..

now you have me wanting a 7 string...and i dont even have a good quality six string.

I am probably going to try one next time I find one at GC (they dont usually have any or i am not looking).

I like the Ibanez RG1571 or whatever it is. but it isnt a floyd its just a tremelo?

are they a hastle in standard tuning? (7 string not floyd i have sorted out the whole floyd issue).

I seriously want one now...and for me to want an ibanez is quite the stretch..but since Jackson doesnt make any.

and I might also be playing rhythm in a band so i could use the deep tone.

Actually, Jackson does make one 7-String, it's the Christian Olde Wolbers sig. Ibanez's are great guitars. The 1527 has an Edge Pro 7 (Floyd). I don't see it as a hassle unless you're not accustomed to floyds, mine used to piss me off, but it's not a problem now.

Both of Korn's guitarists use 7-stringers if that's ur thing. They play a LOT of stuff of their low B.

John Petrucci and Steve Vai also both use 7-stringers. Listen to Sacrificed Sons or Glass Prison by Dream Theater to hear some pretty badass riffs with the low strings.

The B string is very loosely wound so you need a longer neck in order for it to be tense enough to be playable.

I've planned on getting nearly the same guitar as Shredder's new one for a while, and I've considered all paint choices. Red pearlburst was high on my list, but I've seen many pictures and some seem amazing while others don't. With such high quality finishes, it's really a gamble since the camera used to take it in specific lighting and at certain angles may mislead your vision from how you may perceive it if you actually held one in your hands.

I can get a pretty good tone out of the basswood, but the pickups I have suck a bit (stock DiMarzio New 7s). The wood is nice, but stock Ibanez p/us aren't. If you are considering ANY 7-String (new anyway), you usually have to change the pickups. I can stand the Bridge New 7, but the neck is WAY too muddy, but anyway it's all preference. :thumb:

a S series ibby 7 will cost you about 400-600 depending on which one you get and what condition it's it. you can only get them on ebay and used from shops.

the christian olde sig is about 700 i think. comes stock with a active EMG 707http://www.music123.com/Jackson-Christian-Olde-Wolbers-Signature-7-String-i157992.music

damien 7 is $400. it's got AWESOME inlays and PASSIVE EMG-HZs. you could switch them out to 707s or 81/7s later on though. http://www.music123.com/Schecter-Damien-7-i157399.music

there is also the RG7620(awesome lo-pro trem and dimarzio pups) and 7420(cheap trem and ibanez pups). they are both discontinued and range from about 250-500 on ebay depending on condition.

well, other than the fact that I don't really need one I would rather get a seven for alternate tunings and use my 9 for a set tuning.

I earn money by working in a hotel. Last summer I bought my Ibanez S1625 Prestige; this summer I spent the cash on a Yamaha RBX 375, and a PodXT... and about £300 for the winter.

I wont be able to work mornings apart from the holidays; which is a shame, because thats when I earn the most money.

It's also closed between October and April, so apart from my monthly allowance; my income will be zilch.

Though, when I went from work experience at the accountants; they did offer me a job in the holidays; so I could work there in the winter...

I think Ibanez migt drop the Korn bit and just release it as an unmarked 7 sting in 2006, since one of the endorsers is no longer affiliated with Korn...

what would be a decent 7 string for me to get, for around £500 (about $750)? i've been looking at a couple of schecters, aswell as a dean avalanche, plus the RG7321. i've got about £230 so far, and a couple of grand in the form a student loan coming in a few weeks. i'm not sure whether i should get a 7 string or fixed bridge 6 string i can detune though, especially for stuff like DT, Therion (C standard) or Sonata Arctica (Eb).

a 7 stringer would be better than downtuning a 6 stringer.

for £500 you should be able to find something like a RG 1527 http://www.ibanezguitars.co.uk/acatalog/RG_1527.html
£580 here, check ebay if you want it cheap

the money goes into my bank account. i'm still living at home, at least for the first year of university, and i get about £4,000, so it's not like it's going to run out any time soon. they don't know or care what you spend it on, especially since you have to pay it back eventually anyway. someone my mom used to work with bought a car with his, and if i get a job aswell, i'd only be using probably £200 or less of the loan on a guitar.

And that's fine. I've taken into consideration that it's a custom job and that he has other guitars and a personal life on top of that. So if it's likely that I won't get it in 5 or 6 months, that really doesn't bother me as I'm in the mountains for college (like a 4 hour drive) so that saves me from making a trip to pick it up and then come back.

3. There is no such thing as the 7 string jem, its a completly different guitar, the Universe.
