Ya know what i noticed? I noticed that alot of the posts in this challenge have a lot to do with religion, or something is mentioned that is semi- like it... the heavenly crush, my 'sloth' poem, and two others have mentionings of heavenly sins or noah or something...
I found it rather odd

Dancin' Man
07-01-2005, 01:37 PM
My entire song is references to the last book in the bible as the title may suggest...

Religion is something that is very important and holds relevance to many other things and is so packed with useable metaphors that why not use it? Hell, I've never been to Church and am not religious but it's still interesting.

if you cannot stand political poetry or music, here's a tip. take a shotgun, load both barrels, put it in your mouth, and blow your ****ing head off. I don't want to know how you feel about the government because most people are retarded and lean drastically to one side or the other and are completely biased and stupid. Because that is the case, I want you to write about something with more bearing on how you live your life, or with cultural significance or specific events. Write about puppy dogs if you want to but at least write it well. And hey, in politics you vote based on your opinions and can trash the other candidates for no reason so why can't I do it here?

Sushi - I like it occasionally. I really like the stuff with avacado and cucumber and carrot and other vegetables. I'm not a fan of fishy flavors so if it has fish, it has to be fresh.

here's the thing. you should review things objectively. You might hate what it's about, or what the message is, but if you're going to review things, you should review the quality of the work. If the work is of a very high quality, but it's about something you hate, I think you have to bite the bullet and give it a good review. You said to write about something that has more bearing on my life? Pretty sure the state of affairs in the world and country has a pretty big impact in my life.

I don't mean to be rude or condescending in any way but I feel that you're not a natural writer. Don't take this the wrong way, it's just that I think you have to try harder to create lyrics than some of the other writers in this challenge. But I sense effort was put in this song and the initial idea was decent. The imagery is too bland and doesn't develop into anything really exciting.

yeah i see what you mean, most of the stuff i write for the challenges forced half hour jobs i haven't got much time to spend on writing cuz i'm promoting bands at the moment together with teaching music, playing in a band myself, and doing all round jobs in the local music business, all that with raising a 2-year old relly leaves you with no time.
but i'm stopping with my band and they're gonna help me with the promotions so i will have more time on my hands.

ATC
07-04-2005, 04:49 PM
Man,Necro, sounds like you have your hands full. Have you tried using the 'forced half hour' songs you put up with your band? Its one of the best ways to get your writing act together, forcing the lyrics onto a song. Editing's the only way to work your way out of that, and it sometimes has nice results. Just a thought.

I'm all for diverse musical festivals. I'd probably get whiplash or worse if I had to go to a festival full of just 'core acts. More than likely, hardcore dancing would kill me from laughing.
Feel free to head over to the Songwriting and Lyrics forum and look at my thread in there. I'd link but I'm too lazy.

Man,Necro, sounds like you have your hands full. Have you tried using the 'forced half hour' songs you put up with your band? Its one of the best ways to get your writing act together, forcing the lyrics onto a song. Editing's the only way to work your way out of that, and it sometimes has nice results. Just a thought.

yeah thanks man
my band is officially no more, after the france/belgium tour it was the end, the tour didn't help relations in the band which screwed up the music. so we're stopping and really going for the producing side.

Dancin' Man, seems like a few people are bitchin' about your votes and critiques.. oh well I actually didn't see them too harsh because I can stand behind each one of them and see why you thought what you did.. anyways just wanted to back you on that. Everyone quit bitchin' about what someone thinks just roll with the punches.. he thought mine was cheesy and when you think about it.. lol it is.. but hey get over it you got many more chances to make up for it..
and just for subtle on this one I don't think you've been acting like a prick this challenge you just seem fed up with the same shlt from all the same kind of people
anyways good/notsogood reading all your entries I'll try to vote before the time expires

Don't use tabs. Use GuitarPro or Tabledit or something.
They're usually more accurate than tabs are and give a better sense of the song.

That or tab the song yourself but in many cases such as mine, I'm too lazy and use mxtabs instead.

every political song must start a riot? yea, bob dylan played some really hardcore riot insighting songs, with the double kick bass drumming and the wailing guitars. songs shouldn't be written to formulas, not to mention it's more poetry. and especially not to mention that tom morello was signed to a major record label, made ludicrous amounts of money via capitalism, and now plays in a ****ty commercial rock band.

The first time I listened to CTTS I didn't think much of them, but I checked them out again today and it was amazing stuff. I guess it's cause I got into Dillinger recently too, so I'm more used to the sort of harmonic disorganization they have going. I love it.

So true. But a good political song has incitement at its core. Stating stuff without its core deprives it of the soul, to me. I don't necessarily say 'write a song intended to get people to do something' but it must, absolutely must make them 'feel' it enough for them to want to take action, even if only for a minute. That's what I felt was lacking in your piece is all.

RAR, sorry, man. I'll get your crit done right now.

i haven't challenged all of them. i have questioned critiques that don't seem to be accurate/enlightening. when your critique is I HATE POLITICAL SONGS RAAAAAAH, well yea, i'm going to confront you on it. as for atc, it seemed as though he was saying that my song didn't fit the criteria for a political song, as laid down by tom morello. i challenged that and he made his point more clear, and now i'm fine with that.

bisnotch: i respect the fact that you didn't give me a very good rating because i know that i'm not that good at the whole lyrics aspect of music. But can i please point out to you that its nowhere near 'screaming religious death metal'. its about the end of the world but that doesn't mean its death metal. a major thing that determines death metal is the music. take for example apocalypse please by muse (and my music is in a quite similar style but slightly more gothic), I'm sure no-one would call that death metal (unless you're completely daft) but it's still about the end of the world.

In fact, if every poetic text about the end of the world or mass destruction is screaming death metal i would like to see the day that Seamus Heany or Gillian Clarke pick up a guitar and join cannibal corpse or Dimmu Borgir.

Just to finish, religious death metal? Doesn't that defeat the whole idea behind death metal.

anyway, i respect your views, and agree with the fact that i'm not that good a lyricist but hey the crowds seemed to like them.

good comeback. i can take any criticism that is written lucidly and seems to have some foundation. i "couldn't take" dancin' man's criticism because his "criticism" amounted to him saying, "i hate political songs and this is a political song so you suck." if i'm wrong on that, please, enlighten me. as for addicted to chaos, it seemed like he was saying that my song didn't fit a formula for political songs, and as such, wasn't good. when he clarified it for me, i had no further complaints.

This is an expansion on my vote: I dont take lyrics by genre, and when I gave you such a blunt statement, it was only to tell you how I really felt. There wasn't much along the lines of depth in that song, it just felt like a juvenille piece, and I know I've seen better from you. It wasn't the worst of the bunch though, so it still has room to make something of it.

Disco, blame the movie piece on me having to put up with a romance-movie obsessed girlfriend. She likes the idea of meeting someone by accident and then being torn apart by circumstance. It's big in the romance movie business, apparently. Hence the accidental savior stepping to the wings, waiting for the next act in the play/movie.

Everything I do has already been set to music and the 'cos' just fit. It was a pretty chorus :upset:

In other good news, I get to see Anthrax instead of Dream Theater for the Gigantour. Yay.

DFelon – I liked the idea of you being the creator of this person and writing it from that vantage point. It’s an interesting setup. However, it lacks an emotional connection that I would expect from someone who has just put all their effort into creating another person. Almost like you lacked emotion while creating this song. If you had toned down the dry language, it might have helped.

Dude. The point is that he didn't create the person and doesn't understand him/her/the monolith. The narrator is chiseling into the rock as if he could extract the fossils, the trace of the vigor and connection that once had existed but now that is immutable and impossible. Get it now?
