THRASH BAND LIST & DISCUSSION THREAD
What is Thrash Metal/Crossover?
Thrash metal was started with bands such as Slayer, Metallica,
Heathen, and Exodus in the Bay Area music scene, and bands like
Nuclear Assault and Anthrax ripping it up over on the East coast in
New York City. These bands took the metal that was around at the time
(Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Black Sabbath, etc.) and fused
it with the raw sound of punk rock. They took the hard-hitting
instruments of bands like Sabbath and added the speed and aggression
from punk music. They also took away majority of the lyrics based on
mythology and replaced them with angry, quick lyrics about violence
and discontent. Not to mention singing them in much the same way
hardcore punk bands did, they sang them loud, fast and barely audible.
Around the same time that the Bay Area/NYC thrash metal scenes was
flourishing, another, more raw, scene was culminating in Houston, TX's
punk scene. Crossover Thrash came from punks who were tired of the
same old tunes at the same speed. Bands such as DRI (Dirty Rotten
Imbeciles) and Verbal Abuse pioneered the genre. DRI was actually a
major influence to many thrash metal bands of the time. [NOTE: Dave
Lambardo of Slayer was quoted to have been heavily influenced by them
and is seen wearing their shirt in several live videos.] They infused
the same style that thrash metal was using but stuck to their punk
roots more. Thus the music was, majority of the time, faster, angrier
and rawer. Throughout the 80's NYC also gained a hold of the genre
with such bands as Crumbsuckers and Ludichrist. The genre still
continues to strive with the originals, DRI and Verbal Abuse, and
bands like Municipal Waste and Cross Examination leading the pack of
new bands to keep the genre alive.

IT'S CONDEMED UNIT
http://www.condemnedunit.com
hailing out of Austin, TX. these ATX thrashers have recently added my friend, and guitarist for another ATX thrash band (Mayday) to play bass for them. on the site they have a rough mix of their entire album, which includes an awesome cover of the song Slow Death, from the kings of splatter rock, The Accused. with rage galore, blood gushers and intense guitar solos, this ****'ll have ye thrashing around yer room for days on end.
And during the weekend of Chaos in Tejas, since i was staying with Justin Mayday, i tagged along to goto their practice space, and damn, they make a damn good soundtrack to the movie, 28 Days Later.
KEEP IT THRASHIN!

I liked Brainz Out, although they're not thrash. It's more like thrash-influenced hardcore, which is still good, but like I said, not thrash. Though I did really enjoy that song, Shut the **** UP.
As for the Dark Overlords of the Universe, really good band, I really liked the songs they had, though I say it again, not thrash. They have a more power metal sound, or "epic metal" in their words (it says it on one of their pictures), but again, not bad, but not thrash.
Now, Dr. West, that was thrash, haha. I wasn't sure if any of the bands ye were bringing up were actually gonna be thrash, but these guys bring it old school crossover style. I really liked em. If ye could get me one of their demo tapes or if ye manage to get it online, I'd much appreciate ye sending it to me. :thumb:
Although not all of the bands were thrash, they all get the Atomic Stamp of Approval, ye may die happy now.

Anyways...enough diddledallying...heh...heh...I'm surprised I fergot to bring up Mayday, though mentioned in an earlier post, not elaborated on. Well, Mayday are a political thrash/grind band who include Justin, current bassist for Condemned Unit, on guitar...a crackhead on vocals (Jeremy)...and black dude on drums (Rich)...and some guy named after a car on bass (Trans-am)...haha, but seriously, they're basically a crust band doing grinding thrash. the EP was done with their second guitarist but they kicked her out, though her vocals added a nice touch to their music. and like Condemned Unit their whole EP can be found on their website: http://www.maydaythrash.com

I think a lot of bands you guys have called thrash arnt. I am not an advocate of thrash, nor do I hate it, I really enjoy thrash but only if the(my) mood is right. I am an avid music listener and I discern the genre of the band when I listen to it, I don't listen to what other people call it, I don't even care what they call themselves half the time. I mean sum 41 called themselves punks.
an example of a band you guys called thrash are Machine gun romantics. I saw them live a while ago and have some of there music, I didnt consider it thrash once. its not even very good. does anything with screaming and power chords get called thrash? yes it does. but it also gets called hardcore, or, better yet, IS hardcore and NOT thrash. not all thrash has screaming, not all hardcore has screaming. theres really fine lines between all the punk genres.
you guys called D.R.I thrash, indeed there later stuff is thrash, but don't forget they're old stuff (dirty rotten ep/lp) is 80's hardcore.
also holier than thou? isnt very thrash, they're more hardcore. thrash sounds more like scholastic deth, uzi suicide and spazz.
there are also differences in thrash (yes I know, there are MORE genres)
stormtroopers of death are a good example of thrash metal.. not to thrash, not to metal.
but in the end. my opinion is that thrash is a stupid stupid STUPID genre. its like all the division of hardcore (post hardcore, melodic hardcore, NEW hardcore, 80's hardcore) there is even THRASH and HARDCORE THRASH and THRASH METAL! forget it!!!! sure a lot of bands are "thrashy" but cant they just stay HARDCORE, or PUNK, or METAL. jeez, there are so many bands that don't fit in any genre or even a combination of genres! catagorising a bands into narrow genres is an insult if not to them then to you. so many bands evolve or change. Gang green went from 80's hardcore (which originally went by the name of hardcore) to a butt rock band. The freeze (more 80's hc) became poppy as hell. DRI became a thrash band.
my ending statement and the overall point of this is to say:
everyone who listens to a band just because of there genre is an idiot. anyone who spends countless hours labeling bands is retarted. this includes myself because when I listen to a song I figure out what genres it belongs to and what bands must have influenced it.
but yeah, thrash is retarted.

Aight buddy, one thing, you're "retarted".
...and who ever said we were listening to these bands, soley because they were thrash? No one did, and there is a difference between hardcore and thrash, although alot of hardcore bands in the 80's verged on thrash, but weren't. Take, for example, Poison Idea, 80's hardcore masters, had really fast music, but were they thrash? no, they were hardcore, people understood that. You on the other hand, don't. Like I posted earlier, Heavy Metal+Hardcore=Thrash Metal, although Thrash Metal+Hardcore=Crossover Thrash. 80's Hardcore and Crossover thrash have always been really similar, but there was always that one guitar riff or change in speed that pulled 'em apart.
Oh, and why would we keep the genres at PUNK and HARDCORE, and METAL, when Hardcore came form Punk, why not just keep it at PUNK and METAL? How about that? We get assholes like ye in here all the time bitching about genres and whatnot, but no one cares they just straighten em out, and leave em be. Here's the usualy purpose of genres, if i told ye to go listen to Battalion of Saints (80's hardcore) and ye liked em, and than I told ye to go listen to Municipal Waste (crossover thrash), there would be a large chance that ye wouldn't like em, why? because of the slight change in sound. Thus we rip apart genres making more accurate genres so that people like you and I can find music that is similar to what we like, or even people who like similar music.
One last thing, what's with yer avatar? If ye hate thrash so much, why does skeleton have a flipped cap? Ye do realize that that kind of cap is usually found in the thrash scene right? Just thought ye'd like to know that.

Sorry man, but they ain't thrash. I have all their albums, them being my favorite black metal band, and I know for a fact that they ain't thrash. Oh, and Venom might have coined the term Black Metal, but they are far from it, at least far from those who used the name. I agree that IN have a thrash influence, but they are black metal. No offense, but you're the first person I've ever heard call 'em thrash.

That's one thing I've never agree'd upon. Venom may have coined the term ''black metal,'' but they are far from it. Sure they sang about Satan and Hell and vampires, etc. but their musical styling was nothing like what black metal became. The black metal bands that came later used the lyrical content and added blast beats and other such noise to the music. Although similar to thrash, it clearly isn't.
PS - I still say Impaled Nazarene are more black metal than thrash.

wow, i didn,t know the accused were back together.
anyways, i am a huge thrash and crossover fan, as the two genres are the things i listen to most along with punk and power metal. my favorite band ever is DRI, and im glad this thread happened. most of the bands i have heard of and are great. Cryptic Slaughter i think are really cool because they managed to not only do the crossover of punk and metal, but they threw in some grindcore and made it more extreme than most music. somebody mentioned Hexenhaus, and i just found out about them. they're a really good swedish prog-thrash band led by Mike Wead, who is now in Mercyful Fate.
oh yeah, when my band gets some recording done i will post a link to some on here because we are pretty much melodic crossover. we started off as a mediocre hardcore punk band, but we changed some members and i moved back from texas to nashville, so we have become basically that. its more melodic than any crossover due to my influence from power metal and melodic death metal, and my own style of guitar playing. you'll have to hear it to really understand, but so far it sounds really good. our bassist is being dumb. our name is the cripple beaters, but he doesn't like it, but i refuse to change it unless we find a better name, which its hard to top a name like that. so yeah, thats my story.
