AFI's great, one of my favorite bands. I can't say that I like the way their music is going right now, though. I own all of their full-length albums, and I think Black Sails in the Sunset and Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes are their best releases. Sing the Sorrow was good, but its a really moody album and I can only enjoy it when I'm in the right mood.
So what are the current rumors on the new album?
I haven't heard much other than they are definetely in the studio recording it right now. Some are saying that they went in months ago, some are saying that they went in a few weeks ago. The album isn't expected until next year sometime.

Got some catching up to do. =/
They were okay/good til they sold out.
And by 'sold out' I mean changed their sound to get on MTV, made music videos, signed a major label for money and raised ticket prices for their shows.
I don't get how they did. I think Sing The Sorrow seemed like a natural progression for the band after The Art Of Drowning. They changed plenty of times during the course of their existence without trying to be on MTV. Plenty of bands I bet you listen to make music videos. They signed to a major label because Dexter of Nitro Records told them that they couldn't do much more for the band than they had done in the past, being that Nitro is an indie label. Dexter suggested they leave Nitro. I don't know about ticket prices as I have never seen them live. But that's what happens when you are on a major.
I remember El_Shizzy did a excellent AFI thread a while ago.
Thank you. :)
Are they really straight edge? They don't sound like most bands that are.
Davey and Jade are the only edge members in the band.
So what are the current rumors on the new album?
Nothing new has come out in a while, but last I heard (which was a few months ago) they had a LOT of songs together, but not yet recorded. They were in the studio at the time though.
They started the movement with their song 'straight edge', i'm pretty sure the entire thing was a joke though.
Haha, no Ian really claimed edge. But it wasn't really a movement 'til him. He really didn't smoke, drink, or f'uck. Not sure about nowadays although I know he doesn't claim edge anymore. But I've seen an interview with him, so he was serious about it. He really walked the walk.
I think that about does it.
AFI is coming up next in my playlist with my second favorite song of theirs, "The Boy Who Destroyed The World".
And ummm, my thoughts? If you can't tell, I am in love with this band. Not the best thing to happen to punk by any means, but they are my favorite band. Words cannot describe all that owns about this band in my mind.

i am under the impression they're recording alot of tracks that they wrote for sing the sorrow that didn't get on the album. they wrote something like 70 songs at that point, so there's about 55 left over. i'm not sure if they're also writing new ones too. what direction they go in though, i can't say.

death of seasons? is that the one you mean? unless you're talking about the cello (i think) outro, which still isn't techno, there's nothing in that song that seems even remotely out of place. and side projects aren't really the issue (although that's news to me, any more info?).

they haven't really strayed into techno just yet, and if they've got a techno side project, i can't imagine their new album is going to be techno-laden. and let's not forget, it's their band, and i cede them the right to make their own decisions about what they play above any third party, myself included.

AFI's new album will no way whatsoever be like there old stuff. AFI are a continously evolving band always incorporating something new in every album. I agree that the new album might have some techno flavour to it, but who cares? If it does it probably a tiny bit if any, and how good did it sound in Death of Season?? I also dont see why people say that Sing the Sorrow was such a disapointing album... i own all of AFI's records and i certainly dont believe sing the sorrow is their worst......

Industrial doesn't necessarily replace the guitarists and drummers, it usually just incorporates a synth and more digital sounding effects. Their newer stuff (Black Sails and on/When jade joined) has just been hardcore with a more melodic and experimental. There older stuff was too generic (not saying I don't like it) for my tastes. Also I'm big on bands experimenting/being not generic.

I liked AFI. Their early albums (such as Very proud of ya or Answer that and stay fashionable) are great punk albums, but as they got into a darker, more gothic aesthetic (talking about the time of Back sails in sunset and beyond) They lost some of their style, which was amazing, but their darker songs appeal more to me. The last album was good, at the time, right before Atreyu and such acts came abound, leaving AFI as another mediocre "-----core" band. But yeah. I like them. Art of drowning is an amazig album.

Please don't post in this forum again.
Why might i ask that you said that?
I assume it's because you said AFI have more talent than any punk band, implying that punk bands are generally technically inproficient.
Anyway, I'm another lover of the new stuff over the older. I like the gothic influence on Black Sail and particularly on Sing The Sorrow. I think Davey's songwriting has steadily improved to date, I'd regard songs like Death Of Seasons and Dancing Through Sunday as superior to most of their earlier material.

that's crap. most bands in general are technically inproficient. the fact that alot of sucessful punk bands might seem to be this way is a BS generalization, at best.

personally, i like all of their stuff. i don't know if i could say which is better, their old or new stuff because it's so different. it's like choosing between apples and oranges not like choosing between different kinds of apples. i hope that analogy made sense. Although i don't feel like i identify with the lyrics as much as i used to, it's still amazing music and i look forward to the new album
Their newer stuff (Black Sails and on/When jade joined) has just been hardcore with a more melodic and experimental. There older stuff was too generic (not saying I don't like it) for my tastes. Also I'm big on bands experimenting/being not generic.
Yeah, the old stuff was really just the same kind of punk that every other punk band was doing. Now they're their own little thing. There really aren't any bands out there that sound the same. It's nice. I suppose the reason they and Streetlight Manifesto are my 2 favourite bands is because both are really quite different from other bands of their genre and don't have a tonne of bands that sound like them floating around.
Just getting into them. I bought Sing the Sorrow today, and i think its pretty mad. I dont usually listen to punk, or hardcore (whatever they are) but I think this great.
Email me (dollzrgr8@yahoo.com). I'll send ya rare tracks. That goes for anyone else out there. I have every rare AFI song with the exception of Man in a Suitcase and Love is a Many Splendored Thing (someone said they'd send me them) and 2 of the Sing the Sorrow demos (Bleed Black and Paper Airplanes). Anything else you want, just ask and I'll send it.
I haven't heard much other than they are definetely in the studio recording it right now. Some are saying that they went in months ago, some are saying that they went in a few weeks ago. The album isn't expected until next year sometime.
They went in May 23. They say they're hoping as early as October, though we all know it could change (and probably will).
Their newer stuff is going to keep going downhill, Davey said in an interview that their new album will be much more industrial sounding :( ....Very Proud of Ya and Black Sails are the shiznit though.
If you think of what Davey and Jade's favourite bands are though, it makes sense. I mean, both have Joy Division tattoos and Jade's got a Cure tattoo. Davey sang with Ronan during the song Beloved when VNV Nation was in the Bay Area. I mean, they're getting a lot of their industrial vibe out of their system by doing Blaqk Audio, but there's still gonna be more layering like in STS, and that's fine with me. I like industrial. It's fun (but so is techno....Daft Punk woo!)

HAHAHAHA,
death of seasons? is that the one you mean? unless you're talking about the cello (i think) outro, which still isn't techno, there's nothing in that song that seems even remotely out of place. and side projects aren't really the issue (although that's news to me, any more info?).
At 1:08 when he screams about malignant tribes and posthuman extinction excelling unrecognized, there's an industrial breakdown in the background. Being slow as I am, I thought the industrial breakdown was Davey's voice echoing during Susie's cello for a long time too. The industrial part blends in really well.
what i meant was that theyre gonna be including more techno stuff into there music, not replacing the other instruments. And plus davey and jade have a side project called Blaq Auido, which is like a dark EMB style techno outfit. And Davey does DJing under the alias 'DJ Glitterboy'. I like AFI, but sometimes they just make me think "WTF?".
stop saying techno. It's industrial. Techno's happier. And it's spelled "Blaqk" with a "k" Jade also called Davey "DJ Hairstix" There is a difference between darkwave, EMB, techno, goth industrial, electronica, etc. though I'm bad at that genre area. I just know I can tell industrial from techno.
As far as electronic effects, there's also the intro to Miseria Cantare, the space between ...But Home is Nowhere and the Spoken Word then between that and This Time Imperfect then on the This Time Imperfect outro.

Nothing has been recorded for Blaqk Audio yet. They're putting it on hold until after AFI releases their 7th album. Jade says they've written a few songs for it though. That means expect BA in 2006.

yep more industrial stuff being added and more "electronic layering" which I think means more of the stuff like the Miseria intro. It's supposed to have more of a "Cold Pop" feel which I think means "We used to sound like the Misfits. Now we'll sound like the Cure" so it'll be more like Cure-pop

Davey did a vocal track on one of the Transplants albums, the song was "Quick Death" and it sounded hella industrial/dance. His vocals sounded more like his older stuff though, which means if the new album is industrial we can expect the following:
1) New album has older sounding Davey vocals, which are more digitized than Phil Anselmo's.
2) Jade trades in his guitar for his super-new-cool keytar.
3) Thousands of fans of the old AFI riot and set fire to Davey's Glitterboy clothing warehouse.

And the "...Hopelessness" track is off of the Fat Wreck compilation, Short Music For Short People. It is commonly mis-pronounced, as there are a lot of versions out there that have the word "Sod" in place of "Thawed". I use to have a live version of it, until I finally found the recorded one.
It's only thirty seconds long, more or less.
And no, I'm not on DF. I am cheap and usually don't want to pay for these types of things. Although I have considered. Browsing through the boards sometimes, I see that there are a ton of idiots, so that turns me off.

oooo I didn't realize that was the title going onto 2 lines. I thought it was another song :-P I have that live one and the recorded one, but only the recorded one is in the download thing i made. Haha, I actually put it wrong on my post. I put in "Soil". I always think of the alternate title when typing it out, so I guess that's a good excuse for me.
Well, there's the arseholes, yeah. But I'm mainly referring to the people that call Davey and Jade and well......... the whole band "sew hawt" all the time. Maybe it was a bad period of time for those boards. But the dicks and the preteen morons kept me away from the boards for a while.

Oh, discussing appearances is now strictly prohibitted....though on the DF section we did get away with "What does Fritch look like? How tall is he?" and then Gavin and Alli got mad and closed it

1.) AFI - The Art Of Drowning
2.) Swingin' Utters - Five Lessons Learned
3.) AFI - Black Sails In The Sunset
4.) AFI - Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes
5.) Bad Brains - S/T
6.) AFI - Sing The Sorrow
7.) Bars - Introducing...
8.) AFI - Very Proud Of Ya
9.) Minor Threat - Complete Discography
10.) AFI - Answer That And Stay Fashionable
Heh. Sorry, I just need that for personal reference.
So to give this post a point........ Favorite songs everyone?

I can't do that. The most specific I can get on musical favourites is that ska is my favourite genre, AFI is my favourite band, BSITS is my favourite album, GCIST is my favourite song, and Streetlight Manifesto is my 2nd favourite band.

anyone know if they will be touring uk soon ?
They won't be for a while. They just started recording on May 23. They expect the new album out around October, though that's tentative (meaning it'll probably be pushed back like it was with Sing the Sorrow). They'll tour after the new album.

People always bash them. If you've ever heard they're old stuff, you would find out how cool of a hardcore band they were.

I think some people jut listen to an AFI record once and make a judgement or dont listen to it enough then make a judgement.give it time and it should grow on you

I just hope they dont try so hard to be emo like their last album. Thats why it sucked.

AFI has made one of the most surprising and un-expected changes in style. Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes is one of the most amazing albums I own and Sing the Sorrow is the whiniest piece of **** I ever heard from a good band.

Mabe since they relesed that compilation with all their old stuff on it, they've realized how crappy they are as a emo/pop-punk/post-hardcore band and just stick with their old sound. That would make me happy.

I really doubt they "tried" to be emo on sing the sorrow and i know that sing the sorrow wasn't emo at all. I'm hoping that the knew album will much more like black sails in the sunset or the all hallows ep..

AFI are not pop-punk

Although I don't like Sing The Sorrow the best, I sure as hell hope they do not go back to their old style. For one, that means the band is really trying to regain old fans even if it means sacrificing what they really want to play. Another reason is because Sing The Sorrow was a d'amn good album despite you little punk rawkers' opinions. They play that style so good.
I think you guys will be disappointed by the next album if you want it to be like Black Sails.

My grilfriend has never liked punk but it think i might have got her into listening to AFI on a regular basis now. This is one of those bands that can reach fans of different genres.
I heard thay are in studio now. Does any one now when the next release will be?

AFI changed the way I looked at music which led me into getting into punk music, so they certainly have that effect.
They are indeed in the studio right now. But there hasnt' been any dates set for a release to my knowledge.

they are in the studio now and they have said that the earliest they're hoping for the new album to come is around october... but as sing the sorrow was pushed back the same will probably happen to this album...

Yeah, on myspace, they just said that we should expect it around October. Although I'm not exactly sure if that is really them on myspace, blacklantern said October too, so that's a good sign. I am so excited now. :D

um el_shizzy i dont think AFI have a profile on my space.... not that im aware of... if they do can you please notify me of it?? Yeah october seems to be the earliest release dat but im putting my money on around december.... they apparently wrote 70 songs for sing the sorro, wonder if any of them will make an appearance on the new album...

Pretty sweet band, but I don't really like the direction of STS. It's good music, but it's getting a little too pseudo-goth teen friendly. And I know that's not a valid reason to judge a band, but I just can't shake that feeling. Definitely a very talented bunch though, and I always go to see em when they come around.
edit: also, probably one of the reasons their shows are so awesome is because of their rabid fan base. All the pseudo-goths know all the lyrics, and the crowds are never ****ty, just a bit young and depressed =)

so what do you reckon will happen to all these other songs that they dont use? a b-sides album(s) maybe? or even maybe a box set... i hope that they dont go to waste...that would be a shame... i would also like to see a AFI dvd released, that would be awesome...

thats apparently what happened to Sing the Sorrow. they wrote a bunch of songs and just chose 12 songs (14 songs on the UK cd). I guess it would be pretty hard to narrow it down from 50+ down to around 15.. I hope they come to Australia.. I've heard there live shows are awesome i just missed out last time on tickets.. I wont this time..
