Two questions:
1. When the hell was the last time they toured East Coast? I haven't heard about a show with them for like 2 years.
2. What is taking so long with the new album? ****!
1. A year and a half ago Davey got vocal nodes and had to stop singing and get surgery with the possible loss of his voice. They cancelled 10 shows, first time they'd ever fully cancelled instead of postponing
2. Davey's doing vocal tracking right now

Is his voice the same, or is it different now because of the surgery?
It's pretty much the same. If anything, he's more dynamic in his range (like he can go a bit lower and a bit higher) because I have the mp3 of AFI performing the Cure's Just Like Heaven, and it's awesome.

AFI before Jade was in the band is pure Hardcore Punk. When he joined their sound changed a lot, but you can still 100% hear hardcore chord progressions and such. Personally I classify their later works as Post-Hardcore in the sense it take sgreat influence but adds more to the music.

It was just a false statement, as hardcore as a genre has been around for a while and is still around today. So your reasoning for calling them post-hardcore was incorrect. However, they are post-hardcore in the sense of the musical style instead of the time period.

they're not punk anymore, they were when they started out, but now they've moved on to post-hardcore. they've said multiple times that they dont' want to keep one constant sound, they want they sound to keep evolving. and to the person on the first page, they didn't change their sound to get on MTV, everytime their sound has changed was because they wanted to move forward.

Well I guess that makes sense. Everyone's been telling me Tiger Army are a rockabilly/psychobilly band. And I suppose they are kinda, in a modern, updated kinda way. But it's a way I don't like. They sound like they do everything halfarsed. They don't have the bollocks to go fully gothy like AFI, nor do they have the balls to go fully psychobilly like The Nekromantix or something. AFI's not goth. The Cult is goth. Bauhaus is goth. Skinny Puppy is goth. AFI is not goth.
Maybe they like both so they blend and do their own little genre-bender thing. AFI's stuff is pretty genre (and gender) bending

AFI has like 3 pop-punk songs......
And Tiger Army seriously kick major arse. And they are psychobilly. And The Meteors are actually not as good as most psycho bands. Still good though.
Ya know, I was thinking the other day while listening to the Nerve Agents' "Jekyl And Hyde" that AFI probably does just as much outside of the band as they do for themselves. Davey sings backup for bands like The Nerve Agents, Tiger Army, etc. and has Son Of Sam. Adam was in Tiger Army for a bit. Hunter drums in another band. Jade was in Redemption 87 before AFI and did backup vocals for AFI when in Redemption 87.
This all not mentioning Geoff, Blaq Audio, and live performances.
I think almost every band related to them in some way is awesome. By this, I mean bands like the Swingin' Utters and SOIA too. Man, I would have loved to see them when they played shows with any of the above mentioned bands.

Which 3? Girl's Not Grey is the only pop-punk one I can think of. Silver & Cold....maaaaaybe. The Leaving Song Part 2 isn't though. Pop-punk doesn't have those kind of choruses.
Don't forget Hunter Revenge. Hunter was in the Force. Jade was in Loose Change. Jade was in Influence 13 (with Nick 13), F3BW (with Nick 13 and Levi of Loose Change), Taxidermy (played bass), a hardcore one with Smith (no name), a pop punk one with Smith (no name), and an un-named one with Adam and Jeff. 3 was an estimate. But I think it's about right.
A Winter's Tale
Days Of The Phoenix
This Celluloid Dream
and I think that's about it. I don't think GNG is pop-punk to be honest. It's not all that different from something like The Nephilim. I'd put it under melodic hardcore.

I have never heard anyone refer to anything pre-STS as pop punk, so I was thinking "mainstream". DOTP I can see. This Celluloid Dream....not really. It's a common misconception that mainstream = pop-punk. However that is very wrong. I'm talking about pop-punk like The Adicts and Descendents.
MCR and Simple Plan are NOT pop-punk. That's why it's safe to say that AFI has pop-punk songs and none sound like those bands. Those bands are considered pop-rock/power pop.

I have to use a different set of language around people who know what they're talking about and those who watch MTV. I usually forget who's which. In fact, I think we went over this before. I asked my friend about emo and she went "ask val she knows everything about emo" so I asked for a band rec and what the band sounded like. She said some acoustic rock band O.o I was like "so....nothing like Fugazi?" and she went "Who's Fugazi" *slaps forehead* I've started to go "Wait wait! afi IS making a new album, due early next year.

Pop-punk is poppy punk. And that is more or less what the songs I listed are.
Hey Dustin, come here more often man.

Dream of Waking is the tenth song on The Art of Drowning if you have that album on vinyl. If not, you won't get that track. Download it, because it is really one of their best songs.

has anyone heard head like a hole (NIN cover)? it's on the grand theft auto: san andreas OST. it's different. but i like it. i reckon it's better than the original song.

It's also on Nitro's Punkzilla compilation. Oh, and I agree about it being one of their best. That's a great song. I like to listen to that and A Winter's Tale over and over and over.

I burned a cd with all their vinyl-onlies and the My Michelle and Last Caress covers and all...and the **** thing stops playing on my cd player halfway through My Michelle. I like that song. I hate my cd player. It's a piece of ****. It won't play my Bauhaus cd at all.

Any news on the new album?
RetiredAt21
09-27-2005, 01:21 AM
I haven't heard a thing about it.
Only Jerry Finn (no Butch Vig) is producing it. Mikey said so yesterday. He also says, "2 4 15" and no one knows what that means, but it will probably lead to more theories. Someone suggested it was "February 4, 15 songs" or "2 April, 15 songs" but those are a Saturday and Sunday, and cds only come out on Tuesdays. Ryan Wilson has also confirmed that he's doing backing vox on the new album.

Somehow I doubt it, but you never know.
I have noooo idea. There's also an actor. I thought maybe you guys would know who he was as you all have muuuuuch better knowledge of music than I do. Except *maybe* in ska, but even then I can't go "Jerry Dammers played keys for the Specials" well, ya know, except that it's the Specials and that one I really do know, but with any other band....f'uck if I know
omg omg omg! I was just watching the music video for Point the Blame by Catch 22 and when they showed the drummer, I saw a white A on his shirt and went "Was that an AFI shirt?" cuz it was the font...then later I saw it again and I went back and paused it. It's definitely the Porphyria shirt. Go here (http://www.skafreaks.com/modules.php?name=Downloads2&limit=20&letter=C&order=artist%20ASC,%20dln%20ASC) and click on "watch" next to Catch 22 Point the Blame (last one on the page) I also saw someone in the crowd on there wearing the same A-F shirt as I have.

For a while there i was obsessed with this band after discovering them thanks to the Misfits and fell in love with Sing The Sorror but never really looked at their back catalogue. I went a while no listening to the band and go into hardcore more and got some of their older albums and have loved them ever since.
What i really like about this band is the Bass Licks that Hunter uses which aren't that super techinically hard but sound amazing.
RetiredAt21

Hunter is an awesome bass player. He's one of my favorites.
Any of you guys have the String Quartet Tribute? I just bought it and it's really good. However, they need to learn to do tracklistings. Classically, they mixed up The Last Kiss and A Weathered Tome; the rest of it has only one song (Lower Your Head and Take it in the Body), I think, in the proper place.
Shizzy, do you have the unmastered versions of Spoken Word and Head Like a Hole? I'm missing those 2 mp3s. Oh, and can I have your Born in the US of A mp3? Mine doesn't have the whole song.

Bollocks to AFI at Big Day Out. I'm front and centre for the Stooges, with a big "IGGY" carved into my chest and a huge banner saying "Iggy Pop I Want To Be Your Dog"
Is that the big Despair Faction news on the front page? Are they playing anywhere else?
And maco, I'll get the song to you when I can. Probably tomorrow. I got that day off work and school.
The DF news is that if you live in CA, are 18+, and can get your *** to Hollywood on the 15th, you can enter a sweepstakes on the DF site to sing background vox on the new album.

I like it too. I didn't at first, but after I kept listening to it, I began to enjoy it more. This a a lot different, but then again I expected it to be.
I think the reaction is going to be kind of weird. And I was thinking to myself just a second ago. This band does something different every LP (except VPOY). So even if you don't like their new stuff, there's no need to dwell on it since they might be going for something completely different the next time.
maco, what's your e-mail? I don't want to YSI.
I just think that unless the 80s come back in full force, the pop stations won't play AFI nearly as much as they did during STS. Then again, I've been hearing a lot more synthed music lately, so maybe the 80s are on the way back in. Hey, Bowling for Soup covered Modern English's "Melt With You" and made a video of it and now they've got a "Punk Goes 80s" compilation out at Hollister, so who knows?

AFI, I really like Sing the Sorrow and Black Sails, those are the only two albums I own of their's but I have a bunch of random songs from my punk compilations. It seems people aren't into Sing the Sorrow, but to me it's an amazing album, it may lack the intensity that most punk has, but what it makes up for is in sheer song craft and ideas. Also the sounds Butch Vig creates when he produces albums is something I would desire when I release an album on a label. I think Davey Havok's voice is rather good, it reminds me of Glenn Danzig but a little more attack and higher pitched, but you can hear the influence. Black Sails is a good album, but I think it lacks the strength that Sing the Sorrow had when it comes to sheer writing. But that's just me. AFI is a great band anyway you look at it.

by the way, you can download the song Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 37 by right-clicking and "save target as" this link (http://www.afiseries.com/download/mp3s/RabbitsAreRoadkillOnRoute37.mp3). It is provided FREE by afiseries so no one jump on me about download links. Or go to http://afiseries.com and read the news and download it yourself. Whatever. It's a free song.
The interview where they played it can also be downloaded at afiseries here (http://www.afivideos.com/forums/dload.php?file=AFI-KROQ-October-05-Interview.mp3) (right-click "save target as" just like with RAROR37)
By the way, it's not a new song. It was recorded during the STS sessions and just now is being released (finally). It is neither a new single nor anything to do with the album-in-progress.

So, every time you see a male kissing another on the cheek, that automatically makes them gay? I've seen straight men kiss other men on the lips.
And the second picture seriously holds no significance at all. There are pictures of every AFI member (and members of other bands) doing something like that.

Whether Davey is gay, straight, bi, or asexual does not matter. It only matters to someone with the intent of a date. However, Jade says Davey's not gay. The band denies him being homosexual. If he is and is lying, fine. He can be in the closet. Just take his word for it. He says he's not gay, so as far as any of us are concerned, he's not. It's been suggested by "my intimate is no one" in ...But Home is Nowhere that he could be asexual. Who really cares though?

Do you mean the one with the "I blow!" joke? I'm not sure, but he could respond like I do. I have been called a lesbian before. I don't care, I just make jokes about it instead. Like, a girl goes "ugh guys are so annoying! i hate guy problems and they're all a'ssholes!" and I went "So go for girls!" See? It's a joke! He gets called gay so often that it just becomes "eh...why fight it? play along" I have a copy of Under the Rose 2 right in front of me. It includes
D=Davey
S=Sammy (All Bets Off)
D: Umm... you know a lot about prostitutes, unlike myself.
S: You that that the 'trick' was the prostitute. The trick is actually the customer. When a prostitute 'turns a trick,' it's working a customer. A lot of prostitutes in San Francisco refer to their pimps as 'coaches'.
D: Nice euphemism. That's positive. And the prostitutes themselves?
S: They refer to themselves as hos. I like 'painted ladies'.
D: I like painted boys.
S: Well, you are a painted boy.
D: True. I talked to someone who told me they saw a transsexual prostitute who was walking down the street and was like "Hey, honey! Do you want some of this" and slaps his ***, "or do you want some of this?" And whips out his d'ick. And he had boobs.
S: I've spent plenty of time where the tranny prostitutes work; some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Fritch, leave that out. The whole thing about "I love trannies."
*laughter*
D: Who's this hot girl that you keep following around?
See? He jokes around.
If you don't want to have an intelligent conversation I won't bother...I have an opinion you have an opinion obviously we are both stubborn jerks...I really amd not worried about Davey getting girls because I have a girlfriend so I am not really concerned with how hot he is...and if you think that go right on ahead. As far as real proof besides what I have already said this is what I based my opinion off:

I understand the 2nd one might just be prepping for a show but he looks kinda sketchy in it...and the first one please don't even argue with it. Oh and does he have a girlfriend or wife? Not that not having one makes you gay but......
First one: I think they asked if they could kiss him for a photo. There's another guy jumping in the [original] picture like "Look! I'm meeting him too!" They're posing.
Second one: Makeup makes you gay? Uh....
Do you think that they are hardcore because they have tatoos or what??? How can anyone say they are hardcore? Maybe hardcore goth...
Go listen to A Single Second. Please! And goth? You've got to be kidding me. Do you have any idea what goth music is? Have you listened to Bauhaus or The Death Cult?

You say something extremely idiotic and expect someone to reply intelligently? You are a bigger idiot then I thought you were.

I just love this...you guys are all so proccupied with getting angry at me...it is so ridiculous. Yeah a lot of the stuff I do stay is stubborn and stupid but I have opinions and it isn't my fault that everyone has to be so uptight about everything...get over it, if you really want to stop hearing my comments don't reply to them and just ignore them. There are too many punk kids (yeah that is right kids...I bet half of you are 17 or younger who have no real experience to share except what they learn in forums) in this place to have a real good convo about anything. That is what I do when I come across a stupid post by someone in a thread that I like...I hate how everyone is so god **** territorial in this joint. It is like this freaky *** rule that everyone follows. If someone who has a crapload of posts says something it is deemed the word of god...but if anyone else says it they are just a noob idiot...this close mindedness is killing me

Coming into a thread about a band, and saying the fans suck balls and the band sucks IS against the rules, hence you will get attacked and called an idiot, because you are one!
I have an easy way to ignore you, how about a ban.

Once this thead goes to 1,000 posts, I'm writing up a proposal to make it official, replace the first post with the Band Profile I wrote, and get anyone who calls them gay or emo banned.
I've been waiting to make it official, but I a lot of people are against a lot of official threads. I may just link the profile and not merge.

He's got himself a week ban.
And Dustin, thanks for mentioning that 1000 post thing, I may start using that with all band threads, since so few actually reach 1000, itll be a good idea.

Thanks for taking care of him. Again.
And I even had a good name if it was going to be official. I gotta go back through all their song titles and try and find some of the best.

I agree with this entire post.
That song has been stuck in my head for the past few days and it won't get out. But I don't mind. :)
And props to chairman for the name. I think that will be the one. We can always change it if it sucks, or if there is a better name on the new album.

Yeah, it is a double post, but that's one more towards the magic number.
Shizzy, I just editted that post a bit because some people seem to think it's a new song / single from the new album. And because afiseries now has the interview up for download too.

Rabbits Are Roadkill on Route 37.
It's a song they just released that was recorded in the STS sessions. It's f'ucking awesome! The whole song is amazing all the way through. Specially the breakdown. If you look a couple posts above you, you'll see the link where you can just download it. No need to wait for an e-mail.
