So I found out that the 'cassette player' in my dad's high-end hifi stack is actually an 11 year old DCC recorder. Digital Compact Cassette was invented by philips some 13/15 years ago to bring the benfits of digital to the analogue cassette, but fell out of fashion quickly due to the huge popularity of the CD, developed about at the same time. Should be DAT quality 2-track tape, only difference being it is in compact cassette form. Just wanted to share this with you.
Anyone actually used this and can tell me anything about it? I'm looking forwrad to making some recordings with this unit.

They aren't great.
They actually fell out of favor because they couldn't compete with the 8-channel ADAT system which was designed at the same time. DCC was intended for recording purposes, which is nice, but the recorders are clunky and inaccurate to scan through the absolute times. Additionally, they're difficult to repair, replace, and find tapes for b/c nobody uses them anymore.
If you've got one in good working condition and a supply of tapes on hand, go for it. Otherwise, you might be able to pawn it on eBay for enough money to get a firewire hard drive.
