Fall Out Boy

Fall Out Boy is:
Patrick Stump - Vocals, Guitar
Peter Wentz - Bass
Andrew Hurley - Drums
Joseph Trohman - Guitar

Fall Out Boy have quickly risen from playing garages and clubs in Chicago to places all around America and Europe. Their blend of beautifully crafted hooks, fast beats and tongue-in-cheek lyrics have gotten them to where they are now; a part of Island Records roster.

The band appeared on the scene no shorter than 4 years ago in 2001, when they made a 3 song demo. These 3 songs were enough to catch the eye of label Uprising Records, and in 2002, the band made a split EP with Project Rocket.

It wasnt until Janurary 2003 that the band made their first full length record, Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend. The 3 songs on the demos were redone, and put together with 6 more hard-hitting and raw pop-punk songs, including the now famous "Honorable Mention" and "Pretty In Punk".

Touring for this CD was quick, as major pop-punk label Fueled By Ramen Records were eager to sign the band. The label were allowed an advance from Island Records to let the band record their debut for FBR.

So in May 2003, 4 months after they recorded their first LP, Fall Out Boy headed to the studio again to record what some say is the best record of 2003. Take This To Your Grave was unleashed on the world May 6th, 2003. Jam-packed with 12 chirpy pop-punk anthems like "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy?", "Saturday" and "Chicago Is So Two Years Ago" (An obvious play on their former choice of venue for the band), the album featured more polished sounds without losing the momentum the band prevously had.

The band played 280 gigs in 2003, supporting both records released that year. Of course, it wasn't just this that go them their fanbase they have now. Touring with bands like Less Than Jake, Rufio, All American Rejects, Yellowcard and more got them noticed, and the band just 2 years old headlined the Radiotakeover “Back to School Tour” in August and September.

And how did Fall Out Boy bring in the new year? They signed with major label Island Records. That's right, in one year, all this drama went on for the band, and they managed to get a deal with one of the biggest major labels in the world, sporting bands like cKy, Sum 41, Thrice and Thursday.

2004 saw Fall Out Boy in the studio again, this time recording an acoustic EP which was tenetively entitled My Heart Will Always Be On The B-Side Of My Tongue. 4 new acoustic songs (1 of these would later feature on their Island Records album debut) and 1 acoustic version of "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy?", and a DVD included with the pack, left fans begging for more.

The band toured hard in 2004, heading across the pond to Europe and toured with huge bands such as Blink-182. The band also headlined the “Believers Never Die” tour over summer, quickly followed by a slot on the Warped Tour. It was at the end of the year the band headed back to the studio to record their first album in 2 years; From Under The Cork Tree.

The title came from when the band's tour van crashed, and apparently Patrick wrote a bunch of the songs on this album from under a cork tree while waiting for help. The album sounds completely perfect in sound quality, losing some of it's raw feel previous albums had. But this is quickly made up by the fact that FOB never lost their gift for making superb pop-punk songs. Newer riffs were tried out on this record, and Patrick's vocals sound tremendous. Songs like "Dance, Dance", the previously acoustic "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" and "I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy And All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" really prove how matured Fall Out Boy are, yet how they never lost their touch with the music.

As if this wasn't enough, the band have decided to remaster their first 2 albums. TTTYG was remastered back in January, retitled Take This To Your Grave: The Director's Cut (And included 2 extra tracks. Roxanne, a Police cover, and a remix of Grand Theft Autum/Where Is Your Boy), and FOBEWYG was remastered last month in May, and retitled as Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Grlfriend: The 2nd Date Remix.

And as for the band, they are busy touring and promoting the new album. They have toured with FBR new kids on the block Gym Class Heroes and The Academy Is..., and have toured with Silverstein as well. The band have appeared on television sets all around the world on such programs like The Conan O' Brian Show and TRL (Beating off The White Stripes in the video chart). Hell, they recently took over KROCK2 radio for an hour and got to pick their own playlist. They decided to play the whole of their new album, something only the cockiest and funniest band could get away with!

It may have only taken 4 years for Fall Out Boy to get into iPods of pop-punk fans everywhere, but they were 4 long years filled with studio time, touring and promotions. They have never taken themselves too seriously, something I think has helped them get to where they are. Yet they have always expressed their hate for the decline of the pop-punk and "emo" scene, and have done their part to get kids to not follow the scene (One demo for the new album was called "I Like You A Whole Lot More Before You Were A ****ing Myspace Whore")

Great FA. FOB has been one of my favorite bands for the past two years. My friend actually saw a few of the guys walking around downtown NYC yesterday. Too bad I was in a completely different part of the city.

Anyway, the new, "sugar, we're going down" fans are going to suck... but I guess we have to deal with it. Their set at Warped probably won't be that good either. But... I could be wrong.

I think that a lot of people prefer TTTYG because it was their breakthrough album and because it carries the raw feel along with the poppy riffs and typical FOB lyrics. FUTCT is a lot more polished and "quality-perfect", but you still get that FOB sense of pop-punk with it.

I like both equally I think, maybe leaning towards TTTYG a little more because it has some of my favourite FOB songs on it. Then again, so does FUTCT

ok, just because their lead singer has a high voice doesnt mean he has no balls, seriously. The man has a great voice, and if you think it sucks, its probably becauase he doesnt scream in every song. Good singing takes talent, screaming doesnt, thats what babies do because they havent developed the ability to talk. Not that i hate all screaming, the used and mcr have some good stuff, but singing well requires talent.

Twat_Out_Of_Hell
07-05-2005, 02:34 PM
Screaming takes a huge amount of talent, hence how there are more bands with people that have good singers than bands that have good screamers.

The singing in bands such as Fallout Boy and coheed and Cambria is awful, IMO

isitzac
07-05-2005, 02:42 PM
i never said the screaming in fob is good, i tend to skip over it because it isnt as good as screaming in other bands, maybe its just my opinion, but i do prefer singing to screaming.

Kif

Patrick doesn't scream at all, Andrew the drummer does.

I agree with James though; FOB's screaming does get on my nerves a lot. Screaming has no place in a band like this, and it just was never going to be pulled off well. And I wasn't aware there was screaming in Co&Ca?

There is, its very raspy singing tone in some songs and a full on scream in others. Listen towards the end of 'Hearshot Kid Disaster' and the second part of 'Junesong provision' (is it ALL!!). Mostly there was just screaming on second stage turbine blade, not alot was on IKSOSE.

I don't see how his voice is high pitched...like at all. In fact really he goes deep a lot, like in "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner" like people have been saying. His voice isn't really high pitched at all.

His voice is VERY high pitched on Take this to your grave

hey, you're not cory!
07-08-2005, 12:19 PM
Its higher, but its not VERY high pitched. Its nothing compared to Rufio, Coheed and Cambira, Circa Survive, Anatomy of a Ghost, The All-American Rejects, Copeland, Saves the Day, Motion City Soundtrack and a ton of other bands. Its just another reason people use to talk **** about them cause they're on MTV and its not "cool" to like a band on MTV.

Listen to him on "Get Busy Living Or Get Busy Dying" on the last chorus, and he is still hitting the high notes at the end. Patrick's voice is powerful, and I think that's a reason people don't like him. People tend to have a problem with bands who can sing (The Used instantly come to mind), which I find a bit weird

I know that his voice can get high. I'm not saying that. He gets high in "Dance, Dance" and "Our Lawyers Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued". I'm just saying that his normal singing voice isn't particularly(sp?) high and I don't understand why people keep saying that.

And yes, he is an incredible singer.

I actually disliked FOB at first, after seeing the lyric "Ill be your best-kept secret and your biggest mistake/regret" I dl'd the song and listened to it, and it wasnt at all what I expected.

Then I heard "Sugar, We're going down." So I decided to give them another chance, and I downloaded a few more songs. Id have to say I like them alot now, after getting used to them. Their lyrics are Super-catchy, and make good phrases for the depressing people I know that like to garner attention with them.

No, it was from when the band's tour bus crashed on the road. Patrick apparently wrote a lot of the songs under a cork tree

this is from www.falloutboyrock.com under the biography section:

When he was a little boy, Fall Out Boy bassist and lyricist Pete Wentz enjoyed reading “Curious George,” “Babar” and Richard Scarry books, but his favorite children’s book was “The Story of Ferdinand” by Munro Leaf. The story, about a giant bull who sits under a cork tree and smells flowers instead of getting into the ring and battling a bullfighter, was so inspirational to Wentz that he titled the band’s breakthrough record From Under the Cork Tree.

I dislike FOB because I feel there lyrics are beating a dead horse (though better than most pop punk), and I think that the guitar, bass, and drumming is very boring, repetitive, and lacks inspiration.

No need to bump up a month old thread, unless it's something important. That was obviously not very important.

I think the reason people listen to it is because that's what they enjoy. Everyone has different tastes.

In the case of Fall Out Boy, they attract a wide variety of people because their songs tend to be very catchy (especially the one's that are played on the radio/MTV). If you don't like it, don't listen to it, but also don't go around questioning other people's choice of music. Everyone likes different things, deal with it.

If i had no shame I could be doing what Fall Out Boy does. Lots of people can. As musicians(and listeners) we are inherently critical for good reason . Art demands to be critiqued and bad art deserves to be ridiculed.Deal with it.

All music doesn't have to be art nutkick. Before you criticize a band, listen to the songs other than whats on the radio. Dont prejudge something you know nothing about. People can listen to whatever they want, because if they like it, they will. I happen to love Fall Out Boy for their simplicity, just like I love other bands for their intriquicy. I honestly doubt you will change anyone's mind by saying that the band sucks, because once again that is your opinion. Get over yourself man.

any one who says fall out boy is simplistick should not be talking, unless u can write better lyrics than pete and patick, u cant say much about simpicity, they are the best of both worlds, deep meaningful songs, and catchy music, what band has that blend perfectly. Blink had the catchy riffs, but no lyrical content, Thursday had the content, but there songs were to complex for the evryday listener, the only bands that can even stand up to FOB in the category of blend of music and lyrics is TBS. I kno what your saying, TBS isnt good, well aparently they are or they wouldnt have made it through the NY scean and made it mainstream. I have been with these bands since they started and am happy and sad for them when they hit it big, but FOB deserves it, they worked hard and they proved that u can sound pop in music but when u look up the lyrics or actully LISTEN to a song closely, these are the most clever lyrics since.......im almost gunna have to say ever

*Long paragraph full of grammatical and spelling errors*
He was implying that their music was simplistic. Not the lyrical content. Besides, if you want complex/"deep meaningful" lyrics, try bands like Circle Takes The Square, Coheed & Cambria, and as you said, Thurday. I for one enjoy complicated lyrics. Some people don't. It's opinion. But in my opinion and I'm sure most others, Fall Out Boy does not, in anyway, have the best lyrics ever.

o sir, i agree, i was mispoken when i said they had the best lyrics every, i purely ment to say that they had more complex lyrics than most bands with there sound. I have checked out thoes bands u posted and like them all, im very diverse in my music from pop-punk, to hardcore, to jazz blues so on and so forth, go**** i even like billy joel, i was pointing out the fact that some people hate on Fall Out Boy, bucause they have such a a prejudice for pop-punk because of the either sillyness or shallowness of there lyrics dont stop to listen to, in my opinon, the biggest up and comming pop-punk band since Green Day hit the people of suburbia, thats saying alot since i adore what Green Day did for pop-punk music

Real TBS Fan or whatever. What's your favorite song off of "FOB's Evening Out With Your Girl"? Just asking. I said I happen to love FOB for their simplicity, trust me kid, their guitar work is very simple. A band doesnt have to be crazy go wild with their instruments to make an impact.

ok dude, sorry, but i guess u thought i was taking a stab at you. I wasnt but i get kinda mad when people say fall out boy is just another simple dinky pop-punk band, and to me thats what it sounded like you where callin them. My fualt, we are prob both huge FOB fans and shouldnt be divided but united with eachother agaisnt haters and fakes who claim to know them just by "Sugar were going down"

as far as "Evening Out with your girl" Pretty in Punk is good, but my fav is #8 "Moving Pictures" even though like alot of people who are from the south i was first exsposed to this amazing bad with "Take This to Your Grave" but i have no shame in that because i went and bought "Evening out with your Girl" 5 days after hearing "TTTYG"

whats your fav FOB song of all time, mine has to be "Yule Shoot Your Eye Out" its clasic and acustic, what more can u ask

Man, I don't know what you were talking about earlier about Taking Back Sunday being no good but that doesn't matter. Don't get me wrong I love Fall Out Boy and all the other bands that are included in your name. I have liked them also since they got started, I hate posers to, people that think they know Fall Out Boy just cause they listen to the radio and here "Sugar Were Goin Down" I just think that you shouldn't worry about that in here, and also just be open-minded to everyone elses comments, and don't think the bands you like are perfect. I'm also not trying to smash on you or anything. Just trying to tell you what I think.

Also haha my favorite Fall Out Boy song is Chicago is So Two Years Ago.

o dude no problem, i think i confused a few people with my thing on TBS. I was trying to make a point, but it came out wrong. Im very open minded to others comments, ive been reading these threads for the past 2 years and jus today decided to join in the fun. Sorry if i seemed like i was downing other comments, not my intention at all

Can anyone send me Fall Out Boy's song's "Snitches And Talkers Get Stitches And Walkers" and "We Don't Take Hits, We Write Them"?
I really want to hear good quality versions of them, but can't. I want to read the lyrics to the first, as I hear that's the final title of "I Liked You A Whole Lot Better Before You Became A ****ing Myspace Whore", and I wouldn't mind reading that.
