View Full Version : Jonzey's thoughts on the DS

So yesterday I decided to go buy a DS. I got one from Gamestation along with a starter pack and Mario 64 DS for £101.99 (That was with an £18 reduction for trading in my SP- which I bought almost a year ago for like £80 :upset: ) I was gonna get Timesplitters 3 for my Gamecube too, but nowhere has any copies. Not even online. It's really pissing me off now.

Anyhoo, first impressions were that it was smaller than I thought and the screens were really good. It also looks a little ugly when it's closed, but why would I be looking at it when it's closed anyway? The touch screen is pretty good, though for playing games I find it's better to use the thumb pad on the touch screen but the + pad for precision controls- especially since the slightest slip on the screen can send you running off the edge. The stylus is good as long as you don't have to press the abxy buttons- well, for me anyway since I use it in my right hand.

Now for the game: I was expecting it to be pretty much the same as SM64, but there's actually a lot of extra stuff added in- when I walked into the room with the secret slide I was just like 'WTF?!' And I did spend the first 10 minutes as Yoshi just running around eating everything. I'm just a little kid at heart really. It did take me a while to get use to controlling him with the touch screen, but once you get the hang of it it just feels natural. The camera is a little dodgy though- I've not really got the hang of it yet. There's apparantly 30 more stars to get than in the original- I think a lot of them are around the castle with a few more in each level.

Some of the mini games are awesome, some are really weird and funny and others are fairly useless (like the Yoshi one when you have to pluck the petals from the flower. It turns out she loves me!) and they all start out really easily but suddenly get much harder on later levels, and yet keep you wanting to go back and play again.

Anyway so far the DS has been loads of fun and I can't wait for more games to come out (there aren't actually many out yet but there's loads of good ones coming soon. I'm kinda pissed off my DS didn't have the Metroid Hunters dem though) but I highly recommend it to anyone.

Anyone know an exact release date for Mario Kart DS? I'm seriously dying to play it. Also, it in Double Dash form where you have 2 people on one Kart or Classic where its one character per cart?

Hey Jonzey, did you know that all DS games are region free, so you could import an American game and it would work perfectly for your British DS.

yes it is, i got it the other day.

it's a fun game, i was gutted because i thought it only had twelve levels, and each level lasts about 5 minutes each. it's set out like 5 sections in one level, if you knwo what i mean?

anyway, once completed i was happy to see that i unlocked a new book, so thats another 12 levels, and someone on game faqs said they are stuck on book 10, so it has a hell of a lot of replay value. nice game.

i also got yoshi touch and go! which is another great game, although it lacks in story there are 4 levels, score attack, marathon, time attack, and another i forget the name off. great fuin though, and all the levels are created randomly each time you play.

If anyone was a fan of Animal Crossing for the Gamecube.... then we both are on the same level when I say, Animal Crossing DS will be the best DS game created. Ever.

A store in my town (Entertainment Exchange in Nottingham) sells new DS's for £78, and new DS games for £23. I really wish I had a job so I could buy one - I love interesting/original games and the DS looks perfect for me.

Wait. Do you mean the REAL FF3? That has only been truly released in japanese? or do you mean FF6?

FF3 is the only FF ive never played, only because it was only released in japanese. :thumb:

Whenever I play the DS, I get sidetracked looking at the wrong screen at the wrong time. I'm more of a one screen man, but I still think it's a fun system in itself. When it's slow at work, my and another co-worker will get on the display ds' and network the Metroid Hunters demo and play deathmatch for awhile, that's pretty fun.

You could always import one.

But, it's in Japanese

I wish I had the time to learn that language:(

And a lot say it's one of the easiest to learn too.

i'll probably get one when the price lowers - just like what i did for the gamecube. although i doubt it will go down to half of the original price :p (i mean, 60 quid for a gamecube!?)

I've been in love with my PSP for the past two months, but I stray from fanboyism. I'm actually more of a Nintendo freak than anything, considering I have every system they've released except for the DS (yes, that includes the Virtual Boy. Hey, it rocked *** when I was 5, of course it broke in storage, so I can't play anymore) The main reason I didn't get a DS was because, well, I was a bit disappointed with it at launch. It had SM 64 and... what? Really? I played SM on my little sister's DS, and it was fun, but I'd really rather pull out my N64 and play that. Where is the good original stuff? Feel the Magic was somewhat fun (I played for about 5 minutes at an EB), but that wasn't the HOLY SHIITES MEGA-AMAZING title I needed to get me on the DS wagon. So I waited over Christmas, still, nothing. Warioware: Touched was fun, but again, not the awesome title I was looking for. Then the PSP came out, with Ridge Racer, FIFA Soccer, Metal Gear Ac!d, and Wipeout Pure. All four have been awesome, and definitely worth getting a PSP. Plus, I've actually used the movie support for the Memory Stick, and have bought a 512 MB one so I can fit a bunch of stuff on there. The battery life-well, I haven't even noticed how "short" it is. It hasn't run out on me one time, and that was with a three hour car trip, both ways, plus the three days in the middle without charging. But, now, finally, the DS seems to be getting a little kick in its giddyup. Online support finally coming for it, plus a stream of good titles (Meteos, Pac-Pix, etc.) Personally, I think the DS should have waited to come out later, when it had its act together a little bit more (Ping Pals ) I'm still cautious about buying one, especially with my love for the PSP and my current cash shortage, what with all the console games coming out right now, but I'm considering a lot more than I was. And no, I'm not trying to turn this into a battle thread like all the others, I'm just getting an honest opinion from a serious gamer out there.

I think the DS and PSP systems are just aimed towards different types of gamers. I looked through the entire list of PSP titles yesterday and the only ones that seemed to have any potential whatsoever in my eyes were Smart Bomb (which looked pretty bad once I dug up some reviews of it and noticed that Core developed it) and Metal Gear Acid (which I probably wouldn't buy but seeing as Hideo made it I guess it could be good). However, there are 5 - 10 DS games I'd love to have.

Yeah, they pretty much are geared towards different demographics. You can deny it all you want, but its true. Here's how I see it:
DS: Younger kids, Nintendo fans in general, pedophiles (touching is good :amaze: )
PSP: Teenagers-adults, The "fad" group, people with $250 to burn

 Ah, the ignorance of the ''younger kids'' statement.

A lot of the touch screen games require patience, dexterity and good hand-eye coordination. A lot of ''younger kids'' have none of those.

Well, if you couldn't really tell, about half of that post was a joke. But you really can't deny that a lot of DS games are geared towards children *ahem* Pokemon Dash *ahem*. Yes, I know stuff like Metroid and some others are made for more mature groups, but in general, more DS games are geared towards younger kids than PSP games.

Yeah, I play all games as long as they are fun. Screw demographics. The only games I dont play are the really horrid ones like powerpuff girls and that garbage. I play Pikmin and I'm proud of it. :thumb:
