So I'm learning ascendancy and the end of everything.

anyone else learning Trivium stuff?

Yeah i sat down for about 2 minutes yesterday and tried to learn Ember to inferno, but after that long realised i couldn't be bothered learning that lick.

"Everyone nominate matt in the top vocalists"......

No because despite his ability with guitar, he's not a good live vocalist, im not saying he's bad, but there are 100 out there better than him. Nominate him in the top 100 song writer's thread if there ever is one.

I worry about Heafy, I've seen early footage of them live and his vocals sounded ok. However lately i've noticed his voice is already starting to degrade because of his noob approach to screaming.

It's really sad tha everyone is just letting him do it too

Well, when I first purchased Ascendancy, I liked it...

After listening to it seven times, I want to burn it and feed the remnants to the dogs...I'm not sure why I haven't yet. Every time I try to listen to it, my rating of it goes down .5 points. It started out a 4.5, then went to a 4, then to a 3.5, then went to a 3, and now it's a 1.5.

Definately, because pretty soon: bamf agh blood going all over his microphone, horrible wretching and stabbing pain in the vocal chords.

Oh man, that was not a pretty picture.

I agree, when I've seen them play live there's always a great atmosphere and he's a great frontman but his voice isn't the greatest. I notice it even more when I see live videos. I guess that might be a reason why he gets the crowd to sing the chorus' of songs so often, he can't do it very well himself.

Endless Obsession
10-29-2005, 01:41 PM
Yeah, seriously. He should just have a conversation with one of the old regs from the Jam Session (Merkaba-1) that man gave the perfect step by step description on screaming correctly.

Or you can watch the zen of screaming.

Shred Danson

Yeah, I don't get the thought process. "Oh I liked the album the first time, but now I don't I just want to throw it away blablabla"...what the hell made you like it the first time and then hate it more and more you listened to it?

Benzum

Because other people started to like it I would of thought, I think it's a solid album, a real step up from their previous material, I greatly look forward to more Trivium, I met Matt once, he was funny, but I was too drunk to remember most of it :upset:

Heh, anyone seen the "Gunshot" video yet? I thought it was kinda...well..lame  It would have been better if they had some kinda concept to it instead of just playing the whole time then having the fans rise up when they do the "HEY! HEY! HEY!" interlude...that just made me laugh for some reason...

True enough. Merkaba's whole write-up is how I learned to though :thumb:.

Shred Danson
10-29-2005, 02:36 PM
Yeah, you gotta scream through the stomach, not the throat...it hurts way less and projects the scream better :)

i am the robots
10-29-2005, 02:37 PM
Screaming through the stomach isn't necessary, that is just one of the many methods, the throat is the most important part though. You use your throat to create rasp, you use your throat to protect your vocal chords. By using your throat I mean using it to funnel air to creat rasp, don't ever close your throat.

btw. Inhale screaming owns all.

Some death metal vocals sound pretty bad tho... especially when it is too deep. I think black dahlia murder does death vocals perfectly, not too deep, but very powerful

I love Trivium, I own every album, and I ****in love every song on them....They are one of the greatest bands out there right now....I have heard on several occasions and from many Metal Magazines that they are foretold to be the next Metallica....Which IMO is a possibility...though Metallica is still a better band by far....BTW "Dying in your Arms" is my favorite song by them....

I agree, compared to their other material, Dying in your Arms isn't the greatest. But I like it, it's really catchy.

I'd dunno when it comes to their best, Like Light to Flies, Fugue, A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation and Requiem come to mind.

Haha yeah its incredibly catchy one has to give it that, specially that bloody solo haha, Plus the lyrics kinda tell the story of me dumping my ex. Anyway has anyone else noticed how the riff at 3.07 of like light to flies just doesn't sound.... right with the solo and even a little bit with the drums. Just not good time melding. But then theres the awsome spanish sounding bit after, so it makes up for it.

the dying in your arms thing.....yeah its a good song, just not their best, the 'worst' song on ascendancy, my favourite is either fugue, requim, 'gunshot, or washing away me in the tides.

trivium are awesome live, i saw them in nottingham on the ascendancy tour and they owned!

Guys, I need an answer to a question:

What is, in your opinions, the hardest and easiest (whole) song to play (by Trivium) on guitar?

I'm just interested, I can already play a few riffs etc, these guys are good, let me tell you that.

By the way, I am not a guitar n00b.

mr black
11-09-2005, 03:56 AM
hardest - ember to inferno (from what i've tried, possibly decleration)
easiest - dying in your arms... derrr

bringbacktheshred
11-09-2005, 04:02 AM
Yeah, thanks. I found the 3rd riff in Like Light To Flies rather hard, fingering-wise. It seemed as though my fingers were those of a monkey's.

Turkish
11-09-2005, 12:01 PM
Yeah, Dying in Your Arms is easiest by far...took me 10 whole minutes to learn how to play that.

I always had trouble with some of the fingering on A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation. And the solo on Like Light to Flies is tough too.

Britton
11-09-2005, 12:29 PM
The easiest is The end of everyting

But then again I only have ascendancy

The way he strains his voice live and on the records, he will probably screw his vocals over in a few years unless he gets some sort of vocal lessons.

After the first few songs live, he can't sing the choruses to the songs any more and he just kinda yells them. That right there shows that he is not screaming properly, and his voice will be shot in no time.

OK good I'll stick with this thread, but the other one was going OK.... these guys are incredible, anybody who doesn't like them just hasn't listened, anybody who says they are generic hasn't listened or has just heard "Like Light to Flies". Ascendancy IMO is considerably heavier than From Ember to Inferno, which, if anything, I would tag with the more generic metalcore label. They went to a far thrashier and heavier sound in Ascendancy, while simlutaneously adding even more melodic and catchy passages. If that makes sense

:p

Thats annoying. I have listened and I DON'T like. Fair enough they play fast, but so do a lot of bands now. I'd rather listen to something with a bit more subtlety to the songs. So I do. I've heard all of Ascendency, and none of it appeals to me, none of it really stands out as something spectacular.

Neurosis, Isis, Cannibal Corpse, Tool, Cephalic Carnage, Slayer, early Metallica, Muse, Mastodon and Lamb Of God, Behold the Arctopus to name a few.
Thing is I know some of those are lacking subtlety but at the same time the way they sound is fantastically heavy ie Cannibal Corpse. As for Metallica and Slayer, they started this kind of thing off. I know that doesn't make them automatically better, but I much prefer listening to them than Trivium and the like.

Well yeah, I listened to Metallica and Slayer way before Trivium existed. I think Slayer is a better band than Trivium of course. Metallica used to be, then they got ridiculously bad....

Cannibal Corpse is just too over the top, I can't see listening to a band that obsessed with gore, its just too weird

I see your point, but I can't actually think of a single band where its the lyrics I listen to them for. I love Cannibal Corpses aggression in their playing, what the lyrics are about don't mean a thing to me.
And you're bang on with the Slayer/Metallica thing to boot. Still not gonna agree about Trivium though. :p

Thats a good description.I dont think the thrash sound is as prevalent as maybe the metalcore and Gothenburg. Most of their songs arent quite what Id call 'fast' when compared to thrash bands like Kreator(old stuff, not the new Gothenburgish stuff, which I do love btw) and Death Angel, and are much more "mid-fast" pace like Gothenburg bands. And they are pretty metalcore with the occasional breakdown and clean singing parts."Dying In Your Arms" reaks of metalcore(which I also love btw).

A hybrid between Atreyu and Trash/black metal guitars...

Sorry people, once again my idiot little brother has decided to make me look stupid by posting using my account.

Anyway i reckon they're a trash influenced Metalcore band at this point, their riff's, while not entirely metalcore, still hold all the breakdowns and call signs of a metalcore riff. The speed obviously is what gives it it's thrash feel, and the vocals are definatly metalcore at the moment. Although i saw Matt saying that they were taking out the gutteral vocals and replacing them with 90's Hetfield style vocals...
Personally i love Matt's studio voice on Ascendancy, but hey, im willing to see how they fare in the next album. Although all respect again to Matt as a guitarist but he can't sing clean vocals live.

Yes, I see alot of potential in the band and they're not too bad, it would just be a shame for them to try and change their style too drastically due to all of the media attention they have been getting (god knows fame and money has changed alot of people). holy crap. I must've posted that a really long time ago, I visit this thread out of chance today and this is what I find lol What a coincidence.
Yeah I reckon Teague is a rare name, I actually havent heard too many people with that last name.

I'm planning to go see Trivium with COB on monday. It should be a good show. Those two plus Amon Amarth should be a nice break from the monotony of school work/not going to shows for 3 months. Hopefully I can actually make it to the concert. Missing the Opeth show in tampa after already getting my ticket was a huge blow to my morale so I'm desperate for a good show.

I hope Matt's screaming improves on the next album because thats what really ruins Trivium for me. Like i stated a long time ago, his screaming is too monotonous and metal-core-ish, it would be nice if he added more raspy-ness to it ala Wintersun. Also, he needs to stop autotuning his singing voice so heavily, it really sounds annoying. I've seen live vids/live shows and he doesnt sing ANY where near as good as on the cd, which should say something. Oh well, at least hes pretty good at guitar and the rest of the band is pretty kick a$$ (especially Corey).:thumb:

Wow this threads moved about 1 post per week give or take !. My favourite tracks would be like light to the flies, from ember to inferno, gunshot, and Rain. Does anyone think that Matt will ditch the whole emo hair doo and ear stretchers, and more importantly get some singing lessons and stop autotuning his voice in the studio ? If he claims to be ditching the screaming on the next record (what he's actually good at, even if he does it wrong) I fail to see how they will be good live if he's always using his quite honestly horrible clean vocals...?

This is not to bash Trivium, i think they are awsome, especially at the age they are. Im only looking to see if people think they can improve like i think they can... :chug:

Yeah they will definatly improve, i just worry about Matt's voice, because live... it sucks... and if he's going to do 100 shows a year closing his throat to scream... we'll he's going to end up like his idol Jesse Leach (killswitch) who needed to leave because he destroyed his voice.

who really cares about what matt looks like, hes a damn good guitarist, one of my fav vocalists, and an unbelievable song writer, the stuff he churned out on the roadrunner united album is amazing. true, he could destroy his voice but along with screaming he is a damn good singer. i went out and bought ascendency about a month after it hit stores, im on my 5th copy cause i listen to it so much the wear and tear destroy it, i have a copy next to every cd player in my house too. i just read an article on how much metallica was an influence on the band and now i always laugh during gunshot to the head of trepadation during the chant cause it reminds me of creeping death. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE SONG ON BOTH ALBUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????

Sorry but he's not a good singer... an insane guitarist, a brilliant song writer and a good screamer (wether he does it wrong or not).

i've watched him on many live occasions and his clean vocals are bloody terrible. Don't be so ignorant in assuming him to be a good singer, with autotuning available to artists these days anyone can sound like freddie mercury.

My favourite song on the cd is 'Like light to the flies' or 'Rain', and like a lot of the clean chorus's 'like light to the flies' is sickeningly auto tuned. It's especially noticable in the original version or the song.

Not bothered bout autotuning. sounds good on the studio songs.:thumb:

F**in insane guitarist and songwriter as has alredy been said

Drummer is fukkin insanely good

I dont know much about exactly how one should scream, but im sure if experts say hes fu*kin up his voice then i agree, he should rectify that.

I hate emo's with a fuk*in passion too, for the emo fuk*a who dissed metal. and i'm not keen on heafy's hair not that it's relevant to his crazily gr8 musique.

Going to see Trivvers at the Lemon Grove in Exeter in March as it sez on the back of my hoody:thumb:

^ Nice that should be awsome, hope they come to Australia at some point. Yeah Trav's a fairly good drummer isn't he, i heard he's only 19 or 20 which is scary because that guys got some talent. Although me and my drummer reckon he looks hilarious playing drums because his posture is just to ... good haha, can't have a straight back and play thrash beats :smash:

I just saw this band called Silent Civilian at the Whiskey in Hollywood, CA. The lead singer looked exactly like a chunkier version of Matt Heafy. He even did some of the same facial expressions.

Wow a Matt Heafy impersonater...you all have everything in Cali huh?

I want my band to do a Trivium cover...but I'm not sure if I can handle Guitar
and Vocals...

anyone else tried?

Yeah i tried like light to the flies, my mind basically said wtf once i started trying to sing and do the verse riff, so hard to keep those 2 timings together, baffeles me how he does it.

Dying in your arm's would be really easy though, and if you have a good back up singer you'd both have a lot of fun with it :thumb:

My band play pull harder on the strings of your martyr and like light to the flies, the first time i played and sang/screamed pull harder i nearly fainted, you really need to concentrate on breathing, more than i realised

I found it hard to coordinate the muting on my first attempt at Light to Flies when doing vocals at the same time. But with practice it's fine. Luckily with the screaming you at least have very little to worry about going out of tune.

Well, i remember last year they were saying that there keen to come to Australia and they want to try and get over here by the end of year or early 2006. I guess there just too busy. They should be here some time this year though. Probably to tour for the new album that there going to release. Oh yeah, and where did u hear that Heafy's ditching the screaming? That would suck. That would probably mean they will just become more commercial and emo and just plain gay.

Why Trivium, why? Of all the songs on Ascendency you have to pick by far the worst song for your next single.
I guess Dying In Your Arms is probably going to appeal to all the emo kids out there so I can understand why they're doing it I suppose.

I don't think so actually, I'm sure I read in an interview that the new album will be more influenced by bands such as Dream Theater.

I don't know if this has been discussed, but have any of you seen the new YOung Guitar with these guys in it?
I only bought if for Alexi but I wasn't impressed by anything off the DVD.
Alexi wasn't playing to great, neither were Trivium and that Malmsteen wannabe had bad tone and was rather annoying with the Amin shred crap.

...trivium is awesome for their age...i recon they'll definatley go far...i love the technicality of their songs ...and their guitar solo's are orgasmic :naughty: ...not that i'm a guitarist or anything(drummer actually)... travis is definatley one of my top 5 drummers our bands just started learning 'Like Light To Flies' like some of the others on this thread...it's a working progress but its an :thumb: song to jam

I am actually looking forward to the new album, it should be good... musically, as I understand, Matt Heafy can't sing... or scream for that matter... in all seriousness he should drop his egomania and they should find a singer that doesn't suck, then they could have good music and vocals, but it's not very productive to complain about impossibilities such as Matt Heafy no longer being an egomaniac.

Thumbs up....

...Until that twat starts singing. He does not have the voice for that screaming, kind of like most other bands in that genre. If he had a deeper voice it would sound more agressive, therefore in this case, better. Kind of like a Phil Anselmo voice.

Indeed. The entire album kills untill that track, then the mood just drops right off.

Our band also play Pull Harder, although we are without a singer at the moment, so it's just instrumental.

They have alot of potential. Matt Heafy should just play rymthm guitar and stop singing though. His death vocals and clear vocals are both below average.

That solo in gunshot to the head...... Nothing better than a dualing solo.
