nice post, wanderer. glad you enjoyed yourself at both events. i catch the ITA clips on youtube. and thanks for those links. i'll be checking them out.
so far as apple pie and broken arrow are concerned we shall expect full reports on the show tonite.
i also want to remind you both and anyone else going to a gig that you ticket is a membership in The Who's online fan club which includes the "Squeeze Box" media player with a ton of content and more to be added. its free, the only catch being you need a credit or debit card to join because after a year its not free anymore and the card is auto billed unless you cancel in time. so make sure to mark the date and cancel in time!
you need a "promo code" to join. one you were supposed to get with your ticket. if you didn't get one just folllow the steps and they'll send you one, they also have an active message board full of Who fanatics. i have eight posts and the fanboyism is rampant (they even defend Its Hard!) but i'm working my way through it. nice diversion when this thread isn't active and i feel like talkin' some Who :)

I wasn't at shows, I just posted peoples reviews here and I would never give give credit card info to 'The Who's online fan club' considering what they do with it... that whole "fan club, we need credit card even if you have the promo code in order to join the site' is ****ed up system in order collcet credit card information and pass it around...
and there's already very good (best) messageboard for The Who.
Organized and moderated well.

Why wouldn't one defend It's Hard. Has few great classic songs that are way better than anything on upcoming record, minus perhaps God speaks of Marty Robbins and 2000 Years.

your link doesn't work, wanderer. and i don't care about giving my CC info. i do it all the time. i don't think anything sinister is going on at The Who's official website. i like the video (especially the live footage and tour stuff) and the most up to date news and reviews and setlists and stuff.
Its Hard is obviously mostly shi.t. sorry, but true. and you know that pete's solo work at that time was far superior. And I wish you would name me some songs off Its Hard that are "way better" then Endless Wire, Man In A Purple Dress, We've Got A Hit, Tea & Theatre, Mirror Door, Mike Post Theme, etc....i can go on and on. Cry If You Want and Eminence Front are just as good. But no more. And while their are maybe 3 more halfway decent recordings on the album, the rest is mostly crap.

sorry but true, your mentioned EF, CIYW are already better than all the new stuff combined minus Marty Robbins/2000 Years unless of course they are ruined by Roger doing the "singing" (mostly pretty flat barking these days. shame that Townshend waited too long)...
besides comparing to It's Hard is ridiculous, if one wants to do comparisons then it should really be done to previous Townshend record and truth is except couple songs new stuff doesn't come even close to that either, mainly because Pete has to try accomodite Roger hence songs like Uncerain Girl aren't on the record evetough it is clearly superior song that most tracks on the new record.

In 2003 Townshend received a police caution after acknowledging a solitary paid access of what was reported to be a child pornography website in 1999. He claimed in the press and on his website to have been engaged in research for "A Different Bomb" (a now abandoned book based on an anti-child pornography essay published on his website) and his autobiography. He was added to the British list of registered sex offenders for five years after police confiscated 14 of his computers and found no child pornography.

nope, sorry dude. not true at all. I have ears, i know enough about music and songwriting to know those two songs are not better then the entire new album "combined". thats silly. the new album is good, it is The Who, and everyone should just get used to it. :smash:
thanks for fixing that link info....

yeah. i tried to bring that up as a topic of conversation here a long time ago when someone on the board used it against pete. he was vindicated, and as you can see no CP was found in his possesion or on any of his 14 computers at home, in studio, or his offices. these were computers that were offically his and he had plenty of time after his initial access to download, etc...before the cops busted him some time later. so he is in the clear. completely. still very unfortunate. and really stupid to make him a "registered sex offender" after one brief visit to a website. using his CC for furthur access is what really did him in. perhaps a mistake, but hardly a serious crime, IMO.
Ephemeral

Yeah, I just thought it was kind of gay that he's now a registered sex offender. That position belongs to Uncle Ernie and Ivor the Engine Driver. >: (

I've started to listen to The Who a lot after a pretty lengthy hiatus. Listened to Q the other day and now it's Tommy's turn. Last Thursday, I saw Almost Famous, and when they played Sparks I realized that I haven't listened to Tommy in forever. So I need to fix that now. And it's amazing.

Okay so I saw the Who last night. I don't wanna type anything huge, mostly because the setlist was pretty reminiscent of all the others, still it was an amazing show.
Can't Explain and the Seeker starting off the evening and really got the crowd going with Pete's crazy windmills and such. They played alot of new stuff throughout the evening which I thought was pretty solid. I also really liked how well the EP flowed live, very well done. I was especially impressed with a song written about that spiritual advisor who's name escapes me right now, but you'll know who it was. It was a really chilled out song with the videos monitors showing videos of waves and oceans etc. SPeaking of the monitors they had some really cool stuff up there, much better than I'd expected. When they werent showing old footage of the band they usually had crazy trippy/cool animations and videos happening which were well done.
Highlights-Pete's Windmills, Roger's mic swinging, Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba, My Generation, Who are You, The Tommy set (I was so excited they played Sparks). The whole thing was amazing though.
Only thing I wish was abit better was for awhile during Sparks I couldn't really hear the punishing bassline. Which I like the best part. Well I could hear it but not as well as I'd like to.
oh yeah, I loved moe. too, I thought they had some really cool jams, and they changed variation often. They only thing is there lyrics werent great but who cares? They were awesome at playing, especially Rob, the bassist.
Also the performance was filmed and recorded for a DVD/CD and my buddy who also went to the show, floor seats (luck bastard) is gonna order it. So I'm totally gonna burn that off him.
I know I didnt cover shiiit in this so if anyone has any concert questions please ask. :)

10-01-2006, 08:48 PM
Sounds awesome. I wish I could have seen them when they came here. And the bass is the best part about Sparks! But I suppose it can't be quite the same without John. Seriously, though the bassline carries that song. If I ever need something to pump me up, Sparks always does the trick. Especially the Live at Leeds version.

As for converting from FLAC, I'd recomend downloading foobar2000. You can add the FLAC files, and simply right click>>convert>>convert to, then pick your codec (use mp3 or I'll kill you) you can set up the kbps by clicking on the "..." button.

Well lots of the stuff on torrents can be found in mp3. There's still a lot of it that can't, but I can find some stuff. For instance, sugarmegs probably has 15+ Who shows including the Amsterdam one. If I understood how torrents worked, then I'd use them, but they kind of confuse the hell out of me.

They put on a pretty good show tonight. Roger was in good voice, Pete had lots of energy, and the opening act wasn't bad either.
Pete was having some guitar/amp issues. It's funny though how they've been around so long that something like that doesn't even phase them anymore. He just fixed the problem then they picked up right where they left off.

Inward Eye. I'm pretty sure they're from Winnipeg so I doubt they'll be opening for them anywhere else. They were decent though. Entertaining at the very least.
It was funny, after having amp issues a second time, Pete disappeared for a minute and then came back and said, "I just had to tell him (the sound guy I guess) off."

i've read on the other board the shows are very good. new tunes (make sure to listen to Wire And Glass before you go) old tunes, all Who. the reviews for the shows are good. the singles It's Not Enough and Tea And Theater have come in at my music service and they sound much better then the leaked versions i linked here not long ago. pete has done a good job with producing and mixing. surprisingly modern production. might be the best sounding Who recordings ever. and Its Not Enough does grow on you. also advance word on the album is very good, with a few very positive reviews already in.
i also saw a live performance of Tea And Theater at the fan site from the other night and its very affecting, with just pete and rog performing. they close the entire show with it. it's reflective, relevant, and somewhat touching. i'm sure when you go see them it will be no less.

I would say the same thing about Zak. He's a very good drummer that doesn't get much recognition because everyone immediately draws their attention to Pete and Roger (rightfully so, but still). Very talented rhythm section still with the Who though.
Broken Arrow
10-05-2006, 10:34 PM
I found that Zak kept everything solid but not flashy or lead-like, like Keith's. Is this because he doesn't want to copy Moon?
Lunch
10-05-2006, 10:38 PM
I would say there might be some of that involved, also there's the other aspect of him not wanting to steal the spotlight from Pete and Roger. I just think it's an awkward spot to fill in for a dead amazing member of a rock powerhouse like the Who. Both Zak and Pino deliver without trying to overdo it, which is great.
And judging from what I've heard from Zak, he may not be all over the kit all the time like Moon, but he does have some tasteful fills and clearly some ability.
Broken Arrow
10-05-2006, 10:42 PM
Yeah, he definetly has the ability, and showed it. It just seem a little bit....whats the word...subdued? But yes. It's probably because what you said.
Also there was a track on Wire and Glass where Simon plays Mandolin. Anyone know the name of it?
robo2448

I Can't Explain
Anyway Anyhow Anywhere
Black Widows Eyes
Who Are You
Behind Blue Eyes
Sound Round
Pick Up The Peace
Unholy Trinity
Endless Wire
We Got A Hit
Dream Come True
Mirror Door

ah **** i can't remember right now... really good show though. The sound from where I was sitting (right by the sound mixers hehehe) was pretty decent, but the bass guitar could have been a little louder. I nearly creamed my pants when they came on for the encore, and did Pinball Wizard=>Amazing Journey=>Parts of Overtures=>Sparks etc. Then we got them to come back out after.
I think I saw Julianne (blue3) on my way back down the stairs after doing a pee pee =]

They definetly sounded like The Who. They are the only ones in the world that can :p
Pete's playing was great, and Rogers voice was in really good shape. They looked like they were having a hell of a time too, in typical Who fashion.

In the A&E section of my Newspaper today, they had a huge 3-4 page thing on the Who. The concert, the new CD review, local musician's opinion on the whole thing. It was really cool.
They were the cover story as well.
On the second page of the article there was a picture captioned 'The Glory Days' which has an awesome stage shot of them circa Who's Next (judging by the facial hair and Keith's set).

alright. here is a fan review of the Edmonton show that someone posted at the band site. the reason i'm posting it is because pete has been having rig problems the entire tour despite using one of the top guitar techs in the business. and apparently last night it almost did him in
This was a mind blowing concert, and almost literally for Pete Townshend who may have been nearly zapped to oblivion.
Townshend was having problems with his equipment all night. He was constantly harrasing the tech crew about this and that. And then during Won't Get Fooled Again he was adjusting something on one of his amps - and ZAP! Townshend at first looked at his hand and then staggered to the back of the stage. Once there he appeared to be collapsing, but managed to stay upright with the help of the crew. Meanwhile, the rest of the band looked on in horror. It was obvious they were considering stopping the show. However, within a minute Townshend stumbled back and finished the song. The incident, perhaps oddly seemed to re-energize him as he played the rest of the song like a wild demon.
Despite Townshend's equipment problems the Edmonton concert - close to a sell out - was fantastic, mainly because Townshend was on fire all night, perhaps not happy with his so-so performance the night before.
The band opened with I Can't Explain, The Seeker and AAA. And then it was Fragments - the one song on the new CD I am still struggling with. The rest of the set list was pretty much the same as Calgary's except Unholy Trinity was dropped. The band opted to play a gorgeous version of Really Good Looking Boy in Edmonton.
One of the advantages for the band in Edmonton was the crowd. Unlike Calgary, they were pretty much into the show right from the start. But like Calgary the crowd began to explode at the start of Baba O'Reilly, became unglued during another great rendition of My Generation and possitively out of their minds during Won't Get Fooled Again - even during Townshend's trials with his equipment.
Daltrey had some problems tonight. He had trouble handling the higher registers of Who Are You, and I think he was very much aware of Townshend's equipment problems.
Pino was again great. I took special notice of his beautiful fret work during the six-song set of Wire & Glass.
The crowd was appreciative of the new material, especially once again for Man in a Purple Dress. All and all, a great show.

Yeah, I was kind of pissed that they didn't do anything off Quadrophenia, but their Tommy set made up for it.
He didn't have any amp problems here, but Roger complained about the pot saying that he'd love to join them in a toot, but he's now allergic to it and it was affecting his performance. Pete then shouted some anti-drug slogan and I lol'd.
Pete was making cracks all night, my favorite one being "The last time we played here was 1967 and 1968. It was at the corral, in a big pile of cow ****."
JohnXDoe
10-07-2006, 05:59 PM
pete is a pisser. funny guy. the Quad stuff has been lost to the new stuff. which is fine with me. fact of the matter is in recent years they have played for the most part Drowned, 5:15, and Love Reign O'er Me. in that order at the same place in the set. pretty predictible. sometimes they would replace Drowned with The Punk And The Godfather (that would be awesome even on its own) or Sea And Sand. and The Real Me hasn't been performed since john died. i would like to hear different songs from Quad. not likely...

^ Damn that is SWEET! You know i'm getting myself one. I might get an Irvine Meadows DVD, too. The show i went to in 2002. It was only the second one with Pino. Good gig. Probably just get the DVD. And that's a great deal.
So Jeff, a little more about the gig, perhaps? Were you completely satisfied? I read Pete was again having big problems with his rig and it affected his playing sometimes. Did you notice? How was Zak, etc....

Ephemeral
10-08-2006, 06:40 PM
He didn't have any problems with his rig that I know of when they played here, although I know that he had major problems in Edmonton, and also almost collapsed.
I had seen Pelican just the night before, and maybe it isn't really fair to draw a comparison between the two, but that's what I did. When put next to the act that I had seen the previous night, The Who did come up a little short, but not by much. The new group is still really strong, and tight as a musical unit, and each musician was really playing hard.
The thing that bothered me about the show is that most of the time the stuff playing up on the screens really stole the show away from the actuall performers. I think alot of people felt that.
Still an explosive live act, they didn't dissapoint me at all. For their age they really did put on an excellent show. Roger's voice obviously isn't as good as it used to be though, and it showed.
Maybe I'm just a little sad that they didn't play anything off Quadrophenia, but meh.
Their new stuff really was the best part of the show for me. I've listened to the Wire and Glass EP for hours, and it sounded great live.

I don't think he had huge rig problems, cause I didn't notice. And he almost collapsed in Edmonton? WTF? I didn't know Roger was allergic to pot, but everyone was still smoking it anyway. Some guy beside me actually left for awhile to smoke outside and came back.

and its great new material. he didn't even pay it lip service. what an as.s. he complains they did twelve new songs (some of which were the abbreviated Wire And Glass songs) and if they hadn't he would of called them a washed up oldies act, i'm sure. and then he quotes that imbecile who said they were always bad and couldn't play their instruments and people wanted to hear Hermans Hermits instead back in the day when they toured together.
of course the idiot didn't mention The Who were opening for Hermans Hermits so of course everyone hated them. and that The Who came out onstage with people expecting Herman and what they got was this offensively loud band breaking up the stage instead. The Who kicked as.s on that tour. and they loved being hated. they thought it was funny. poor Hermits following the 'orrible 'OO. that must of been beautiful and a lol...

Here's all the pictures I took of the show. Sorry, its a 6 year old digital camera with no zoom lens, but I'm more then happy I got these. Most of them were of the Tommy encore, and I'll explain why a bunch at the end are blurry as hell. And the pictures don't show it, but we were closer then it appears. Oh, and they're in backward order.
So we get there (my dad and I). The opening band (Rose Hill Drive I think their name is) did about 5-6 songs, and I liked them. They were a good band, got a positive response. I'm sure they knew no one was there to see them, but they did feel honored playing the same stage as The Who.
So then the stage is readied for the Who. And finally, Pete walks on, spotlight on him. The whole crowd goes in an uproar. And as do I. While Roger walks on, it finally hit me.....holy ****, they're real! They ARE REAL, AND THEY ARE RIGHT THERE! Just a basketball court away! I started flipping out. The rest of the band came on, and Pete launched Can't Explain. Roger launched his mic in every which way. I was standing and going ballistic. During the solo, Pete did two quick windmills, and the crowd went crazy, as Tommy hit....oh, sorry :P Yeah, but a huge cheer happened during those first windmills.
Then The Seeker and Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere. My memory is kinda blurred about the order, but I'm sure its the same as the last couple of gigs. During the mini-opera, people began sitting down (those lame bastards) but I stood up for as long as I could until my dad thought it would be best that I sit down so I wouldn't block everybody behind me.
Right as Behind Blue Eyes started up, some chic behind me dropped her keys into my seat, and demanded I search for them WHILE THE MUSIC WAS STARTING! I came to watch the ****ing Who, not find some keys. Luckily, it took me 2 seconds, but I was pissed.
The guy running the pre-recorded tracks started up what was Eminence Front, but Pete had him cut it out so he could introduce the band. Speaking of which, they were all amazing. Zak was ****ing awesome. Pino did good. Simon did some good backup vocal work (and it was his birthday). Mr. Texan man did his thing. So it was good. Roger hit every note all throughout. Pete was moving around and windmilling and did the occasional scissor-kick jump! :) I can't believe these guys are in their 60s. More like my dad in his late 40s.
I know I'm going kinda out of order with the music. But Baba was right after the mini-opera, and everyone went berserk. Especially when the guitar came in. And EVERYBODY sang along to the bridge. Man, more audience volume than Pete! Amazing. And more cheers when the harmonica was whipped out.
Real Good Looking Boy I really liked. I never heard the song before, but I really liked it. I like nice homely C Major songs! Heh....
Then came Won't Get Fooled Again. Occasionally I felt Zak slip slightly out of time with the backing track, but he quickly recovered. It was kind of lacking energy in the beginning (I'm sure they were tired) but built up continually until the break. And then Zak's drum intro thing started, and I began freaking out (I'm a drummer, and it was cool, and yeah). I wanted to get a photo of the scream, but I wanted to enjoy the moment rather than process it. And OH MY GOD! I screamed so loud, as well as many others in the crowd. "Meet the old Boss, same as the old Boss" **** yes. Good times, I can't explain. Heh.
So they walk off, and I immediately gun it to rush the floor for the encore. I got to the bottom of the stairs, but there was like two people watching it, so I huddled myself into a row. Then came up the Tommy medley (which is, I'm sure you all know, my favorite album). Pinball Wizard came on, and I was like "OMG pictures!" Half of my pictures were of the encore I'm sure
The person I was right next to sucked. It was some teenager (high school age I'm guessing) with his girlfriend, and he was slightly excited for Pinball Wizard, but not any of the other songs (probably one of those shallow wannabe poser CR kids). And they kept kissing each other. MY GOD! Even if I dated the hottest chic in the world, I WOULD NOT WANT TO KISS HER AT A WHO CONCERT! The Who deserve all my attention, not some broad ;) . Anyways, the kid kept looking back at me because I was screaming and going insane and dancing and enjoying the music! Heh, stupid loser. Anyways, Amazing Journey was cool, but Sparks was so ****ing awesome! It probably rocked harder than anything else that night. It was also like 8 minutes long. Roger broke a tambourine.
Then came the moment I was waiting for. Roger picked up the mic, Pete strummed an Ebmaj7 chord, and Roger sings "See Me!" I was in a trance. I got several pictures of that as I reverred in my favorite song. Someone whipped out a lighter (which I wish I had). Then the interlude into Listening to You, and I jumped so high and pumped my fist high into the air to salute the Gods of Rock. I began singing along so loudly and dancing so hard! Some drunk guy came down and kept on wanting to sing to me and kept on turning me around, but we just jumped up and down and sang along and it was glorious. One of the most beautiful, greatest moments of my life. And I remember very little of it, but my god I haven't been this happy in so long. it was pure bliss! Unfortunately, I never stood still for all the bazillion shots I took, so they're all pointing which way and blurry. But still.....man.....yeah.
They get done, and the two break out into Tea and Theatre. It was a beautiful way to end the evening. When they sang the line with "Its just the two of us" or whatever the line is, the audience cheered. You will always be with us, John and Keith. Always.
And then Pete gave us his greatest thanks, and they walked off. Not until I exclaimed "Guys, you will NEVER grow old!"

The 52$ tix are sold out for the Colorado show, the least expensive ones are the 100 doller ones. :(

If its a slow sale or all aren't sold they have been lowering prices and giving special deals. So stay alert for those. At one concert they closed an entire section for lack of sales and the people who bought tickets for it got to go down front. Not to say the tour isn't doing well. Its doing very well. But some cities better then others and they have been making an attempt to get every ticket sold they can. One city had cheap seats going for $25 a cuople of days before the show. So like I said, keep your eyes and ears open...

The band decided not to take corporate sponsorship for the tour so that is one of the reasons for the higher tix prices. Also their promoter convinced them older fans would be able to afford the tickets, being they are people with jobs and what not. Meaning just older and established. Which unfortunately means some fans have to settle for cheaper seats. I think the prices are $202, $100, $77, and $57. Not bad, but not great. When I saw them in 2002 I paid $35 for about the same position I have now. In 2004 I paid $45.
This is the last go around so I think its ok. I know Pete is set, but Roger needs to make some money. As do the other musicians. And for those who care to everybody who buys a ticket is an automatic member in thewhotour.com. (credit/debit card required) Which is a real good site for fans like us. I just saw I Can't Explain and some interesting footage from Edmonton there. So thats a bonus. Plus The Who are giving much money to charity and funding various sales and auctions for charity with the tour money. So all in a days work with the somewhat high ticket prices, I would say...

twice. October 18, 2002 and November 5, 2005. Plus I saw Ringo on August 27, 2001.
But The Who seriously owned it. I planned on getting floor seats, but the moment the website went up they were already sold out. I had just got a job so $100 wasn't that big of an issue, I easily make that in two days (or did, until I got fired).
Anybody figure out how to link sub-albums in a photo bucket?

Here is something Pete said in an interview a few weeks ago. I suppose the truth is kind of tragic and sad:
Late THE WHO rocker JOHN ENTWISTLE died because he continued living "high" into middle age, according to his surviving bandmate PETE TOWNSHEND.
Townshend claims he and frontman ROGER DALTREY found it impossible to curb Entwistle's appetite for partying and drugs, because the bassist insisted he would prefer to die than give up his rock 'n' roll lifestyle.
Townshend says, "What happened with John was that he got used to living high, and his money supply was cut off."
"In the end, when Roger came to me and said, 'Listen, we've got to help John, let's try to train him to live less high,' we couldn't do that.
"And as we trained him to live less high, he died. He didn't want to live less high. He preferred to be dead, in a sense." Entwistle died in June 2002 from a heart attack after taking cocaine in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I've never paid more than the cheapest seats for a show. It's still great. Because when you factor in ticketmaster's gay charges, cost of a shirt, train tickets, it all adds up to a ton of money.

Here is a just released Pete interview with some magazine:
The Who have been credited with a number of rock'n'roll innovations, from aggressive proto-punk sounds and behavior to synthesizer usage and stadium-scope spectacle. Yet songwriter Pete Townshend's most lasting creation may be the combination of storytelling and music christened, with tongue firmly in cheek, the rock opera, a format that has recently experienced a second wave of popularity through albums by the Streets, the Fiery Furnaces, and R. Kelly. Now down to Townshend and singer Roger Daltrey, the Who's latest comeback record, Endless Wire, avoids the play-it-safe habits of the band's gray-templed peers by returning to musical narratives, the second half dominated by the "mini-opera" Wire & Glass. The proudly computer-literate Townshend (he made a point of mentioning that Pitchfork is on his MyGoogle newspaper) and I spoke over e-mail about rock operas past and present.
Pitchfork: What has drawn you back toward the idea of musical narratives at this juncture in your career?
Pete Townshend: I have never stopped doing it-- if I have appeared to stray from the story, the story has not changed. I write about the trauma, or the effect of it, visited on my generation since the last war, [which was] caused by the denial of older generations. The new story is, like the first mini-opera ("A Quick One"), Tommy, and Quadrophenia, set in a neighborhood where young people look for answers and their parents seem unable to help. So they look to art, to music, to spirituality, to congregation, and finally to the endless wire for solutions. What happened? Why won't they talk about it? Should we fight back at our enemies today or become supreme and pacifist liberals? Do we even matter? Does what we do or say make any difference?
Pitchfork: How does the Wire & Glass mini-opera connect back to previous Who or Pete Townshend rock operas?
PT: It is connected specifically to Lifehouse, because the three members of the band Glass in the opera want to revive Ray High's lost dream to join everyone together using music in a huge internet concert event. It is connected too to Psychoderelict, a solo album for me in 1993, because this d0cumented Ray High's descent and failure to realize his dream.
Pitchfork: Wire & Glass is intended to be a companion to your novella The Boy Who Heard Music; did you always intend this story to be presented in both written and musical formats?
PT: It started as a radio play that I hope to serialize on the internet using my live streaming system at my studio (now called TowserTV). I couldn't quite crack that, so I serialized it on a blog instead as a regular text piece. I think The Boy Who Heard Music has enough color and story to work as a small theatre piece with music, and parts of it are visionary and screwy enough to make a great Las Vegas Circus Ballet. But the songs are what is most important, and each one might make a cool animation film.
Pitchfork: Why did you decide to do this mini-opera as part of a Who album, rather than as a solo record? What does Daltrey's participation add to the project?
PT: I almost fancy making a solo record now I've done one for the Who, but if this hadn't worked for the Who I would not have released it is a solo record. Roger's input is that of editor and interpreter-- then once ideas are fashioned he's a very powerful part of the delivery engine we call the Who. No better way to get a good idea out to the world.
Pitchfork: The promotional materials describe Wire & Glass as being the music composed "so far" for your novella. Can we expect a more complete rock opera in the future? If so, why did you decide to release this "mini-opera" in an incomplete state?
PT: I went on to add another four songs to the album, and there are a few more I could add if there was any kind of second life for the story, but I am delighted to have the story come out this way. I wanted the incomplete mini-opera released so that the Who would at least have some music released before we started our European tour.
Pitchfork: Pardon me if I'm conflating you with your characters, but The Boy Who Heard Music features an aging rock star who appears to have advice to relate to a young band on the road to stardom. At one point in the promotional notes, you say, "He rues the fact that the rock industry seems unable to change." What message are you trying to convey to young musicians in the industry today?
PT: You are maybe drawing me toward my characters too much, but that is what happens. I always think John Updike must be a little sex mad. He probably isn't. Ray High has no advice to give, only caution. In fact he is not available to the band. He is watching them from the ether, he is meditating and can see the way they come together, and grow up, and become smashed by the business the way he did. It is in that respect that Ray believes the rock industry cannot change-- it cannot save its own. But in reality we are beginning to save our own. We have older survivors who can speak to younger ones about why it isn't necessary to die.
Pitchfork: Musical narratives have been making a comeback lately, from artists like the Fiery Furnaces, the Streets, R. Kelly, and Pedro the Lion. Have you heard any of these story-records, and if so, what do you think about what they've done with the format?
PT: I know about the Streets. Fantastic. I will check out the others immediately.
Pitchfork: Can you explain what the "Method" process is, and how it has evolved since the days of the original Lifehouse project?
PT: It is a realization of the Lifehouse Method in the original fiction. Today it is possible to do what in 1971 I could only dream about. I have a website prepared, you visit it, enter some data, and get tailor-made music back. Your music, and that of everyone who visits the site, will blend together. In the original story there was a VR thread as well, that has become less interesting to me now.
Pitchfork: What is it about the Lifehouse project that has brought you back to it multiple times in your career?
PT: Even though I say so myself it was a magnificent revelation of prescience. I predicted something of the future. However, the foundation for the idea was instilled in me at art school in 1961 by Roy Ascott and his Foundation Team. They first introduced me to words like cybernetics and semiotics when the only computers in the world were as big as aircraft carriers. Look for Henry Silverman in The Boy Who Heard Music. This character is loosely based on Harold Cohen, the inventor of the fine art painting robot called AARON. Harold was one of the teachers on Roy Ascott's course. These were quite brilliant, far-sighted men.
Pitchfork: You seem to be fascinated by the internet, and yet Wire & Glass contains a vision of the future "strangled by wire and communications." Are you pessimistic or optimistic about the spread of technology in modern society?
PT: I am not pessimistic or optimistic. We will make of this what we will. It is a tool not an end. We are the receivers, we need to divide time, and to live in the moment such division allows us. We cannot be pure in any other way living in the materialist west. That's why music is so vital to us I think.
Pitchfork: How do you feel that the internet has impacted the music industry? Has it changed your approach to making or distributing music?
PT: Only slightly. It has not delivered all of its promise. Yes, we can get our music to our audience, but as yet we have not persuaded them to pay the way they do when they come see us play live. Turning something into low resolution data does seem to make it worth less in the modern world. Some girl I know told me that all cars could be run on water, only the man who invented the process was "assassinated" by the petrochemical people. Water is more precious than oil. Both are more precious than music. Music won't heat a house or help a plant to grow.
Pitchfork: The story of Wire & Glass appears to contain a lot of religious imagery and themes. How have your feelings on religion changed since Tommy, when religion (of the organized sort, at least) was largely portrayed in a negative light?
PT: I respect those who follow religious routes only if they seem to me to be morally proper and in accord with the modern world. Religion seems to me like vapour on the ocean that is my idea of who and what God is. Not bad vapour, just not very substantial.

Yeah Pete is something. I reviewed the Qudrophenia Live DVD for sputnik a couple days ago and I was struck how he alternately makes things more complicated then they are and also makes complcated things simple. He really is quite an incredible artist. My music service just got all his solo stuff. And I do mean all of it. Except the Lifehouse project series. But they got his collection of demos, the Scoop series. And his demos are amazing. Some sound nearly as good as The Who recordings. And others are experimental to some extent. Some are full band arrangements with full instumentation, Pete playing everything including drums. And he's good. Keyboards, bass, you name it. Long Live Rock sounds like Long Live Rock. You Better You Bet, as well. Really cool...

I'm gonna rep everyone with over 20 posts in this thread starting tonight. Thats quite a bit so i'll run out before i'm done. But we've all done our part to keep this thread going and its been a great thing for R&M I think.
Second leg of the tour starts in Los Angeles on the 4th and I'm going on the 5th. I hear at the fan site changes are being made to the setlist. Could be more new stuff played. And different new stuff, as the album comes out just five days before. I've read they may also dump some older stuff in favor of different older stuff. Which would be great. We'll see. Ought to be interesting.
Oh, looks like an SNL appearance as well as Jimmy Kimmel, etc...might be coming up. Those kinds of things. So keep a look out...

ok I posted this at sputmik in the news comments section of a story someone posted. i thought it was worthy enough to report here, also:
I have heard samples from all songs on the album. Wire And Glass is included in its entirety. The record sounds great. Modern. The various internet low bandwidth streams do it no justice. Many of the songs are acoustic flavored. If you know The Who you know most of their records since Tommy were all different from one another yet ultimately still The Who. Expect no different from this album. Some of it sounds very familiar. Some of it striking in its simplicity and raw emotion. Lots of mid tempo stuff. There are experimental touches. Expect The Who, but also the unexpected. Meet the new boss, not quite the same as the old boss....

Ahh..... The Who.
A young fellow, the Who is. He wanders about the forests of Teenage Wasteland ever so merrily. The days are always filled with bright hues and beautiful flowers. No, not one day with a cloud, no!
However, one fine evening the Who encountered a problem, "What am I going to wear to the annual Pumpkin Festival?!". He certainly not a clue! Soon enough, the grand old Pinball Wizard appeared in his doorway, with a gentle breeze and a stern look on his face. He spoke,
"Dear, dear Who, what are you to do?
You've got no clothes for the evening's ball
Will you ever go through?
Dear, dear who, how will we fix this soon?
A costume will be sewn with my magical magic
From the streets of Timbuktu"
And as you may expect, this made the Who very joyous, and took the Pinball Wizard by the hand and did a merry dance around the room's table. After a quick tea and toast, the wizard had to make his way to a faroff city of Qurotjendur. At the foot of the door he conjured up the costume and set it in a box. This made the Who doubleplus merry!
He put the fresh outfit on, which was a bright sort of blue with many other colors and trims, realizing out loud that this bargain was, in fact, the best he ever had. Before the night's ceremonies, The Who made a point to show this recent acquired item to his favorite cat, Not Gandalf From Lord of the Rings, and equally pleasant cat who loved to purr and roll around. It was much amused by his outfit, slyly saying,
"Why, that outfit is ****ing horrible. Did you steal it from a dead hooker?".
However odd this seemed, it did not prevent the Who from going to the night's Pumpkin Festival. He had much mead and bread, fruits and vegetables, and plenty of sweetening sweethings! Oh, how his tummy was plump and full. After stumbling home in a meading haze with some odd chunks of vomit, he finally realized..
"Didn't I read The Lord of the Rings once?"

I've listened to some samples again and I tihnk it sounds good. Advance word is good. Wire And Glass is included along with 3 songs in the middle that weren't included in the ealier release. Kind of disappointed that we won't get full versions of all those songs, although with the three new tunes thrown into the middle of the mini opera to complete it i think it'll be ok. We Got A Hit and the title cut (Endless Wire) will be included in full versions as bonus tracks, as they are to be singles. The band sounds mature. As if taking a final bow. Graceful, almost. Still explosive in places, tough in others, but thoughtful as well. I'm hoping for the best as the samples I've heard are extremely short and I know the entire songs go different places that I'm not hearing.

I've heard sources that Keith Moon was hugely inspired to play by Louie Belleson, another top notch and great big band/swing drummer. Louie was also the first player to popularize double bass drums, and both Moon and Ginger were inspired by him to apply it to their own setups.
Yeah, his over the top fills and playing could be more jazz influenced then any other style of music at the time. Look at the rest of the rock/pop world at this time. This is pre-Paice, Bonham, Peart, etc.

I feel like this should include their three albums before Tommy as well, they were very different records (although I guess A Quick One and Sell Out have some similarities) but all them made the Who the band they were.

Yes you are correct. I often forget to mention the early ones. And I don't listen to them often enough anymore. Although I listened to a Quick One a couple weeks ago. Which isn't reviewed for sputnik yet so I might do a real simple one for it today.
The new one sounds like The Who if they had never went away and stuff, IMO. From what I can hear and if you know what I mean? Pete has a song where his vocal is so strange. It sounds like he just relaxed and let his voice fall into a very deep tenor. And the expanded mini opera sounds like, well, a mini opera now that the other three or four songs have been added. At least from what I can gather from poorly streamed 30 second clips :-\

those were great. if i could i'd rep you for all the effort but i can't since i recently have already. :-/
the show looks good. i hope the crowd is good. an older audience can often times be quite mellow. at least that is my experience going to see older artists. and some can be downright irritating, seemingly forgetting what a R&R gig is supposed to be about as they call the babysitters on their cell phones and keep running to the concession stands for another beer during "boring songs". we'll see....

Yeah thats often times a thorn in my side when going to gigs by older artisits. Does this happen to all of us when we age? Hope not. Often times the crowd dosen't shout, scream, jump, or anything. No real excitement, I guess you couold say. Sort of understandable. But at least suit up and show up for the night...
...and then I've had the opposite problem (i've been to a lot of gigs) of the older folks trying to relive the glory of their f'd up youth for a couple of hours by getting too drunk or stupidly "wild" and disrupting the entire show with their moronic antics. I'm 26 so i'm sort of at an in between age. And the younger people can be stupid, too. But at least they are supposed to be. And more often then not they are really excited to be there and experience it right. So that's usually cool. Kids with their parents are usually cool to be around, as all parties seem to have a good time.
I'm going alone so I have my plans. I have an aisle seat. So if I get seated next to morons at least they will be to the right of me only and I won't be stuck between idiots. Plus I'm arriving a bit late because Nov 5th is my brother in laws birthday and we are getting together in the afternoon to celebrate with lunch, drinks, etc. So i'm literally racing to the Hollywood Bowl from Pasadena in the evening, rushing in, and taking my seat. Most likely just in time for The Who. And since I'm going alone moving down front may be an option, too. So that will be fun.
But I want no disruptions! This is THE WHO. Last time around. And I will not tolerate foolishness around me! :smash:
EDIT: yeah, those youtube vids are great. funny stuff. check out the Bell Boy one if you have time. When he goes into the Keith part its pretty amusing. And he actually does a good job with the song...

You know the drill. Click on Towser TV when you get there for a very good Swiss gig the band did in mid July. Full encore included. So watch it when you have time if you're going to watch the whole thing. It's looped so you never know what part you'll be coming in on.

I think I can do it at the Hollywood Bowl. I've been there many times and I have a way of worming my way around. :shifty:
I just finsihed watching the gig from Pete's site. I gotta recommend it. Its an outdoor gig. Cold night, great crowd. They are playing at the end of a street. Colorfully lit apartments on either side, people watching from their balconies. I enjoyed it a lot. Its mellow in the middle, but in a good way. And they do a great Naked Eye. And I love Mike Post Theme. Great song...

no. i went to a 2004 make up gig. after the show you linked and i think a couple of others (if any) they took some time off. i saw them in Irvine when they returned and then in 2004 at the Bowl. i think that was a small tour to do some things they had to cancel in 2002. obligations and what not...

For those who don't visit the review site, here is a news item I wrote and posted this morning:
Townshend Walks Out On Stern
Before it even started it was over. Promoting their new internet radio endeavor with a free two day preview, SIRIUS Satellite Radio this morning brought two of their major players together in Pete Townshend and Howard Stern, both of whom have exclusive stations on the channel, Stern with his daily morning show and special programming and Townshend with The Who Channel .
Arriving with surprise guest Roger Daltrey and girlfriend Rachel Fuller in tow Townshend walked out of the studio while still in the green room when Stern side kick Robin Quivers mentioned Townshend's 2002 arrest on child pornogaphy charges and went on to say he had "downloaded loads of it"and "gotten away with it", when in actuality Townshend was cleared on all charges excepting the "viewing of illegal child pornography" charge, which got him five years probation as a registered sex offender.
Fourteen of Mr. Townsehnd's computers were confiscated for the invistagation. No evidence of child pornography was found. Townshend accessed a child porn site in 1999 with his credit card while doing research for a paper he was writing on the easy availability of pornography and child pornography on the internet and its potentially damaging effects on society and the individual.
Howard Stern called the incident this morning "unfortunate" and personally apologized to Townshend on behalf of his crew. Robin Quivers also apologized saying she did not know the subject was "off limits" and was only going "by her notes." Roger Daltrey stuck around for the next hour and said Pete was completely justified in walking out and the subject could not be discussed regardless, as Townshend's probatation is still in effect. At the end of the interview Howard called himself and his staff "a bunch of stupid F*** ups", while Pete posted a blog at his website with the simple message of "Howard: Let's have lunch."

Pete wasn't unfortunately able to reach this kind of excellence in songwriting with this particular record. Hopefully he will give it another shot with better result. And shoud start with getting a "outside" producer :)

Okay, this is something that has always bothered me. Whenever they did one of John's songs live, it seems like Roger is always singing along with him. Not even singing a harmony, but singing the same notes. Gettings two singers to sing the same melody is way damn hard (harmonies are much easier, and sound much better) and occasionally they're out of tune with each other ever so slightly.
Despite that fact, though, whose decision was it so that Roger always sang? You can throw the argument that Roger didn't play an instrument so he might get bored when its not his song, but he never sings to Pete's songs.

Yeah that had to be a tough one. The Ox wasn't even in his grave yet, I don't think. They had to play the gig. They were ready. They just grabbed Pino and hoped for the best. Let us know how it turned out.

And I don't here that on many of John's live tunes. He pretty much handles them alone. Toward the end his voice was shot so roger pretty much picked things up for him, but other then that on tracks like My Wife, The Quiet One, Dangerous, Twist And Shout, I hear a lot of John.
Oh, and if any of you wondered why Roger seems mellower onstage these days, seems lost, and has trouble swinging that mic (its funny when he does the "baby twirl"these days) yesterday he said he had shoulder surgery recently and its just not happening. And the "allergic to pot" thing he says he's always enjoyed weed when he has smoked it but is allergic now. Last he smoked was three years ago and said it put him "flat on his back". Back in the day he said you would smoke a joint and "start to get high". He says the new one hit stuff is "dangerous". Gramps...

It was 4 days after he died. There is a memorial for him during the show, but I haven't gotten there yet. At the very beginning of the show, Pete and Roger gave eachother big hugs which was nice to see.
Also: I can't wait for Endless Wire. I have to cut down on my CD purchases though, and get a job. =(
Pete seems to be in high spirits for this show though, and even did a little comedy bit, and asked if he was in a testicle factory (refering to the balls on the roof of the bowl), and why people were smoking camomile, and why he had not had these reactions to camomile tea before. :p

saw it. yeah, it must of been bittersweet...pete is a funny guy....
you know its funny how pepple expect bandmates to be really close. i mean obviously John was loved, but they knew each other for forty years, spent years on the road, thousands of hours making music and half a lifetime and then some working together. no one was going to fall apart about his death. these are grown men with lives and families of their own. and i think Pete and Rog saw it coming. at 55 or whaterver and with an already shaky heart you just can't be stuffing coke up your nose and sleeping with hookers ( I read he had two that night) like you used to :(
great talent lost before his time...meh, i hope he enjoyed himself...

Well, listen to Heaven and Hell, the second half of each verse is dual Roger and John, wheras on the recording (yes there is a studio version) its just John. Same with Twist and Shout from Isle of Wight (but not later versions), and during Trick of the Light on the '89 tour.
Never during Boris though, or during the two Tommy songs. But it seems to be a good chunk. And there was never any double leads during Pete's parts. But your right about later on, with his voice getting shot. Its just even before then it was happening.

Well, listen to Heaven and Hell, the second half of each verse is dual Roger and John.
I always thought so! At first I disregarded it for a little glich in my cd player, but then I realized that there had to be two people singing.
The best part on Heaven and Hell is when Roger does his quasi-vocal solo (Heaven, Heaven...Heaven and Hell) towards the beginning of the breakdown, and the rest of the band is going crazy beneath him.

Here is the entire Howard Stern/Pete Townshend fiasco I posted news of on the previous page. They mention the crap two minutes in, go to some other stuff, mention more Pete crap, and then Roger comes on and the thing gets going. The entire thing is one hour eleven minutes and well worth your time to listen as you sit at your computer. Or whatever.. And if nothing else Roger is very entertaining.
