How late is The Who show tonight, I'm gonna watch uit du''hh ;)
K the report
first day, ai rrived at heathrow and went to my hostel ... If you cna call it a hostel it was damn ugly but it was really good situated near everything we needed. But we went to the shwo of Roger Waters ...
Well that was great the openerss were all good and Roger Waters was just mind blowing, amazing show, amazing hot weather and just great, DSOTM in t's entirely is just so good, bought a t- shirt there ... But I won't drag to long you wanna know about The Who ...
SO next day some things and The Who, I was in front(So I was with roger waters) and it was great again great openers. But then the who they kicked in and everybody was sining along, oew and almsot forgot, at the openers there were those giant ballons and me and a friend kicked 3 off them on the stage. But back to the who, they openend with can't explain which was great and they plaed all hits, one new song, Mike Post, was also nice, but the fun started during My Generation, the crow went nuts pits everywhere etc etc, and then won't get fooled again ti was fighting to stay at fornt so I couldn't enjoy the show that much, but it was fun in it's own way and all this pitting went trhough to the last song. The Who have a great team and a have a great show I say everyone see what's left of them, you won't regret it. And uhhm bought many cd's, POTC2 premiere was in town and have walked to almost every monument in london. :)

Sounds like a great time, Prince. I watched the gig on thewholive.tv replayed in full, as Pete wanted to make up for something that went wrong during the webcast. Oh, and I was wrong in my above post about the next few shows being played in their entirety for free. Just three or four songs, as I was mistaken but couldn't change or delete my post because of all the site problems the past few days.
I saw some pics of Hyde Park at the Pete website and I like the look of the stage set with the colorful screens. And pits at a Who gig? Fantastic! I to like Mike Post Theme. It's a good song. Mike Post I believe is known for writing musical scores of tv shows focused on middle age. So perhaps Pete is coming to terms with aging. And he did comment on how young the crowd was and how old The Who are at the gig. I think it's great the Who played a festival witha bunch of young bands and can still hold there own, musically and otherwise. And it's great to see people my age and younger embrace them.
Roger Waters I also enjoy. I much prefer Waters Floyd over any other, and The Wall and The Final Cut are among my favorite albums ever. I in fact consider them to be one work. Anyway, sounds like you had a great time at both gigs. Good deal, and it was good to hear back from you....
....thanks.....
I finally got "Who's Next"!. I really like it. All tracks are strong but "My Wife" to me is a filler. "Going Mobile" is cheesy but i really like it. Best tracks IMO are "Water", "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Pure and Easy", "The Song is Over", "Bargain" and "Going Mobile". Ive heard enough of "Behind Blue Eyes".
Well, My Wife is an Entwistle tune. I've never heard it as filler, and a live version will definitely change your mind. Going Mobile is exuberant, perhaps even a bit cheesy. But if you get further into The Who you will come to discover they can be quite eccentric (or cheesy) at times. It's just all part of what makes this band go. Glad you're enjoying them.

Who's Next is for noobs :thumb:
heh, just kidding. My Wife is a good song, but I feel its one of Entwistles weaker songs. 905, Trick of the Light, Heaven and Hell, Boris the Spider, Fiddle About are all better.

I like The Quiet One a lot. You, as well. And his stuff is the best thing about It's Hard along with a few Pete cuts. I also like Success Story and Trick Of The Light. I believe that one is his. But My Wife is still my fave. It's funny, and anyone who has ever f'ed up on a chick and has her pissed can relate. And live it just blows everything away. Thanks for the heads up about Pete on ITA....

I really wish they would do away with the "Tommy Encore". They had moved it into the set for a few gigs and I thinks it's better there.

Roger looks mad ugly in that pic.
Entwistle was a terriffic songwriter. His songs were never predictable, and had original chord changed. His black humor is what turns a lot of people of to his songs, but I feel without the quirky-ness they wouldn't be John songs anymore.

All this talk of John got me searching on my music service for some of his work and I've been enjoying "Who's The Bass Player: The Ox Anthology and two live albums available only for streaming. One is The King Bisquit Flower Hour Presents John Entwistle and the other is the 24 track "Left For Live" (Deluxe). The anthology set has a whopping 38 songs. :)
And yeah, that black humor comes through. "Peg Leg Peggy", lol. And his studio stuff is interesting. Especially his own versions of the material he wrote for The Who. Heaven And Hell is really different. And his singing voice was thin but pretty good, as a matter of fact.

Yes! I got my tickets through presale. The seats are pretty far back, but they were $67 oppossed to the $128. Plus who needs to get that close to the Who, they will rock my body from a mile away let alone inside the same arena.
Plus I'm not a major fanboy.

Broken Arrow

That's why I'm glad. They are going to Toronto and London. if they were going to Toronto I wouldn't go because it's like 3/3.5 hours from here and I'd have to stay the night and go with my family and all that jazz.
But since they are coming to London a 1.5/2 hour drive where they are playing a smaller venue and I have relatives there too. So My cousin (also 16) and I are gonna go. Should be a good time.
Also London is September the 30th whereas Toronto would be December the 4th.

Those sound good. Congrats. I hope they change up the set a bit. Even Eminence Front and Cry If You Want would be welcome. They did those the first several nights, along with the new 11 minute mini-opera. They said they didn't think the mini was working in front of larger crowds at the moment, but they could of kept the other two songs in. And if they don't want to do the entire mini they can do Mirror Door, Endless Wire, and Mike Post Theme. All those are great songs. It'll be good either way, it just frustrates me that I might hear basically the same set I heard the last two times out, with the exception of Mike Post Theme.
Setlists from my last two Who gigs:
Irvine, CA:

Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere
Who Are You
Another Tricky Day

Baba o'Riley
I'm One
Sea and Sand
5:15
Love Reign O'er Me

You Better, You Bet
The Kids Are Alright
My Generation
Won't Get Fooled Again
Encore:
Pinball Wizard
Amazing Journey/Sparks
See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You
----------------------------------------------
Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA:
I Can't Explain
Substitute
Anyway Anyhow Anywhere
Baba O'Riley
Behind Blue Eyes
Real Good Looking Boy
Who Are You
Drowned
Punk And The Godfather
Love Reign O'er Me
Eminence Front
You Better You Bet
The Kids Are Alright
My Generation / Old Red Wine
Won't Get Fooled Again (extended ending)
Encore:
Pinball Wizard
Amazing Journey/Sparks
See Me Feel Me/Listening To You
I don't mind these setlists. A bit more variety would be welcome considering the musical background of the players. They can learn and perform any song. Long Live Rock, Happy Jack, I Can See For Miles, Getting In Tune, Slip Kid, Squeeze Box, Water, Dreaming From The Waste, Young Man Blues, I Don't Even Know Myself....and on and on. All these are popular enough for people to enjoy. Along with three new songs or so. Just throw some of these in everynight. Hell, when Springsteen came back with the E Street Band they performed 112 songs. Different songs. They didn't just have them ready or consider them, but they actually played them throughout the tour. If they can do that, The Who can do a little more, too.

Yeah. It seems NYC loves The Who. Ever since the Concert For NYC/9-11 when they kicked arse all over the place. Very emotional and timely set they played. The Who have always been good with mini sets at fundraisers and charity events. No warm up needed. No "getting into it". They just blast off from the start. :)

ha! Yeah. Baba is a great and unique song. Very original. Many overlook that...
They are actually auctioning off his "last" broken guitar. For charity. Signed and mounted, I believe. Broke it at a Japanese gig a couple years back. I saw a tape of it. He knocked the crap out of it. Roger looked amused. Or perhaps bemused? Poor Pete. He went to give it one final shot as it dropped over his monitor and it feedbacked like crazy. Pete actually covered his ears in pain. Never saw him do that before.

Um. Where I live (across the lake from Michigan) It takes about two hours to get to Sarnia, which is right across from Port Huron MI. They play in London (the gig I'm going to) which is two hours southeast from me. From Sarnia to London it would take 45 minutes maybe. Not sure how close you are to Port Huron though.

That's a tough one, Lunch. This is the last go around, but making a gig miles away can take planning and time. Transportation and a schedule need to be worked out. And even if driving it's bound to be a 24 hour ordeal of getting ready to go, going, setting up while there for a nice time, and returning. I've seen an updated schedule that includes some west coast dates (Los Angeles area early November, w00t!) but the listed dates are so sporadic it's hard what to make of the schedule at all. This is supposed to be a "major" world tour. Apparently the gigs thus far have been consisdered warm-ups by the band. I can't be certain, and you know the D.C. area whereas I have no idea of it, but if it's a rock n roll concert town at all I would say they will touch down there. Just my opinion. Perhaps you can contact the promoter or someone associated? May not be hard to do.

My only real option is to wait and hope they schedule some dates around me. I'll be at Michigan when they are in Philly anyway so that won't be a reasonable option, and trying to get to any of the Canada shows would be way too much of a hassle.

And usually only club shows are 19+ around here, and even that's not always the case. I'm going to this concert with my cousin who's also 16.

I'll be rockin' the Loge at TD Banknorth Garden. The tickets are almost as expensive as the bus from college to Boston
And as for Lunch, I think there's alot of hope. The southernmost date they have is in NJ. They are missing some serious locations like Las Vegas, Miami, Atlanta, Pheonix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and yet they have great coverage of Canada, which leads me to beleive that they plan on covering the states just as well

No no, I've been to concerts too. What I meant was that to get there I'd have to cross state lines (not a big deal though) and get a hotel room for the night, which requires an adult.

This is great that The Who can play with this line-up. I can't think of another band from their era that would be asked to. And playing behind the Chili Peppers will make them want to kick out the jams. And all the other new bands playing. I don't know.... It's just great that they are respected among the fans and bands and people in general. Remembered and appreciated. The Stones couldn't do this. Nor Zeppelin. The Beatles could. That's it. And just 'cause they're the Beatles.
Anyway, congrats and have a good time. Hope you're not at school then :smoke:

Yeah. Fairly good line up. Should be a good day of music. And the one two punch of the Chili's and The Who? You know The Who are not going to want to be shown up in their older years. By the bands that came before in the day or the one that comes after. So I think they will do a great set.

Astounding Statistics
If you have been visiting our companion website www.thewholive.tv you may have added to these incredible statistics.
Since the Hyde Park concert we have recorded close to three million minutes of viewing download. That is fifty thousand hours. Nearly eleven thousand hours of that was taken up by people viewing In The Attic. The rest was mainly people logging on to watch the Who's London Hyde Park concert which we put up free in its entirety. Our LIVE subscription for In The Attic and Who Live show excerpts continues to run at between twenty and thirty-five thousand unique viewers each night
I urge you to continue to enjoy the free Who footage while it lasts - I am footing the bill for this provision entirely alone, as I have the who website at www.thewho.com for the past six years. Plans are hatching to transfer this website to its own base so that Roger Daltrey can have more input.
Free webcasts of the Who on the U.S. tour will be few and far between as we have decided not to go for a large corporate sponsorship deal for this. I am currently negotiating with Roger Daltrey to continue including live clips of the Who in In The Attic, but these will be pre-recorded in future, not Live.
Any Live webcasting of Who shows in future will be Pay For View, and the profits will go to charity as originally envisaged. However, there will be no free Live Who streaming after the last show of the European tour - so make the most of it.
Your generous benefactor - Pete Townshend
And sort of a related note, does anyone know how to get that piece of crap RealPlayer to work right? I would love to watch some of this stuff properly but lately it keeps telling me my connection is timed out, wtf. Isn't the first time it's done it. And my connection and settings are fine. PETE AND ROGER "FUEDING". BECAUSE ROG IS BEING AN ARSE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND INTERNETS. PETE CALLS ON US TO PERSUADE ROGER TO REASON.
FROM PETE'S MOST RECENT JOURNAL ENTRIES:
21 July 2006
Day to breathe....mountain air.
...... Roger seems to think when I provide bandwidth for the Who website, and for Live streaming, he is being exploited in some way and wants a piece of the future ‘profit’. Don’t think there is much chance of profit when it is all aimed at charity. But, the success story is that nearly three million minutes of footage has been watched, and about 650,000 of those has been In The Attic. It’s been a great adventure on this European leg of the tour.

Mixing And Nixing
NIXING
I’m afraid that it looks very much as though after Zaragosa there will be no free webcasting of any more Who shows, or even segments of the shows, Live or streamed on demand. I may be able to post some segments of the shows in Rachel’s In The Attic series, but only if we can work out some way to pay Roger for exhibiting (or should I say exploiting) his magnificent image and vocals.
Seriously, he seems to be unconvinced that the web has any real contribution to make to our career, and I am not going to spend any more time or money mortgaging my half of the stage – though I may webcast some Who shows and not show Roger at all. Only kidding. For now we have a famous Who stalemate.
If you believe Roger is wrong - and if 2.5 million minutes of Who clips viewed by fans on the web won’t convince him, we’ll need a lot of emails - please write and tell him at thegreatevilweb@hotmail.com
There will perhaps be some Pay For View webcasts for charity, news later. Do enjoy the last two shows at www.thewholive.tv. After Zaragosa www.thewho.com is also coming down from inside www.petetownshend.com where I have run it as a microsite for a number of years. I am hoping I can persuade Roger to put in some money to help run it. Again, your emails to urge him on could be useful. If you feel you can live without a Who website – and there are a good number of wonderful fan-run sites and chat-rooms – then you could say so. But if you feel the Who site has some special value to you, and you would like to see more about – and from – Roger, then let us know.

The Latest From Pete's Diary. Including Setlist Changes For The States And "Who Shows".
25 July 2006
thegreatevilweb@hotmail.com
This address is now full. I don't think I need any more opinions. Of the 250 Mb of emails only two were negative about getting 'free stuff'. One complained about tickets costing $250 - I think there are cheaper tickets available. The other was from a music publisher who pointed out they already owned all our music and we had no right to give any of it away.
I will take a selection of these and print them up for Rog so we can discuss this.
There is some concern expressed that the www.thewho.com is coming down for good. I am just removing it from inside www.petetownshend.com. I'm not sure what will happen to it, but Roger and I will need to agree on some course of action.

25 July 2006
After the Fall
I have already had quite a few emails from fans expressing various views about the cancellation of Who Live webcasting on my www.thewholive.tv website. I’m delighted for the feedback and will share your views with Roger when I get a chance.
I want to say a few things:
1. I don’t want Roger to appear to be a completely against webcasting. He has mixed feelings about it, and as a result would be happiest for a major sponsor to take it over. Intel came close to offering us a deal that involved helping to launch their ViiV system, but I was uncertain about it. It seemed to me that I personally would have the bulk of the work helping Intel to set up and run a new website dedicated to the Who. Roger offered to contribute to a website once it was up and running, but he reserved the right not to do so some times. What he will definitely not do is pay for it. I have been willing thus far to pay for a Who website, and webcasting, for a variety of reasons. Not least, I am already the Who’s principal music publisher, and as a producer I believe In The Attic is a powerful tool to get new personalities and music out in a world where traditional radio is still tied too tightly to advertising and demographics.
2. The Who are well established as a classic rock touring war-horse. Webcasting the Who, whether Live or Pay For View, and donating profits (nor proceeds) to various causes, was entirely my idea. I was unable to share my plan properly with Roger prior to the tour because we were having such trouble meeting our recording deadlines. My feeling, still, is that webcasting allows us new ways to get our new music across that our traditional Live show does not. I have yet to convince Roger of this. Sadly, I announced my grand plans, and put them in action, before Roger really had a chance to digest what I was doing.
3. Six months prior to the start of the Who tour I established a plan for the Live webcasting of In The Attic (during the Who tour but not allied to it). I subsequently persuaded Rachel Fuller (the presenter and my co-producer) to do her show from Who shows for my convenience, even though that caused her a lot of problems – noise from the Who stage, extreme heat at outdoor shows, the expense of taking the video and sound rig to every Who gig, the cost of Satellite equipment etc. The upside for Rachel turned out to be that at Festivals she was able to invite other bands on to chat and play – and we both enjoyed that. I also pleaded with her to include a Live Who song from every Who show in case she sold her show on to television – that way the Who would appear before a wider audience.
4. It will be clear that I simply decided to combine the two main events: In The Attic webcasting was combined with Live Who webcasting (the latter to raise money for charities Roger and I both feel passionate about).
5. The statistics for both the Who viewing figures and for In The Attic are quite phenomenal. They are more surprising for In The Attic; there is a tendency among some people to assume that it is the Who brand name that attracts viewers. The stats show a more balanced view. It appears that about one quarter of those who request video to view on demand watch In The Attic, and they actually stay much longer than the average viewing time on the web. For Live streaming in real time In The Attic outstrips the Who at the moment.
6. I am having a ball doing the In The Attic shows prior to Who shows, and for some reason it is making me feel lighter-hearted about my stage role in the Who. There are number of reasons for this, some are obvious, some less so: I haven’t really evaluated the chemistry yet. It could simply be that I am a performer and I like to have as big an audience as possible. But I do love a technological challenge too. I also like the sound of my own voice.
7. Fans wonder whether Roger’s non-appearance on In The Attic has any significance. Firstly, there has always been an open invitation for him to appear as other artists like Eels or Flaming Lips have appeared – to come on informally and chat and maybe play a song. I believe he is quite simply a little shy, but also feels In The Attic is the exclusive territory or Rachel Fuller and her team (that includes me) and feels he does enough performing on stage with me as ‘The Who’. As yet, he simply hasn’t appeared. No one wants to bully him to commit to come on the show when he is working so hard in the Who.
So there seems to be no real problem. Why am I backing down on Who webcasting? It is simply that while on tour it is too much to carry on my own. I had hoped that Roger would fall more actively behind me, and we could secure a solid sponsorship deal that would make everything flow smoothly, and repay some of my initial investment. Roger has been recorded in the media several times saying that I benefit from publishing income while the Who are not touring, and that allows me greater personal, creative and financial freedom. This is true. But with no promise of any investment from inside or outside the Who I need to stand back now and review my commitment.
Some emails starting to come in are focussing on the price of watching $10 webcasts versus the cost of a $30 DVD. This is not relevant – we are selling Live webcasts. If you are happy with a recording, and are willing to wait for it, you can get what you want from www.themusic.com. To begin with I settled on 99 cents per song-segment, the iTunes model. Our ‘walk-up’ for this was miserable. The Time Zone was tricky for U.S. fans. So we turned to selling the entire show for $10. This was a little better, but our co-production with Hard Rock at London’s Hyde Park created a massive last minute walk-up that – according to our technical people – caused the Pay To View servers to crash. As a result we were forced to put the show up free, after quite a few people had paid for it. We could have asked for money for Who clips on demand (to avoid Time Zone problems), but in the past I have always put these up on the Who microsite free. Live is Live. Anything could happen when you are Live. An edited, streamed download is just not as exciting, and it is not NEW!!!
Another problem is that the Who seem to be playing roughly the same song set every night. We are back in harness, walking an old warhorse of classic rock songs around Europe’s Festivals – playing to new and often younger crowds who are getting to know us. They want to hear the old music. I swing my arm, Roger swings his mike, kids hold up signs telling me to smash my guitar. It’s fun all over again. Our web fans may well have heard it all before, they are more interested in something new and risky: it is a dilemma. A rock Festival with 80,000 kids who have never seen The Who is not the place to get arty.
I feel I have no alternative but to LET GO of my ambitions to see Live webcasting of all or part of every Who show. In The Attic allows me to play new music and old rarities as and when I want to, and to meet new people while on the road with the Who. This does and will continue to keep me interested and revitalised and – as long as she is willing - has the added bonus of bringing my partner Rachel along on the tour with me.
I will continue to discuss with Roger what we might be able to do on the Who stage to take advantage of the immense webcast experience I have. However, I do not want to bully anyone. Roger is my partner in the Who. He is not my partner in anything else. We love each other but we are not regular social buddies like Bono and Edge, we do not discuss or share ideas, and we have no unified joint vision or strategy for the Who or for creative projects in general. For those of you who think the Who should just get their head down, make a record, and play Live, well….
HERE WE ARE!!!!!
On a positive note – I am really enjoying the Who shows we are doing. We are playing some new songs, and will play more new stuff on the U.S. tour. I am enjoying meeting people and seeing new faces in the crowd. When we get to the USA we will at least be in the same Time Zone as the majority of our fans in a country the Who have played in most over the years. The Who is an old rock warhorse, but I have a new intravenous drip in In The Attic, and it seems to be keeping me sprightly. I feel recharged and lightened by my appearances on In The Attic. So I suppose a lot of good things could happen if I just LET GO AND LET THEM HAPPEN.
As I have said may times here in these dairy pages, watch this space.

Doe anyone actually believe that they are going to play anything but the same stuff they played for few decades now. Tour so far have been utterly uninteresting (minus new stuff which of course was dropped fast as usual).
Only chance for rarities is if Townshend plays something in In The attic show but that's it...
Shame they can' be bothered to leave last tour with high note insted same ol same ol...

I think they will, Wanderer. Pete has shown concern for long time fans who want to hear new stuff. And Europe has kind of been a warm up. Wire And Glass and the entire new album are due shortly and I can see them at least doing the Wire And Glass segment again. Plus they are charging a premium. So I think a little something special can be done. If they make it a little special. I hope they can realize that. Don't just play the new stuff, present it. I think we'll get some new stuff. I'm not paying upwards of $100 to see a "hits" show.

JohnXDoe

The smaller crowds were. Larger festival crowds were not, according to Pete. And they have been playing a lot of festivals. Still, they seem to of dropped the "mini opera" from the set entirely. They have been doing Real Good Looking Boy, Mike Post Theme, and Pete did a solo acoustic full version of Endless Wire the other night. When they come to the states and with the new stuff released I hope they do at least 3 new tunes from the new album. Or like I was saying, try to find a way to "present" the new stuff. They can always start the show with it. Doubt they would. But it's something U2 did to great success on the ZooTV tour when they weren't sure about the new stuff. And they still do it to some extent. The audience is ready, the band comes out, plays 3 or 4 new tunes to warm 'em up, and then gives them what they want.

07-27-2006, 01:08 AM
Um, well, not really. These new gigs seem a bit more casual. At least they seem so on the webcast. I suppose age has something to do with it. Once you hit your sixties I suppose time starts moving faster. You age faster, I guess. Roger definitely seems more casual. Just goes out in an old t-shirt and shorts sometimes. Although it has been hot, so that might be why. And Pete has said in his diaries he hates when Rog wears his "granny glasses" because they make him look old. But for the most part, musically, they are still fiery as ever.
I saw them in '96 when they toured performing Quadrophenia with the "big band", in 2002 in Irvine and 2004 at the Hollywood Bowl. Very explosive shows, good band behind them, Pete leaps, windmills, and creates havoc on his guitar. They really haven't lost that much. And it is said Roger has been fighting a throat infection on this latest tour, so that might be a reason for his more casual approach. And I do expect the American shows to be kicked up a notch, while the European ones were a bit more reserved.
Tommorow (July 27) either a peice of a show or an entire show (not sure which) will be broadcast for free on thewholivetv.com. Live, as the site name suggest. You gotta register, I think. 21:00 British Standard Time. Which I think is 1:00 or 2:00pm PST, American. You might look into that timezone thing. So if you're are available, check it out and see for yourself...

The Who started doing that early on. Over the years it sort of evolved into different things. And yes, Pete did do some smashing in the early and mid-seventies here and there. But it wasn't a nightly thing or part of the performance. And the drums stayed put. Amps didn't come crashing down, things exploding. The only other band I've seen engage in this regularly with any kind of effectiveness was Nirvana. They were reckless enough to pull it off. It was The Who who put the violent edge in rock n roll, though. In the music itself and with unpredictabilty. And they meant to do it. It wasn't calculated, but it was deliberate. Townshend at work, mostly. A quote from Wiki's excellent Who page. It's been updated recently:
"The Who were easily one of the most influential groups in rock music as a whole. The aggressive music made by the power trio formation of Townshend, Entwistle, Moon, was FOLLOWED by groups such as Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Jam and nearly all punk and grunge bands."
Such is the extent of their influence. That's why they can play alongside bands less than half their age at festivals. They will be playing the Virgin Fest this year. Right between The Chili Peppers, Knarls Barkley, and The Raconteurs, among others. They also "invented" the Marshall Stack. True. Lot's of 'peeps think it was Hendrix because he kind of made it famous by fuc.king one every night (what a fruit loop). But The Who were making makeshift stacks from the beginning and Marshall developed the first Stacks just for them. Because they had to play LOUD to be heard over Moon. So the Who put a lot of the volume in rock, too. The louder, the better. :)
But yeah, the smashing thing is over. He's done it several times over the years, tops. Last time was in '04 in Japan. It's being auctioned for charity as his "Last Smashed Guitar". So it would have to be. Signed and mounted.
If I won the lottery that bitch would be mine....

About the marhsall stacks
Entwistle used them to make sure the bass gets heard over the drums
townshend used them so the guitar gets hear over the bass
I made a big report one time about the Who, this was in there too.

Not to mention the fact that they were the first band to even use Marshall amps. When Marshall started making them he would use the Who as a testor to see what musicians liked, and didn't like.
On another note, I watched The Kids Are Alright (for the millionth time) today and got to thinking about what happened to the Gibson SG Townshend threw into the crowd. Did it even survive the crowd? Is it still around somewhere today? What do you guys think?

That's a really good song. I don't appreciate it as much as I should because I've heard it so much. And I've never really liked it live for some reason? Perhaps the only Who song I don't like live. But it's really good songwriting and great lyrics. Townshend. Can't say enough about him.

Yeah. I was reading that on the Wiki page. First to use 100 watt heads, too. TKAA is a great film. And that SG? I remember now. He just tosses it. I would think it would of survived. Very well made instrument. And if so I have no idea where it might be? Maybe a Hard Rock Hotel or Casino/Restaurant? The Who do charity work with them, so you never know. But yeah, who took that home? Maybe I'll do a little research....

And that roadie would of never gotten that guitar from me. Never.

Damn.
I had went to a local record store here "Hot Wax" and picked up The Who - Magic Bus, which as I understand is a collection of live recordings. Anyways, I decided to go look at the blues section, and saw a Robert Johnson collection, which I had to have. I had to put The Who down though.

Meh. Looks like thanks to Roger The Who webcasts are coming to an end. I'm not even sure if the ones for charity are going to be up and running. Although I think they might be when the tour hits the States. The two latest entries from Pete's Diary. ALso a new Who website will be coming. Not to be confused with Pete's current website. The Who sub site at Pete's location has been closed, though. Also, the Wire And Glass EP has been officially widely released today after being pushed back a week:
28 July 2006
Roger and Pete in Madrid
I suppose I should have expected some discourse in Who chatrooms and Blogs about my recent diary postings, but NME and Rolling Stone?
It's Lebanon and Israel who are "at war" - not Roger and Pete.
Roger and I are in full accord about our lack of accord. Always have been.
One matter we will agree on.
Tonight we played the best show of our entire NEW career, our first ever show in Spain, at the Olympic Hall in Madrid. The crowd were spectacular. Beyond that, they were the most familiar with our music of any crowd we have ever played to.
This is not the old Who. We never said it would be. It is something else. It matters. The music came alive tonight in the actions and voices of the audience.
I can't wait to come back to Madrid and play again. I think on this too Roger and I will agree.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
28 July 2006
Press Gang
Ah! Journalists. They trawl these diaries over breakfast and extrapolate something, teasing it to fit a headline created by some sub-editor with a sense of humour.
Today it is the British Times newspaper that correctly divines that I am trying to get a sense of our fans opinion about the value of webcasting so I can give Roger an accurate view, but I am most certainly not "sulking" by stopping the webcasting - I respect Roger's very real ambivalence about it. But of course it frustrates me, the Who is a partnership, neither of us get exactly what we want.
I am an internet nut. In Madrid last night I met at least a dozen shining Spanish fans who up until now I have known only through exchanges on the web on Blogs or through my appearances on In The Attic. There are two way of looking at these people - either they are real fans, who buy tickets and support me unconditionally as an artist, or - as decried by Janet Street Porter recently - they are Blogging 'Saddos'. Either way, we have fun, we connect, we are alive. At a concert where the Who play to what looked like 20,000 roaring people I also have a more intimate sense of connection with some of the audience. I suppose the only thing that's 'sad' about that to the press is that it doesn't make them any money.
Until Roger and I have some kind of agreement on webcasting I will stop pushing it. I sincerely thought he would get behind it if I demonstrated how it works. But I have no regrets, the experience has been hugely valuable to me and - as long as I can fund the business - I will continue to produce Live arts-based webcasts shows of some kind for the rest of my life, I feel certain of that.
I am taking down www.thewho.com as well after tomorrow, but again this is not out of spite or anger. This was always something that was planned to be a part of the webcast package, and on this Roger is in agreement to help support a new and greatly revised website, reflecting more of his ideas, as soon as we can find a good webmaster. This new website will definitely go up prior to our first U.S. dates in September.

Pete, Roger, Pino sounds great. It's simply remarkable IMO. I did not anticipate this. I thought I might have to give the guys kind of a break. But no! They don't need it. This band is alive and I hope that translates to the stage when they hit the states. I'd be pleased if you left your opinion in the comments section of the review on sputnik. Agreed. The new material is incredible..
I wasn't sure what to expect. The band is really together (in typical who fasion) and the rythm section still creates that wall of sound behind Pete and Roger (also in typical who fasion). In my opinion, from listening to it, we hear the best from all of their "stages" right from elements of their early stuff through to Quadrophenia, Who's Next and Who Are You.
Excellent stuff.
JohnXDoe
08-09-2006, 06:04 PM
I pretty much agree with that assessment, Jeff. I really don't know how they did this except to say it's the gift of Pete Townshend once again. I mean he wrote these tunes. And these are some pretty damn good ones.
That said, I think Roger is simply great on these cuts. I often slag him as "the singer". Always giving Pete a hard time about lyrics and stuff. But Pete has said he wrote these lyrics for Roger, so to speak. With him in mind. And I tell you, Roger makes it sound that way. His vocal phrasing and inflictions or top notch here. I'm really impressed with him. Especially on Mirror Door. He gives that song so much.
But yeah, this record sounds like The Who influenced by themselves, basically. Sort of like drawing on all their history yet remarkably coming up with something fresh and new out of it. I'm glad you enjoy it, Jeff. It just makes liking this band that much more rewarding.
We Got A Hit is stuck in my head to no end :(

same here. can't really give a maxi-single a higher score. certainly has the makings of a 4 star album, though. Or even 4.5 if all the pieces come together. and as I said in another post Mike Post Theme and Man In The Purple Dress are also very good. and i believe they will be included. so that would seem to be 8 of 12 cuts. although i could of swore I read somewhere Pete trimmed it to 10 cuts as he thought the album was a nice tight set like that. we'll see. but it sure is exciting.
here is a quicktime clip of the band doing Let's See Action. pete on lead vocals. the band kicks in about 1/4 through, so don't think it's a solo acoustic number. they sound great. great behind the scenes/backstage footage, too. and some well done crowd shots. no roger onstage because he still thinks he is being "exploited" somehow. stubborn bastard, as usual. this is supposed to be fun, Rog. it's the internets :(

Hey Guys
I just found this website. It's really good, I think. Haven't seen it all, don't know what they have to offer, but it's all about Quadrophenia. Tours, setlist, pics, mods, scooters, etc. The film, too. Oh, and I read some posts back that said Quad was a strange film. But it's not. At all. It's a straight drama based on the album. Mod kid, drugs, beach riots, lot's of good shooting locations around England. It's a really good movie. Every Who fan should see it.

i can't imagine See Me Feel Me being in the middle of a set, it has to be at the end pre-encore or the end of the encore.

That's one of my favorite lines on that entire album.
I'm listening to their show from December 8, 1979 at the International Amphitheater in Chicago. Supposed to be one of their greatest shows ever. It's really good.

jeff, one day, if you can, i will do anything you want on the internets for just part of what you have there. this is my favorite era for The Who, Moon be damned. no pressure. i know it's a hassle. but my b-day is in sept. so pleeeease, give it some thought. i see these things on torrent sites sometimes but last i tried the torrent was dead. so whatever you can do would be really, really great. you have no idea.
let me know how your dad likes Wire And Glass....
EDIT: seafroggys that is actually a classic set closure for The Who. pretty common. so i don't get that whole "see me, feel me" thing. and "how can you do it alone" live is killer.

huh, well I'm not that famliiar with it I guess.
Someone on Youtube uploaded the entire Las Vegas 'Reunion' concert, I'm thinking its the beginning of their 2000 tour. Pretty good, only 14 songs though.

Haha, don't worry. I'll upload it soon for all you guys. The quality is alright, considering it is a bootleg, but the performance really shines through.
I'll have to convert it to .mp3 though, it's in flac right now, so the whole show is 958 MB =o
EDIT: Oh, and my Dad thought it was pretty good. We're both going to go see The Who together. ^_^

yeah, i've seen some of that youtube stuff. it's great. i was going to link it here but i guess it's pretty common. just go to the site and search the Who. I saw Squeeze Box from '82. it's great.

Ah, victory. I have finally managed to make it to The Who topic. All it took was a re-registry. I've seen the Hyde Park show that was broadcast; it was absolutely fantastic. I'm hoping that I can see The Who this winter. They're definitely still putting on a fantastic live show. The new studio stuff is sounding tight, too. Wire & Glass was wonderful.

I was going to, but I'll be in Michigan so that didn't really work out. It would be cool, but there's a lot there that I don't really care about that makes the ticket more expensive, you know what I mean?

I think you are right on all counts there. And the shows in the States should be even tighter and more fan oriented so far as the setlist. Welcome to The Who Thread :)

I think that is wise, Lunch. They will probably play a shorter "festival set" at Virgin, too. Like some they've played in Europe. Better to try to see them headlining their own show.

i have no idea what an "Electric Prom" is. The Who will be performing an 11 song "mini opera" there. i don't think it is the album which is coming out, but an extended and expanded Wire And Glass set. Although I can't be sure of that, either. Just a guess, but that's what it sounds like. Should be interesting.
Is it really that good? The new album?

yes, it's really good IMO. it's a maxi-single/"mini opera" thing. 12 minutes long, basically. very nice. full album in October.

Who else out there thinks the 1979-81 post Moon era was a peak time for The Who live? Just as good as the earlier years. If not Leeds era good, just as good is a different way. I like the horn section they brought in '79 and the setlist as well. Everyone sounds great. I think those who say The Who should of quit when they lost Moon are kinda' full of crap. I've been looking at the youtube material and have some live stuff from that time on vinyl. Plus i've heard bootlegs before and have seen clips from 30 Years Of Maximum R&B Live. I'm knocked out by it. Some of their best performnces ever.

Yea, I agree with you. Dave Marsh makes particular note of that in his biography, which I know you've read. Kenney Jones gets scrutinized a lot when really his performance is quite good. The band as a whole plays great during this time period, but it's tough for many to get passed Moon's death.
JohnXDoe
08-19-2006, 07:29 PM
yeah, i think Marsh hits it right on the head. sure Moon was an unpredictable element and a great drummer, but Jones shows himself to be a powerful drummer following in his footsteps. i watch those clips and see how he has to give all that he has got, huffing and puffing and spent by the end of one song. and then doing it again. he's not as nimble as Moon. he's a more straight up and straight forward drummer. but that suited the Who at the time, as i think townshend and daltrey wanted a more straight forward and focused performance. and it makes me wonder what keith must of had in him all those years watching kenny with his worked out arms and beefy upper body struggle to keep pace (as well as he does) while Moon with his small stature used to make it look effortless. kenny sort of looks like an out of shape Moon behind the skins. as conditioned as he was, it was still a struggle.
but anyway, yeah. Pete just seems energized, Roger strong, John thunderous, Kenny powerful, and the entire band is just incredibly loose and focused. i know the turmoil in the band at the time, but regardless they just sound great. 100%.
Street_Fighting_Man
08-19-2006, 08:16 PM
I don't think it was a peak time for the band, but it definitely wasn't a bad time live like some people think. I think the biggest difference is the chemistry between the instrumentalists. I mean, Kenny Jones is good, but just look at how Moon, Entwistle, and Townshend gelled together, especially during improvised instrumentals. I don't think anybody could recreate that kind of thing that they had around '69-'70, but they were always great live.

I've enver liked Jones style of drumming. he had this big *** drumset, but never used it. I saw him do a two bar fill that was just 16th notes on the snare, no accents or nothing, just straight 16th notes on the snare for two bars. I thought that was really lame.

Short Disclaimer: You may or may not notice that I did not mention everything The Who have released, or all the people in their line-up at all times. Nor did I mention Tommy(the movie) or Quadrophenia (the movie). I wanted to focus on The Who’s music in their prime years, rather than their various reunions and films.

yea but dude lol then it wouldn't have been my own work that I put my effort into for a band I love. Everyone can get on wikipedia to see what they say about the Who. Not everyone can see what Lunch has to say about the Who.
You're right though, it basically is the same info. I should go tell Jom, Steerpike, Med, Riva, and everyone else to stop putting their efforts into detailed write-ups for MX because they probably didn't know that the information they used was somewhere else on the internet already.
