Here is my review on sputnik:
http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=9683&page=1#lastpost
The Who have lots of good material on here. Unfortunately Pete Townshend gets in the way of it with his arty pretentions. What he added to the mini opera Wire & Glass which comprises the second half of the album sounds much like filler and the first half of the album (Endless Wire) doesn't quite come together and is a bit uneven. Therefore I have trimmed the fat off my copy and rearranged the playing order of the songs. You may want to do the same after you here the album. Or even before. It makes a substantial difference. Here is my final track listing taken from the 19 tracks included (21 with the extended cuts of WGOH and EW)
1.Fragments
2,We Got A Hit (Extended Version)
3. It's Not Enough
4. Black Widow's Eyes
5. A Man In A Purple Dress
6. Mike Post Theme
7. Two Thousand Years
8. Endless Wire (Extended Version)
9. Sound Round
10. Pick Up The Peace
11. They Made My Dreams Come True
12. Mirror Door
13. Tea And Theater
14. You Stand By Me
I must say if this had been the album The Who released it would of been easier to digest, as trimming really does improve the whole. What they released needs some editing, IMO. So the above is what I recommend for a true Who experience. You can forget the rest, as you aren't missing anything and IMO it intrudes on things. Enjoy...
EDIT: If you are one of the first few posters to grab this and the page turns over please quote the download link in your post so it will carry over to the next page. Thanks....

and where is the "God Speaks of Marty Robbins" ?, best song from the record by far. Uncertain Girl was also far better than most what is on it now. I guess Roger just couldn't sing it (just like he can't sing "2000 Years" either) like Pete was talking about on ITA. Should have been included with Pete doing it.

^ "Marty Robbins Speakes To God" is fine. I suppose its interchangeable with a track or two here. But for my taste it makes for a little too much acoustic stuff on the album.

The first is A Quick One from The Rolling Stone's Rock and Roll Circus, which is one of my favorite pieces of live footage of any song ever.
The Second is Man In A Purple Dress from Letterman. Really good performance too.
i love the rock and roll cricus performance.
legand has it that the rolling stones withheld the footage for ages because they felt the who's performance overshadowed them. not sure how true that is...

Wow. "Man in a Purple Dress" is so beautiful. I'm glad that Pete and Roger were able to write a mellow, acoustic song, and not have it sound cheesey (as many musicians have when they reach that age). I'm looking forward to the album more and more.
It's due out tommorrow, right?

I want to get the limited edition one, as it comes with a DVD according to this:

But I don't know if that if best buy only, as John said. I can get the album tomorrow no problem, but if they don't have the special edition at the music stores, then I will want the one from Best Buy or whatever, but my friend is going there tomorrow, and I have to phone him but he will probably buy the cheapest. -_-

my computer at home is down thanks to HD failure and some bios problems installing the new one. or something. so i may not be around a lot for the release so far as posting is concerned, but here is the info on the release.
most/many/all releases of Endless Wire i believe come with the DVD. the best buy info i saw has an additional disc, an audio cd. its a live disc. seven songs. so that makes a total of 3 discs from best buy. and yeah i think its an exclusive.

Its pretty good, yeah. i like Mike Post Theme a lot. Better then expected. Black Widows Eyes is somewhat majestic. Nice Pete harmonies. I also like the extended cuts and Mirror Door. I appreciate also that Pete didn't try to hide the flaws so far as Rogers voice. He warbles a bit on Mirrior Door, sounds really gruff on the extended versions of WGOH and EW. All works to great effect. Many of the songs give a "live in the studio" impression.
oh and jeff i read your post at sputnik. the reason the album was rated low is someone went through all the reviews on the front page and rated them 1. they also neg voted on all of them.

this is from a guy who posts at thewhotour.com and he always does stuff with Who songs. he's a musician. he did a version of Endless Wire the morning the damn album came out. it was pretty good. i'm just going to post his post. its not half bad:
What Would We Got A Hit Sound Like With John Playing Bass:
Here's my idea of what it'd sound like...
http://www.sameerbarua.com/wgah.mp3
Unfortunately my rig is still not set up so I had to play it on a Takamine acoustic bass using weird EQ and distortion settings to attempt to sound like him (I normally have a dead-on setting on my Digitech pedal).
While I don't intend to offend other John fans, I attempted to sound as much like him as I could, borrowing most heavily from licks and playing styles in WGFA and Dreaming from the Waist.
Comments are welcome!!!

I'm not that impressed with the DVD that came with my copy of Endless Wire. It's that Lyons show, but it doesn't really seem like there is much energy between the players. I dunno though, maybe it's just because I'm tired.

From http://www.intheattic.tv/rachel.
Seems like Attic Jam was a great show. "Something In The Air" was definately rather unexpected...
****'
The gig last night was phenomenal.
I opened by playing Cigarettes and Housework and then Pete joined me for Sunrise.
Then Mikey performed Plasticine, i joined him for You, and Pete and Simon joined in on Misery.
Then Simon played Comeback, Scaffolding and Sexchange.
Minnie Driver then performed Everything in my Pocket, Sorry Baby, and Pete and I joined her for Fast as you Can.
Pete then performed Greyhound Girl, Endless Wire, Blue, Red and Grey, Marty Robbins, Lets See Action and I joined him for In The Ether.
Then E from EELS played a killer set, i dont know the names of some of the first songs (will find out), but performed Jeanies Diary, Flyswatter, Pete joined him for Its a Mother****er, i then joined them for Birds, and then he and Pete finished with Let my love open the door and The kids are alright.
Billy Corgan then played 4 new songs, and Pete and i joined him for Something in the Air by Thunderclap Newman, i played Kazoo, see photo. haha.
I then sang Jigsaw with Pete and finished with Blue by Joni Mitchell which i dedicated to Linda McCartney.
I can't really describe how special the evening was.
Mikeys set was brilliant - his best yet.
Simon was very energetic and jumped around a lot! Scaffolding is beautiful, and i had never heard it before.
Minnie Driver kicks ***. I told her to keep at it, its difficult for actors/actresses to crossover, but she's a great artist and should be heard.
Petes set was beautiful. He played the new songs with real passion. I love hearing him perform like this, stripped down, bare. The Who are of course brilliant, this is totally different - up close.
E was HILARIOUS, and performed as he does. He's a genius.
Billy hadnt played a live show for a long time, over a year. He was nervous - i like that, it shows real humility as an artist of his calibre. His set was mind-****ingly brilliant and his humour dry and incredibly funny.
What an evening - i felt honoured to have been part of it.

Hey Who people. I'm starting to miss this thread which is a sure sign of my return. You may of noticed I've been MIA since the gig i attended on Nov.5. I don't know what it is? I feel a little as if the band is coming to an end. A final end. Its kind of sad for me, and of course the nature of the band today is much different then it was even four years ago. Couple that with a Hollywood Bowl gig that saw them do material that i've heard them do live a few times before with the exception of the new stuff and i guess i have a few things to say about the band before i dive into the thread again. The Who are kind of lost on me right now. I need to post about it and clear my thoughts out of the way. But its hard getting it out. Like writing an honest letter to a long time lover after your feelings have changed, although you may still love her/him. I'll get around to it. Long live rock and all that.....hope everyone is well :)

To JXD, I too feel this might be one of the final hurrahs for The Who. It's sad in some ways, especially when you care for the band as much as I do. Still, it would be a great end. I mean, they managed to come back with only half of the original members who are both in their 60's to make an interesting and creative album. This is a testament to how great a band they are.

Black Widow's Eyes is an awesome song. Among my favorites from the new album. Mike Post Theme is most likely my fave. Two Thousand Years, Its Not Enough, the extended We Got A Hit and Endless Wire, all are aces in my book...
Seafroggys
12-04-2006, 11:54 PM
I actually don't liek Mike Post Theme too much. It doesn't have enough balls to it, to be honest. Roger does a fantastic job, but it needed a heavier electric guitar part to it, the light acoustic doesn't cut it.
JohnXDoe
12-05-2006, 07:34 AM
yeah. pete went heavy with the acoustic stuff on the album. i think MPT has some slamming bass and drums, though. and i love the chorus of "ba-ba-ba-bah's. or whatever it is they're saying. and yeah, Roger carries the whole thing, you are right.
'froggys i know you are a drummer. and drums is one of the things sadly missing from this record. a bit more gusto on the Wire & Glass songs perhaps, but meh. i read that not only was Zak unavailable for the album (stupid Oasis) but that Pete actually plays drums on 12 cuts! ok, we all know Pete plays drums he's a decent multi-instrumentalist. but he is no DRUMMER. As in Moon/Jones/Starkey/Huntington (Huntington being the Wire & Glass EP drummer). and whatever anyone thinks of Jones (i know you hate him for The Who) drums were still prominent on the albums he made with them. on the new album they're just kind of non-existent. i gotta bit of a problem with that.
anyway guys i'm starting to feel good about posting in this thread again. i still have some reservations about this new thing Rog & Pete have going after all is said and done with the new record, and especially after i saw the show. which was good, but for me something was missing that was there even a few years ago. i don't know if its worth delving into and posting about or if i should just keep discussing the new stuff and going forward as a fan with this band. its just the old Who seem very much gone now. a memory. dust in the wind. and that makes me sad :(
anyway, i'm away on business until Thursday. i'll post back up upon my return. take care, everyone.

Yeah the album was heavily acoustic oriented. Now the acoustic based songs I like, such as Black Widow's Eyes and Purple Dress and all the others. Its just MPT is not an acoustic song in its arrangement, it doesn't sound too good with just an acoustic, it needs an electric in there. Especially during the "We're not strong enough..." bombastic Punk and Godfather style part, it just needed that electrifiedness to it.
As for the drumming, Zak does one song (can't remember, I'm at college right now burning time between classes), but I think Pete did a pretty decent job. One thing I didn't like is how he used a drum machine during Tea & Theatre, it just doesn't sound right, and doesn't really fit in with the song (when its just the two doing it live, I think its perfect), plus its a fricken drum machine.
Unlike you JxD, I wasn't a fan of The Who while John was still alive, so I personally don't know the magic of them being around (or seeing the three of them). Which is probably why I thought it was the greatest concert I had ever seen, because I wasn't around the live the magic and know what it was like before. Now I do feel the same way about The Beatles though, I was a huge fan when George was alive. If, for some odd reason Paul and Ringo got together, I would feel weird about it.

What'd you think of the new material they played? When I saw them I thought it was all great; I'm anxious to see what other people think.
I still haven't picked up Endless Wire yet because I'm a tool.
I thought the new material was pretty awesome. They did a really good job mixing old stuff with the new ablum. From memory, they did Fragments, Black Widow's Eyes, Man In The Purple Dress, Mike Post, and all of Wire and Glass.
They also played about three songs from Tommy, which was cool. Daltrey went through a stack of tambourines during Sparks.
They didn't play any of Quadrophenia, which I was really hoping to see (also my favorite album ever), but it was still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

yeah they were better on the US tour then the European tour, which is the DVD that comes with Endless Wire. I was in a practical orgasm at the concert, while watching the DVD is "yeah, its good, and awesome."

so far as the DVD, i remember a time not so long ago when The Who were incapable of putting on a listless show such as the one on the DVD. or even if its just the DVD production that is bad the band would come through, just like in all those piss poor bootlegs we watch. they are amazing. no more. now they have "on" nights and "off" nights. before, even an off night would put most other bands to shame. and i'm talking just four or so years ago. no longer. i like Endless Wire, I appreciate the tour, but part of me wishes now they wouldn't have done any of it.
man i don't now how to describe it. i love The Who, but part of me is sad and disappointed about the way they are ending it. or maybe its just the fact that its the end and it shows. i don't know? Rog has gotten so old. in just a few years. whole different performer, can't swing the mic because of shoulder surgery, Pete has aged as well, his leaping not so high anymore, his guitar not as explosive. they are creaking, the band plays along, and thats The Who. or is it?

If anything, Pete is more explosive then he's have been in awhile. I watch stuff from 10-15 years ago (the Quad and Tommy tours) and he's hardly as explosive as he is now.
But I agree with Roger.
I still think they kick ***, but after this they'll degrade to the point of mediocrity. This should be it (then again, that was said in 1982 ;) )

Tommy is the most amazing album. Don't ever get the soundtrack to the movie, just get the album.
I saw The Who on the tour 3 days after Entwistle died a couple of years ago. They played MSG to a sold out audience and Pino Palladino did a fantastic job, even with struggling through My Generation. Mad props to Ringo's son for his drumming, but truly there is only one Keith Moon. They played all the classic greats. The only songs they played off Quad were Love Reign o'er Me and 5:15 which was fine with me but I would have loved to hear more.
The most impressive thing to me and to everyone I was with who saw them was how tight they were, as well how they seemed to epitomize that anthem rock band that was almost meant to play huge arenas. Songs like Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again had everyone with goosebumps, and songs like The Kids are Alright and I Can See For Miles blew everyone out of their seats in crazy singalongs. The only bad songs were Eminence Front, but they did Athena too and it was surprisingly amazing. I was upset they didn't play Join Together.

they leave a lot of good stuff out of the sets. have for years. not such a big deal with all the new material they include now. unusual even for younger bands, but much else in the set remains the same. they could throw a curve ball in from time to time, but don't. and they have the musicians to do it. but meh...
i saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last month and unfortunately the set list was even tighter because they had lost their longtime keyboard player to an illness in his family. so a tech or two stood in. we got the hits, and the new stuff, Tommy encore. which i am tired of hearing and sounded a little tired on that night.
meh, 'froggys, pete is good still. but i tire of his newfound histrionics with all the excessive hammering and what not. i understand his sound has changed because of his hearing and he is still energetic, but he's also just going through the paces sometimes. understandable as he has been doing this a long time. but for me this end period has just seemed anti-climatic for a band like The Who. i'll get over it. i just feel like i'm starting with the band all over again and i don't know quite what to make of it. or them.
at thanksgiving my brother in laws father was in town. nice guy. mellow, warm, generous. tall, lean, balding, graying, 60 years old. ready for retirement in a few years. we put on a Beatles album and he started to bob his head a little, got into the music. i can see that. but the way he was standing there in his black jeans and shoes for an instant reminded me of Pete. and i tried to imagine him with a guitar strapped on, leaping in the air, windmilling. and i just couldn't get the picture. didn't seem right, didn't really fit. i kind of see pete the same, now. something doesn't quite fit. god bless him, but like i said i hope this is truly the end of "the leaping years" and The Who for pete. time to move on. they have given us much since the return in 1999. but this is it, IMO. and with John gone, as good as Pino is, on stage they suffer for it in sound and energy. i was looking at some stuff with John from 2000 on thewhotour.com and man, he was not to be replaced. he brought so much. meh....i am sad, but i'll work it out.
wanderer

New album is worst Pete Townshend record ever, however fact is still that Pete is now clearly more inspired about playing live than previous 2000 tours.... that's because of the new songs.... 2000 tour was meaningles bland
tour and Pete has far more energy now than then. Another sad fact is also that Pino sounds far superior than John did because of that disgusting overprocessed sound John ended up using (why on earth he did that !!).
And why the heck people still expect Pete to leap/windmill now, totally pathetic and ridiculous, would much rather see him stop that complately and just play... same with Roger's mic stuff.
But then again, I think Pete should have done solo record/tour, might have been actually GOOD record....
thanks for those, 'frroggys.

Watching "live at royal albert hall"
Pretty good concert, exept for:
- Kelly Jones from Stereophonics should never be allowed near a mic again.
- Eddie Vedder sounds like a goat.
- I simply dont like Bryan Adams, the only one who can sing "Behind Blue Eyes" correct is Roger.
- Entwistle is a little low in the mix, lacks a little in the low department(i thought he did one rig for lows and one for high?) and all the modelling effects in his rig make him sound little syntetic..

fwqhgads makes a good point. Townsend always hated The Who. The entire time.
I finally got Endless Wire the day after Christmas with gift/exchange money and it's a pretty good cd. Obviously not The Who at their peak but I think it's at least better than Who Are You. And I haven't heard all of Facedances or It's Hard, but I would guess it's probably better than those too.
I'm really pissed I missed The Who on this last tour. Especially since tons of people from my school went, who only know "Teenage Wasteland" and have no idea Tommy even existed:(.
And Dragon Prince, judging from that list, it seems you're pretty interested in that spacey, ambient proggy sound. Check out The Arcade Fire. Funeral is an awesome cd and pretty similar to Sigur Rios. The Flaming Lips are awesome too, but they're psychedelic and trippy than spacey. They're both modern bands. In terms of older prog, you can't go wrong with Crimson, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull...

And while FD is a good album IMO, its not as good as EW even if EW is not perfect. nothing on FD can even touch Man In A Purple Dress, Mike Post Theme, Marty Robbins, or even 2000 Years, with the exception of You Better You Bet and Another Tricky Day. And the mini opera Wire And Glass is better then Face Dances or in its own way just as good, at least.. And Its Hard? Better then EW? Thats just a joke.

Nothing outrageous about it. Simple fact is that everything on FD songwriting wise is better than anything on EW which couldn't have been worse. Only two songs that showed the usual standard of Pete's songwriting were MPT and GSOMR. His songwriting has truly gone to toilet since (at least according to this record) since Psychoderelict (which had great memorable hooks/emotion/lyrics etc.). One can only pray that he released at least one more album just to show that he still has a good songwriting in him. This effort couldn't have been bigger disappointment regards to songwriting and singinging wise ( they left it too late, Roger has lost "IT" he once had, great (even good) voice is gone). sad but true.

I'm really pissed I missed The Who on this last tour. Especially since tons of people from my school went, who only know "Teenage Wasteland" and have no idea Tommy even existed:(.
**** those bastards. Y'know, right before the Encore I ran down from my seat and got as close to the floor as I could get. The kid I was standing next to was with his girlfriend, and he only seemed to care about Pinball Wizard, he didn't seem to even remotely care about Amazing Journey, Sparks (!!!!!), or See Me Feel Me (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). ****ing ho.

now Entwistle actually have some bass at Live at royal albert hall, you can weakly hear that anoying "Treble Syntetic fuzz" but the bass overpowers it so it actually sounds good :p On the DVD you mainly hear the fuzz.

......and since we are on the subject can someone explain to me what John did with his bass sound in the later years of The Who? i've read he changed his sound or switched from the all wood bass to a more refined/manufactured one and this affected his sound/tone adversely. less thunder and boom and more, well, refinement? i hear it, too. he doesn't seem to be as loud, and even when so not as powerful. he was an excellent musician but is it possible he may have "lost a step" due to his partying or is this simply something he thought was more becoming of a bass player of his skill. i really have no idea?

01-21-2007, 07:16 AM
yeah i guess you don't play in a band like The Who and come out with perfect hearing. guess John had the bad hearing as well. and roger must to some extant. small price to pay at the end, i suppose. but i know with pete it caused some pain, so that was unfortunate. and of course the tinnitus. pete has said recently that his hearing problems were somewhat exaggerated, though. even by him. or at least as of late, as he said he was pretty stable now and not deaf or threatening to go deaf.
still it did cause him to give up electric guitar in live performance for awhile and even now he only plays the Eric Clapton Signature Strat onstage, so thats pretty serious if you ask me. sure wish he could pick up that old SG or Les Paul for a go or two....

Maybe it doesn't sound as good for his overdrive but his clean tone is much better. I'd rather have bad overdrive than bad clean tone if I was playing what they do. Lets face it, Marshall + SG sucks for clean in comparison but a Fender guitar and amp are fantastic.

I like how honest he is answering the questions though. It's nice to see someone who's not afraid to be honest. Pete's honesty has gotten him in trouble before, because he never really knows when to shutup, but it means that his interviews are always entertaining, and here he's really honest and insightful without saying anything jerky and stupid. I like the stuff he said about Mehmet Baba a lot. And about being unhappy when The Who were at their peak. And about the current Who being different, not better or worse. And just about everything else he said.

wow that was quite excellent. you nail it. i think that is my fave part of the song. i wish all the Who's drummers played it just like that on stage. something about it is just perfect for that segment of the song. its as if Moon understood he was to add to the suspense before Daltrey kicked in, not end the suspense with some big showy solo....i wonder if pete came up with that, though? i've never heard a demo for WGFA so i don't know....

Tommy has never caught on with me. Studio, live, or otherwise. I'm not sure if i would recommend it to anyone as a place to start with The Who, althoguh picking a place to start with The Who can be a bit of difficult business.

I've given in a couple of informal listens since, it's starting to click very nicely. I had a look at the story interpretation as well which i found interesting.
The first things that really grabbed me when i listened to it was the guitar instrumental at the end of Overture, the rhythmic pattern to Sparks, and a lot of Keith Moon's drum parts (you can feel the energy behind his playing i swear). Cousin Kevin really creeped me out as well. The rest of it seems nicely arranged as i listen to it again.
I can see what you mean as perhaps a difficult starting point JXD. I'm liking it though.

well i'm glad you find it challenging. it is that. and upon the first several listens (and beyond) it is an interesting album. still is to my ears, tbh. but it just never "clicked" for me like it has others. lately a little more so, but not quite completely. i kinda see Tommy as The Who's odd man out sort of album. doesn't quite fit them. although some say the same of my favorite Who album, Quadrophenia. which i think is "100% Who", however ambitious. so it goes between the Tommy and Quadrophenia Who factions....two sides of the same coin, we are....

It's such a shame what happened to Entwistle's bass sound in late 80s ?. He still had such great sound before that. I have never quite understoodd what happened and I still wonder if it had something to do with his hearing ?.
Not to even mention Pete who sadly little later discovered the "joy" of the ridulous type of "soloing/whammybar obsession" thing that he simply doesn't have the technique to do and it' just bad.
