Personal playing. It's a backing track from a Kylahullut song and I've given it to a few other people and we're basically just doing one each, then I'm going to transcribe the solo Alexi wrote for it and we can all compare ours to his.

We're gonna loose.

In Your Face is great, I've loved it ever since the album leaked and I got hold of it. I actually like the lyrics, people are just too over critical and need to cut it out.

I think they're practically the only songs with out sweeps yeah...

I mean, there's songs that just have one or two that are at a medium or slow tempo like Bodom After Midnight, Bed of Razors, Everytime I Die.

Actually, listen to the Hatebreeder solos, there's no sweeping in them.

Just remember that you're probably going to play a bit sloppoy when you pick it up again so don't rush, you'll need to slowly bring your fingers back into the routine of playing again, but I'm sure you realise this already...

in theory, definitely. My problem was that they weren't 100% in synch at ALL times, which really started to aggrevate me. Really sucked trying to get better at chromatics when it starts to go south.

I really just had to focus on my picking hand more, than slowly be able to FEEL both in synch at the same time.

haha, not really at all...

I've really worked a TON on my focus, and what my mind is doing while I practice, and really getting the most out of my time. It didn't seem like repeating the lick at a certain speed for 5 minutes was really getting the most out of my time, unless my mind was fully aware with what is going on.

Its much easier now staying in time as well, and accenting the down beat. Like on 3 note per string runs, I can now tell if im using a down stroke, or up stroke, and am able to accentuate that regardless. It's helping me favor downstrokes even less.

Sweeps having gotten a lot tighter as well, which makes me pretty giddy

well, friday i really practiced my fukking arse off. 4 hours of metronome, 2 of those hours were non-stop, no breaks.

Saturday I was basically fukked when they hooked up my high speed, because I had a friend over, and we played xbox LIVE for about 6 hours straight. I felt guilty and snuck out of bed at midnight to metronome for an hour

Yesterday, my girl decided to walk around the house in the nude all day, so that limited to the guitar practice.

again, i felt guilty and snuck out of bed at like 12:30 a.m. and metronome'd for an hour.

Today, I'm pretty excited about practicing and getting this in synch over 100 bpm. I'll probably get at least 2 hours in

I sometimes get about 2 hours in non stop too but it's not an every day thing unfortunately.

I find that if I practise different things, it keeps it interesting whereas usually I just practise the same 3 licks for 2 hours and get really bored/tired but if I pracise some picking, some tapping and then sweeping, I can go for longer.

I just need to get the hell into bed and stop sitting here doing absolutely nothing.

and yes i know. at first i will play only for 30mins to max 1hour and when it will be ok for the first few days i will increase my practise time to 30-1hour twice daily (morning and evening).
at first i will do only chromatics and easy chords; then i will move to some metallica stuff and easy songs... i will need 2-3weeks to get to my older level of playing for sure and i will NOT play any stretches (even if they are small) for the whole november.... holy ****... its frustrating but i can deal with it....

at least i improved my picking technique a lot and play in the style of paul gilbert/buckethead :D
and i have a BIG list of songs i plan to learn and some of them are easy so i won't get bored until i can play WHATEVER i want to in november :smash:

I need to work on my picking. My alternate picking is bad, mostly when playing runs and such. The only really fast runs I can play are legato right now.

repcak
10-23-2006, 03:47 PM
downpicking legato runs are easy... but upwards-legato-runs are much more difficult.

i have problems doing 3-notes per strings runs - its not accurate and fast; i have to work on that.

kurrpt2
10-23-2006, 03:49 PM
yea, you obviously favor down strokes a bit too much...

I've been working on legato and picking hand 85% of the time, which seems to be the 2 biggest things holding me back right now

I like doing legato stretches like 1 34 6 , and playing that stretch all the way over the fretboard, getting it perfectly in synch. It makes 3 note per string legato runs so much easier

repcak
10-23-2006, 04:00 PM
no not really... the funny thing is that the problem ARE my downpicks
how i mentioned before i use economic picking while doing 3string runs and the problem are the downs, but i just can't play it alternate...

kurrpt2
10-23-2006, 04:11 PM
your picking hand is confused and your economy picking is causing the problem...

what helped me a lot was spend about 20 minutes and figure out the absolute BEST way for me to do an upstroke, and a down stroke. Like, where the pick is making contact with the string, what motion my wrist is doing, what I'm focusing on, etc.

Once you have a frame of reference, I started at like 75 bpm, and started playing 1/8th notes (just with the pick hand, not bringing my fret hand in the picture yet) and really so how well I could reproduce that "perfect" stroke over, and over, and over...

for me, I try to achieve that perfection, and I will continue playing at that speed for about 15-20 minutes, or like my practice now where I'm doing legato stretches (1 34 6), I'll play that same tempo unless I can keep it perfect for like 30 minutes straight.

I'm really obcessed with eliminating mistakes, so that's the best thing for me

So I came up with this cool riff just now, and I think it's a good lick to warm up with.
e|------------------------------------------------------------
b|------------------------------------------------------------
g|-13-12------------12-13-12-------------12-13-----------
d|--------15-14-15-------------15-14-15-------------------
a|--------------------------------------------------15-13-15
e|------------------------------------------------------------
It helps me with my alternate picking and finger independence (mostly between ring and pinkie).

Sounds like it could be a classical piece if you expanded on it. Especially that bit where it goes to the A string.

Me too. The frets are the perfect size for my fingers for lead stuff. I tried to learn the Passage To The Reaper Vivaldi thing, but the frets from 19 - 22 are so hard for me to play accurately. I guess I'm just not used to playing so high up on the fretboard.

higher frets dont bother me so much as playing on the lower strings :\ you gotta reach around and that interferes w/ my fingering

So does anyone have the Bodom DVD? Thoughts?

no.

i think i will re-learn my picking technique and will start to pick alternate... @kurrpt2: do you pick EVERYTHING alternate or do you make sometimes economy picking?

i only will economy pick one note per string runs, and only when i feel they should be swept (like a lot of alexi licks). I find that alternate picking those 1 note per string runs is extremely difficult to do perfect with any kind of speed, so i will often practice it that way, even if its supposed to be alt picked.

If I'm playing chords, it's really a toss up. I will try it with all downstrokes, and get that perfect. Then I go back, and alternate pick/strum the chords, and see if I like the feel better, or if the chord sounds better. I like to practice both methods because I feel it makes me more rounded

i alternate pick everything as wel...in fact it's hard for me to play consistent downpick in songs like MoP so i just alternate it.

i cant sweep :(

eh, its no big deal really. The majority of the people on this forum, or any forum can't sweep correctly.

It took me forever to be able to sweep triplets at 175 bpm

sweeping is one of the most difficult techniques for guitar... it takes years of right practising.

thanks kurrpt... i will work on that ;)

Sweeping is easy.

kurrpt2
10-24-2006, 02:01 PM
it is, depending on the speed and the shape of the sweep, as well as how hard the position change is, etc

Hate Crew Deathroll

Nope. All shapes are the same. You're supposed to practise them all equally and that's what I did for that reason. What you need to do is practise all the 5 string shapes, 6 notes at 40bpm, clean guitar for an entire week and don't play anything else.

Whats with all this ghey guitar talk? since when do Henkka or Jaska get any attention?

kurrpt2

that would be easy for me, especially at that speed Mitch.

7 string sweeps can be much harder than 3 string sweeps
