yeah that links works, thanks
thats the way i play it, but i cant get it too sound right with the delay. maybe im puttin the delay on too fast or slow?
and whats with the bodom sucks video? it actually helped me play the solo better
Put on a metronome at 142bpm and play that lick.
Set the delay to 316.90 milliseconds.
You need to play each note very staccato other wise it'll ring out and that's how the delayed note will sound so it'll end up very sloppy, especially at higher speeds.
If you check my recording of Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee, you'll hear me playing 8th notes at 200bpm and actually, the hardest part about it was keeping every note staccato while giving each note a good volume and tone otherwise it would have sounded terrible and sound like a big mush. It takes alot of very quick movements to stop the note immediately after it's played so you might need to practise that.
I don't know why he called it Bodom sucks, he was complaining about how bad they played it and how Roope forgot a part and it was very sloppy.
That's complete bull, that played it perfectly fine.

Hehe, expect it later.
I'm going to record I Like Rock off of Burning Organ.
And yep, I just checked, 190bpm! But it's really damn easy for me to play it...
I even changed the solo to one that's faster sounding and I'm going to play everything all in one track, and actually record 5 seperate tracks. :p
Let's just hope I can play it all in time each time eh?

I'm thinking about getting this Dean 7 string vendetta, with x2n in the bridge from a dude on mx. He accepted my offer for 150.

I'll record it later when I get back from going out on my bike. Heh, sometimes I don't even practise at all.
Kurrpt: 150 is pretty cheap for a decent guitar, I'd say go for it, especially if you'd be getting a 7 string back.

thanks, yeah i just worked that out, its goes like
S....S.....S..S
D +rest+ A D(delay)
dunno if that makes sense, but basically the note played, echoes every 3rd 16th beat.

unknownsoldier12
09-26-2006, 04:51 PM
perturbed ; angry; losing your composure ; full of rage ; livid (just from the top of my head)

Ghosts Revenge
09-26-2006, 04:54 PM
hm... but i still don't know what you wanted to say through this....
26months ago... holly ****... you learnt all this stuff in such a short time?! did you have played another instrument before or some theory?
unknownsoldier12
09-26-2006, 04:56 PM
not at all...
I have an obcessive nature when it comes to things I'm truely interested in. For me, it was all about breaking down my technique, and rebuilding.
I think i've done that about 40 times now. I should have kept track, but every time i take 2 steps back, i always wind up learning something new, or realizing something that just helps me get better overall.
I don't have some misguided pipe dreams. I know i will eventually "not suck"
edit : what I was trying to say about that "getting bent out of shape" was that you making this realization, to me, seems like you should have arrived at that conclusion previously, and were some how getting upset over it. I was saying that for your age, compare that to mine, and it should make you feel better
Every time i make that big JUMP in terms of progression, it always seems like the stupidest detail I've over looked countless times. Any time I make that realization, I do feel a little stupid
Ghosts Revenge
09-26-2006, 05:04 PM
you can be proud of yourself breaking your technique down every time and start rebuilding it... not everyone has the nerves to do so.
i for myself want to progress and be able to say "i don't suck", and i won't suck... never.... but give me some more time :p

I recorded that song. Different method though, not 5 tracks, just the 2 rhythms and another one in the middle imitating the vocal line. I also tried doubling the solo an octave higher but it sounded too empty and kinda weird so I scrapped that. I dno if I want you to hear it though, it's kinda crappy.

I don't use sheet music to read from but it's useful for transcribing string concertos and stuff. Also, if you're trying to put piano music onto guitar and the only avaliable source is the sheet music, it helps to be able to read it for obvious reasons.
You don't sound like the kind of person that would use it alot or want to need to understand it, you're probably wasting your time.
unknownsoldier12
09-29-2006, 11:02 AM
sheet music is easier to understand the theory behind the writing, as well as recognizing the key that the peice is in, and also gives you the rhythmic feel of the song, even though you may have never heard it.
Sheet music is WAY more descriptive than tab

I can't remember actually, I think it was 9/10 or something. I'm going to have to find out because he said he started playin fast after 8 years. 10 + 8 = 18 which is when he was in Racer X so that confuses me.
OK he started playing at 5 but soon gave up and started again at 11. By 15, he was in Racer X and was in guitar magazines for being recognised because he was amazing. :upset: wtf

Yeah I know I will, I just wish I'd started earlier.
I don't think you should say you'll never be good because it just takes time and dedication and I've already put that in so far but I'm slacking lately.
I've noticed all the good bands nowadays have older musicians.
Racer X, Necrophagist, Symphony X, Bodom, Dragonforce, Nevermore.
That's just a few from my collection of favourites and I know there's loads more but you get the point. I think Trivium are doing well at a young age but the guitarists aren't amazing. Alexi was better at that age. At 21, he was writing/playing FtR or something.

i always was interested in music, but i had a teacher from which i started to hate it... my dad was playing classical guitar and i first picked it up at 10, then at 14 again, but he never was a good teacher, neither he wanted to show me anything. the third time i picked it up was wiht 18 (about 1yrs after i quit music-education with my teacher ^^) and teached it myself. my dad showed my only some chords and after a while showed my some sabbath and zeppelin riffs.
yes, and it takes time... PG played 9 yrs to get where he was 1986!
what do you mean by older musicians? so that they started writing music when they were 24?
Alexi recorded Something Wild with 18...
btw. i'm not sure but i think my wrist is getting better... maybe i will pick the guitar up again next week :D
edit: i don't know if you already did, but you should check out more of Michael Romeos style! you will love him!

No I don't mean older as in that, I mean the good bands TODAY are a lot older than the emp/scene bands that consist of 14 year olds.
My wrist was hurting today actually, but then again, I was going too fast on purpose so I stopped.
I don't like Symphony X that much tbh. I like Romeo's style but I'm not a fan of prog bands. They have some great riffs but I can't listen to a whole song.

I still can't touch Racer X though.

Agreed. I dropped the class, but I'll work on Major/Minor scales when I've got some spare time. I picked up German instead, since I need that anyways.
I've been trying out the intro(and plan to learn the entire song) SNBN. I think the hardest thing I've played.

Unfortunately, that's true. It's a shame he messes up sometimes because his solos are really well written but he did play really well on TW. :) He always seems to play SNBN really well too, the arpeggio interlude part.

Yeah I agree. You can actually practise getting worse. It's a fact that like only 2 minutes is taken in properly or something like that. And that's concentrating on anything for long periods of time, that's why you should practise different things during a 10 hr guitar practise session.
Fortunately, I know how to practise and always stay clean.
I timed myself yesterday and I played this lick for 5 minutes straight, 6 notes per beat at 60bpm:
E-----------12--------
B-12-13-15----15-13--
That was so boring, and I really suck at it. :(

Po0sH
10-01-2006, 11:19 PM
I have the patience to practice, because I know I am getting better you know. When I practice, I am always working on techniques on learning new things, instead of just playing riffs that I already know how to play perfectly. I enjoy practicing. The thing is, I can never practice 10 hours because I go to a hard school(in the top 100 high schools of America) and i have a hard class(Calculus AP) that kills my time.
In fact, high school has pretty much killed a lot of my practicing time. Sometimes I wonder like if I am gonna be 40 and I will still be unknown, would I have made it if I went to an easier high school and got to just stay home and practice 24/7 like my guitar heroes did. Anyone else in the same situation?
Crickets On A Plane
10-02-2006, 02:38 AM
I agree & disagree with the "practice making you worse" arguement.
On the one hand: (Myself)
I play 2 to 4 hours a day.
I don't "practice right" very often.
I'll take an hour sometimes(couple times a week) and work on various picking or playing techniques. Just random riffs or make stuff up. I've gotten a ton better at picking inbetween strings(Like Petrucci showed in that video which I forget the name of) It's quite difficult, but I'm decent with it. (pause for lols) I actually practice the intro/a bit into MoP for downpicking since it's damn good practice. Just whatever for alt picking.
I play with focus on playing clean. Picking & fingering.
A lot of crap, but I never play to a click. I play along with a song until it's "right".
Good:
Any playing (properly) is better than none
I've gotten a lot better just through expierence of playing over time.
It obviously takes time to do *insert w/e* at whatever higher level.
Bad
I've neglected a major flaw in my picking technique for ages now. Starting tomorrow I'm going to correct it. Never "practicing out of this" has really engrained it in my playing.
The flaw: Take Bodom Beach Terror chrous for an example.
The chords leading up and then the lead.
When I'm playing something on the DGC strings and switch to the FAD strings my hand can get caught in no man's land. Flat out missing the strings. It's only with BBT chorus or Mask Of Sanity. (The way I've always played the intro lead(different from Mitch's tab I believe) and that's it.
It never happened on the Blood And Thunder leads. Even though it's only with those two CoB parts, it still needs to be fixed. As I start playing tougher material, it'll burn me then.

Actually, no.
but yeah MRDuCran, what do you do to practice then?

Clean as in no mistakes/not sloppy.
If you think about it, when you're practising, there's no problem staying accurate because YOU control the speed you play at. Start getting sloppy? Turn the metronome down so there's no excuse for when people say ahh I was playing so sloppy, it's their own fault because they weren't listening to their body.
unknownsoldier12
10-02-2006, 08:57 AM
the fact is, when you make a mistake, its from lack of focus, really. You might 'forget' where your picking hand is, or just not take notice to how the pick is really making contact with the string itself.
As far as practice goes, randomly playing riffs and along to CDs won't help you progress nearly as much as a regimented practice session with goals and a metronome. Organized practice sessions help you make goals and build towards them. There is a plan in mind and you are working towards it.
I've been obcessed with proper practice for some time now. The thing is, it's something that is constantly redefined as you progress as a musician and a guitar player.

Heh my practise "sessions" are so far from organised. I sit down, pick upa piece of paper with some tabs on it and just play it for 10 mins and get bored.
I suck.
unknownsoldier12

you're better than the majority here, so what would that say for them
I wouldn't say I always organized, in that I may not know what ill be practicing an hour, or 20 minutes from now, but I will always try to have a goal in mind, or what I want to accomplish while I'm practicing

I try to play as much as I can, but a lot of the time I dont have the energy to. I feel great when I work out a new riff that sounds good - I consider it a good session if I do. Im useless with solos though.

it seems that i'm most organised and play some licks for 30min sometimes... but thats on the other side bad, cause after a while i start hating special licks

you're probably just going about them in the wrong manner...
what solo do you want to learn? I'm sure we could easily coach you through it :D

10-02-2006, 01:41 PM
I was thinking about learning a bunch or Racer X solos. Since I can play through most of Alexi's, I thought I'd move on and give me something else to practise. But then I thought, all the 80's solos were based off of all the licks I already know so I should just concentrate on working on those instead and when I go to learn the solos, it'll be easy to put together.
unknownsoldier12
10-02-2006, 01:52 PM
maybe do something completely different. If those alexi solos are reminiscent of those solos from the 1980s, I'd recommend doing something completely different, or something you are not used to doing
MRDuCran
10-02-2006, 02:15 PM
Well they're kinda different. Most of Alexi's solos use 16th note patterns or just have runs played in 16ths whereas alot of Racer X is mid tempo which calls for 16th note triplet stuff instead.
I already know how to play tonnes of Gilbert licks, I just don't actually know any of the solos from the albums so it wouldn't be that different, I'm just getting frustrated that I can't get certain licks up to speed.
unknownsoldier12
10-02-2006, 02:32 PM
that's everyone's problem mate
for me, i stopped caring about getting it up to speed, as opposed to getting it perfect, and using the least amount of energy possible.
It seems the more I try to get it perfect, the better I realize how to speed it up.
A lot of times, it will also point out what, in particular, gives you the trouble, or what is stopping you from getting it up to speed

Well in this lick:
e-----------12---------
b-12-13-15----15-13--
It's the string cross.
I have never been able to do it and I've been practising it on and off for roughly 2 years.
unknownsoldier12
10-02-2006, 02:41 PM
instead of practicing every one of the notes, focus on the 15 12 15 bit (with the string cross)
You need to focus on inside/outside picking
edit : i could easily make up some licks or whatever that really focus on the problem area.

I didn't say it was hard, I said I can't get it up to a decent speed at all.
I know I should focus on the string cross, I'm gna start really working on it.

you should really practice it both ways....
you should be doing it both ways. try down up down (15 12 15) and up down up (15 12 15)
you could practice it repcak's way, but that style of economy picking is actually slower...
if you wanted to do proper economy picking you COULD do it down down up, but again, you would run into the same problem

I only practise it strict alternate picking starting with a down (outside picking)
unknownsoldier12
10-02-2006, 02:53 PM
well, obviously i would incorporate economy of motion, if thats what you favor.
I like to get reference points in my head as to the best way to pick the strings individually. Ill even practice that for a few minutes until i have EXACTLY how I would down stroke on the 15s, and the upstroke on the 12th.
At that point, it's all about having that change come through when you speed it up.
Also, if you are having problems with outside picking, come up with some licks that are all about string crossing/outside picking
Most people favor outside picking, hence the fact I like to practice both in tandem.

i'd just go alternate all the way. if you start on down, that gives you inside-out picking which is easier than outside-in

unknownsoldier12

inside picking is faster (considering you cover a smaller distance) but it gives people more problems, generally
as far as people "having a problem" with that riff ----->
it all depends on the speed to which your technique starts breaking down, and the syncopation between the two hands are compromised

I'm not saying. :upset:
I can play stuff on one string, 6 notes per beat at 130bpm but on different strings it's more like 110bpm, and that's PG type perfect. But that's when I'm WARMED UP!! Usually, I can hit 80/90 if I concentrate...which isn't great.

Yeah but that was all on one string and I can do that stuff pretty easily, I just haven't worked on going through the strings enough.
I can do it, I just need to get to the point where that's easy too. Actually I was playing loads of 3 notes per string exercises the other night at 70bpm with ease, just going through everything and seeing if I could do it. So at last I know I'm there for sure.

Yeah that's what I want to start doing. Hopefully I'll get the whole day to do it.
I was thinking about Paul Gilbert and how quick he got good.
He started again at 9 after giving up at 6 and then got good and appeared in guitar magazines when he was 15...he got like that in 6 years...that's amazing.
He was then a guitar teacher at GIT when he was 18.

unknownsoldier12
10-03-2006, 03:46 PM
its probably the key of the music that is off, or doens't mesh well...
give me an example and I can see if it helps
You could also jot down a list of the notes you are playing in C#m, and just use a different mode, which is what I would do. It would be the same notes, just arranged differently.
If you wanted to keep the same intervals, you might have to change up the notes

If you want to transpose the whole section into F from C#, move it up 4 frets. That's the easy way.

back on topic for a second...
It seems the more I listen to Hatecrew, Deathroll, the harder it is for me to decide which one i like more :/
mitch : that post wasn't to belittle Paul Gilbert, or anything he has accomplished. If anything, it was to rationalize his ability, and basically let everyone know that if they were dedicated enough, they could easily attain that level...

That is very true, actually. It's a shame there's hardly anyone to look up to who are that age nowadays. I mean, it's Trvium and Dragonforce who are in the spotlight at the moment and neither of them can really impress me live at all, and that's what it's all about to me. I know I wouldn't be able to do any better now but if I was in their shoes, I'd want to be able to play alot better.
I think I'm going back into education next year so it's kinda psyched me up to practise more so I can be the Paul Gilbert of the place I choose, I really want to impress people. Then with a full degree, I'll probably go be a teacher somewhere.

I tend to agree (as far as having role models)
it's a dream of mine to just play guitar all day and get better. If that means i have to teach little kids to do so, then so be it
I always wanted to have the SRV approach, where no one knows who you are, yet everyone wants to find out because you kick arse
MRDuCran
10-03-2006, 04:29 PM
You don't have to teach little kids, you could go teach in a place like GIT if you had the qualifications. Then you'd be in a place where there's 200 guitarists that are all really really good at different things, plus it'd be much more mature and organised. That's what I want to do, and/or teach theory.

Eh I suppose. You'd need to know quite a bit so you don't get shown up or proven wrong by half the students. One of the teachers at my old college was like that, he just knew everything. Hopefully he'll be there if I choose to go back there.
