lol Bodom has horrendus lyrics anyway. No offense to Alexi but he writes terrible lyrics. And I can understand most of what he says after listening to harsh vocals for long enough. Personally, I think harsh vocals pale in comparison to good clean vocals like Maiden, but I think bands like Wintersun do an excellent job of mixing them.
Thank you

What album's that? I'm not into black metal, and as a result never got into Dimmu, but I'd like to hear some stuff by the band before making a judgement on them.
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. It's like a really atmospheric Cradle of Filth album. Very unique melodies.
Their early stuff was very symphonic, but hardly worth of being labeled "black" metal. Their new stuff...is just bad. It's like they'd rather have a blesphemous image and use an orchestra than actually play their instruments.

I always found Maiden's vocals a tad irritating...
My preference of vocals: female singers in metal. No matter how they sing, they pull it off great.
My thoughts exactly. Just replace female singers with...most anything (not big on female vocals, unless it's Arch Enemy). Preferrably early Bodom/Norther/black metal shrieking.

:amaze:
I rather liked Death Cult Armageddon...i thought they used the orchestra to great effect. It enhances quite a few of their songs.
And image is the whole ****ed point of black metal. Without the image, black metal would be a whole lot worse. It's as important a function as the style of music.
Female singers?
Like Otep?
Kind of a crappy example, but yes. Better example would be Nightwish.

Here's your basic Bodom lyrics breakdown:
1. It always involves either the Bodom murders, death, pain, or something pointy
2. Expect to hear curses in the song. (these you can always pick out)
There you go. Now you're all set. :thumb:
EDIT: He could always try traditional power metal...
Bodom with power metal lyrics.....that would be priceless
But I sincerely hope they never do that lol, the epic/Tolkein/flowery?/dragons&swords thing wouldn't work for them. At all.

You guys need a crash course...(**** I've been saying that a lot).
Try Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Estuary, Lunatica or Flowing Tears for some decent vocals.
Also, The Gathering and Elfonia work rather nicely too...although they aren't as metal, they still kick epic ***.
EDIT: Me too...come to think of it, i do most of my guitar playing on the computer.

But that's my point! Dimmu Borgir is not black metal!!! They can have whatever the hell image they want, but it doesn't change the music. They opt to go for symphonic music, but I think in DCA they went too far with the orchestra and sort of forgot that they're supposed to play metal with their blasphemy.

Maybe I Alexi just played lead and they found a new singer someone between David Dramer (disturbed) and Jesse Leech(killswitch engaged)...I don't know it's just a thought.
.....
Those two singers are pretty bad. Bodom wouldn't be Bodom without Alexi singing.
Anyway, i'm currently downloading the new Warmen album.

From the bands you listed, it sounds like it's the clean/operatic female vocals that bug you. Try Arch Enemy, Angela Gassow's vocals are awesome (she growls by the way), good enunciation and a lot of variation. Well growling I like some better than others but when it comes to harsh vocals like Bodom, Wintersun, Norther, their vocals all sound extremely similar.

Fender bought out Jackson and Jacksons have been consistently downhill ever since. Even cheap Jacksons back in the day were excellent instruments, but now even the expensive ones will have a blatant lack of craftsmanship. But that doesn't mean they don't own every other brand of guitar out there right now.

Carlo Robelli has some nice sound, youll probably get some beef over it , Other wise another cheap or I should say inexspensive guitar is a brownsville, actually the bat is the only one that sounds good.

I like Yngwie a lot, but I agree that he plays fast too much, he needs some slower songs, like more Black Star- like songs.
Slow solos impress me more than fast ones, just because they have more time to leave an impact on you. Like Comfortably Numb gives me chills when I hear the end solo, but COB stuff gives a quick wow that guys good, and that's it til you hear it again.

Alright, if you have an arpeggio like this:
E--------14-18p-14---------------------------
B-----16-----------16--------------------- Repeat
G--15-----------------------------------
You downpick the 15, 16, and 14 with a solid motion. It's almost like strumming a chord, but each note is played seperately. You up-pick the 18 and then pull off to the 14, and up-pick the 16. Then repeat. If you need more help then just ask.

Thanks! I kinda get what you're saying though. You wouldn't happen to have any arpeggio exercises would you?

This just in...
Bodom's genre along with Norther, Kalmah, Skyfire, Imperanon, etc. is no longer Power/Speed with harsh vocals cause thats too hard to say, it is Extreme Power Metal.

I do, and please don't if it's too much trouble. I was just wondering if you had any already tabbed out.

Here you go:

NOTES:
The positions of the arpeggios are just examples made to help develop your technique, you can move them up or down to wherever you want. I'd suggest trying them all over the fretboard.
Make sure you mute the note right before you play the next one.
Don't forget to keep your picking very smooth and fluent. Don't force yourself to pick hard, just let it glide over the strings.
I'll make more lessons whenever you feel comfortable doing these.

Thanks a lot; really appreciated. I can always use this stuff. I've just started doing some classical guitar stuff, and fingerpicking arpeggios are the only ones I know.

You're welcome. Don't forget to stay in perfect time and keep the notes clean. Distortion usually helps with cleaning up the muting part of it.

That's where I'm at. I'm learning the part of Bed of Razors right now thats way up to the 19th, and my guitar is squaking all over the place. It sounds ok though. Playing fast is the hard part. I lowered the timing on Bed of Razors on GuitarPro from 137 to 105. :p I'm probably at 115 now though.
John - did Josh make your avatar? It's awesome! :thumb:
Bam Margera. Yeah. That pissed me off. Now all these Bam-boppers are going to love Children of Bodom. *puke* Christ, I hope not.
I see what you're saying, cause they don't really care about the music, but it might not be so bad, maybe listening to CoB will introduce them to good music...as opposed to the pop punk most of them are into.

My God, sweep picking is such a pain in the ***. It makes me wonder how much they've practiced them when guys like Alexi can sweep up and down constantly.

I'm pretty novice at sweep picking. I'm ok at 3 string sweeps, and I can do 5 string sweeps one direction.

I'm not too bad at it. I've been practicing several sweep picking arpeggios for some time now and I'm starting to get the hang of it. I've been sweeping across all six strings as well as changing directions, but I've still got a ways to go before I can sweep like most metal guys can.

I'm not sure I want to work on sweeping at all. I mean it sounds really cool but as far as the songs I write idk if it'd fit. I guess it could open some new doors so I should try it out.

I would use it sparingly if I tried to really write songs. I only practice them as much as I do because many bands I love use it quite a bit, and as a guitarist, I'd like to master as many aspects of the instrument as I can.

Yeah. I like him though. I think Slayer writes some good, memorable riffs. As for the solos, I think you can guess, but other than that, I like him.

Wow the greatest thing just happend to me...
I listened to the Hatebreeder album, and it sounded like the first time I've ever listened to it. That happens every once in a while with something for me, and it is just the most amazing feeling in the world. It was like a completely new thing. And I still whole heartedly agree that it is the best Bodom album, I'm listening to FTR now and it's not living up to Hatebreeder. Black Widow is a severely underrated track btw.

Yeah, I didn't mean it really. He may have pointless feuds and he just can't say sorry it seems, but I've heard from others he's a really cool guy, and he's in an awesome band.

in the last few bars it would be simpler to hammer from the D# to the G, rather than picking the G and pulling off to the D#.
Also the way youve written it makes the sweep harder, and in the 3 note pattern kinda destroys the movement. I can explain further if you want.

I love it when that happens. That happened to me a little while ago when I was only listening to Hatebreeder and Hate Crew Deathroll, and I put on Follow the Reaper. It was great. I'd forgotten how much I loved that album.
