i suppose that most of you guitar player practise with a metronome... and to see how you progress do you write down how fast you can play something on day xy?
i practise a lot of different licks, scales, riffs etc. and each of them i play in a different speed and i don't know where i should write down how fast i can play lick xy.
would like to know how you handle it...
AA-12
06-26-2006, 05:01 PM

MRDuCran
06-26-2006, 05:18 PM
You don't know where...?
A piece of paper...
I have a powertab of alternate picking exercises I need to print out and when I do, I'll write the speeds underneath each bar. Even if I scribble something down I'll stick the tempos underneath it in usually a red pen.

I usually start at 40bpm on every exercise, but I don't write "40" everytime I practise.
I'll always have the highest tempo on there, so if day one I hit 120, and day 2 I hit 110, I won't write anything down on the 2nd day.

i spend far too much time in front of the computer. i have to change it... to print all the exercises would be a good idea. in two weeks i will be at home again and the computer there is soooo slow, so i will use it only as a metronome.

It's called the ESP LTD MMV SN. I have one, and it took me forever to find. It's a pretty nice guitar for the money, but it could use some better pickups. There's no real intermediate price level. It goes from affordable to hella expensive, but they just released a new model, so it may have changed.

If you're asking me, which you are...I'd say no. Just because everyone else has trouble, it shouldn't mean you should take a break or give up. Practise that one more if anything and get better than everyone else at it. If it's a weak spot, don't leave it like that, turn it into a strong point. Same goes wih anything.
You should practise all the shapes equally. I usually join them all up without stopping and try just improvising using anything.

I have a DXMG. The access isn't good. I have to use my ring finger and angle my hand. It would be nice if it had a cutaway but it doesnt. It's not too horribly unbearable because I don't use the 24th much, but it can get a little annoying.

Yeah it's a music channel. I wasn't sure where it was shown.
Yeah the Sonic Mazimizer is cool. I haven't worked with it too much but I've basically opened it up and set it to guitar and left it at that, it looks pretty limited in terms of tone. It seems to me that the first 2 dials are bass and treble on an amp to me. Is it just an extension?

Not sure what you mean by extension.
But, definitely not the main tone shaping tool. I use it basically as a touch up. After I'm done recording a song I just run it through that to give it more presance. The "process" knob is basically a presance knob, and does add treble. The low contour is obviously just bass. The only thing I don't like about it is that it gives kindof a "scooped" sound, but I haven't tried adding more mids afterward yet cause I'm at my dad's.
MRDuCran

What I meant by extension what you explained as a "touch up" so we both meant the same thing.
An extension of what the amp does, i.e gives you treble, bass settings etc.
I think that presense knob comes in handy actually. I think I'm using it on all the guitar tracks on my recording of Bleeding Mascara by Ateryu that I just finished so I'll definately get some use out of it.

I think I already mentioned, that I had to learn it for a performance I was supposed to be doing today (it's now 08:20 Wednesday morning for moi) but the fukking thing got cancelled.
It's a good song for showing off because for me, it's easy and sounds hard. Haha I watched some kids on youtube playing the intro, fukk it's BAD.
But anyway, since I learnt the whole thing, I thought I might as well record it so then people will think I'm god lawl.
I was messing around with Cool Edit Pro 2 a few nights ago and found that you can mess around with the pitch of a recorded wave file, i.e guitar riff or vocal.
You could record Nile in drop D, and drop it another 5 semitones without touching your tuning pegs, and it'd probably sound pretty close, depending on your original tone of course. And Sixpounder.
Also, you can record a half arsed scream, add distortion, echo, reverb, chorus, and drop it 7 semitones and sound like Lord Worm. :)
I did one and it sounds like that scream in the beginning of Crown of Thorns.
I hope you notice my sexy paragraphs.

Well I definitely love the neck, compound radius. Most people don't like the EMG HZ's, but I personally think they are fine. The fret access is a little weak, but bearable I guess. When I first got it, the little thing that holds the whammy bar jack kept coming loose, then I would have to open up the back and tighten it, but after awhile it stopped doing that. I'd look at some reviews, cause it's the highest end guitar I've played. So in my hands, it feels like gold, but if I have played one of the Soloist models for example, I'm sure I wouldnt be praising it as much. But from my standpoint, it is a great guitar. Definitely worth buying :)

I want a Jackson, but I want to play one before I get anything. I've never played a Jackson before.
Right now we have a Ken Parker guitar sitting here. It is one of the most bizarre things I've ever played...the body's made out of some plasticky substance. The whole thing weighs less than 5 pounds, and it's got 2 humbuckers and a piezo pickup. Which basically means you can get both electric and acoustic sounds out of it.

Nah the FR is great. But adjusting springs etc on stage might not be the best idea. But, we haven't needed to play Drop C live so its all good.
I picked up an acoustic today :D
It's an Alvarez, never heard of them before, but its really nice. It was originally about $690 or so, but I got it (and a hardshell case) for $390. It was marked half price cause it was an "almost perfect" guitar. Meaning there's a slight imperfection in it (I have yet to find it) so they won't sell for full price. It's acoustic/electric so I can record nicely with it too. I would have pics, but I don't own a camera...

No nasty dents, and there is nothing wrong with it that I can tell. The guy there said sometimes they put them on "almost perfect" even if they just buffed a spot too much of something. But, a $690 guitar for $390 = good deal no matter what the "imperfection" might be.

Aren't you into metalcore and stuff like AILD/KSE/etc? Those bands play in CGCFAD, most anyways.
So you just convert the power chords to barre chords?

Yea thats exactly what we do. Right now we only know 2 songs in Drop C. Rest are in Drop D. We picked out some new covers to do, which are in Drop C, but right now we have to write more originals. So by the time we need to start doing Drop C songs in Drop C, we will have the money to buy "Drop C guitars".
Songs we might do are World Ablaze by Killswitch Engage and Ordinary story by In Flames :) I know Ordinary Story is probably in C standard, but it sounds really really easy, so playing it in Drop C shouldn't be a problem.

Those aren't insanely technical tunes. FFWF is just fast. Master Of Puppets is boring... Whiplash is fast from what I remember. Blackened is boring... Creeping Death is boring.... St anger? heh. I needed a laugh.

I don't even like them as much as I used to but there's no denying that they're one of the most influential bands in the world ever along with Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Led Zepplin and all them lot.

For the record: I alt picked MoP. As I do with ALMOST everything. I down pick the AYDY intro though.
I can't remember playing or saying I played Battery. I can't remember what Disposable Heroes sounds like, same for Dyers Eve.
I don't want to argue on "influential", I agree obviously with Black Sabbath. They were the first "heavy metal" band. From the reading I've done.
I used to listen to Van Halen, though not in a while. I should dl a few albums. heh.
The st anger made me laugh though. That's one of the worst albms I've ever heard. The song is among the worst on it.
While we're on subject of downpicking.

Putting their music aside, they're terrible people. I'm not just talking about the napster thing. That was very understandable. It's where they've taken it. (IE, sueing a swedish steel mining company because the swedish word for metal(ha kinda what steel is ) was "to close to metallica". I have an idea. Don't pick such a generic band name and act like you're 40something, not 5 year olds accusing the other kids of "copying him". I hate Lars mostly, though I have no soft spots for any of them.
I don't care what Mitch says on this one. He's normally right on with guitar stuff. I think he's very wrong on this.
EDIT: To Julianne. Not really.
I mean. When you make (the song or album for that matter) St. Anger a point in your arguement, you've seriously run out of gas.

And I suspected you played MoP with alternate picking, I can't play it with downstrokes either.
Yeah repcak, they have played Dyers Eve live. I don't know if they played 3-4-3-4-3-4 at 250 or whatnot, but they certainly played the whole thing without stopping. It's on video google.

The notes on the fretboard lol, I thought you meant the notes for Dyers Eve.
Um, I learn the notes in like my first month of playing, so I can't remember.
I worked it out with common sense. Every open string is its name (eadgbe), every 12th fret is the same (eadgbe). Every 5th fret is the same as the open string above (adgce - except the 5th on G string which is C instead of B, but then you remember that, so 4th on G = B)
Then just go from there. 1st fret is obviously going to be one note higher than the open string, so you kinda jsut know after a while. I never sat down and thought, I'm going to learn the notes.

3-4 over and over at 250 isn't technical. Just fast and stupid.

I didn't say there was anything wrong, but not many people can play it with only downstrokes.
And it's not 3-4 over and over, it's like 4 or 8 notes and that's it. I'm not going to continue because it's pointless.

Meh, this is why it's better to like the music, and not the people behind it. I love Metallica, one of my faves. I'm not in any place to say what kind of people they are and such because I do not know them, and as far as I'm concerned no one on this board does.
Metallica has made some good music over the years, whether you like it or not, I'd have trouble believing anyone who likes metal would really think it's bad music. Most people that do only do because they are scared of becoming cliche because Metallica is so popular.
Meh, there I said it. I couldn't let it rest without giving my 2 cents.
edit:
After reading my post I thought I should say this: Good or bad (music) is far different from like/dislike. If you think about it.

Here's a list of hard **** I've failed at playing, since you prolly would like to hear.
The lead intro to Splintered Visions by Into Eternity.
Necrophagist- several songs stabwound and seven are the ones I remember
The arrpegio in Nemesis - Arch Enemy. I actually got that. It seriously took a month to learn and the song wasn't that fun to play, so I stopped.
There's a few things I can't think of. Basically sweeps and lightning fast leads/solo

Yes I understand they are very technical, but technicality is not all that matters in music to me, and I'm sure not to you either. I was just making a joke about them because I don't like their general sound. By saying "to each his own" I meant that I think they are utter crap, not that they are utter crap. I give Cannibal Corpse credit because they are good musicians for what they play, whether I like the sound of it or not. And like you, I'm not intending to start a flame war or anything, I was just joking around.
And for the record:
Children Of Bodom, Norther, Kalmah, Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, In Flames, Wintersun, Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, Shadows Fall, Mors Principium Est, Iced Earth, Pantera, Racer X/Paul Gilbert, Opeth, Dark Tranquility, Black Label Society, Dio, Slayer, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Cradle Of Filth, Arch Enemy, and Amon Amarth are all metal that isnt metalcore.
I hope I didn't seem like I was being a douche bag or anything, just joking around as I usually do.

Fukk yes. Nooo way in hell I'd have a chance at that. I can play the first parts of the wretched spawn, but that's not very fast. chords plus a riff.
Cradle Of FIlth isn't metal. 'tis mallcore. Shadows Fall is NWONAHM or w/e it's called. aka more polished/skilled metalcore. Pantera isn't special. BLS= PH PH PH PH boring riff PH PH PH PH bad vox attempt PH PH PH and another PH!

Can I play fine in most? Sure. I just listen to the song and play w/e til I have it. I don't need a couple numbers telling me "do this".

I don't need an amp, I don't have enough for an amp, so I'm not going to work my arse off just to get an amp, because I make sure my playing sounds good through the one I have at the moment. As soon as I have enough for decent one, I'll probably get one unless there's something else that's more important, obviously.
