I think Silent Scream was a good cover, but Don't Stop At the Top and Hellion were both pretty bad. Aces High was terrible except the remade solos which were exceptionally great I think.

that's awesome that you were able to record those solos and do a decent job with them lemondaine, but do you think you'd be able to post them, minus the keys?

Off the topic of Bodom but, I just Sign of the Cross by Iron Maiden. I have the Rock in Rio DVD where they do it live and it is amazing, but on the studio album Blaze Bayley is the singer and I had never heard him before, he is horrendus! It's like a really really stale Bruce Dickinson.

Taken from Scythes of Bodom...
"Now the surprise track of the upcoming single "In Your Face" has been revealed. It will be a cover of the Britney Spears song "Oops I Did It Again".
A total of two cover songs were recorded during the "Are You Dead Yet?" session. The second cover song will be used as bonus track for the Japanese version of the album.
In other news a live DVD of the Wacken festival in 2004 will be released next Monday. Children Of Bodom will be featured on it with the live version of their song, Sixpounder, which was already shown on German TV in 2004.
Next Saturday the band will play a secret gig in Berlin, Germany. Only chosen persons will have entrance to the concert.
On September 9th Children Of Bodom will play a gig in Québec, Canada with Trivium and Amon Amarth."
Is this true? Bodom is covering Britney Spears for the In Your Face single? Bizarre...

What?!? CoB?? Brittany Spears???
This is too funny...
It was probably Janne's suggestion. On Scythes of Bodom it said that one of the songs he enjoys playing is Oops, and that it's not really the song he likes....it's Brittany. But now they're actually going to cover it?
CoB never ceases to shock me.

Wow, I just discovered that Oops I Did It Again was a cover of a Louis Armstrong song. I am severely confused because that doesn't seem like something he'd sing, or Britney Spears cover. The lyrics are like gay 21st century pop, why would Louis Armstrong have written them in like the 60s?

Probably because of songs like Sixpounder. That song is based around heavy ruffage, which is the opposite of the all-lead-guitar style that Bodom used to devote themselves too. They take it as a sign of the band changing, and many think they're going downhill.
But then there are always those jackasses who think that whenever a band remotely changes their style it's immediately dubbed as "selling out". I hate those people with a firey passion.

You get togo to bed as early as 1:00? I usually put off playing guitar for so long that by the time I'm finished, it's about 2:00-3:00. At least I get to see Conan.

Anyway, I've really been getting into Finnish power metal. I might just make a thread on it. I found an awesome band who's basicaly very early Bodom (EXTREMELY neo-classical) with a slight Norther feel. Very damn cool.
Wow, this is the first time I've been on since Friday, and I saw my posts from them....how horribly embarrassing lol, next time I get home from a bar, I'll go to bed, and avoid making an *** out of myself.

I don't know how many of you know of the band Imperanon, but I just discovered them. They've only released one album so far ("Stained") but they are extremely good Finnish neoclassical power metal. Take elements of Follow the Reaper-era Bodom and combine that with the atmosphere and vocal style of Norther. I'm in the process of downloading their album right now.

Imperanon is great. I got heard about them around the same time I heard about Norther, Wintersun and Kalmah. I tend to compare them, as they are alike in some ways, if not the genre. I'd have to say that Kalmah is my favorite of the group, but they are all good. I love Blade (Imperanon)...great song.
EDIT: Speaking of summer, my summer has pretty much sucked since I got back from Italy. There have been highlights; going to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with friends, seeing my best friend yesterday, and playing loads of guitar, but that's it. Unfortunately, two of my best friends live far away from me, and the other I've grown apart from, so I haven't really hung out with anyone all that much. It gets lonely, let me tell you.
I can't say that I have a favorite CoB album because they are all great. It depends what mood I am in. Lately I have been listening to Hatebreeder a whole lot and really enjoying it.

I'm not really an imperanon fan, I think they have good potential later on, but the harsh vocals don't fit at all. It sounds liek straight power metal unlike Bodom who has speed metal elements, and sometimes the cheesy upbeat melodies and the harsh vocals really don't mix at all.
But on a different note....
I went to Ozzfest yesterday, and it was AWESOME! I got there after the 2nd stage was ending becuase I didn't care about any of those bands, and I sat down in my seat and waited for about half an hour until In Flames came on. They did a pretty bad job, it was hard to hear the guitar, and they didn't play any old songs, and the new stuff was pretty crappy.
Next came Black Label Society, and by that point, the whole entire lawn behind me turned into a giant mud fight. It was literally raining mud and the back row of the pavilion where I was got all caught up in it, and you couldn't watch the concert unless you were contempt with being hit iwth mud every once in a while. I maybe caught 1 song of BLS, I think it was Suicide Messiah, and they did pretty good. I was too caught up in the mud fight to really pay attention.
When Shadows Fall came out, the mud thing was dying down a bit and I wanted to watch the show. They were a band who I think is ok, and pretty good as far as new american metal goes, but they were amazing live. I liked their stuff studio and thought it was decent but when they played live they just did amazing. I really liked how Jon Donais did especially with the solos. I went and got something to eat before Mudvayne came on, and there was this fence blocking off the backstage. The fence was broken into 2 parts, with a 3 inch or so crack inbetween, and I looked in and saw Brian Fair of Shadows Fall. I yelled his name, and he looked around and couldn't see where it was coming from, I yelled again and this stupid guy who works there told me to leave. I was so close to talking to him!
I went back and sat down while Mudvayne was playing and it was so terrible! The fat lead singer was in some black jumpsuit and he had this gay makeup on, and he cannot sing it was horrendus, nor can the guitarist play the guitar. I started booing them and a lot of people joined in, and they said, everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's ok, but I was just satisfied that they acknowledged our boos. They played for way longer than they should have and eventually it was over and the real show would begin...
The mudfight was all over after Mudvayne, and eventually Maiden came out. They started off with Wrathchild, and the bassline in the beginning was cool as usual, but then, nothing else kicked in. Bruce was up their singing but you couldn't hear a thing, same with the guitars and the drums. You could faintly hear the acoustic drums but I guess there was a problem and only the bass was plugged in. I was really worried I thought it was a joke or something. The crowd was even booing them and I felt terrible, I'd never boo Maiden I didn't think it was the right choice of thing to say. Anyway, they went into The Trooper and all of a sudden the volume just kicked in. Bruce ran out with a Lobsterback jacket and a British flag and they totally rocked the place! Bruce sounded a bit weird during the song but it wasn't that noticeable. After the song they apologized for Wrathchild, and said that during the night they'd only be playing things from the first four albums. They did all the classics like Number of the Beast, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run To The Hills, Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden, Revelations, and Running Free. During Number of the Beast, a big devil came out, and when they did the 666 it would flash in big letters on the screen behind them. Eddie came out during Iron Maiden and battled Janick as usual. Anyway the show was just plain amazing and I was screaming my lungs out, I had never seen anything like that.
Sabbath came out about 45 min later and they sounded pretty good. After a few songs it was really boring, and the only one they did exceptional on was Black Sabbath. I left while Ozzy was saying if we cheered really loud they'd do one more song. I really liked what they did with the lighting and such and had some cool moving backdrops.
Overall, Ozzfest was really awesome, between Maiden and a giant mudfight it was so cool. When we left there wasn't a blade of grass left in the lawn.

Mudvayne had a few decent songs...overall, they are kinda bad though.
How'd Bruce sound doing D'Anno's (sp? Iron Maiden's singer from the first 2 albums) parts on his songs? They have 2 different voices...
And yes, from what I've seen, In Flames sounds really crappy live.
Why didn't you go see the second stage? I heard it was better than the first...Arch Enemy was on it, along with a few other good bands.

It's not that I don't like their music, I just have the same problem with them that I do with most every progressive band. They take a good sound and stretch it out WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAYYYY too long. I have Orchid, for instance. I love In Mist She Was Standing...for the first few minutes. They just stretch it out and repeat too much for my taste.
I'd still place Opeth on a higher level than most progressive. Can't get enough of their acoustic stuff. :)

I could too, if there's enough variety. Most Opeth I've heard has the same riffs repeated over and over. Maybe I just need to check out more Opeth. I've heard great things about Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse, but I've never heard it.

Morningrise is good, but not as cracked up as everybody says it is. It really sounds like the band just wrote a lot of random (though superb) riffs and mashed them together to form a song.

Shattered_Future

Morningrise.
It really ISN'T the greatest song ever...parts of it are superb, but on the whole, the song really sounds like a compilation effort. It's a bunch of riffs smashed together to form a song...once a riff is played, it's never played again in the song.
That's part of the reason why I turn away from some Opeth...not enough repetition.
A lot of repetition is horrible, but so is almost none. There has to be a little to really hold my interest.

And, S_F, I get what you mean about repetition. Too much makes a song very boring, but next to none makes a song very unpredictable and random. More like they took ideas for several songs and threw them all into one single track.

I wouldn't say that Children of Bodom's new style is remotely punk. More like the heavier American metal. But they still have many of the same keyboard elements and guitar riffs they used to, so I'm not too disappointed. Are you crazy???? Not only would those vocals not work at all with Bodom's sound, but Alexi IS CoB. Without him screaming the band just wouldn't be CoB anymore (which is a big part of why Synergy isn't the greatest band). Maybe if they worked in some death metal vocals - that might be cool.

Here's your basic Bodom lyrics breakdown:
1. It always involves either the Bodom murders, death, pain, or something pointy
2. Expect to hear curses in the song. (these you can always pick out)
