why do you think that the forum is getting worse? i didn't realized it yet ... i only remember the time in october last year, when there weren't made any good postings and then a mod made a thread "how to improve MX" (or something like that)
and why are all the regulars leaving MX all of sudden? and IF more n00bs come in here, we (the older one) should help them and direct them how to post and to make interesting threads ... don't forget, now we are the elite :p

Not 2, I've been playing for 4. But I don't try and play stuff out of my league, which is one of the things that sets me apart from most guitarists. Sure, I'll try it, but I won't go around claiming I can play it when really it's complete sloppy bullsh!t.
I can only play a few Bodom solos, and they're not even full speed but they are accurate. Well actually, I've learnt most of Alexi's solos.

So true, so true, If I was blessed with 5-string I might attempt, but the bass part to the start of the tune "Warheart" is beyond the speed I can get with finger style, and I can't do any better with pick.
MRDuCran
05-15-2006, 02:14 PM
Couldn't you just tune down to A, and not have a G? I wouldn't know if he uses it or not but that's what I do when I want to play Meshuggah or Nevermore on guitar.
And yeah Warheart is pretty fast, 190ish I think. Whip out the ol' metronome and you should get pretty close.

I learned the riff to Kissing the Shadows on keyboard last night because I was bored.
MRDuCran
05-15-2006, 03:28 PM
Because every cover I hear sucks, in all honesty.
I mean Kissing the Shadows is HARD, if you broke it down bar by bar, people would realise.
Silent Night, Bodom Night, everyone picks that intro bit with tremelo pickign when in fact it's controlled triplets, same with the lead part on the high E string, and the
sweeping bit after, ugh.
What else...
Needled 24/7, that intro solo is also harder than most people make out to be.
-15-12----12-
---------15----
it's all picked perfectly, I have a friend who says he can play it, can he actually play it NO!
I think I'll stop with my bitching now, but of course just as Alexi says in the April Guitar World thing, it's fun to just shred and go crazy, but you need to learn to control yourself and learn when to play fast, and realised when you shouldn't.
Also, covers of Technical Difficulties, Scarified, Street Lethal (Racer X), none of them sound like it would if Paul played it, why? because they go too fast too soon, simple.

sweeping bit after, ugh.

Hey bitches, new FUKKING computer.
You're teacher may think it's at 110ish and playing in sextuplets, which is the 6 note per beat thing you're talkign about. The overall feel of the song would indicate it's around 220, so 3 notes per beat would be more accurate tbh. Both are correct as long as you use the right tempos with each.
I have that video by Jani, he's pretty good but I hate his tone.

Yeah, I don't have much tonal range. I record directly through a Boss ME-50 on the "Loud" pedal option. I don't really know how to mix much, especially with audacity. Are you having more left hand or right hand troubles??
If it's left (fretting), then you should slow it down and alternate pick every note just for the time being and concentrate on getting all the notes sounding good.
If it's right (picking), practise a few more sweep picking exercises to get a better flow.
repcak
05-18-2006, 06:12 PM
both ... i have some problems with sweeping (right hand), because its the first song i learnt which have sweeps.
and left hand.... the intro (because of the big finger-stretch) and pinky on the low e-string... it seems as i hammer on the string, instead of playing it...
the other thing is... i was nervous; and when i made a mistake i had to begin once again... so this was maybe my 100x take. i travel home tomorrow and i hope i will have more time next weekend. then i will try to re-record it.
MRDuCran

First song with sweeping!?!
Damn man, if it was me, I'd stop playing that song, practise THE very basic shapes over and over with a metronome like you're doing so as I said, it will improve the smoothness and flow of your picking. Then go back to it a few months later and you'll probably find it's automatically much easier. Maybe a bit of scale stuff too if you find that stretch difficult. You know, 1234 chromatic crap, and (124)(134)(123)(135) etc on every string.
I just found out that I can play some Paul Gilbert lick about 20 bpm faster than I could since the last time I tried, and it doesn't even seem hard at this speed, so this method definately works for me at least.
*I think* when people spend ages on just one lick or song (i.e Scarified, Speed Kills etc), and are determined to get it up to speed in a week, it makes it sloppier because they feel they have a time limit so they rush. Speed shouldn't be your goal (well, in the end it will be) but accuracy should always come first. Don't worry about recording it if YOU are not ready, don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself man.
repcak
05-18-2006, 08:21 PM
it was the first song with sweeping, true. this song was the reason why i started to learn sweeping, but how you said, i haven't practise them a lot.
i have now troy stetinas "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar" and his exercises are great! i will now start to learn the sweeping exercises from his book.
speed/accuracy: since the last discussions with you and Kurrpt i realized that you are right and i stopped to look at speed anymore, though its more frustrating :p about
kalmah: today i played it for the first time at 80bpm perfectly, but when i started to record it, i got nervous. now after the recording, i realized that i was sloppy and now i think i will slow down once again and analyse the moves more exactly.
time limits: my time limit was to record kalmah at 110bpm in summer... at first i thought i will reach the goal, but how you remember, i once have to relearn the whole song, because i made always the same mistake. therefore it took me longer. after this record i know i won't be able to record it until june (one of the reason is, that i won't have enough time for playing guitar, cause of university) - but i think its realistic to reach my goal sometime in summer... july/august/ at least in september ;)
ps.: the record was made with a headset-mic and with a bad amp-setting (distortion, etc.) + bad guitar-pick ups.
MRDuCran
05-18-2006, 09:17 PM
I've heard good things about that book, but imo, half of the accuracy/skill increase isn't jsut the exercise, it's the WAY you practise that exercise. I mean it is pretty point less to have 235 sweep picking exercises because they ALL involve the sweeping motion, the only difference is where you put your fretting fingers, and if you need to concentrate on that, then the focus on the flow of the right hand will diminish. If you need all the basic shaps to practise, let me know. Since Swamphell is has a 4 string, you should practise 3 and 4. 5 *might* be a bit too much, 6 will be.
Kurupt and I both have the same thoughts about speed/accuracy. Except he's probably more strict, I sometimes just go "ahh bugger it, I can't play it that well at this speed but I'm going to increase anyway". Not good!
I'd say if you started practising sweep motion, you'll have this down by September.

IMO, it's not even that.
I'd personally rate it as extremely subpar. Laiho was just trying WAY too hard to be badass. It has a few good tracks, though.

The metal thing, I wasn't impressed by. I wasn't digging it.
How many years have you played piano for?
12 years. Started when I was 5 and I'm 17 now. The metal thing isn't really a good representation of what we sound like though.

I've been playing piano for around a year I guess. It's so expansive and complex; I love it.

I'm listening to Tokyo Warhearts, it really is incredible.
Alexi's playing is soo clean, he's gotten worse over the years.
I mean he pulls off Silent Night, Bodom Night fukkin' perfectly and it's faster than the original. Every solo is perfect infact.
In love with his tone too.

Well judging by his live playing then yes. Some of the stuff he does now is horrible. His Zakk Wydle improvisation type stuff blows compared to the neo-classical era they were in during Hatebreeder to Follow the Reaper.
I mean Hate Me solo is awesome but he never plays it the same anymore, I noticed he grabs the bar alot and just dives harmonics if he runs out of ideas or messes up.
I would much rather see them in their Tokyo Warhearts days.

I can't say I agree with that at all. He was a little sloppy back then but now he's very clean.

True. AYDY sounded nothing like their early albums, they changed their style a lot, but I prefer their old stuff over their new stuff.

Well after hearing Tokyo Warhearts, I can never think he's got cleaner. Maybe on the albums he is obviously, but live, no way.
BlackFire, he IS an amazing guitarist, I'm not denying that, but his accuracy has decreased.

I see what youre saying. I think the has improved his accuracy slightly from his old stuff, but his old guitar work I think is better than his new work.

If you watch live videos though or the AYDY licks video. Tell me those aren't sloppy.

Pardon?
Bodom had something unique going with the sound they had pioneered up UNTIL AYDY. Then, Alexi's vocal style changed so that he sounds more like a Nu-Metal vocalist; torn between (horrid) singing and screaming. The addicting, neo-classical riffs gave way to lines that have been time and time again by American metal bands. The very fair lyrics became about as corny as DragonForce and Cannibal Corpse.
AYDY reminds me of every other NWOAHM band, with better guitar work and the addition of keyboards. Sorry if you, or anyone else, doesn't agree, but every time I force myself to listen to AYDY, I hear Alexi scream "Look at me, guys! I'm hXc!!!"

I've seen live videos. They aren't sloppy. His playing on the new albums isn't sloppy. His playing on Something Wild and, to a lesser degree, on Hatebreeder, was sloppy.

I'm seriously sick of this input jack. It went out again. I open and of course the wire cut away from it's connection again. I'm thinking since a GOOD soldering job won't work. What will keep it on there and most of all lock that jack in place.
Any ideas.

i agree with you... in europe Cob has a big fanbase and they wanted to have this fanbase in the US too. so this is (imo) the reason why they tried hard to sound like an NWOAHM band :upset:
to the sloppy playing of Alexi: you have to consider than Alexi is sometimes drunk on stage. when i saw them live in vienna his playing was perfect, but after the show they all drunk a lot of wodka!! the next day my guitar-teacher saw them in linz and said that they made a lot of mistakes and played sloppy - after the show alexi asked for excuse.
so maybe alexi was drunk (the day before) and therefore he played sloppy at your show.

None of Cob are drunk on stage. Alexi says he may have one drink before but he's never going to get trashed because then it would make him suck, and obviously he doesn't want that. And neither do we.
