if you discover something that seems like complete unfamiliar territory, i get giddy tbh. Its really the best way to progress. Just take it slow, and stop putting parameters on your practice. You should strive for perfection, not for speed.

I've stopped relying on tabs to learn a song. I find it much more accurate when I sound a song out by ear. Plus, since it's a slow process, by the time you get the whole song figured out you pretty much got it mastered. It could be a little hard for stuff by shredders like Yngwie, but yeah, with everything else, it's better to learn on your own.

Well there's not that much difference in the two, but the second tab is more accurate overall.
For the first main theme, it's the bit that says "alternative fingering" above, that's the 2 bars that are correct, then the open G string bit is all right.
The section after is pretty much perfect.
The first tab has many mistakes and position imperfections.

i think i will take the easier one... in the second one, there are these speed-changes for a very short time; it would be too hard for me... i just want to learn the intro, not the whole song for fun.
there are other songs i want to focus on and who are more important for me.
right now i learn following (parts of) songs:
- Kalmah Swamphell (yeah, still :p )
- Symphony X - Inferno (Unleash the Fire) (intro)
- Towards the Dead End - CoB (sweeping part)
- Sinergy - Passage to the fourth world / the first solo part of Roope
those are the songs i want to focus.
for fun i learn/practise:
Nile - Lashed to the slave stick
Slayer - Raining Blood
Malmsteen - Trilogy

I'm just trying to re-arranged the tab so I can find an easier fingering, the one on the net looks a bit tricky with the pinky barres on the 17th fret etc.
I've got one version that uses a load of position shifts but it's easy for me, I might play it that way.

Hey, I know this is kind of a throwback, but I kind of wanted to get this forum back on track... you know... theories on the songs?
One of my all time favorites is The Patient off of Lateralus. I love the guitar intro and the drums throughout, but I've been thinking a lot about the lyrics:
03 the patient •
A groan of tedium escapes me,
Startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be,
Otherwise I can't go on.
Draining patience, drain vitality.
This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old.
But I'm still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here.
Wait it out,
Gonna wait it out,
Be patient (wait it out).
If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
Gonna wait it out.
If there were no desire to heal
The damaged and broken met along
This tedious path I've chosen here
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may ... (sigh) ... I still may.
Be patient.
I must keep reminding myself of this.
And if there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may.
Gonna wait it out.
I have a theory: This song is about Maynard's mother, who was a cancer patient for 27 years (this might also be the reason for the title "10,000 days (27 years is 9,855 days... almost 10,000.)) ANy thoughts?

Well I don't really think it's to do with style, just common sense really.
Check this:

|---------------------------------------------------
|------------------------------------16-------14--
|-16-13----------16-15-------15---16-15------
|------13------13-------16-13-------------------
|--------14--14------------------------------------
|----------16---------------------------------------
Notes 13,14,15,16 - If you were using 1 finger per fret, it would mean you'd have to barre the 16th fret with your pinky, come down onto your ring and change string and use your middle. I'm saying it's stupidly hard, but it can be made alot easier, in my experience, it's very rare to find anything that requires a 4th finger barre, especially on the higher strings/frets.
|---------------------------------------------------
|------------------------------------16-12---14--
|-16-13----------16-15-------15-------15------
|------13------13-------16-13-------------------
|--------14--14------------------------------------
|----------16---------------------------------------
Changing that one note (16th on G string to 12th on B string) makes that bit easier.
Or you could shift that whole section so the G#min arpeggio is here:
e-7----------------------
b---9------------12-11-
g-----8--------8--------- etc
d-------9----9-----------
a---------11-------------
e-------------------------

repcak, i seriously think you quest for "speed" is hindering your progression. You need to define yourself as a guitarist in other terms
repcak
05-05-2006, 02:45 PM
in what terms do you mean.
i play metal and most metal songs are relative fast ... so without speedprogression i cant play them
Kurrpt
05-05-2006, 02:53 PM
in what terms do you mean.
i play metal and most metal songs are relative fast ... so without speedprogression i cant play them
well, thats true for anyone who plays metal mind you. I just see you, as in my shoes about 4 months ago. You want to play "this" fast, but you can only go "this" fast, and you need to bridge the gap...
The problem is, with the way you are tackling it, and the way i WAS tackling it, you would only make marginal progress every few weeks or so, and it would literally take you years to get to that point
this is based on playing your fastest at a certain BPM for SO many hours, and gradually increasing.
I find it works MUCH better to get rid of you idea of the higher the BPM, the faster you are playing, or will be able to play. In all honesty, you find yourself playing faster when playing slower. Why is this? I'm a firm believer, that in order to play FAST (circa 160 bpm and greater) that it needs to feel "natural"
My way of justifying this is, if you look at ANY guitarist that you or I would consider good, and who can play fast, it looks easy as hell to them, no?
So the real question should be, how do i play fast and comfortable. I'm sure you are not aware, but lets say you were practicing for an inderterminate amount at your TOP speed, you would actually find yourself tensing up, thus limiting your muscles that are involved in the process. The only REAL way to over come this is to play at a speed you feel comfortable with, perfection included.
I found myself making huge leaps in terms of progression when i changed my attitude towards practice. If you saw what i practice daily, you would probably be bored to tears. I will say, that my left hand technique is getting EXACTLY where i wanted it to be, but didnt think it was possible
repcak
05-05-2006, 03:04 PM
hm... that sounds logical what you're saying.... hm... but then, when i play as fast as it feels comfortable, when do i know when i can speed it up? i mean, when i can play swamphell at 60bpm comfortable ... eh no... i don't even play it comfortable when i play it at 40bpm :upset: , when do i know that i can play it faster?
and can you show me the things what you're practising daily, what you think will bore me?

its not so much the type of exercises really. You could get a lot from playing the same exercise every day for two years.
The best thing i could say is to find what is most uncomfortable, like say those double 16th fret pinky rolls from that tab, and just practice the hell out of it.
if you can feel comfortable, lets say at 100 doing a certain exercise, find an exercise that is extremely difficult for you at 100. Instead of just slowing it down then working it under, try to find out WHY its so hard for you, and work on that.

and one more question to this "comfortable" thing... should i practise things with an metronome or should i play it without ?!
Kurrpt
05-05-2006, 03:22 PM
well, i kinda ride the fence on that one. If you think you timing is GOOD, it may not be a benefit. I know when im working of phrasing, i really dont need a metronome.
I would say, take a break from the metronome all together. I think it would definitely help you to be more lax in your practice, which would help releave some tension.

That's some of the best advice I've heard in a while for guitarists.

ok, thank you...
to be serious i don't have problems playing in time with a metronome, but i have problem to adjust it at the speed it feels 100% comfortable. so it will be a good thing to take a time-off from the metronome, for the things i have to practise until i can play it comfortable as you said :thumb:

maybe you should write a book and sell it ?!
honestly, thats what i aim to do someday :D
the problem is, you really need some sort of paper for people to take you seriously. I would want to do a video, explaining common problems, and EXACTLY what needs to be done to overcome them. My problem is, since i started guitar SO late, im constantly trying to play catch up. Catch up to who? No one in particular id say. I have a constant belief that I suck, and i really see no reason to compare myself, or ability, to others. Guitar, for me, is really an internal struggle of where i want to be, where i am now, and figuring out how to bridge that gap.
Most instructional videos ive found, rarely offer any insight on how to do this. If anything, they might provide a few exercises that help you get out of your comfort range, but that really isnt that ground breaking IMO

It's great to be back indeed. My exile has ended. I'll still post mostly on TDMX though.
Bodom Beach Terror is going great. Once I get it done and master it. I'll record.
Don't ask every page, "have you yet" though.

Yeah it was.
Does anyone have a GP4 tab for Universal Mind? One of my fav Petrucci songs.
Actually prolly is my fav.
I doubt I can play the intro, but I could do some of the leads and chord progressions. I'll give it a try.
I was the one who promised a recording of Lashed To The Slave Stick.
Which won't happen. I didn't practice it for like a week and the ability to play the verse went straight to hell. I tried to re-do it but it was going to take a lot of work to re learn it to where I had it at.
In other words. I'm to lazy to re learn that part. :p

i will try to record kalmah - swamphell this weekend, but i can't promise it ... to much to do for university.
but i promised it to record it at least in july (summer); i can't play it as fast as it should be, so if i will record it this weekend it will be maybe about 80bpm, i don't know.

yesterday i tried Cool Edit Pro but i had an old version (1.2) so i deleted it; afterwards i tried CuBase, but this was a fuked up crack version.
Then i tried Logic Audio... this program is only for professionals - too complex :p
now i downloaded audacity and Kristal, and Kristal is fukking awesome ... i love it :D and its freeware :thumb: i can recommend it everyone. i wonder only that it says you need 1GhZ pc, and i have only 900MhZ, but it works ;)

yea man, definitely. The problem is, the files are at home, where i have no internets. My normal modus operendi, was to bring in my iPOD and make tranfers between the two computers. My iPOD since broke, and the iPOD i was borrowing from a friend, he took back.
My little brother is coming to my place today. He has an old RCA mp3 player (20 gig) that i gave him. Ill see if he can let me borrow it, and then ill actually bring my whole archive to work :thumb:
i have one book that i think will be perfect for ya

It's either your tone on your amp, or your imput level is too high. With recording, you don't need to record loud because you can increase it later, check that.

Go straight into the computer.
Guitar - Cable - 1/8 to 1/4 adapter or whatever - Line In plug.

So I tuned my guitar down a whole step yesterday. I got the bridge perfectly level, it plays like a machine. I'm learning the lead intro part to Everytime I Die but he does some whammy bar stuff I haven't figured out yet.

The part from like 6 seconds to 8 seconds in, and the very last note, I don't get how he gets it to come up that high. I don't even think I can go a whole step up without ripping the bridge off.

Hit a harmonic on the 17th frets of the B and G strings while your strings are depressed by the bar, then let it come up and lift a bit when it gets level.
