For bands to be great they have to have both great music and great lyrics, they fall short of the staggering standards some fanboys set for them.
i agree with you 100%.
CoB has only a great music... but thats only 50% of music.
best example: NIN -> music and lyrics 100% :smash:

No. HCDR is far better than AYDY. So you can't put them in the same boat. Granted AYDY isn't at the level of previous work, it's great none the less.
Living Dead Beat, AYDY, In Your Face, Bastards Of Bodom, TL&S and We're Not Gonna Fall are excellent.

once again, after some time: "no, its a bad album... i don't like it"
i haven't listened to it for a long time, and then some weeks ago i started to like it once again. now i don't know what to say about AYDY - on the one hand i know that the guitar work is decent (i only miss good solos), on the other hand the drum annoys me and i don't know what to say about their new style. so i'm inbetween -> excellent/bad - i can't decide

Trivium was horrid. Matt couldn't sing for ****. His "singing" & "screams" were just a utter mess. Matt & Corey both made a lot of mistakes on guitar riffs/solos.
Corey far more than Matt did.
Corey would hit bad notes, try to cover by quickly muting the note or a pinch harmonic.

And yes...Children Of Bodom>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Trivium.

There's this "sweep" thing they do at the beginning of each video they do together, argh it's so back. It's not accurate, it's not clean, they down't even use upstrokes. It's down, down, down, (unevenly) then a quick hammer pull off and repeat. I have the Jn edition of Young Guitar and Matt jsut gets on my nerves on it so much. He hogs the spotlight showing of his (sh!tty) bending and vibrato techniques, when Corey is just sitting there, doing nothing, when his solos are better. But he's really shy judging from that video, Matt's the opposite.

Towards Dead End was pretty impressive. How did you do that nifty whammy bar trick right before the verse?
MRDuCran

Um, I think I hit the open A and D strings, and depressed with the bar, then hit another harmonic, on the 3rd fret G string and pulled the bar up and let go again.

I watched the Nosturi gig today at college.
It's pretty good. It's the first time I've ever seen Alexi's hair wet and **** during a gig, usually it's bone dry and perfectly straight.
The set was pretty much the same as when I saw them so no suprises. I think Alexi's playing was average, some well palyed stuff, some improvised crap.
I'm disappointed they didn't really focus on the keyboard solo on Living Dead Beat, since I transcribed that the other week, I wanted to see him play it.
I asked my friend to learn it today, he said he will but he won't be able to play it full speed.
Watching Alexi play the solo to "Bunch" Me I Bleed, it inspired me to learn it, since I think I'll be able to play it pretty well and it sounds cool, I've always thought that since I first heard it. But I gotta write a 32 bar string quartet (4 instruments) in 2 days so I don't think I should learn it yet.
It's also a shame they didn't show a guitar/key battle thing, I was hoping for that. I think they played one for that gig though. On the US tour they're on now, they're not doing it, which sucks for some people. They won't do it on the Unholy Alliance tour either since their setlist will only be like 30-60 minutes. I'm certainly looking forward to this DVD, I was thinking today after remembering reading on their site that it's their first so there's going to be loads of extras and cool stuff, what if they put subtitles on for the lyrics!!! That would rule, official lyrics straight from Laiho himself. They've asked people to send them videos and rare bootlegs and whatnot so they can stick that on there too, I'm gonna watch this so many times.
OK I'm done, I have no idea why I wrote so much, I have done so recently, who knows.

Oh, well I should mention that my pc isn't great so there's jumps and stuff in there, I think it is TDE actually where's there's that massive £"$*&£$(£"&$* in the middle somewhere, it's because of the low amount of RAM my pc has, it slows down even more when I press record. To be honest, I don't think I hit any wrong note's in that take, except the end bit where it's just the guitar so I cut that bit off and faded it out. :p.

The only thing wrong with with TDE was the 2nd time it played the melody bit in Emin during the verse, I forgot it and improvised a little lick then went back into it, I forgot about that, but it still sounds good imo since it's in the same key and everything. Eh.
I listened to ETID again today, I'm not happy with it, I might take it down. As I wrote on there, I only pracitsed it for the first time that morning so it's not going to be perfect.

I'm not going to bash AYDY because you ruined mine and Charming's Holy Grail remake, but I simply don't like the album. It tries too hard to be badass, and it seems like Children of Bodom didn't so much try something new as forget who they are. I wasn't a massive fan of Hate Crew Deathroll, either.

@Mitch: i recently got i problem, maybe you can help me. first of all i'm burn out on guitar... i don't enjoy it anymore, don't have fun while playing and therefore i haven't really played guitar for more than one week.
The main reason is that i can't hear the same melodies all the time; i sit down and practise my licks for some hours to play it smoother and faster but after some weeks i got sick of the same melodies... its the same with Kalmah's Swamphell. i have to relearn it, cause i made the same mistake all the time, but its so frustrating. i play it at 40bpm and i can't play it for 10x without mistake. at least at the 4th time i made a mistake :upset:
i have this routine i do every time: warm up, play licks, concentrate on technique and finger stretching, learning songs (lick after lick, part after part) - and everything i do is playing slow... increasing speed takes a lot (too much) of time; so therefore i think i'm frustrated, don't enjoy guitar anymore, etc.
can you give me some tips i can do better? how are you practising, playing? do you too have any special routine-practise?

AYDY is Drop D: Down a step - CGCFAD.
This is going from memory, havent actually palyed or listened to CoB in months :p.
you mean, drop C in C standard tuning, do you?

No ?
Drop D = DADGBE
then,
Down a Step = CGCFAD.

Bodom doesn't play in drop D though, they just drop everything a whole step and play in D Standard, then just drop the low string to a C.

I'm not saying they play in Drop D? Learn to read.
They use the tuning 'Drop D: Down a step' which morons call 'Drop C' - CGCFAD.

@Mitch: i recently got i problem, maybe you can help me. first of all i'm burn out on guitar... i don't enjoy it anymore, don't have fun while playing and therefore i haven't really played guitar for more than one week.
The main reason is that i can't hear the same melodies all the time; i sit down and practise my licks for some hours to play it smoother and faster but after some weeks i got sick of the same melodies... its the same with Kalmah's Swamphell. i have to relearn it, cause i made the same mistake all the time, but its so frustrating. i play it at 40bpm and i can't play it for 10x without mistake. at least at the 4th time i made a mistake :upset:
i have this routine i do every time: warm up, play licks, concentrate on technique and finger stretching, learning songs (lick after lick, part after part) - and everything i do is playing slow... increasing speed takes a lot (too much) of time; so therefore i think i'm frustrated, don't enjoy guitar anymore, etc.
can you give me some tips i can do better? how are you practising, playing? do you too have any special routine-practise?You are doing exactly what it takes to be a good guitarist.

what i do is only practising ... and after some time i just can't listen/hear to the same melodies/licks all the time. i play always with a metronome. its frustrating ...
i don't play, i practise and i don't enjoy it anymore... and playing guitar should be, in the first play, be fun

trying doing more diatonic exercises, or bits from different solos you wanna do. Try changing it up more if you find everything becoming STALE

diatonic exercises? what do you mean?
the other thing is... if you want to learn something, you have to start to play it SLOW and increase the speed each time a little bit.... and thats frustrating too! i can play some licks fast, as fast as it should be, but its sloppy... but when i want to play it clean i take my metronome and play this lick 20-30x until i increase the speed... and thats frustrating... cause it takes so long to increase the speed.
everything i play, i play at 50% of the speed it should be :upset:
and tell me, how many time do you practise and how much of the time you play just for fun and do other things (like theory)

I understand where you're coming from, I get sick of playing the same stuff all day everyday too, but it's pretty much the only way to get it at blinding speeds.
For the Swamphell thing, I would say turn the metronome OFF and play it as slow as you can without messing up. Even if you have the metronome at 40bpm, you're still being pressured to keep in time and be constantly playing, if you haven't mastered it in terms of what frets to play, then you should not be practising with a metronome, just play each note one by one really slow without an amp or clean and make sure you have it down perfectly, then put the metronome on at 40.
I get discouraged from playing all the time, after an hour I'm bored of the licks, the guitar, myself, life, but you just got to stick at it, take a break, have a drink etc and maybe listen to a really good song, when I do that, I think "woh, I wanna be able to do that" then it motivates me to play again, and since I've been playing already that day, I'm kinda warmed up so I can jump right in. Also, watching live videos and instructional stuff also gets me in the guitar playing mood, give that a shot.

Playing in key basically. When something is said to be Diatonic the meant it is in whatever key. An example would be saying that B is diatoninc in Cmaj.

thank you Mitch; good to know that i'm not the only one, who is getting sick of licks, when playing them all the time.
to the swamphell song: the funny thing is, that when i play it with the wrong technique but fast i can play it without mistake... but when i try to play it with the right technique i can't ... if fast or slow, i make the same mistake.
to motivate yourself with guitar-videos: its the same i do too! take a break and then listen to a good song or video and then practise again ... 100% motivated. the strange thing is, that this didn't helped me the last week. i got sick of guitar in general... i even tried not to listen to metal  i think the best thing is to make a break... don't touch the guitar for a week... yesterday i played a little bit and today i enjoyed playing guitar (a little bit).

I think everyone must get sick of playing at some point in their musical lives, especially if it's like us, trying to get to a stupidly high level of playing but practising everything soo slow, it can get depressing.
The to Swaphell thing, it's probably because you don't know it well enough yet, as I said. It's weird how it works but you can play some things faster than you can slow. You'll have more accuracy but less consistency so getting it perfect slowly is essential.
I've been taking a break, not because I'm bored of guitar, just because I'm a lazy bastard during holidays.

i once again analysed my fingermoves and i think one of the problems, why i make this mistake is that my pinky and ringfinger (4 and 3) are too weak, though they shouldnt, cause i use them often - but in this fingerpattern the moves seem to be a little uncontrolled and weak.
so i think i have to strength them through some pinky and ringfinger exercises :D
thanks
Kurrpt

thats the common misconception repcak...
people believe their ring and pinky are "weak", so they do finger trills over and over on those two fingers. The problem is, they are compensating for coordination problems by repeating a task a million times. It really instill bad technique.
The thing to do is try to be mindful of those two digits at all times (focus). It sounds easy, or over simplified, but its really the truth. If you havent already figured out, fretting a note takes VERY little energy, therefore its practically negligable that you have a LOT of muscle in your fingers. The trick is to repeat the task over and over, and train your muscle memory to be perfect, while maintaining that level of precision.

hm... i won't make thrills. hm... the problem i have is maybe not the strength (sorry that i expressed myself wrong) but its the coordination between my ringfinger and pinky, when i have to use them one after another
i would do those exercises i think:
-----------------
---------------
---------------
-----------3-4
------3-4-----
-3-4----------etc.
or/and
---------3-5
-----3-5----
-3-5--------etc.
the swamphell song is:
----------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------16--------14
-16-13----------------16-15--------15---16-15-----
--------13----------13--------16-13------------------
-----------14---14------------------------------------
--------------16---------------------------------------
the marked notes are the notes i always make a mistake....the end of the sweeping
----16
15---
is the main problem... and you use the ringfinger and pinky.

you definitely have the right idea...
what REALLY helps me, is to sit down, close my eyes, and concentrate my hardest on those 2 fingers. Ill actually be able to feel the wood/fret wire under those 2 fingers and maintain a VERY small heighth above the fretboard.
You also need to learn the relationships with your other fingers. Something like
43424142 works pretty nice, but you dont wanna get into a habbit of doing the same lick over and over. Mixing it up definitely goes a long way

thats really the distinction ive tried to make. I realized some time ago that in order to play in a live situation and do it with any kind of professionalism, that a level of proficiency and accuracy would have to be attained. You could argue that i spend too much time on this endeavor, but its really helping me to get a handle on guitar overall

THe progress is gradual, but its noticeable. When I started classical guitar I didn't it was helping that much, but I jammed out with a friend who I hadn't seen in awhile and he commented on how much I had improved on guitar.
