I'd say I'm a shredder. Anyone who wants to hear me just IM me on AIM. I have yahoo but I never go on unless someone wants to do a jam.

Leah do you just practice without distortion? I suggest you buy a cheap practice amp with a nice metal tone. I own a Roland Cube Micro for practice and portability, it is great. It is 3 watts, overpowers a drumset by way more than you'd imagine, and has a few amp models, including a very nice dual rect.

You should upload some of your stuff on this thread if you can play any Bodom.

Depends what I practice. If I'm practicing songs which use distortion, I'll use it. If I'm just practicing with my notes and stuff my teacher gives me, then no.

Still at everything done but the solo. I'll be working on it a bit tonight, and lots tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get it to Ollie by Monday or Tuesday. Man, Subway is so damn good.

Awesome. (You're right about the Subway. I had some last week. Good stuff.)

Same here. I NEVER practice scales so im suprised how i can play the things i do let alone my impove stuff. Once you learn some scales and a buttload of chords in all positions then you'll play the best stuff you'll ever play

I jsut assumed your amp didn't have distortion, or it had terrible distortion for metal.

I'll record some stuff sometime when I'm sitting around, but I take a long time to record things cuase I always have to get it perfect. If anyone wants to hear an ok Silent Night, Bodom Night solo with a midi backing track within the next few days tho I'll start recording that.

I used to only post in the guitar forum, now I only post here. It helped me learn a lot of stuff and get really motivated, but I think my time there is done and I've learned all I have to learn from there. I remember though, it was like a warzone in there. Either you had to shape up and be a prodigy or you basically got flamed. I was metaphorically whipped into shape. I love the atmosphere on this forum a lot more. Most of us here play guitar, but everyone is so easy going.
I know exaclt ywhat you mean. It's almost is though you're only welcome if you're some sort of naturally gifted individual. The threads around here are much better. You can just sit around and talk about metal and no one really cares how good you are.

I actually started practicing more out of spite. :) Not the best motive, but it worked. And - tell me if I'm prying too much here - do you study theory?

I think that I'm going to record myself playing some Children of Bodom random riffs or something sometime. I have some friends that I said I would send some samples to. Maybe I'll post them on the Hate Crew thread or on Josh's board or something.

I'm off. Ciao, dudes.

That would be me. You're right in that I'm blowing through things, but mainly I'm blowing through all the wrong things. I focus on the simple theory-based things and rush through scales and arpeggios - the things that boost speed.

Thanks for all your help guys. You've really gotten me motivated. :thumb:
So much so that I'm going to go practice now. Later people.

Yeah I know loads of theory, and I write a lot of songs, it could not be handier. Without that I'd know nothing. I also have a really good ear I'd say, I train it a little bit. If you play me a note on the piano I can tell you what it is in relation to C, so for example if I play an F with my eyes closed I can go downwards and tell you when I get to C, and then count up to find if its F. I'm slowly starting to do it without counting, and when I can do that, that means I can tab whole songs by ear and it'll be awesome.

I really need to start learning my theory. It would help me out immensely. I'm getting decent though. I knocked out that Taste Of My Scythe stuff (all but the solo, of course) pretty quick. I'm best at the rhythem stuff, but I've really been putting the hammer down on getting better at lead.

I was just at camp for three weeks and hung out with a guy who loved Children of Bodom. I'd never heard them before, and they sounded awesome. IDK what album it was, I just remember one of the songs on it was Midnight in Bodom or something like that. I honestly know almost nothing about them, but they sounded awesome. This is coming form someone who doesn't even listen to much heavy metal. He was telling me how their bassist plays an 8-string and almost makes you dizzy when you watch him, and I remember in one of their songs the keyboardist, guitarist, and bassist were all playing really ****ing fast all together at the same speed. They sounded crazy. Sorry if I sound like a noob, when I saw this thread I just thought of that...

This is just something that's been weighing on my mind lately...

Does anyone else think Alexi's ESPs suck? His old Jacksons were were very nice with gold-plated hardware and other wonderful features. His new guitars I think look...not so good. They also only have a single passive EMG in the bridge position (God forbid he should play clean once in a while). His ESP signature series, as much as I'd hate to admit it, looks like a total ripoff. $3,000-4000? What the hell? By looking at the specs I can tell that my Jackson DKMG is as good if not better than the axe he plays now. Anyone else feel this way?

people blow so much $$ on signature axes by their favourite players. All you need is the right humbuckers and put them into any decent guitar body and you have their sound. pretty sloppy stuff with no drums. the rythem guitar is pretty ****y quality and the solo's arnt bad but need better timming with witht he rythem

-needs better timing
-sounds fuzzy, suggest finding a better recording program
-needs drums

other than that the guitar work really istn that bad, actually pretty good just not the best puting it together, spend some more time in recording and getting the timing down, listen to the song in the back round is what i do for timing. or just listen to song in backround for the rythem and do the lead listening to the rythem.

id recomend adobe audition to record, ull have to dl that with bit torrents though. unless you wanna pay $400 dolla

listen to our bodom covers- there new.

Not bad, but I agree with flames. Also, it seems like the timing is off just a tad between the lead guitar and rhythm. Don't focus so much on going fast, but on staying together with the other guitar. :thumb: Very noticeable on Kissing the Shadows.

On Bed of Razors, you've got part of the main riff wrong. Was it intentional? If not:
After you play the first part of it, it's supposed to change slightly to a different note instead of the one you were playing before; you kept it the same. :)

Hello everyone. Favorite Bodom video and why?

I have no clue about that. I didn't even hear about the competition until not that long ago. I don't know, is anyone doing anything?

I'm confused about what I want to sound like really. I think I want to sound more like a Maiden band, but with more melodic influences and a bit of thrash and powermetal influence. You can kind of see in the songs that they switch moods a bit. I think Potential is a good example of Maiden with more melody because of the leads, but I really don't know if I want to be a lot more melodic and do something like Bodom or Wintersun.

Well i guess you could just fuse the two genres. Like stick with the cool lead stuff over everything, but add in some heavy, melodic ****. Also, in the verses or chorus or something create some kind of hamonization fills here and there, like In Flames does. You're doing good though.

EDIT: Also listen to his DONT HOLD BACK thing. Thats important :thumb:

Power thrash with maiden = Iced Earth

Just write songs how they need to sound, dont restrict yourself to trying to write within certain limits.

Itll just make your music repetetive, monotonous and rigid.

Yeah it does sound like the formula for Iced Earth, but we have less thrash and more power and maiden in us I'd say. Iced Earth is not known for their leads, while my music focuses much more on lead than rythym.

alexi laiho taps away as fast as he can and everyone is impressed.

it's the age old melody vs technicality thing.

and melody wins IMO

EDIT: you're an idiot

Johnny Cash doesn't write ****, as he is dead.

Anyway.

I like COB, Norther and Kalmah, though I personally like COB the best. Norther just sounds like a less catchy COB ripoff.

No, sorry. I will try to do it now.

EDIT: Mike - I'm sorry! That sucks, I was looking forward to hearing a Nemo cover. :upset:

EDIT2: Ultima feedback:

66 - Pretty good. I like the somewhat....I don't know....dark feel about it. Especially the opening riff. Again, I think I would be able to give you better feedback if I actually heard the song; not just a midi. I'm liking the solo very much; pretty rad. I also noticed that you had three guitars on this song? Nice touch.

Potential - Good intro, but I have some advice. The part where the rhythm guitar starts playing the 0-2-2-1-1 and then there is the rest, and 3-1-0-0, it would sound even cooler if you had the guitar play the first three notes (referring to 0-2-2) and do a barbend or harmonic or something. Some kind of squeal, to make it sound more interesting during the intro. Personally, things like what I'm suggesting (IMO) make the listener really think "wow, that sounds so cool!" Get my drift? It would make it sound more interesting. I like what the lead is playing on the verse; catchy. LOVE the prechorus with the harmonized guitars. :thumb: Good job on that. Solo. Good lead stuff. BUT. In my opinion, you should have something stronger going on with either the drums or the rhythm guitar to back that up. What you have going on now doesn't give the solo justice. Love the bass stuff afterwards; not too many bands show off what their bass player can do. It's unique; stick with it.

Riff 2 - The opening is good. The thing that made me interested in the song was the prechorus. Good drum work there. Props for that one. The only thing I would suggest about the prechorus would be the lead guitar; could use some difference in the riff. Just the 14-16-17-19 thing gets a little repetetive; again, try some bends or harmonics on that part. Either that or just change it up a little. The Bridge is good. The beginning of Interlude B: :thumb: . Solo is awesome. Now, the part between the first part of the lead guitar's solo and the second part, where the rhythm is playing those four (I think) bars. On the last bar, I would put something a little different for the rhythm, something to really add to the solo. Some downward runs or something. The re-intro was a good idea, really nice. During the re though, I would add some really cool either bass riffs or some double bass drum stuff. Something to go on in the background which would really enhance it.

Overall, good work.

Hows that for a review? :p

The riffs, keyboards, solos, melodies, they were all amazing. Something Wild on the other hand, pissed me off. It was their debut, and they got much better, so it's cool though.

I'm not a huge CoB fan, but I'd have to say that Something Wild is probably the best they've ever done/ will ever do.

It's short, so it doesn't get boring, which can easily occur with all the Power Metal melody and it's still raw with cool drumming.

The start of Red Light In My Eyes II is a Mozart lick.

Anyway, to the topic of bands, I'm a one person band. Pretty unique stuff. Instruments I have on my tracks are usually quite a high number. Strings, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Symphony Percussion, Harps, Piano, and much more.

Even with the big solo at the end, and the numerous leads scattered throughout the song? I think that's what made the song so great...there are a lot of lead parts, even though some are merely atmospherical instead of a solo that you would focus on...

It is very good. The style is very fast, aggressive power metal with high shrieked vocals and melodic, technical guitar playing.

Hatebreeder...I think it is like a watered down Follow The Reaper. It has all the elements of it, just not as high craftmanship as that album. It's better than Something Wild or Hatecrew Deathroll, just not as good as Follow The Reaper.

Damn straight. That's what really makes Bodom different is how the guitar interplays with the keyboards. Follow the Reaper especially.

Does anyone here like Norther? Very similar to Bodom, almost ripoff close, but they have a darker, more gothic type sound and use even more keyboards.

I'm a huge Norther fan. I have all 3 albums. I love Mirror of Madness most by far. The atmospheric use of the keyboards is great, and the guitar solos really have a defined sound. Plus, piano in every song just works out beautifully. The way they use the keyboard is very magestic, especially with the piano in songs like Blackhearted or Of Darkness and Light. Also, Frozen Sky is just plain a work of art.

Let me find it.

EDIT: Here ya go.

No, sorry. I will try to do it now.

EDIT: Mike - I'm sorry! That sucks, I was looking forward to hearing a Nemo cover.

Good job on that.

The beginning of Interlude B: .

Wow that was an excellent review. I am working a lot more on my gp drum skills, it's so choppy cause I don't always know how to make a beat that fits. I will keep all that in mind when I go back later to revise the songs. I will defintaely save that review.

If you are interested in the song I am writing now, I'm about 120 bars in, I'd be glad to show it to you. It's much more singing oriented and has a nice Maiden touch to it. I don't have so many leads so singing can go in, and almost all of it has drumming.

Thanks a lot!

It's not a cover, it's actually Cryhavoc, it was a split album between Bodom, Cryhavoc, and Wizzard.

Also, Bodom's singing is not a death growl it's just harsh vocals. Alexi does clean vocals on his cover of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell, and also on the chorus of Sixpounder.
